A matchup between two of the top dogs in the Mountain West sets up a potential game of the year for the conference. The undefeated No. 24 Fresno State Bulldogs come to Laramie for only their seventh time to face the one-loss Cowboys. In the last four meetings, the Bulldogs have outscored the Pokes 87-10, with the games in 2022 and 2021 being shutouts.

As the Bulldogs have had the number of the Cowboys, Wyoming’s season has been a surprise for many thus far. A team picked to finish sixth in the conference, now is 4-1 with their only loss coming at the nationally respected Texas Longhorns.

To open conference play last week, Wyoming’s offense looked improved. Quarterback Andrew Peasley appeared to be even healthier, with 194 yards through the air, an added 34 on the ground and two total touchdowns. Running back Harrison Waylee made his weekly appearance in the endzone again and 191 yards. He also added another breakaway touchdown, scoring from 46 yards out and adding a 66-yard rush.

Wide receiver Ayir Asante also sparked on offense with a flat route and some magic after the catch for a 66-yard touchdown.

The defense has room for improvement, especially in the first drive and the fourth quarter. However, nickelback Wrook Brown snatched an interception for the third time this season.

The Cowboys special teams showed up as well, now tied for second in the country with three blocked kicks, including the blocked field goal against Appalachian State and a blocked point after attempt, by Devonne Harris, both returned to the endzone by Jakorey Hawkins. Additionally, John Hoyland kicked four field goals and is still perfect on the season with eight.

It will be a good and close ball game. How can Wyoming pull out a victory? What do the Cowboys need to do to knock off the undefeated Bulldogs?

A Wyoming victory comes from…

Do not give the ball to the Bulldogs. It is much easier said than done, but Fresno State is tied for third in the country in the turnover margin at eight. This includes eight interceptions by the defense. However, even last week for Fresno, turnovers proved to be at least somewhat of a kryptonite for the Bulldogs.

After two interceptions thrown by quarterback Mikey Keene, Nevada, a 0-5 team, only trailed by 14 in the middle of the third quarter. Wyoming has increased its forced turnover rate with a fumble and interception in each of the last two games. Intercepting those passes was Brown, one sealing the victory against Appalachian State.

Head coach Craig Bohl said in his weekly media press conference that the defense needs to get off the field quicker than the New Mexico game. Forcing turnovers themselves is a great way to be positive in the margin and keep their offense off the field.

When getting interceptions and fumbles, forcing the turnovers allows the offense to be set up, typically, in good field position. In any capacity of the offense, something must keep moving the chains. This doesn’t require all aspects of the offense to be in its groove, but they must be adequate.

Against New Mexico, Peasley seemed to have his juice back behind his throws and appeared healthier. Even better, the receivers appeared to be finding the open space with Peasley finding nine different receivers during the game. With even more time to nurse his shoulder, the quarterback demonstrated play that Wyoming fans have become accustomed to.

However, the Bulldog defense has only allowed an average of 188 passing yards by their opponents. If through the air isn’t working, then the Cowboys must rely on the explosive back, Waylee. After missing the first two games, the Northern Illinois transfer is averaging the most rushing yards per game, at 152 yards, in the country; however, he isn’t eligible for the statistic. His yardage this season, in two fewer games than the team, makes up just over 50% of the Cowboys’ total rushing yards on the season. The next closest player is Peasley, who only makes up 14.25%.

In any capacity that Wyoming can manage, the offense must move down the field. If any of the past games are an indication, expect Waylee and the rushing attack to be on point as usual. No game this season thus far has seen the Cowboys rush for less than 150 yards.

For the Pokes to upset Fresno State, the offense will have to put on a show. A safe number to say that Wyoming will have to put on the scoreboard for the victory is around 35 points. Managing a season-high in points against a team only allowing 17 per game would help end Saturday night in Laramie with happy Wyomingites.

However, it’s not all about the statistics and yards for this game. It’s about getting the nasty taste out of the players’ mouths. Having two straight losses against the Bulldogs in which the Cowboys haven’t scored usually doesn’t sit well with players. The last victory for Wyoming against Fresno State came in the 2014 season, Bohl’s first season in Laramie.

Players like Frank Crum and Peasley, sixth-year players who have only played in the MW, have never come out victorious over the Bulldogs. Don’t be surprised to see Wyoming playing like it’s a rivalry game. For the Cowboys, this could be viewed as a grudge match.

As one last motivator for the Pokes, Bohl and Wyoming have been critiqued for it being his 10th season and never eclipsing a .500 record. That can change Saturday night. Bohl is 56-57 at Wyoming with the potential to have an even record after his 6-18 start as a FBS head coach.

The game will be one to keep an eye on, with some branding it as one of the most important Group of Five games this season. Kickoff is scheduled for just after 6 p.m. MST at War Memorial Stadium in Laramie. The temperature should be around 60 degrees at kickoff but will be close to the mid-40s by the fourth quarter.

SP+ PROJECTION: Boise State by 11.2

FEI PROJECTION: Boise State by 14.0

PARKER FLEMING PROJECTION: Boise State 73.87% win probability (33.48-23.89)

The Boise State Broncos head into a critical Week 6 matchup with the San Jose State Spartans looking to right more than one recent wrong.

Not only do the Broncos hope to put their disappointing performance in non-conference play behind them, they can keep pace with Mountain West-leading Air Force and improve to 2-0 in conference play with a win over SJSU. Owing to quirks in the schedule over the past few seasons, this is also the first time Boise State has clashed with the Spartans since the Mountain West championship game three years ago, so a measure of revenge is almost certainly on their minds, as well.

Here’s what Boise State can do to secure a win over the Spartans.

Three Keys to a Boise State Victory

1. Who’s Brett Rypien and who’s Montell Cozart?

One of the biggest nuggets to come out of Andy Avalos’s weekly press conference was the revelation that Taylen Green and Maddux Madsen will split time at quarterback against the Spartans. While he was correct that this is something the Broncos have done before, the circumstances in which they’ve utilized a pair of QBs with complementary skill sets have varied over the years: Montell Cozart was used situationally, but you can’t really pigeon-hole his usage; Jaylen Henderson took over down the stretch in 2019 for an injured Hank Bachmeier; and Green himself came on in relief of Bachmeier at times last year before Madsen began to do the same this fall.

A 50-50 split doesn’t seem likely, so who will be responsible for what? Green has struggled badly as a third-down passer, for instance, but he’s also run for six first downs in nine third-down rushing attempts. Madsen has the higher overall completion rate and yards per attempt, but Pro Football Focus notes that his big-time throw rate is nearly half of Green’s (2.9% to 4.9%) and his pressure-to-sack ratio is considerably higher (8.3% to 28.6%). Putting one or the other, let alone both, in a position to succeed will be a difficult problem for offensive coordinator Bush Hamdan to solve.

2. Get the ball to Eric McAlister.

Outside of Jeanty, no one else on the Broncos offense has proven to be as reliable as their six-foot-four sophomore pass catcher. He’s already seen 47 targets, fifth-most in the Mountain West, and dropped just one pass while leading the team with 25 catches and 436 receiving yards. More importantly, though, his nine receptions of 20-plus yards not only lead the conference but are as many as San Jose State’s top three receivers (Dominick Mazotti, Nick Nash, Charles Ross) combined.

That could be important because SJSU’s pass defense has often been gashed by the stronger offenses they have faced in 2023: USC and Oregon State each averaged nearly ten yards per attempt and Air Force was 2-for-2 on its rare attempts against the Spartans two weeks ago. It’s a dimension of the game that could get glossed over with the ongoing quarterback controversy, but McAlister’s ability to flip field position by himself could come in handy.

3. Don’t be shy about leaning on Ashton Jeanty and the rest of the ground game.

Everyone knows what Jeanty can accomplish at this point, but it wouldn’t be surprising if others like Jambres Dubar also had a field day against this Spartans defense. That’s because just about every metric, traditional or advanced, projects a potentially huge advantage for Boise State’s running backs and San Jose State’s front seven, which has seen its stuff rate drop from 20% in 2022 to 15% this fall and allowed 5.54 yards per carry against FBS competition this year, an average that ranks 125th in the country.

Prediction

The Broncos aren’t in an ideal spot, but they’re catching the Spartans at an ideal time to get right. It is likely to come down to whichever defense can make more stops, but it helps that Boise State has the best player on the field so, no matter the other ongoing concerns, that should be enough to get them to 2-0 in Mountain West play.

What’s old is new on the blue.

Things haven’t gone according to plan for the Boise State Broncos in 2023, so head coach Andy Avalos announced during his weekly press conference on Monday that quarterbacks Maddux Madsen and Taylen Green will both see the field during the Broncos’ clash against San Jose State on Saturday.

This isn’t the first time that Boise State has dipped into this particular well, as Avalos himself noted, since both Brett Rypien and Montell Cozart saw time under center for the Broncos during their 2017 Mountain West championship run. The gambit does take place under much different circumstances this time, however, as Green has started every game thus far but struggled with consistency, completing only 52.6% of his throws for 938 yards, four touchdowns, and four interceptions.

Madsen, meanwhile, has been relatively effective in relief so far, completing 22-of-32 attempts for 319 yards and four touchdowns. However, according to Pro Football Focus, the disparity in performance may be less clear-cut: Green, of course, adds a dimension to the offense with his legs, with 203 sack-adjusted rushing yards to date, but his big-time throw percentage is up from 2022, as well, and currently outpaces Madsen’s own (4.9% to 2.9%). PFF also notes that Green’s receivers have already dropped as many passes, eight, as they had in his whole redshirt freshman year last fall.

Whoever ends up seeing the lion’s share of the workload will be under pressure to perform against a Spartans secondary that was overrun by the likes of USC and Oregon but held their own against Cal Poly and Toledo in non-conference action. We’ll see with which cohort the Broncos are more closely aligned when the game kicks off at 6:00 PM Mountain/5:00 PM Pacific on CBS Sports Network this Saturday.

Denver vs Los Angeles Chargers Game Preview

Why Denver Will Win

Is this when the offense finally perks up?

After the brutal 12-9 loss to the Colts when the offense struggled and the passing game didn’t click in the red zone, now the Broncos get a Charger defense that’s just okay at holding up inside the 20 and gives up the second-most points in the NFL.

It starts with the ground game. Take the pressure off Russell Wilson to connect with a receiving corps that isn’t on the same page as the quarterback and just start running and keep going. The Chargers allow an NFL-most 5.8 yards per carry, are coming off a hammering by the Browns, and …

Why Los Angeles Chargers Will Win

Yeah, the Broncos just don’t score.

They passing game isn’t consistent, the ground game hasn’t done enough with its opportunities, and the O is the worst in the NFL in the red zone. There isn’t the power to run it in, and again, the passing attack isn’t sharp.

The Chargers have to be patient. The Denver O might not be good, but the defense is tremendous at keeping teams from winging it around. As long as there’s a balance like there was last week against the Browns, and the attack takes advantage of every scoring opportunity, all will be fine.

Get to 17 points and take your chances. But ..

What’s Going To Happen

The Charger defense is way too leaky.

Denver’s offense will get a touchdown on a first quarter drive, Wilson will be good, and then it’ll all stop. The early scoring won’t translate into the second half when Justin Herbert comes up with two touchdown passes set up by another good day from the ground game.

Dallas vs Philadelphia Game Preview

Why Dallas Will Win

With all of the attention paid to how well the Cowboys are doing with Cooper Rush at quarterback, there’s a bigger thing happening with them.

The defense has been outstanding.

Rush and the running game have been able to keep the season afloat before Dak Prescott returns, but it’s the defense that’s taking over with plenty of takeaways and big plays

The secondary has come up with a few great performances against Hall of Fame-caliber passers – and Carson Wentz – and it starts with enough of a pass rush to bother Jalen Hurts.

The running game is effective enough, Rush will hit third down throws, and …

Why Philadelphia Will Win

The Eagle defensive line is getting better and better.

How the rest of the NFL didn’t pick up that Jordan Davis was going to be an anchor out of central casting – and worthy of top five overall pick – will look worse and worse over time.

There have been lulls, but the secondary has her to allow 250 yards through the air, the run defense has been a rock – even if Kyler Murray was flying around last week – and that other side is playing well, too.

Helped by Hurts taking off – along with a huge rotation of serviceable backs – the Eagles lead the NFL in rushing touchdowns as they set the tempo in games by getting everything going on the ground.

This week, though …

Week 6 NFL Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Here comes the passing attack.

For all the big things the Dallas secondary does, it still gets beaten a bit too often. It doesn’t give up a ton of big plays, but it can be moved on.

DeVonta Smith and AJ Brown will alternate drive cranking catches, the backs will be involved, and this will be where the O throws a curveball into the mix.

Hurts is the marquee star in this – and rightly so – but it’ll be the defense that generates the buzz everyone will be talking about on Monday.
