Why San Francisco Will Win

Sam Darnold isn’t Kyler Murray.

Darnold is still taking too many sacks, he’s missing too many receivers, and he’s struggling too much to consistently move the offense. Murray wasn’t razor sharp in the win over the 49ers, but he was able to take off and run as part of the team’s 180 yards on the ground.

New York won’t have much help for the ground game with LeVeon Bell out and Frank Gore the main option, meaning it’s up to Darnold to rise up against a Niner pass rush that should be far more effective this week.

Why New York Jets Will Win

The Jet defense was able to keep the Buffalo running backs from doing much of anything in the 27-17 loss. Sort of like San Francisco with Murray, the Jets had a hard time dealing with Josh Allen and his running ability.

That’s not an issue with Jimmy Garoppolo.

The 49er passing game struggled throughout the loss to Arizona, with Garoppolo only hitting 19-of-33 passes with most of his production coming on two big pass plays.

Don’t let the San Francisco offensive line pound away with the running game, make Garoppolo win this with George Kittle hobbling, at best.

Fantasy Football Player To Watch

RB Frank Gore, New York 
Seriously? You’re thinking about Frank Gore as a possible fantasy option? He’s likely going to get a bulk of the carries, but Josh Adams got the goal line touchdown run against the Bills. Now Adams is on the practice squad, and La’Mical Perine and Halen Ballage will fight for carries behind Gore.

What’s Going To Happen

San Francisco just couldn’t get its defense off the field against Arizona. Murray was too effective, and the D had a nasty time generating a third down stop. That won’t be a problem this week.

The 49ers won’t have any problems slowing down a punchless Jet offense. This is where San Francisco starts to look the part again on the lines.

Why Detroit Will Win

It’s amazing how D’Andre Swift drops a sure-thing game-winning touchdown pass and now the Lions are awful, Matt Stafford couldn’t come through, Matt Patricia is a horrible NFL head coach – okay, uhhhhh, on that last part – but the 27-23 collapse to Chicago has suddenly made this a must-win game.

Stafford was solid with almost 300 passing yards, Adrian Peterson came up with a tough 93 yards, and the offense worked. Minnesota was able to average over six yards per carry against the Green Bay defensive front last week, and now the Detroit ground game gets its turn.

Why Green Bay Will Win

Aaron Rodgers showed up against the Vikings.

The Minnesota secondary might be a problem, but Rodgers kept the pressure up with 364 yards and four touchdown passes in a brilliant performance in the 43-34 win.

Let’s put it this way – Detroit got dunked on by Mitchell Trubisky in the fourth quarter.

Give Rodgers time to work – the Lion pass rush didn’t do nearly enough against the Bears – and his terrific receiving corps will help take care of the rest. If Chicago could roll when it upped the pace, so can Green Bay.

Fantasy Football Player To Watch

RB Adrian Peterson, Detroit 
The Detroit ground game will eventually be the D’Andre Swift show, at least for one week, Peterson showed he still had it with his 14 carries for 93 yards. He didn’t have the same burst – a few of the runs against Chicago would’ve been house calls a few years ago – but he ran hard and averaged 6.6 yards per carry.

What’s Going To Happen

The Green Bay offense might have been unstoppable against the Vikings, but watch out for Detroit to do more than enough to keep up the pace with a balanced attack and enough of a rush to at least bother Rodgers. Stafford will get to 300 yards, but the Packers will come up with more than 400 yards of total offense again.

Yeah, the Cleveland running game. It hardly crushed the Baltimore defense, but Kareem Hunt and Nick Chubb combined to average close to six yards per carry. It’s not like the Browns abandoned the run, but it didn’t work well enough when Mayfield wasn’t helping through the air.

Houston won’t have that issue with Deshaun Watson.

He ran for a touchdown in the 34-20 loss to Kansas City, but he wasn’t quite right. Under pressure from the Chief defense seemingly all game long, he never got into a groove. However, if David Johnson can have early success – he averaged seven yards per carry and then was forgotten about – the Texans can keep Jackson and that offense off the field.

Controlling the tempo and time of possession will mean everything.

Fantasy Football Player To Watch

RB JK Dobbins, Baltimore
Mark Ingram got more carries – 10 to 7 – and Lamar Jackson will always be the team’s best runner, but Dobbins was the most effective runner in the red zone with the team’s two rushing scores against the Browns. He only ran for 22 yards and he didn’t catch any passes, but he’s a must-start as he pushes Ingram for time.

What’s Going To Happen

Houston’s defense got torched by Clyde Edwards-Helaire in the loss to the Chiefs, and now it’s about to get rumbled over by all the Baltimore rushing options. Watson will still have problems when Will Fuller isn’t making big plays, but he’ll keep bombing away to keep the Texans in the game enough to make it interesting.

Why New England Will Win

For all the hype and talk about Cam Newton and his great start in the 21-11 win over Miami, the defense was the real star. It kept Miami out of the end zone until the fourth quarter and held on from there.

There wasn’t a whole lot of pressure into the backfield, but the Patriots bothered Ryan Fitzpatrick enough to force three interceptions and were able to stuff the Dolphin ground game.

More than anything else, the Patriots need to maintain control and keep Russell Wilson and the Seahawk offense off the field. They held the ball for well over 35 minutes against Miami – they can’t get into a shootout.

Why Seattle Will Win

Russell Wilson was phenomenal against Atlanta, even though he was bothered and hit enough force him to hurry a bit. All he did was connect on 31-of-35 passes for 322 yards and four scores, and led the team with 29 rushing yards.

The defense might have been bombed on by Matt Ryan and an Atlanta offense that tried to get back in the game, but it was a blowout by the fourth quarter – there were a whole lot of empty yards among Ryan’s 450. New England doesn’t have Atlanta’s receivers.

Fantasy Football Player To Watch

RB Chris Carson, Seattle
The good. He caught six passes for 45 yards and two touchdowns. The bad. He ran just six times for 21 yards. He wasn’t needed much in the blowout as Wilson was in total command with the passing game, he he’s not doing much as a receiver against the Pats D, he’s going to struggle.

What’s Going To Happen

The Seahawks will make Newton start throwing, and he’ll be fine. Wilson will be better. New England’s defense will keep this from getting out of hand and should get around Wilson enough to keep him from bombing deep, but when Newton isn’t on, the Patriots will stall.

Josh Allen appears to have the offense down.

He led the team in rushing with 57 yards and a score in the 27-17 win over the Jets, he threw for 312 yards and two scores, and he didn’t make any massive mistakes after a big lead. The defense did the rest of the work from there.

It wasn’t a perfect day from the Buffalo defense, but it stuffed the New York ground game and shouldn’t have too many issues with a punchless Dolphin backfield. Miami tried to run against New England in the 21-11 loss, but it didn’t work.

Can the rest of the Buffalo running game get working if Allen isn’t taking off? The gruesome twosome of Devin Singletary and Zack Moss combined for just 41 yards and no touchdowns on 18 carries.

When Cam Newton wasn’t taking off, New England’s ground game stalled. Miami’s defensive front was able to get into the backfield just enough to be a problem – it stalled.

For all of the yards and all of the success, the Bills had a bit of a hard time to put the Jets away.

The new star Bill wide receiver led the way with eight catches for 86 yards against the Jets, but John Brown was targeted a bit more and there weren’t a whole lot of big plays down the field. Allen has the arm to get him the ball, but now Diggs has to get free.

What’s Going To Happen

Will Allen do to the Dolphins what Cam Newton did last week? Maybe, but the running backs will get involved a little bit more. Miami doesn’t have the offensive weapons to keep up after Buffalo gets out to a big start for a second straight week.

The passing game certainly worked.

Atlanta had a whole slew of issues in the 38-25 loss to Seattle, but Matt Ryan and the Falcons bombed away for 450 yards with three different receivers hitting the 100-yard mark.

Dallas did a decent job overall defensively in the 20-17 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, but the secondary wasn’t pressed by the passing game like it should’ve been. The Rams worked the ground game, but Jared Goff was effective – averaging almost nine yards per pass – when he got his chances.

Atlanta won’t be afraid to run Todd Gurley and Brian Hill, but it’s on Ryan to make this work.

Why Dallas Will Win

The new coaching staff is working ways to get Ezekiel Elliott the ball in a variety of ways. He touched the ball 25 times, was great in space on his three catches, and he was effective and tough against the terrific Ram defensive front.

But this game is about Dak Prescott.

Russell Wilson destroyed the Atlanta secondary for 322 yards and four scores  on a 31-of-35 day, even though he was pressured throughout. Prescott was solid against the Rams, but the offense stalled in the second half. After playing it relatively safe – until the end with that oh-so-questionable pass interference call – this is the week to he’ll start airing it out a bit more.

Fantasy Football Player To Watch

WR Calvin Ridley, Atlanta 
Julio Jones will always be Atlanta’s top receiver, and Russell Gage caught nine passes for 114 yards against Seattle, but Ridley caught both of Matt Ryan’s touchdown passes. The work will still be distributed equally, but Ridley is crawling up into fantasy No. 1 receiver territory with another big game.

What’s Going To Happen

Dallas will overcome a few questionable calls – both by the officials and the coaching staff – in the opening weekend loss to settle in and be more effective. The run defense won’t get pounded on like it did against the Rams, Prescott will be terrific, and the defense will overcome another big day from Ryan for the win.

The Tennessee offensive backfield should get plenty of time to work.

Indianapolis didn’t run the ball all that consistently or well against the Jaguars, but that’s partly because Phil Rivers threw it 46 times and moved things with the midrange passes right up until those yards didn’t turn into points.

Or, because he threw two bad picks.

Ryan Tannehill didn’t throw any interceptions in the 16-14 win over Denver, and Derrick Henry had to work way too hard to get to 116 yards. Don’t expect any pressure from the Jacksonville defensive front – Tannehill and Henry won’t be too bothered.

RB James Robinson, Jacksonville 
Is he really going to be the Jacksonville running game? The booting of Leonard Fournette and a slew of injuries pushed Robison into the lead role, and he ran 16 times for 62 yards. He was the only player in the NFL last weekend who handled all of his team’s running back carries, but can he do more with his opportunities?

What’s Going To Happen

Tennessee will look and play more like Tennessee is supposed to. Henry won’t have to work as hard as he needed to on Monday night, the defense will keep the Jacksonville running game from doing anything, and yeah, PK Stephen Gostkowski – after his nightmare of a game against Denver – will be just fine.

The Denver run defense now knows what it’s getting.

James Conner is banged up, Ben Roethlisberger isn’t going to push the passing game too much yet, and it should be the Benny Snell show. Derrick Henry ran for 116 yards on the Broncos, but it was a grind to get there – he was never able to take over the game.

It was hardly a big offensive performance for the Broncos, but Drew Lock moved the attack late and gave the team a chance. New York QB Daniel Jones had his issues, but he was able to push the ball deep on the Steeler secondary in the 26-16 Steeler win.

Why Pittsburgh Will Win

This defense is the truth – or the New York Giants are just that punchless.

Or it’s a mixture of the two.

The Steelers bottled up Saquon Barkley and a running game that finished with just 29 yards with nothing happening throughout the game on the ground. The Denver rushing attack was okay against Tennessee, but outside of one good Melvin Gordon run it struggled.

The Steeler defensive front will live in the backfield all season long, and it should push for double-digit tackles for loss for a second straight game.

Fantasy Football Player To Watch

RB Benny Snell, Pittsburgh
James Conner ran for nine yards before bowing out with an ankle injury – he wasn’t able to find any room to move before getting hurt. Snell ran for an effective 113 yards on 19 carries, looking like the team’s lead back no matter what Conner’s status is. No matter what, though, assume a rotation of Pittsburgh running backs – but with Snell the lead man.

What’s Going To Happen

Enjoy the defense.

The Denver offense will struggle to get into any sort of a groove, but the Pittsburgh running game won’t go anywhere on a consistent basis, either. Expect enough big things from Denver’s Jerry Jeudy and Pittsburgh’s JuJu Smith-Schuster to add a few fireworks, but also – after the massive kicking issues by Tennessee’s Stephen Gostkowski – expect Pittsburgh’s Chris Boswell to be solid.

Why Carolina Will Win

Will Tom Brady have the wide receivers to throw to? Chris Godwin is supposed to be fine, but he’s banged up and missed time this week, and Mike Evans – who wasn’t close to right in the loss to New Orleans – is still fighting through a hamstring injury.

The Buccaneers don’t have the ground game to pick up the offense if Brady and the passing game aren’t great.

The Panthers outgained Las Vegas in the 34-30 loss, but they had problems with Josh Jacobs and the thump of the Raider offensive line on a steady basis. That’s not going to be that big of an issue against the Bucs.

Why Tampa Bay Will Win

Make Teddy Bridgewater beat you.

He was good against Las Vegas, but there were way too many misfires going 22-of-34. The Tampa Bay defensive front was able to keep Alvin Kamara to 16 rushing yards while allowing five catches for 51 yards and a score. Turn Christian McCaffrey into a receiver and hold him down on the ground, and everything should be okay.

On the other side, Carolina didn’t generate a lick of pass rush into the Raider backfield. Brady should get a whole lot more time to work.

Fantasy Football Player To Watch

WR Robby Anderson, Carolina
Is he going to be Bridgewater’s go-to guy? DJ Moore caught four passes against Las Vegas, and McCaffrey will always be a part of the passing attack, but with a 75-yard play, Anderson led the team with six catches for 115 yards and that one late fourth quarter score.

What’s Going To Happen

The focus will be on the superstar offensive guys in each team’s backfield, but the game will be more about the Tampa Bay defensive line than Brady or McCaffrey. The Carolina O line did a strong job against the Raiders, but the Buc defensive front will take over this week.

What’s Going To Happen

Don’t get too bogged down in the Eagles being so hurt. However, the lack of pop from the wide receivers will be a big problem for an offense that doesn’t have the rushing game to overcome the other issues.
