Oregon vs UCLA Game Preview

Why Oregon Will Win

Will the Ducks state to play like they’re supposed to?

They haven’t been all that great over the last three weeks, but they managed to win two of the three – getting by in a fight against Cal last Friday – and they’re the final hope for the Pac-12 in the College Football Playoff chase.

For all of the problems and the inconsistencies, the offense has managed to run for over 200 yards in each of the last two games and was decently balanced against the Bears to get by.

For all of the good things UCLA has done to get to five wins, the pass defense is last in the Pac-12 allowing 290 yards per game. Oregon QB Anthony Brown has been up-and-down and much maligned, but he’s coming off a 244-yard day hitting 71% of his passes against Cal.

Most importantly for this, he’s not going to make big mistakes – he has just one pick on the year.

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why UCLA Will Win

UCLA’s running game continues to be fantastic.

The Oregon run defense might be a major strength, but few teams were able to keep pounding away and keep pushing. Arizona was able to give it a shot and ran for over 200 yards, and Ohio State and Cal averaged over four yards per carry, and now UCLA’s running game has to come in with an attitude.

Zach Charbonnet has rushed for over 100 yards in five of the last seven games and is coming off a season-high 131-yard day against Washington.

Even if he’s not tearing off big dashes, coming up with a few yards on first and second downs is enough  – the Oregon defense is lousy on third downs.

This isn’t your normal Chip Kelly offense that goes 1000 miles per hour. It will control the clock for stretches, and in this, controlling the game and making Oregon press matters.

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

It’s not exactly going to look like a team that should get to the College Football Playoff and do some damage, but Oregon will push through in the second half after a fun back-and-forth fight in the first.

It’ll look like this is the game the Ducks were waiting for. The defense will show off the talent and athleticism to hold up against the run as the game goes on, and in a positive momentum sort of way, the offense will feed off of it.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

UCLA vs Washington Game Preview

Why UCLA Will Win

Washington just can’t get this season going.

It’s got enough talent to be a whole lot better than 2-3, but it can’t get the running game consistently going, the passing attack didn’t do anything against Oregon State, and the defense hasn’t been able to make up for the problems on the other side.

This is when UCLA needs to crank up the running game.

The Bruins couldn’t run against Fresno State, but they’ve hit 200 yards on the ground against everyone else. They’re 4-0 when running for over 200 and 0-2 when getting to 200 or under. Washington’s run D really is good, but Michigan was able to tear off 343 yards and Oregon State came up wit 242.

The Bruins should be a little more balanced than the Wolverines and Beavers were, but the ground attack should work.

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Washington Will Win

Washington has a good enough secondary to potentially make the Bruins one-dimensional.

UCLA’s perfect world is to get to 200 yards both rushing and passing as it keeps the Dawg defense on its heels. For all of the problems, though, Washington has helped three of the last four teams – including Michigan and Oregon State – to under 50% completion rate. It gave up two touchdown passes to Cal’s Chase Garbers, and that’s it – the secondary locked down against everyone else and has four picks in the last three games.

To keep on this, Washington really is better than it has shown so far. The offense needs to start blasting away a bit to control the game and the clock a bit better, and if it can get up early and make the Bruins throw, again, that goes to the team’s strength.

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Is this when Washington makes the pivot and gets its season going?

It’s had two weeks off to rest up after the tough loss to Oregon State, and UCLA has to go on the road for the third time in four weeks. At home, it’ll put up enough of a fight on both sides of the ball to keep this close late, but it’ll have to hold on for dear life as the UCLA offense has a few late chances to pull the game out of the fire.

The Washington defense will come up with the stops needed to get the win it has to have.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

UCLA vs Arizona Game Preview

Why UCLA Will Win

Arizona doesn’t have enough of an offense to keep up.

It played well for a while in the misleading 41-19 loss to Oregon – coming up with over 200 yards rushing and 200 passing – but late turnovers made it ugly.

Overall, though, the running game hasn’t been able to get going, third down conversions are rare, and there’s not enough help from the other side to make a difference.

Basically, Arizona’s lines aren’t good enough yet.

There isn’t nearly enough of a pass rush to get to Dorian Thompson-Robinson and the Bruins downfield passing game that should be able to come up with yards in chunks.

In a perfect world, though, the Bruins take advantage up front and start pounding away from the first drive.

However …

Week 6 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Arizona Will Win

UCLA is 3-0 on the year when it runs for over 200 yards, and it’s 0-2 when it doesn’t. Arizona allowed 254 yards on the ground to San Diego State,  and no one else – not BYU, not Oregon – has been able to get past the 200-yard mark.

The top guys aren’t in place quite yet for new Arizona head coach Jedd Fisch, but he made a major statement from the start that his program would play defense, and it’s happening.

The overall numbers aren’t amazing, but considering Arizona went on an impressive run of allowing over 400 yards in 18 of 19 games before the 2021 season – and 22 of 25 going back through 2018 – only allowing one 400-yard day in the first four games is a big step forward.

And now the Wildcat defense has had two weeks off to rest up.

Week 6 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

UCLA will pick it back up again after failing to keep up in the second half against Arizona State.

It’s just the second away game so far – beating Stanford in the first one – with a balanced attack ready to be enough to overcome a strong first quarter start by Arizona.

The Cats won’t be able to keep up.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Arizona State vs UCLA Game Preview

Why Arizona State Will Win

The talent is there to come up with a big offensive performance against a UCLA D that’s good, but will give up yards.

The Sun Devils overcame the loss at BYU with a solid 35-13 at Colorado, with Jayden Daniels and the passing game taking over and the D dominating the struggling Buff attack.

ASU is moving the chains, the secondary has been strong, and the lines are good enough to hold up against the suddenly physical Bruins. Able to move the chains well and control the clock – helped by that D that gets off the field – the Sun Devils should dictate the tempo against a team that loves to make teams play its way.

However …

Week 5 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why UCLA Will Win

Arizona State beat Southern Utah, UNLV, and Colorado. None of those three have an offense, and the team failed the test at BYU.

UCLA has been battle tested. It beat LSU. It beat Stanford. It was a stop away from getting by a strong Fresno State. ASU has yet to prove it can push past adversity.

It starts with the infrastructure. The offensive line has been great at getting the ground game going and is good enough in pass protection. The biggest difference from a few years ago is the defensive front that’s been a rock against the run – it leads the Pac-12 allowing just 64 yards per game.

The Bruins will give up passing yards, but for the most part they’ve been able to hold up. Fresno State’s Jake Haener was the only one able to crack the code in the clutch, but …

Week 5 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Jayden Daniels is good enough to pull this off if he gets into a groove.

The Arizona State passing game should be able to make this a fight, but UCLA showed against Stanford that it got back on track with a strong game at Stanford.

It’ll be a fun late night game with both offense trading shots, but the ASU running game will be held to a stop, UCLA will be balanced, and penalties will play a huge role.

The Sun Devils are getting crushed by flags – close to 11 per game. Those will matter.

UCLA vs Stanford Game Preview

Why UCLA Will Win

Stanford’s defense isn’t doing enough to get into the backfield.

It didn’t have to do too much to get by Vanderbilt, but overall it’s an issue that the pass rush isn’t there and there’s not enough disruption to matter. It also doesn’t help for a run defense that’s giving up yards in chunks.

The Bruins might be the best in the Pac-12 at generating a pass rush, but Vanderbilt ran for 247 yards last week and averaged 5.6 yards per carry. That came a week after USC averaged 5.6 yards per run, and that came a week after Kansas State rolled for 6.5 yards per carry with three scores.

UCLA RB Zach Charbonnet is averaging 10.5 yards per carry with six scores. He and Brittain Brown will take over for big, big yards.

Week 4 College Football Expert Picks

Why Stanford Will Win

So what went wrong? How did UCLA go from being America’s darling after beating LSU to being totally unable to lock down late in the loss to Fresno State?

The pass defense is a problem.

It got hit hard by LSU, and two weeks later it was Jake Haener who went off, throwing for 455 yards including the amazing game-winning comeback drive in the final moments.

Stanford’s offense struggled in the opener against Kansas State, and then Tanner McKee took over the full-time quarterbacking gig. Now on the year he has hit 71% of his throws averaging over eight yards per pass with five scores and no picks.

He’s going to bomb away against the Bruins as long as the line can give him the time.

Week 4 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

So what do you like better, the Stanford passing game or the UCLA ground attack?

UCLA’s defense might have a whole slew of flaws, but credit Haener and Fresno State for getting the win last week with brilliant play – the Bruins should be far stronger in this.

The offense still worked last week, and it’ll do just enough on the ground to overcome a massive day from McKee and the Cardinal passing game.

It’ll be fun.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

UCLA (2-0) vs Fresno State (2-1) Game Preview

Why Fresno State Will Win

The offense is working.

After a rough first season under head coach Kalen DeBoer, the passing game has been fantastic, the defense has been vastly improved, and the experience is coming through.

Granted, beating UConn and Cal Poly is nothing special, but the Bulldogs did a better job against Oregon than Ohio State did.

Jake Haener has been terrific – hitting 74% of his throws with eight touchdown passes and no picks – playing like the star recruit he once was for Washington, but it’s the other side that’s been the difference.

Fresno State is doing a wonderful job of getting into the backfield, the run D held Oregon to 186 yards – and 358 yards of total offense – and now it gets a UCLA team that might be rested, but could’ve lost a bit of momentum after a fantastic start to the season.

And maybe the Bruin focus is a wee bit on the Pac-12 opener at Stanford next week.

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why UCLA Will Win

What more could you possibly ask for out of a start?

In came a solid Mountain West team to kick things off, and the Bruins pounded through Hawaii 44-10. Even better was the performance in the national spotlight win over LSU.

UCLA has been tough, efficient, and nasty on the lines, allowing just 75 rushing yards in the first two games while pounding away with a good enough ground attack to take control so far.

There’s nothing finesse about this team in the wonderful blue uniforms in the Chip Kelly offense. However …

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

For all of the good things UCLA is doing, the pass protection has been a bit lacking. Fresno State has to keep the pressure on Dorian Thompson-Robinson, and it has to keep pressing with a passing game that’s going to be fearless and relentless.

The rest will help the Bruins, and they’re not going to let up after their big start. It’s going to take a half to get everything rolling, though.

Fresno State will look strong in the loss, with a few chances late to make the Bruins fight to get out alive.
