UCLA has been missing QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson, and it’s still playing well with the running game working as well as it has in the Chip Kelly era, and for the first time in years, the line play overall has been fantastic.

The offensive front isn’t allowing much happening in the backfield, the ground game is rolling like it did in the middle of last year – and then died – and the defensive front has been fantastic.

The Bruins lead the Pac-12 in tackles for loss, they tightened up in a big way against the run after the opener against Colorado, and now they get an Arizona State team that’s still going to be working out the kinks.

Why Arizona State Will Win

It was only one game, but the Arizona State running game was dominant against USC.

QB Jayden Daniels took off for 111 yards, freshman Chip Trayanum powered for 84 yards and two touchdowns, and the team finished with 258 yards with big run after big run.

Yeah, the team hasn’t been able to play for a while, but it’s going to be really, really ready to go hit someone. There won’t be anything tricky here – use the O line, power away, ask Daniels to hit the midrange throws, and wait for the UCLA mistakes to come.

For all of the good things the Bruins are doing, last week against Arizona was the first game without a turnover. They lost both games when they turned it over four times, and won the two games when they didn’t. ASU forced four takeaways in the loss to USC.

What’s Going To Happen

Arizona State is going to be solid even after all the time off. It’ll be tough on the ground, and the defense will be swarming with fresh legs as it goes for takeaway after takeaway.

UCLA is 2-0 at home, 0-2 on the road, and it’ll give the ball away enough to give ASU the chances needed to overcome its own mistakes. The Sun Devils have had to sit on that collapse against USC for a month, and it’s going to play like it’s ready to make up for it.

Why Arizona Will Win

Arizona might not have a win, and it’s not quite as explosive and as productive as everyone might like, but it went up against two of the three best teams in the Pac-12 – USC and Washington, with Oregon being the third – and it more than held its own.

The passing game has been efficient, and the defense has held up relatively well considering this was supposed to be a total overhaul year and it had to deal with the Trojan passing game and the Husky power attack.

And now the Wildcats might catch a break against a UCLA team that didn’t have starting QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson last week against Oregon, and now might be missing him along with several other players going through the contact tracing protocols.

Why UCLA Will Win

Yeah, all things considered, Arizona hasn’t been all that bad. Most teams in the league would be 0-2 against USC and UW. However, the Wildcat offensive line isn’t playing all that well, there isn’t enough of a running game to worry about, and the O isn’t moving the chains well enough to maintain any sort of consistent control.

Despite missing DTR and a several other parts, the Bruins pushes Oregon hard in a. 38-35 loss with the running game taking over.

The offensive system is finally starting to work, mostly because the offensive line is finally stronger than it has been in a several years. Arizona won’t be dealing with the power ground game like the Washington offensive front brought last week – this will be more up-tempo speed. That, and …

A terrific pass rush should be enough to overcome the other UCLA issues and personnel concerns.

The Bruins might only be 1-2, but the lines are playing well enough, the offense will be more explosive, and despite all the problems just getting this going, they’ll be 2-0 at home this season.

Why UCLA Will Win

Dorian Thompson-Robinson – after just two games – is playing really, really well.

He’s not accurate enough, but he’s hitting enough downfield throws to make up for it with seven touchdown passes in the two games and an interception in each. Throw in his running ability, and UCLA has a guy to work the offense around.

It starts with an improved offensive line. It has taken forever, but the Bruins finally have a front five that’s not awful in pass protection, and the defensive line is doing a great job of getting into the backfield.

Why Oregon Will Win

It might not be all that smooth, and there are way too many turnovers and not enough big plays behind the line, but the Ducks are in a transition period and they’re still 2-0 without that much of a problem.

Tyler Shough isn’t Justin Herbert, but he’s hitting 68% of his passes, he’s running fine, and he’s connecting on just about every third down play. It’s only two games, but Oregon leads the nation in third down conversions, getting the job done 73% of the time.

Once the pass rush starts to kick in, and once the defense starts to take the ball away, look out.

Put it this way – Oregon is 2-0 with two relatively easy wins despite being -5 in turnover margin.

What’s Going To Happen

UCLA isn’t just the pushover it has been over the last few years, and the lines are going to hold up well enough to stay in the game, but Oregon has too much offense and too much balance to not take control as the game goes on.

If it’s possible to lose and come away looking good, UCLA will do it.

Why Cal Will Win

It’s going to take a while before Cal gets its legs, but the secondary will be one of the team’s biggest strengths. UCLA’s running game was good in the opener, but it’s going to want to move quickly with the passing game.

The defensive backs will be the one area the Cal coaching staff can rely on.

Offensively, Cal has to control the clock. This might not be a grinding attack, but Colorado had the ball for almost 40 minutes las week against the Bruins. Trying to keep things as simple as possible, Cal has a better shot of pounding out the running game against the UCLA D than the other way around.

The Bruin passing game worked right away.

It might have been a rough outing in the 48-42 loss to the Buffs, but Dorian Thompson-Robinson was outstanding – he took off for 109 yards and threw for 404 yards and three touchdowns – and there were a whole lot of big plays and shots down the field.

This is going to be another tough Cal D, but it has to replace a whole slew of parts up front, tacking-machine Evan Weaver is gone from the linebacking corps, and it might take a little bit for the offensive side to get going.

UCLA has a game under its belt. Cal has had no time to prepare for the Bruins, and it has to be the one to make the trip in this very, very odd game.

UCLA was supposed to play Utah, Cal was supposed to play Arizona State, so let’s just get out there and go on a Sunday morning.

Anyone, anywhere, anytime.

UCLA might have the explosion and the offensive experience to get going right away and be a whole lot shaper than Cal, but Bear QB Chase Garbers will be strong, the defense will be great, and this will turn into a much more even performance than you might think.

Why Utah Will Win

The Utah offensive line will get to eat.

It’s the opener for the Utes after not being able to go last week, and they’re going keep it simple.

Use the amazing, veteran offensive line, blast away on a UCLA defensive front that gave up 264 yards and five scores in the 48-42 loss to Colorado, assume a rotation of running backs will get to pound away, and expect that the changes on defense won’t be that big a deal.

It’s Utah. The defense is going to be very big up front, very active in the linebacking corps, and as long as the group can keep UCLA QB. Dorian Thompson-Robinson from taking off, it’ll be doing its job.

Colorado didn’t generate any pressure. That’s not going to be a problem for the Utes.
