Brandon Moreno made ‘one of the toughest changes’ of his life in leaving Entram Gym for James Krause. Here’s why.

Former UFC champ Brandon Moreno opens up about his decision to leave Tijuana’s Entram Gym for Glory MMA in Kansas City.

Former UFC flyweight champion [autotag]Brandon Moreno[/autotag] was the face of standout Mexican team Entram Gym, but that chapter is now in the past.

Moreno recently left the Tijuana-based team and switched to Glory MMA & Fitness in Kansas City under the tutelage of coach James Krause. The change came not long after Moreno (19-5-2 MMA, 7-2-2 UFC) lost his UFC title in a closely contested trilogy bout against rival Deiveson Figueiredo this past January at UFC 270.

The decision to leave Entram Gym wasn’t an easy call, but it was necessary for Moreno.

“Of course it was very hard. It was very hard,” Moreno told MMA Junkie in Spanish. “Raul (Arvizu) has been my coach since I started at 16, 17 years old – of course it was hard. But people need to understand and not confuse loyalty.

“I still care about Raul, I still care about my team, and that has nothing to do with loyalty and everything to do with my career, the things I want to keep achieving, and the hunger I have to accomplish my dreams.”

For many years, Moreno was the leading figure at Entram Gym. He fought 26 times professionally while it was his home base, picking up regional titles in LFA and WFF before winning UFC gold.

Moreno’s biggest achievement, as well as the team’s, came in the summer of 2021 when he made history as the first Mexico-born fighter to capture a UFC title. But despite thriving in the UFC and reaching the pinnacle of the sport, Moreno felt a change was needed. And that’s why today, Moreno, who lives in Las Vegas, finds himself fully training stateside.

“I personally felt that I needed a change, something new,” Moreno said. “We often talk about the comfort zone, but what I have learned throughout the years is that the comfort zone can come in through where you least expect it. When you’re least expecting it, you already have the comfort zone on your neck, and you don’t know how to escape it.

“And I’m not talking just about training in a nice place. It doesn’t matter if the place is nice or ugly. It doesn’t matter if you have all the commodities, the comfort zone will find a way, and you need to realize that and learn how to identify it. Something that’s brought me success personally is that I’ve never been afraid to make decisions just as long as they take my career further.

“So I decided to make one of the toughest changes of my life – because all my life I trained at Entram Gym. I still love all my training partners, but it was time for a change.”

Moreno aims to capture the UFC interim flyweight title in a rematch against Kai Kara-France on July 30 at UFC 277 and then look to unify the belt in a fourth bout against Figueiredo. The fight against Kara-France will serve as Coach Krause’s first fight at a championship level in the UFC. Moreno feels he’s made the right choice despite Krause not having the level of notoriety as other bigger teams in the space.

“I decided to train with James Krause, and a lot of people were saying, ‘No, he should go to AKA, he should go to American Top Team,’ and these other big gyms when the news came out, but I don’t know,” Moreno said. “I’ve always been used to having a very personal treatment with my trainers, and I feel like these big gyms have it up to certain degree but not how I prefer it.

“I’ve been watching James Krause a lot, especially in 2020 when he made the most of the pandemic to get in fighters into the UFC and he did very well. I saw the relationship that he had with his fighters. While I was analyzing and calling the fights for UFC Español, I saw how he worked the corners and he worked with his athletes. What won me over is the passion that he puts into it. He’s truly 100 percent with his fighters, and he’s committed. That’s something that I loved. So yeah, I’m already working with him. He’s been great to me.”

Switching teams is a big change for any fighter. Entram Gym proved to be able to take Moreno to UFC championship heights, which makes the decision even tougher for “The Assassin Baby.” Yet, Moreno feels there are better days ahead and a change was due – even if it comes with a degree of risk.

“At the end of the day, nothing secures me the victory – not even hard work,” Moreno said. “Last time I worked like crazy in the camp, it was hell, and even then I didn’t win. Nothing is guaranteed. But the only thing I know is that I’m not scared to move forward and make the decisions needed to look for success in my career.”

Ilia Topuria rips Movsar Evloev after UFC Fight Night 207: ‘You don’t have the balls to call me out’

Ilia Topuria was not impressed with Movsar Evloev’s performance at UFC Fight Night 207.

[autotag]Ilia Topuria[/autotag] was not impressed with [autotag]Movsar Evloev[/autotag]’s performance at UFC Fight Night 207.

Evloev (16-0 MMA, 6-0 UFC) dominated Dan Ige in Saturday’s co-main event at the UFC Apex and proceeded to call out Arnold Allen.

Topuria (12-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) was surprised that Evloev didn’t mention his name or show desire to rebook their bout from UFC 270 in January, which was scrapped after Evloev tested positive for COVID-19.

“@MovsarUFC You fight shamefully! Another decision without any attempt to finish it. On top of that you don’t know how to speak. You don’t have the balls to call me out! Now everyone can really see how you run away! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣shamefully 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️”

Though Topuria’s last fight took place at lightweight when he scored a Performance of the Night knockout of Jai Herbert at UFC Fight Night 204 in London, it appears “El Matador” initially had his eye on the winner of the featherweight bout between Evloev vs. Ige by tweeting this prior to the fight.

“Movsar and Ige both suck. I hope to see something special that could motivate me to fight the winner. #UFCVegas56.”

“@MovsarUFC It was always the same with you guys when it comes to a 1 on 1, have never and will never dare against us. I know people from Ingushetia who are warriors and you are a dumbass who has no balls to confront me alone and you say you are the next champ?🤣🤣🤣”

After Evloev pulled out of their UFC 270 bout, Topuria drew Charles Jourdain instead. However, he didn’t end up competing on the night when weight-cutting issues forced him out of their featherweight bout. Following his win over Herbert, Topuria stated that he’s aiming to fight at both featherweight and lightweight to remain active.

UFC’s Derek Brunson takes umbrage with kids attending Pride Month drag show at gay bar

Derek Brunson said his stance is “nothing against the LGBTQ community” and “more about protecting kids.”

[autotag]Derek Brunson[/autotag] says he has “no problem with gay people,” but the UFC middleweight did have a problem with children attending a drag show at a gay nightclub over the weekend.

The event, held at Mr. Misster in Dallas, was promoted as “Drag The Kids To Pride” and was meant as a celebration of people being themselves to kick off Pride Month. The nightclub encouraged parents to bring their kids for a drag show Saturday morning.

Video online showed drag queens taking dollar bills from kids’ hands while dancing on a makeshift runway beneath a pink neon sign that read “IT’S NOT GONNA LICK ITSELF.” Kids also danced alongside drag queens while their parents looked on.

The event was met with outrage by protesters outside of the nightclub. Brunson, 38, voiced his disapproval for the event in a series of tweets pointing out the various aspects that bothered him. The 10-year UFC veteran called the event “(a) bit much” and “some BS.”

“There’s nothing against the LGBTQ community. It’s more about protecting kids,” Brunson tweeted. “Their minds aren’t mature enough for these types of behavior.”

Brunson’s negative sentiments over this Pride Month event came on the same day that UFC flyweight Jeff Molina spoke out about backlash he received for wearing the UFC’s rainbow-colored Venum kit in celebration of Pride Month after his win at UFC Fight Night 207 in Las Vegas.

You can read Brunson’s tweets below:

This is bit much . Children at a provocative drag show… Can we protect our children more in today’s society . Children don’t need to be at strip clubs , or any provocative show throwing money . SMFH 🤢 *read the message on the board in the background” …

“It’s not gonna lick itself” sign , throwing dollars , twerkin in splits right in front of kids . Search the event to see more. And there’s nothing against the LGBTQ community . It’s more about protecting kids, their minds aren’t mature enough for these types of behaviors 👌🏾

It’ll be the same response from me if pictures of children in a strip club was floating around the internet . FYI I’m not god , I don’t have no problem with gay people . They’re some of the coolest folks . But this is some BS

UFC newcomer Lucas Almeida explains why he feels he belongs with promotion after debut win

Lucas Almeida believes he proved why he belongs in the UFC with his third-round finish of Mike Trizano

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Lucas Almeida[/autotag] showed everyone why he was brought into the UFC after picking up one win following his loss on Dana White’s Contender Series in 2021.

The Brazilian featherweight returned to Jungle Fight, where he was champion of the lightweight division to record a first-round submission victory. A few months later, Almeida (14-1 MMA, 1-0 UFC) was making the walk to the octagon at the UFC Apex to face the winner of The Ultimate Fighter 27, Mike Trizano.

Looking to “win and convince,” Almeida entered his UFC with the goal of finishing his opponent, and did just that in the third round. The first two frames of the bout were hotly contested, but Almeida clipped Trizano (9-3 MMA, 3-3 UFC) with a hard left hook that led to the end of the fight.

“I’m just so happy, I woke up this morning and God spoke to me and said it’s going to be a war,” Almeida told reporters through an interpreter at the post-fight news conference. “I knew it was going to be a war. He also said you’re going to knock him out and that’s what I was able to do.”

[lawrence-related id=2551111,2551126]

Not only did Almeida pick up a win in his UFC debut, but he also took home an extra $50,000 as a part of the Fight of the Night bonus. Aside from a few bumps and bruises sustained during the back-and-forth moments of the fight, Almeida couldn’t be happier with the result considering the path he took to reach the UFC.

“My story is one of overcoming, and that’s exactly what happened,” Almeida said. “I knew I had to overcome, and that overcoming leads to a new Lucas. It’s going to be the story of this new era in my life of a new Lucas.

“I felt that I was not ready for the Contender Series. To go back to Jungle Fight was very important for me. I’ve been a champion there for quite some time, but I was not ready for Contender Series, but I was ready now. I proved why I’m here and why I belong.”

[autotag]Alexander Volkov[/autotag] earned one of the most important wins of his career on Saturday when he defeated Jairzinho Rozenstruik in the UFC Fight Night 207 headliner.

Volkov (35-10 MMA, 9-4 UFC) rebounded from a deflating first-round submission loss to Tom Aspinall in March with a TKO of Jairzinho Rozenstruik (12-4 MMA, 6-4 UFC) just over two minutes into the opening round of the heavyweight main event at UFC Apex in Las Vegas.

“Drago” kept his name among the relevant contenders in the weight class with the victory, and afterward opened up about his strong desire to eventually fight for the championship.

It’ll take some work to get there, though, and Volkov knows as much.

[autotag]Jairzinho Rozenstruik[/autotag] is on the first losing skid of his career after falling short against Alexander Volkov in the UFC Fight Night 207 headliner.

Rozenstruik (12-4 MMA, 6-4 UFC) suffered a first-round TKO loss to Volkov (35-10 MMA, 9-4 UFC) in the heavyweight main event at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. With the result, he’s now dropped three of his past four overall.

It’s now uncharted territory for Rozenstruik in his fighting career after debuting with the UFC just over three years ago as an undefeated fighter.

Jeff Molina disappointed by fan backlash for wearing UFC’s Pride Month shorts: ‘It’s f*cking ridiculous’

Jeff Molina goes off at the criticism he received for wearing UFC’s Pride Month shorts at UFC Fight Night 207.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Jeff Molina[/autotag] is not happy with a portion of the MMA community.

The UFC flyweight prospect fought and won on Saturday night while wearing the rainbow-colored font fight shorts the UFC released in support of Pride Month. Molina (11-2 MMA, 3-0 UFC), who earned a split decision win over Zhalgas Zhumagulov at UFC Fight Night 207, said he received plenty of fan backlash in the lead up to the fight when he announced he’d be wearing the shorts come fight night at the UFC Apex.

The 24-year-old Molina was surprised to receive such a response.

“I was honestly shocked,” Molina told reporters at the post-fight news conference. “So I picked the colors because I thought it looked cool and then also it supports a good cause, you know. But I will support anything of a community that’s been oppressed and ostracized for some time now for something they can’t help. I’ll get behind any of that.

“I just thought in 2022 people will be a little more like open-minded and not pieces of sh*t. But, I guess I was wrong. It’s just crazy to me. Like, people were saying some, like crazy sh*t.”

[lawrence-related id=2550764,2551088]

Not only was Molina surprised by the fan backlash, but also upset about it. He calls for more tolerance in the community.

“Dude, it’s f*cking ridiculous,” Molina said. “Man, who would have thunk that in 2022 people are still, who the f*ck cares, bro? Like honestly, it’s not even about being an ally. I’m not saying I’m not, but it’s like just be a f*cking decent person. Like just be a decent human being.

“Like judging someone and trying to justify with religion and saying all sorts of like just spiteful, hateful sh*t, it’s crazy, it’s crazy to me. It’s mind-boggling. It’s like who cares who someone wants to be with or like their sexual preference like and then trying to justify, the irony of trying to justify it by religion or something that’s supposed to be so accepting.”

Former NFL player, UFC fighter Greg Hardy set for professional boxing debut

After stops in the NFL and UFC, Greg Hardy will test the waters in the ranks of professional boxing.

MMA is on hold, but [autotag]Greg Hardy[/autotag] fights on.

A former NFL and UFC athlete, Hardy will make his professional boxing debut Oct. 8 for Black Sheep Boxing promotions in Delray Beach, Fla. The opponent and number of rounds have not been announced at this time.

Hardy, 33, is a former NFL standout who entered the world of mixed martial arts in 2017. After a 3-0 tenure as an amateur, Hardy turned professional on the inaugural episode of Dana White’s Contender Series, Season 2. He defeated fellow NFL alum Austen Lane via TKO in 57 seconds and earned himself a UFC developmental contract.

Less than two months later, he returned to DWCS and defeated Tebaris Gordon via TKO in 17 seconds. Following one more professional win, under the Xtreme Fight Night banner, Hardy signed a UFC contract. Hardy’s UFC signing was met with criticism due to past accusations of domestic violence.

After some initial success with a 4-2 start to his UFC tenure, Hardy struggled to succeed with an increased level of opposition. The UFC elected not to re-sign Hardy following his TKO loss to Serghei Spivac on March 5. The defeat was his third in a row via first-round TKO. He departed the UFC with a 4-5 promotional record.

Damon Jackson eyes spot on UFC 277 in Dallas, wants veteran fight vs. Darren Elkins

Damon Jackson makes a couple of requests for the UFC following his victory at UFC Fight Night 207.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Damon Jackson[/autotag] has two requests for the UFC brass.

The UFC featherweight is hoping to get a spot on the upcoming UFC 277 event in Dallas on July 30, and also get a fight booking against fellow veteran Darren Elkins. These goals come after Jackson (21-4-1 MMA, 4-2-1 UFC) extended his winning streak to three in a row on Saturday night at UFC Fight Night 27 in Las Vegas.

Jackson defeated newcomer Daniel Argueta by a unanimous decision on the preliminary portion of the card.

The 33-year-old fights out of Dallas and says an opportunity to fight there would be a meaningful moment in his career.

“Dana (White), Sean (Shelby), you guys give me that Dallas card,” Jackson said. “People don’t know this, but I was born and raised about an hour from Dallas, so having that fight there is as close to a hometown fight as I could ever get.

“My entire pro career has been based out of Dallas. So I was 3-0 when I moved to Dallas and I’ve been fighting there since 2013, so it would just be incredible to fight at the American Airlines Center. … It would just be cool as hell. And I told my kids, you know, I would never let them come to the (UFC) Apex, I would never let them go to a different country to watch me fight, but I was like, if I fight in Dallas, I was like, you guys can go. We’ll get a box, and we’ll just sit you guys up in the box and you can see. It would be so cool to fight in Dallas and be in front of my family and friends.”

[lawrence-related id=2551088,2551043]

The placement on UFC 277 is a priority for Jackson. But if he could add the cherry on top and make a second order, Jackson would love to fight Elkins, who last fought at the end of April and has yet to be booked for a return.

“I want Darren Elkins,” Jackson said. “I would love to have that fight. He’s a guy that you call and he’s going to be like, ‘Yeah, I’ll be there, whatever.’ He’s down to fight. I know he would bring the fight for sure and I would love that fight, you know? Whoever they call me to fight, I’ll take it. I’m not going to turn a fight down and I think Sean (Shelby) knows that and I think everyone knows that if you want to call me out, I’m game. Let’s go.”
