College Football Week 5 Picks: 10 Best Games For A Parlay

If we put together a 10-team parlay for Week 5 of the college football season, what should we do? Here are our 10 best parlay picks.

If we wanted to put together a 10-team parlay for Week 5 of the college football season, what should we do? Here are our ten best parlay picks.

Close doesn’t count in parlays.

For example, last week in my Sure Thing 10-Team Parlay – which would’ve only won you $26 on a $100 investment – I got nine out of the ten right, but Auburn, Wyoming, and Fresno State were too close, and it didn’t matter thanks to an epic gack by Minnesota against Bowling Green.

When it really going, getting seven out of the first eight games right – really, North Carolina against Georgia Tech? – wasn’t good enough. We need ten, and I failed.

But I’m determined to get this right before the year is up.

Like last week, here are the rules.

1. We do NOT take underdogs. Ever.

2. This is for fun – assume you’re going to lose your money, because everyone loses at big parlays.

3. WE DO NOT TAKE UNDERDOGS. I know its tempting, and I know that’s where the big coin is, but unless you’re going for something on a 3-team parlay, don’t.

The ten best college football games for a parlay in Week 5 are …

1. Toledo -3500 vs UMass

It’s a big number to start, and it won’t get you anything, but we’re building. The whole idea is to get to ten. If we can’t get this right, there’s no reason to press on.

2. South Carolina -260 vs Troy

Big number with Toledo, so following it up with a reasonable call on an SEC team with the second pick.

2-team parlay payout on $100: $42.42

3. North Carolina -1100 vs Duke

Spite. Pure spite. North Carolina owes us for picking it here last week against Georgia Tech.

3-team parlay payout on $100: $55.36

4. Ohio State -650 vs Rutgers

Rutgers is just plucky enough to pull this off if Ohio State isn’t sharp, but … nah. Ohio State might make you sweat, but it’s not awful here at -650.

4-team parlay payout on $100: $79.27

Week 4 NFL Expert Picks

5. Alabama -600 vs Ole Miss

There still aren’t any big chances being taken, but taking South Carolina keeps the possible payout high with less risky mid-picks.

5-team parlay payout on $100: $109.14

6. Penn State -525 vs Indiana

I actually don’t love this pick – Indiana could absolutely pull this off – and -525 doesn’t have much value, but it’s still a reasonable call.

6-team parlay payout on $100: $148.98

7. Marshall -380 vs Middle Tennessee

As long as the Herd don’t turn it over, this isn’t where you’re going to lose it – if we’re still alive this far in.

7-team parlay payout on $100: $214.50

Week 5 College Football Expert Picks

8. Army -350 vs Ball State

Army worked in this spot last week, and there’s no reason to change it up now. There’s a chance Ball State rises up at home, but Army is playing too well.

8-team parlay payout on $100: $304.36

9. Memphis -420 vs Temple

Temple is way overdue to come up with a big performance out of nowhere, but as long as form holds, Memphis should help bring this home.

9-team parlay payout on $100: $400.64

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

10. Vanderbilt -650 vs. UConn

Okay, okay, we didn’t go too crazy on any of these, and the overall payout isn’t anything special for a 10-team parlay, but if we get this right …

10-team parlay payout on $100: $477.66

I’ll try again next week. We’ll get one of these things right before the season is over.

Marshall vs Middle Tennessee Game Preview

Why Marshall Will Win

The Thundering Herd are just this close to being 4-0.

They lost the last two games, but the close calls against East Carolina and Appalachian State could’ve gone either way – the passing game was great against the Pirates and pushed the Mountaineers.

Middle Tennessee isn’t doing enough on third downs to keep the Marshall offense offense its game. The O line is giving up too many plays behind the line, and the lack of third down conversions and stops is crushing in the time of possession battle.

Marshall has no problem moving the ball, and the pass rush is among the nation’s best.

Week 5 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Middle Tennessee Will Win

The Blue Raiders can’t run the ball, but the passing attack is moving just fine no matter who’s under center.

Bailey Hockman was just fine, but he decided he was done with football. Chase Cunningham is a veteran who can push the ball down the field a bit and should be able to press the Herd secondary enough to be a problem.

The offense might not be consistent enough, but there aren’t a slew of turnovers, the passing attack is efficient, and the defense should come up with a few big plays against a mistake-prone Herd offense that gave the ball away three times in each of the first three games.

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

It’s all about not screwing up for Marshall.

The offensive line isn’t going to have a problem against the Blue Raider defensive front, the offense will move the ball just fine, and there’s a chance this gets put away almost immediately.

The Blue Raiders can make up for problems with enough big plays to keep this interesting, but Marshall will keep this simple.

The Herd will move the sticks, and Middle Tennessee won’t.

Liberty vs UAB Game Preview

Why Liberty Will Win

This is still a dangerous team with a whole lot of weapons – it’s better than it showed in the loss to Syracuse.

The defense might have been run over, but it remains great on third downs and it’s among the most effective in the country overall. Yeah, the Flames struggled up front in the Carrier Dome, but they allowed just 77 yards.

UAB doesn’t have the pass rush to bother Malik Willis, it’s not going to contain him when he’s on the move, and overall it’s making way, way too many mistakes – there are too many penalties.

Week 5 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why UAB Will Win

Campbell, Troy, and Old Dominion. Liberty might have pushed Syracuse in a 24-21 road loss, but it’s not like it faced a slew of killers over the first three weeks.

So yes, the overall defensive stats might be strong, but they’re misleading. The Flames aren’t forcing takeaways, and the way Orange RB Sean Tucker rumbled at will rumbled on them is a problem.

UAB’s rushing offense has been more than fine with DeWayne McBride and Jermaine Brown getting the job done to let one of the nation’s most efficient passing games do the rest. And …

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

UAB is for real.

It got hammered by Georgia, but it managed to beat North Texas, Tulane, and Jacksonville State all away from home. Now it gets to enjoy its new digs as Protective Stadium opens its doors for the first time.

Willis will have his moments, but the UAB lines will hold up as the game goes on. The balanced attack will be enough to control the clock and the game throughout.

Louisiana vs South Alabama Game Preview

Why Louisiana Will Win

Nothing has actually changed.

Seriously, Louisiana wasn’t supposed to win at Texas to start the season, and being 3-1 is right.

No, the running game hasn’t been the same devastating force of the last several seasons, but Levi Lewis and the passing attack have been good enough to pick up the slack.

On the other side, the South Alabama offensive line isn’t doing much for the running game, and it has problems keeping teams out of the backfield, but …

Week 5 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why South Alabama Will Win

The Jaguar defense gets off the field in a hurry.

The pass rush has been outstanding, but it’s the ability on third downs that’s making all of the difference. No. 1 in the nation in third down D, USA is allowing teams to convert just 19% of their chances.

No one’s running on this D, with Bowling Green gaining nine yards and Alcorn State coming up with just 32. However …

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Louisiana’s running game isn’t like anything South Alabama has dealt with.

The Jaguars have the defensive front to keep the struggling Ragin’ Cajun ground game in check, but their offensive side won’t do enough to take advantage of the opportunities the D will create to keep this interesting.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Old Dominion vs UTEP Game Preview

Why Old Dominion Will Win

The Monarchs aren’t bad.

They might be 1-3, but there’s no shame in losing to Wake Forest or Liberty for a program that’s just getting up and going again, but pushing Buffalo in a 35-34 loss is a nice step.

The ODU running game has been great – the young combination of Elijah Davis and Jon-Luke Peaker are averaging over six yards per carry – and the offense is showing the potential to be dangerous with more time logged in.

UTEP isn’t going crank up the O and put this away easily. It’s bad on third downs and turned it over ten times in just four games.

Week 5 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why UTEP Will Win

So what are the Miners doing to get to 3-1? The running game was great in the first two games, the passing attack was solid over the last two, and there’s real, live offensive production – that’s not a given for the program over the years.

It’s the other side that’s leading the way to wins.

The Miners are hardly a brick wall, but they’re holding up reasonably well – allowing under 350 yards in three of the four games, all the wins – and they’re dominating on third downs. Teams are only converting 19% of their third down chances.

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Can Old Dominion QB DJ Mack do enough with the passing game if UTEP continues to bring a strong run D?

The ground game might work. The Monarch offensive line is strong in pass protection for an attack that controls the clock for long stretches. Which team will turn the ball over less?

The Monarch defensive line will get in the backfield. UTEP’s won’t.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Arizona State vs UCLA Game Preview

Why Arizona State Will Win

The talent is there to come up with a big offensive performance against a UCLA D that’s good, but will give up yards.

The Sun Devils overcame the loss at BYU with a solid 35-13 at Colorado, with Jayden Daniels and the passing game taking over and the D dominating the struggling Buff attack.

ASU is moving the chains, the secondary has been strong, and the lines are good enough to hold up against the suddenly physical Bruins. Able to move the chains well and control the clock – helped by that D that gets off the field – the Sun Devils should dictate the tempo against a team that loves to make teams play its way.

However …

Week 5 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why UCLA Will Win

Arizona State beat Southern Utah, UNLV, and Colorado. None of those three have an offense, and the team failed the test at BYU.

UCLA has been battle tested. It beat LSU. It beat Stanford. It was a stop away from getting by a strong Fresno State. ASU has yet to prove it can push past adversity.

It starts with the infrastructure. The offensive line has been great at getting the ground game going and is good enough in pass protection. The biggest difference from a few years ago is the defensive front that’s been a rock against the run – it leads the Pac-12 allowing just 64 yards per game.

The Bruins will give up passing yards, but for the most part they’ve been able to hold up. Fresno State’s Jake Haener was the only one able to crack the code in the clutch, but …

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Jayden Daniels is good enough to pull this off if he gets into a groove.

The Arizona State passing game should be able to make this a fight, but UCLA showed against Stanford that it got back on track with a strong game at Stanford.

It’ll be a fun late night game with both offense trading shots, but the ASU running game will be held to a stop, UCLA will be balanced, and penalties will play a huge role.

The Sun Devils are getting crushed by flags – close to 11 per game. Those will matter.

Washington vs Oregon State Game Preview

Why Washington Will Win

Has this finally turned?

Washington was far better than it showed in the loss to Montana, and it wasn’t ready for primetime in the blowout loss to Michigan. The dominant win over Arkansas State was a start, and getting by a pesky Cal last week was a huge step.

The run defense has been fine, the passing game has started to improve, and the team is starting to find a way to get through the problems that are still there – it starts with the turnovers.

The Huskies still have problems giving the ball away, but the D took it away six times in the two wins after not forcing any turnovers in the two losses.

Oregon State might be improving, but it gets flagged way too much, the pass defense is an issue, and the D isn’t able to get off the field. However …

Week 5 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Oregon State Will Win

Oregon State takes the ball away. A lot.

Washington lost to Montana on three turnovers, and it gave the ball away three times against Arkansas State, but they didn’t matter. Oregon State has a few problems with giveaways – five on the year – but it’s been okay. The defense picked off USC four times and has nine takeaway so far.

It’s going to generate turnovers in this.

Oregon State has cranked up the ground attack, ripping through USC for 322 yards with BJ Baylor continuing his phenomenal start to the season averaging 6.9 yards per carry with seven scores.

Washington’s run defense is supposed to be great, but it still has to prove it against a team that commits to the ground attack.

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Oregon State has been just that good, but was the USC game a mirage?

It’s all up to the Washington offense and the how much it turns the ball over. The Beavers have been hit for over 300 yards through the air against all three FBS teams, and the Huskies will get there.

Oregon State will keep the offensive balance going, the D will generate two picks, and the team will continue to be one of the bigger stories of the Pac-12 season.

Washington State vs Cal Game Preview

Why Washington State Will Win

So what’s going right?

The offense isn’t working like it’s supposed to and the pass defense hasn’t been all that great, but there aren’t a lot of penalties and the D hasn’t been bad at taking the ball away with ten overall and two or more in every game.

Cal isn’t having a whole lot of luck, either.

The defense can’t come up with third down stops, the secondary has been lit up, and penalties have been a huge problem for a team desperate to generate a little positive momentum.

This is the week Wazzu’s passing game has to work, because …

Week 5 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Cal Will Win

Cal isn’t giving up anything on the ground – for the most part.

TCU was able to run for 271 yards, but no one else has hit 100 yards so far. Yes, the secondary has been lit up, but overall this really is a good enough defense talent-wise to be better than the numbers.

Offensively, the line hasn’t been bad, QB Chase Garbers is fighting the good fight, and the attack is putting up yards – it’s second in the Pac-12 in total offense, coming up with 441 per game.

All this will take is an early lead and a few stops from the beleaguered defense to pull this off. Washington State’s offense is awful on third downs.

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Cal finally ends up on the right side of the breaks.

Washington State just can’t get the offense going enough to keep up. The team played well early on in games, but it can’t keep up the pace with the rushing attack struggling and without the overall pop to keep up.

Cal might not be pretty, but it’ll take whatever win it can get.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Oregon vs Stanford Game Preview

Why Oregon Will Win

Can the offense continue to be consistently balanced?

It picked a great time to come up with its best running day of the season in the win over Ohio State, and there wasn’t a need to take a whole lot of big chances in the wins over Stony Brook and Arizona. It would’ve been nice to have played better against the Wildcats, but the Ducks were lousy and still managed to win 41-19.

Stanford is doing a lot of things right, but the run defense hasn’t been anything special, there aren’t enough defensive plays in the backfield, and Oregon should be able to take advantage of all of it.

The stats are a tad skewed after Arizona melted down late, but the Ducks lead the nation in takeaways with 13 overall and three or more in every game but the win over Ohio State. However …

Week 5 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Stanford Will Win

Stanford doesn’t have a turnover problem.

The defense hasn’t been able to generate a ton of takeaways – only three so far – but the offense hasn’t given the ball away in the last three games after turning it over twice against Kansas State.

For all of the good things Oregon does, the defense isn’t great on third downs and the pass defense hasn’t been a rock – even beyond the stat-skewing 484 yards against Ohio State.

Last week against UCLA was a stumble, but Tanner McKee continues to product with a season-high 293 yards and three touchdowns in the loss. He’s been good, he’s not making mistakes, and he’s just the type of quarterback who can pull this off if the defense can be a bit tighter.

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Can Oregon keep its focus and keep on winning?

It was able to get away with a loose performance against Arizona, but that’s not happening against Stanford – the Ducks have to be a whole lot sharper or else Mr. McKee will go off.

The Cardinal run defense won’t be good enough, and with no real pressure to keep Oregon QB Anthony Brown from relaxing and making the easy throws. It won’t be a breeze, but Brown will be effective enough to control the clock and the tempo.
