Kansas (0-1) vs Baylor (0-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Kansas Will Win

Kansas was outclassed and outplayed in the 38-23 loss to Coastal Carolina, but the passing game wasn’t bad, the rushing attack averaged close to five yards per carry, and the offense woke up in the second half.

There’s no excuse for the Big 12 team to lose at home to the Sun Belt squad – and for the second year in a row – but this looked like a Jayhawk team that could use some seasoning. It started to work as the game wore on, but the 28-3 deficit was way too much to overcome.

Meanwhile, Baylor has had a rough time getting the season going with postponement after postponement. Under the new coaching staff, the pass protection has to be a whole lot better, the defense has to fill in plenty of gaps, and it has to be sharp if the Kansas offense that improved late two weeks ago is good from the start.

Why Baylor Will Win

Kansas couldn’t handle the quickness of Coastal Carolina.

For all of the other issues the Jayhawks had in the opening game loss, the biggest one was on the lines. The Chanticleers came up with five sacks and 12 tackles for loss, and KU generated a grand total of zero sacks and just two tackles for loss.

Baylor’s offensive line was hardly a rock last season, but it gets back four starters and should be a whole lot stronger as the season goes on.

This isn’t the team of 2019 that came within a few plays of going off to the College Football Playoff, but enough parts are back – starting with QB Charlie Brewer – to be fine right away despite the lack of an opening game.

What’s Going To Happen

2007. That was the last time Kansas was able to beat Baylor.

Not only have the Jayhawks had problems with the Bears over the last several years, they’ve been obliterated.

How bad has this series been? Baylor has won ten in a row, and in nine of those wins, Kansas failed to score more than 14 points. Over the last five years the Jayhawks failed to score double digit points.

Baylor has outscored Kansas by an average of around 49-11 over the last ten years, including a 61-6 blasting last year.

The Bears haven’t played yet, but they’ll be just fine.

Oklahoma (1-0) vs Kansas State (0-1) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Kansas State Will Win

A whole lot of parts to the Kansas State puzzle and style worked just fine against Arkansas State in the 35-31 loss, and it all needs to be perfect again.

The Wildcats committed too many penalties – sinning eight times – but it dominated the time of possession battle by almost nine minutes, was +2 in turnover margin, and it just needed one last stop.

The offense wasn’t sharp enough – and give credit to Arkansas State – but the team had several chances to put the game away, and couldn’t quite do it.

This is still a fantastic Wildcat team with the offense that could flip the switch and be a whole lot more efficient and effective after the rough opener. Defensively, it should be able to hold down an Oklahoma ground game that couldn’t get much moving against Missouri State, but …

Why Oklahoma Will Win

Kansas State made the Arkansas State wide receivers look like future NFL stars, and now the secondary has to deal with the Oklahoma corps.

The Wildcats generated decent pressure, but they were still hammered for 330 passing yards and five touchdowns on big play after big play.

Enter Spencer Rattler and the Oklahoma passing game that got in its work against Missouri State with 31 first quarter points, four long touchdown passes and a ton of deep plays.

Oklahoma has the defensive front to keep Kansas State from establishing a steady running game and make Skylar Thompson become even more of a passer. He was fine against ASU, but the team isn’t built for a shootout. However …

What’s Going To Happen

Thompson was brilliant in last year’s 48-41 win over the Sooners, throwing for 213 yards and running for four scores in the upset.

Assume Oklahoma will be ready this time around.

Kansas State is a lot stronger than it looked against Arkansas State, but it’s going to struggle to keep up the pace when Rattler gets into a second half groove. The Wildcat pass rush will be good enough to give the new guy some problems, but the OU offense will be too strong as the game goes on.

West Virginia (1-0) vs Oklahoma State (1-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why West Virginia Will Win

The Oklahoma State offense that was expected to be among the nation’s most dangerous stalled out of the gate. Starting QB Spencer Sanders was knocked out early against Tulsa with an ankle injury, and it took a 13-point fourth quarter to get by 16-7.

Meanwhile, West Virginia rolled up 42 first half points in a blowout scrimmage over Eastern Kentucky with all the parts working just fine.

It was EKU, but it was still a good showing by a Mountaineer offense that needed to show that it could actually do something like it did two weeks ago. Defensively, West Virginia has the defensive front to keep OSU RB Chuba Hubbard from going off, and again, the quarterback situation is a question mark.

Week 4 Expert Picks: College Football

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

Oklahoma State is better than that.

It was a rocky opening in a weird year, and it took a whole lot of work to get by an okay Tulsa team, but the Cowboys played poorly and still got the win.

Chalk it up to an opening day funk.

West Virginia’s offense has the experience and talent to be far better, but it’s still going to have to prove it can produce against a good defense. Lost in the rough performance against the Golden Hurricane was a strong day from the Oklahoma State D that held down a dangerous attack.

On the positive side, PK Alex Hale hit all three of his field goals, promising young QB prospect Shane Illingworth was great after being thrown into the fire, and the talent is still there to explode.

But …

Week 3 Expert Picks: NFL

What’s Going To Happen

Hubbard was held to 106 yards and no touchdowns – the only time all regular season he didn’t score – in a 20-13 Oklahoma State win, and this year’s West Virginia team is a whole lot better.

West Virginia will press and make things even tougher for Oklahoma State than Tulsa did, but the Cowboy offense will be a whole lot sharper and crisper. It’ll have to win in the fourth quarter again, but it’ll get it done in a fun battle.

Texas (1-0) vs Texas Tech (1-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Texas Will Win

Here comes the Texas passing game.

Sam Ehlinger threw for 426 yards and five touchdowns in barely a half of work in the 59-3 over UTEP. Texas Tech? It got hammered by Bailey Zappe and Houston Baptist for 567 passing yards and four scores in the 35-33 Red Raider win.

The Longhorn offense was red-hot from the start, it’s got the offensive depth to keep the pressure on Texas Tech’s secondary throughout, and it’s going to let the running game eat, too.

Basically, the team had its tune-up game.

Houston Baptist didn’t get any pressure on Red Raider QB Alan Bowman. Texas will.

Week 4 Expert Picks: College Football

Why Texas Tech Will Win

Texas Tech got its tune-up game out of the way, too.

It might have been a rough second half against HBU, but it got to feel the pressure of a tight game, and it got the win. Texas went through a light scrimmage and wasn’t tested in any way.

Bowman threw for 430 yards and two touchdowns – he was sharp after missing most of last year – and SaRodorick Thompson provided a running game to balance things out a bit. Thompson was arrested after getting into a car race earlier this summer, but he’s expected to go.

The Texas Tech defense might have issues, but the offense will keep pushing all game long.

Week 3 Expert Picks: NFL

What’s Going To Happen

Texas Tech will get its yards, and it’ll make things interesting, but the Texas offense will hit on all cylinders. It’s not going to be Ehlinger throwing for 400 yards, but the attack will blow past the 500-yard mark with the running game taking over as the game goes on.

Iowa State (0-1) vs TCU (0-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Iowa State Will Win

You think Iowa State is a wee bit fired up after having to sit back and groove on that ugly 31-14 loss to Louisiana over the last few weeks?

The rough part about the defeat is that the D was fine. It kept the great Ragin’ Cajun offense in check, but a few special teams breakdowns – and too many offensive misfires – were too much to overcome.

TCU has yet to get its season going. It still has to work out its kinks.

Horned Frog QB Max Duggan is supposed to see a little time after getting diagnosed with a heart issue this offseason, but it’s Matthew Downing’s first start. He’s a walk-on about to go against a salty Cyclone D.

Week 4 Expert Picks: College Football

Why TCU Will Win

The Horned Frog defense was the best in the Big 12 last season, and if the corners rise up fast, it should be every bit as strong.

The linebacking corps is going to be outstanding, and the line should be decent enough to bring a little pressure to Brock Purdy, who struggled way too much against Louisiana hitting 16-of-35 passes.

Yeah, Iowa State has a game under its belt and TCU doesn’t, but TCU has tape on Iowa State. It’s also had weeks to adapt and adjust.

Week 3 Expert Picks: NFL

What’s Going To Happen

Be shocked if there are a whole lot of fireworks.

Iowa State lit up the Horned Frogs in a. 49-24 win at home, but this should be more like the 17-14 TCU win in Fort Worth in 2018.

Points will come at a premium, and Iowa State has the better quarterback with the veteran chops, but TCU’s defense will be slightly stronger in the fourth quarter. TCU will win the turnover battle to overcome a rough day from the O.

NC State (1-0) vs Virginia Tech (0-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why NC State Will Win

Now was that so hard?

After struggling offensively throughout last year, the Wolfpack got everything humming in a win over Wake Forest to start the season. QB Bailey Hockman was sharp, Ricky Person and the ground game were strong, and the 463 yards of total offense were the most the program put up in its last 11 games.

Now it gets a Virginia Tech team that hasn’t been able to get its season started.

There’s a whole lot of talent on the Hokies, but there are a whole lot of moving parts on the offensive side that has to hit the ground running against a NC State team that will bring the pass rush – six sacks against the Demon Deacons – along with the improved offensive production.

However …

Week 4 Expert Picks: College Football

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

NC State had a hard time putting the game away in the 45-42 win. Wake Forest keep on scoring, took advantage of several opportunities, and managed to keep pressing despite being outplayed.

Expect a much better defensive performance from the other side of NC State with Virginia Tech’s defense loaded with veterans who made a whole lot of tackles last year.

This group forced a slew of mistakes, and it should have enough up front to keep the pressure on. Wake Forest got behind the line, but it only came up with one sack.

Week 3 Expert Picks: NFL

What’s Going To Happen

It’ll be a ragged first performance for Virginia Tech, the energy will be there on the lines. The offense will step it up in the second half as QB Hendon Hooker and RB Khalil Herbert take turns coming up with big plays to take over the game.

Florida State (0-1) vs Miami (2-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Florida State Will Win

It’s been a rough few weeks.

First, FSU starts its season – and the Mike Norvell era – with a clunker of a home loss to Georgia Tech, star DB Hamsah Nasirildeen missed the game as he’s still trying to come back from a torn ACL, and Norvell contracted the coronavirus.

On the plus side, the Noles were miserable and still had several shots to win the game.

Nasirildeen is expected to be back, the defense has had a few weeks to ramp it up after an okay opener, and the offense should start turning it loose.

This was a team that desperately looked and played like it needed a tune-up – but that’s what Georgia Tech was supposed to be.

James Blackman is a veteran quarterback who should be able to push the ball down the field a bit against a Miami secondary that struggled against Malik Cunningham and Louisville. Defensively, the Noles have the starting 11 to keep Cane QB D’Eriq King from getting too creative, but …

Week 4 Expert Picks: College Football

Why Miami Will Win

Florida State’s offensive line hasn’t been fixed yet.

It allowed three sacks and six tackles for loss against Georgia, didn’t spring the big holes for the ground game, and never let Blackman settle in. Now it goes against a Miami defensive front that’s a whole lot stronger than the stats look over the first few weeks.

The offensive line is the real star – even more so than King – plowing away for almost 500 yards in the first two games with five touchdowns and averaging over six yards per carry. However …

Week 3 Expert Picks: NFL

What’s Going To Happen

King is the real deal, and he’s showing it off under new Miami offensive coordinator Rhett Lashlee. There’s a night-and-day difference in the Hurricanes after two games – there’s a swagger back, even if it’s just a sliver of what it was when the program was really rocking.

This isn’t a Florida State program that exudes a whole lot of confidence at the moment, but it’s the Miami game. It’ll be a battle for about a half, and then the Hurricane lines will take over in the fourth straight win in the series for The U.

Duke (0-2) vs Virginia (0-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Duke Will Win

Duke has been awful so far in its first two games, but at least it played two games.

Virginia is finally able to get its season going, but as we’ve seen so far – for the most part – teams aren’t exactly coming out of the gates roaring. It’s been rocky for too many teams in their first games, and there’s a chance Duke worked out a few kinks.

There’s no shame in losing on the road to Notre Dame, and the defense wasn’t totally miserable in the loss to Boston College. Overall, the D came into the season expected to be okay, and it’s been solid against the run. It’ll hold its own against the Cavalier ground game, but …

Why Virginia Will Win

Duke’s pass defense has been ripped to shreds.

Star CB Mark Gilbert might be back after injury problems, but the secondary isn’t coming up with stops on a regular basis. Notre Dame’s Ian Book and Boston College’s Phil Jurkovec – a Notre Dame transfer – combined for 563 yards and three scores taking target practice to keep the chains moving.

Virginia QB Brennan Armstrong has been in the system long enough to know what he’s doing. Give him a little time, and he’ll be effective.

What’s Going To Happen

Duke hasn’t done a thing so far to keep its offense on the field.

Virginia should have the ball for at least 35 minutes as it doesn’t take a whole lot of chances, relies on a good defense, and gets a good day out of Armstrong without enough mistakes for the Blue Devils to capitalize on.

Georgia Tech (1-1) vs Syracuse (0-2) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Georgia Tech Will Win

The Yellow Jackets had a strong first six quarters before succumbing to UCF in a 49-21 loss. The offense finally has a passing game again.

How many times did the offense hit the 200-yard mark last year? Twice.

How many times did it get to 200 passing yards in 2017 and 2018? Zero.

How many times did it get to 200 in 2015 and 2016? Three times.

Freshman Jeff Sims threw for 277 yards against Florida State and 244 against UCF. He might have given up two picks in each of the first two games, but he’s also been the type of quarterback to build around for the next few years.

But this is the game for the pass rush.

The Syracuse offensive front has been awful – allowing 14 sacks and 25 tackles for loss in the first two games – and it’s about to struggle again with the rising Yellow Jacket defensive front about to do a strong job of getting behind the line.

Why Syracuse Will Win

Georgia Tech has been a turnover machine.

It was able to be a +1 in turnover margin in the win over Florida State, but the five giveaways against UCF were disastrous. Combine that with the 17 penalties in the first two games, and the Orange should be helped by a slew of Yellow Jacket mistakes.

So what’s going right so far for Syracuse? The defensive front hasn’t been bad, the run D has been okay, and overall, the team has a timing problem that might be fixed with more reps. After two games with the offense a bit off, there have been chances and opportunities that could start to click in Game 3.

This is a team that could’ve desperately have used a few dates with Cupcake State before diving into ACC play.

What’s Going To Happen

Can Syracuse block anyone?

Georgia Tech isn’t going to be perfect, but it’ll continue to scratch and claw its way through the mistakes, and it’ll bring the funk into the Orange backfield just like North Carolina and Pitt did.

Don’t expect anything aesthetically pleasing, but it’ll be a close game with Syracuse finding a wee bit of an offense now that it’s finally at home. It won’t be enough to pull off a win.
