Why Boston College Will Win

Boston College is … fun?

It’s not like the program was boring over the last several years, but there was a lot of rushing, steady defense, and decent performances on the way to a bowl game – usually.

Now, under new head coach Jeff Hafley, the offense is winging it around with Notre Dame transfer Phil Jurkovec – averaging close to 300 yards per game through the air – but there still aren’t a ton of turnovers and the O is doing a nice job of controlling the clock.

Virginia Tech is struggling with the passing game, the run defense is getting ripped up, and and it’s got the second-to-last in the ACC in total defense, but …

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

The O knows how to score, and now it’s starting to get back to normal.

QB Hendon Hooker wasn’t healthy early on, and he split time last week against North Carolina, but it seems like he’s about to be his normal self – at least that’s the indication.

He doesn’t have to do it all, though.

The transfer combination of Khalil Herbert and Raheem Blackshear is ripping it up for the running game for an offense that leads the ACC in scoring. The offensive line is playing well, the pass rush has been outstanding, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Here comes the Virginia Tech running game.

It’s averaging close to 300 yards per game with 11 touchdowns in the first three games, and now it gets to roll against a Boston College defense that dealt with North Carolina, but that’s about it for decent ground attacks.

Boston College has lost its last eight games as a program – and 11 games against FBS teams – when allowing 170 rushing yards or more. Virginia Tech has hit the 170-yard mark – as a program – in each of its last five games and in nine of its last 11.

North Carolina (2-0) vs Virginia Tech (2-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why North Carolina Will Win

The Tar Heel defensive front has been fantastic, allowing a nation-low 108 yards so far in the two games – Syracuse and Boston College combined to average just two yards per carry.

Granted, those two teams don’t have big-time ground games, but the pass rush has been dominant, the tackles for loss are coming in waves, and the defense as a whole has been able to come through when needed.

The offense might be a tad erratic, but it’s moving the chains well and has a decent balance. As long as the O can do a better job of putting the biscuit in the basket – there are a few too many empty drives for all the talent on this team – it’ll put the pressure on a Virginia Tech offense that’s still trying to get the passing game going, but …

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

Hendon Hooker is back.

The Hokie star quarterback missed the first few games after being in quarantine, but now he’s a full-go. Braxton Burmeister has been fine, but he’s only hitting 44% of his throws. Now the offense has options, but it’ll still be about handing the ball off.

UNC might have a terrific run defense, but it hasn’t faced anything like this. Burmeister has run well, but it’s been Kansas transfer Khalil Herbert who’s been the star, averaging over 12 yards per carry with 311 yards and three scores, and Rutgers transfer Raheem Blackshear is adding pop, too.

On the defensive side, the Hokies lead the nation in sacks. Emmanuel Belmar and company have 13 sacks so far, and now they should generate pressure on Tar Heel QB Sam Howell.

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

What’s Going To Happen

The winner will be the clear No. 3 team in the ACC pecking order behind Clemson and Notre Dame.

Virginia Tech hasn’t been fully healthy so far, but it’s getting there. North Carolina hasn’t been fully sharp so far, but it’s getting there. The Hokies have the firepower, the defensive pressure, and now it has its star quarterback in the mix to go along with the great running game.

It’ll be a blast of a back-and-forth firefight – the last team with the ball wins.

Virginia Tech (1-0) vs Duke (0-3) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

Duke has been a hot mess.

There are just enough decent parts on both sides to be better – the defense is giving it that old college try – but the offense can’t stop screwing up.

The O couldn’t bust through in the opening game loss to Notre Dame, and ie managed just six points to a Boston College team that got pushed by Texas State in the final seconds.

Last week against Virginia there was nothing happening on the ground, and one big overarching problem kept on going.

Turnovers.

The Blue Devils have given the ball away 14 times in three games with five against BC and seven – five of them picks – against Virginia.

Virginia Tech was +2 in turnover margin in its 45-24 win over NC State.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Duke Will Win

Just how healthy is Virginia Tech?

It might have rolled by NC State last week, but it was missing 23 player including star QB Hendon Hooker. He’s expected to be in the mix against the Blue Devils, but this still isn’t a deep team at the moment.

Duke just has to stop screwing up.

The defense is getting behind the line, it’s generating decent pressure, and it’s been good enough against the run to get by. Now the offense has to stop giving the ball away with its seven fumbles and seven interceptions.

Hold on against the Virginia Tech pressure, and the Blue Devils have a shot to push this late into the second half and keep it close.

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

What’s Going To Happen

When fully healthy, Virginia Tech belongs in the discussion of top four ACC teams. It’s still not close to 100% overall, but Duke isn’t getting a thing out of its passing game on a consistent basis, ad the defense – for all of its positives – is getting hammered too hard by everyone’s passing attack over the first three weeks.

Virginia Tech needs a settled quarterback situation with backup Braxton Burmeister leaving the NC State game hurt, but the lines will do their part to carry the team.

NC State (1-0) vs Virginia Tech (0-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why NC State Will Win

Now was that so hard?

After struggling offensively throughout last year, the Wolfpack got everything humming in a win over Wake Forest to start the season. QB Bailey Hockman was sharp, Ricky Person and the ground game were strong, and the 463 yards of total offense were the most the program put up in its last 11 games.

Now it gets a Virginia Tech team that hasn’t been able to get its season started.

There’s a whole lot of talent on the Hokies, but there are a whole lot of moving parts on the offensive side that has to hit the ground running against a NC State team that will bring the pass rush – six sacks against the Demon Deacons – along with the improved offensive production.

However …

Week 4 Expert Picks: College Football

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

NC State had a hard time putting the game away in the 45-42 win. Wake Forest keep on scoring, took advantage of several opportunities, and managed to keep pressing despite being outplayed.

Expect a much better defensive performance from the other side of NC State with Virginia Tech’s defense loaded with veterans who made a whole lot of tackles last year.

This group forced a slew of mistakes, and it should have enough up front to keep the pressure on. Wake Forest got behind the line, but it only came up with one sack.

Week 3 Expert Picks: NFL

What’s Going To Happen

It’ll be a ragged first performance for Virginia Tech, the energy will be there on the lines. The offense will step it up in the second half as QB Hendon Hooker and RB Khalil Herbert take turns coming up with big plays to take over the game.
