Why Southern Miss Will Win

There’s the Southern Miss offense.

The Golden Eagles came up with their best performance of the season, and it all led to a 41-31 win over North Texas. The passing game has been solid all season long, but last week the ground attack was added to the mix with a season-high 202 yards to balance things out.

UTEP doesn’t have the firepower to keep up if USM can do that again.

The downfield passing game is fine, there aren’t many problems with turnovers, and there’s no reason to worry about a Miner offense that’s averaging 334 yards per game. But …

Why UTEP Will Win

The Southern Miss offensive performance last week might be a bit of a mirage – North Texas doesn’t play any defense.

UTEP does.

The Miners might not have a high-powered offense, but the D has done a strong job at getting behind the line, and the run defense has been as good as it’s been in years.

The offensive line is doing a decent job of holding down good defensive fronts from getting behind the line, the passing game is averaging close to 14 yards per completion.

This is not your 2019 UTEP team.

What’s Going To Happen

Can UTEP really get to 4-2 for the first time since 2010 when the team started the season 5-1? It really is playing just well enough to pull this off, but the offense won’t be able to come through in the clutch.

The Golden Eagles might have a whole slew of issues, but the passing game is doing just fine. UTEP has held down everyone by Texas, but this week the offense will be pushed too much out of its comfort zone to pull it off.

Why UTEP Will Win

We live in a world where UTEP is 3-1. After so many years of pain and frustration, how is this happening?

The defense is doing a solid job of getting off the field, and the passing game is hitting the downfield passes for the first time in years.

Take out the outlier against Texas, and in the three wins, UTEP’s defense has allowed teams to convert just 5-of-31 third down tries – ULM was 0-for-11 – and QB Gavin Hardison is connecting on big plays to open things up a big, averaging over eight yards per pass.

On the flip side, Louisiana Tech’s D is a disaster on third downs – teams are hitting 60% of their tries.

Why Louisiana Tech Will Win

The Louisiana Tech offense might have had problems against BYU, but it’s putting up points in bunches.

The combination of Luke Anthony and Austin Allen have been fine for the passing attack, with Anthony throwing ten touchdown passes with two picks. UTEP’s defense might be playing better than it has in years, and it’s great on third downs, but let’s do a little roll slowing. The secondary is getting hit for enough deep plays to be a problem, but …

What’s Going To Happen

UTEP really is playing well – taking the Texas game a bit out of the mix. The running game is doing enough to have a little control in games, and the defense isn’t getting gouged, allowing 14 points or fewer in the three wins.

That slows down this week.

Louisiana Tech will get up early, the offense will set a pace UTEP can’t keep up with, and Skip Holtz’s team will get back on track after the 45-14 blasting at BYU.

Why UTEP Will Win

The Miners aren’t screwing things up too much. They only have three turnovers in the first three games, and the 15 penalties have been manageable in the close wins over Stephen F. Austin and Abilene Christian.

The offense hasn’t been explosive, but its been opportunistic. The ULM attack hasn’t shown up over the first two games, struggling to find any semblance of a running game averaging just 2.3 yards per carry. UTEP’s defensive front got barreled over by Texas, but it’s only allowed three touchdowns on the ground so far.

Why ULM Will Win

Can UTEP handle a decent passing game?

Texas and Sam Ehlinger took target practice in the 59-3 win, and even in the two victories the Miners had problems coming up with stops on the short-to-midrange passes.

ULM won’t get the same production at quarterback it enjoyed over the last several years from Caleb Evans, but Colby Suits threw for 377 yards against Texas State and is hitting 68% of his throws. If he gets hot early and the Warhawks come up with a few early scores, UTEP won’t be able to keep up.

What’s Going To Happen

ULM will finally get a break.

UTEP’s offensive front won’t generate enough of a push for the ground game to matter, and Suits and the Warhawk passing game will do enough in the first half to be comfortable in the second.

Why SFA Will Win

It’s not like UTEP is poised and ready to become 2019 LSU.

One of the worst teams in college football over the last few seasons should be a bit stronger, but the Miner offense that struggled to do much of anything consistently right isn’t going to be explosive enough to run away with this game and hide.

The Lumberjack secondary has a slew of good hitters – starting with veteran S Trenton Gordon – and end Marcus Mosley is a good enough pass rusher to be a problem.

On the other side, the Miner defense that was the worst in the nation at coming up with tackles for loss isn’t going to do enough in the backfield to bother the SFA passing game. But …

Why UTEP Will Win

Stephen F. Austin isn’t going to do enough to get behind the line, either. The lines aren’t going to be good enough to hold up, but it’s the lack of a pass rush that’s going to be the biggest help for a Miner offense that needs all the time it can get.

UTEP isn’t going to get too crazy here. It’s going to start running early on, rely on what should be an improved offensive front, and it’s not going to take too many chances. Turnovers shouldn’t be too much of a problem – if any – as the team should be around a +2, and that should be enough …

What’s Going To Happen

UTEP can’t take anyone for granted, but losing to Stephen F. Austin would be devastating for a program that has just two wins over the last three seasons.

The Miners will do something they haven’t been able to do a whole lot of – if at all – over the last several seasons, and that’s dominate on the lines. They’ll take control late with two good drives, but they’ll have to hang on in the final moments.

5. Conference USA 2020 Preview: The League Has Found Its Niche

We know what Conference USA is in the college football world.

It’s certainly not going to be like the American Athletic Conference and start inviting itself into a club without the password, and it’s not quite as strong as the Mountain West, but it’s ahead of the MAC and Sun Belt.

And that’s just fine. The league is going to be plenty fun where it is, especially this season.

It proved itself here and there last year – WKU whacked around Arkansas, and Louisiana Tech stunned Miami in the Independence Bowl – but assuming it’ll be a self-contained conference in this craziest of seasons, it’s equipped to stand out from the pack even without all the dates against the Power Fivers.

It’s set up for a good season with the potential for two terrific division races.

The power is mostly in the East with Florida Atlantic, WKU and Marshall all good enough to win it, and with Middle Tennessee and FIU right there with a shot to knocking off the Owls for the top spot. The West has killers up top in UAB, Louisiana Tech and Southern Miss in what should be a whale of a three-way battle.

As always, though, Conference USA has it’s issues with the bottom teams. To get into the discussion to be better than the Mountain West, the league needs UTEP, UTSA and Rice to be more than roadkill for the top teams. It would help if Old Dominion bounced back from a rough year.

There should be around nine, maybe ten teams all good enough play with everyone else. Plenty of teams have a shot, several young and new coaches are joining the fun to go along with the elder statesmen, and most of all, this will be among the competitive and unpredictable leagues going.
