Jags officially name Urban Meyer their new HC

The Jags now have a new coach and I will be former Gators coach Urban Meyer.

The Jacksonville Jaguars have wrapped up their head coaching search, and as many expected, their guy heading forward will be former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer. The team made the announcement official Thursday night, though the terms haven’t been revealed yet.

Meyer, 56, is a coach who fans of the Jacksonville area are quite familiar with as he was once the head coach of the Florida Gators football program from 2005-10. During that time in Gainesville, he was able to win a national title in 2006 and 2008 before stepping down for health and family reasons.

Meyer returned to the college game in 2012 as the head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes and was able to add another national title to his collection in 2014. He spent six seasons with the Buckeyes but ended up retiring in 2018 after a tumultuous season where he was suspended and dealt with more health concerns due to a brain cyst.

Meyer will inherit what most believe is the best head coaching vacancy in the NFL. He’ll have 11 draft picks available to use in April including the No. 1 overall selection which most assume would be used to select Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence. The Jags are also projected to have the most salary cap of any team this offseason ($73.3 million).

Meyer met with the team last Friday then again on Wedenesday, and clearly, Shad Khan and company liked what they heard. Now, the next order of business will be to put a veteran staff with NFL experience in place.

The Jags fired Doug Marrone last Monday after four seasons with the team. He finished his tenure with a record of 23-43 and a 2-1 postseason record.

When including interim Mel Tucker, Meyer will be the Jaguars’ seventh coach. He will enter his NFL tenure as one of the most decorated collegiate coaches ever with a 187-32 NCAA record and a 12-3 record when it comes to bowl games.

Urban Meyer will be making it official with the Jacksonville Jaguars soon and fans are anticipating him to sign the dotted line. With the college football season over, the three-time national champion and Fox Sports analyst arrived in Jacksonville today.

Meyer began his day hopping off a private jet Thursday afternoon at Cecil Airport. He then made his way to TIAA Bank Field, which could lead to an official statement and deal later.

Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Meyer and the Jags had ‘advanced talks’ Wednesday towards finalizing a deal. Hours later, Twitter user @E_Dilla revealed that Meyer had touched down in Jacksonville around 12:38 EST, then Ben Ryan of Action News Jax reported Meyer’s arrival at the stadium around 2:30 EST.

The Jags have been rumored to have Meyer on their radar for quite some time and owner Shad Khan has been working hard to make his acquisition happen. As a result, the Jags have arguably been the NFL’s hottest topic of Thursday as fans await the dominoes to start falling in terms of vacancies.

When the ink becomes dry, Meyer will be the Jags’ fifth coach (sixth if you include interim Mel Tucker). He’ll be taking over a vacancy left by former head coach Doug Marrone, who was fired last Monday.

After having “advanced talks” with former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer Wednesday,  business has really picked up between the three-time national champion and the Jacksonville Jaguars. Per Jeremey Fowler of ESPN, those discussions will lead to a deal getting done Thursday.

Meyer, 56, is a familiar face to the Jacksonville community after the time he spent as the Florida Gators’ football coach in 2005-10. While there he won two of his national titles and retired. After stepping away from the game for a bit, he returned as the head coach of his alma mater, Ohio State, from 2012-18 where he won his third title (2014).

With the Jags struggling to win under owner Shad Khan, they will be turning to a coach in Meyer who has been pretty solid at garnering victories. While coaching in the NCAA he’s garnered a 187-32 record (12-3 bowl record), which is good for a .856% win percentage.

Meyer’s biggest task (aside from winning) will be to likely coach up quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who undoubtedly will be the No. 1 overall pick. When considering he’s coached two first round quarterback talents in Tim Tebow and Alex Smith, he might just be the right man for the job.

Report: Chargers remain interested in Urban Meyer as Jags await a decision on vacancy

The Jags have yet to get a concrete decision from Urban Meyer and it could be because another team is expressing interest.

Another day passed without the Jacksonville Jaguars naming a head coach or general manager Tuesday. Per NFL insiders Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo,  the reason for that is because Urban Meyer has yet to decide on if he wants to take the job, or any NFL coaching vacancy for that matter.

If the wait wasn’t already concerning, Rapoport reported that the Jags have some competition in the Meyer sweepstakes late Wednesday morning. That team is the Los Angeles Chargers, who parted ways with coach Anthony Lynn Monday.

While the Chargers interest in Meyer isn’t necessarily a reason to panic, it should be concerning. Some would argue that they may be a better option than the Jags because they already have a franchise quarterback (Justin Herbert), receiver (Keenan Allen), and pass-rusher (Joey Bosa) in place. That said, if Meyer wants a situation that would be less stressful in the immediate future, then the Chargers may be a better option.

As time passes, concerns will only grow for the Jags in terms of finding a coaching solution. However, if the Jags want to name a general manager first, the argument could be made that there are great available solutions.

With the assets the Jags have, there is undoubtedly interest from other coaches as the team is now past the one-week mark since Doug Marrone’s firing. With that being the case, fans are wondering: How long is too long to wait for such an attractive job offer?”
