Positive COVID-19 test results force No. 20 Allen to cancel game against Cedar Hill

Allen High School, ranked 20th in the USA Today Super 25, has canceled its game against Cedar Hill because of positive COVID-19 test results.

Allen High School (Texas), ranked No. 20 in USA Today’s Super 25, has canceled its Friday night matchup with Cedar Hill because of positive COVID-19 results in its program.

According to Greg Riddle of the Dallas Morning News, two student-athletes from Allen tested positive for COVID-19 in the last two days, prompting the cancelation. As of now, the rest of Allen’s games will be played as originally scheduled. Allen is set to host Tyler Legacy next week.

With Allen and Cedar Hill’s postponement 23 games in the Dallas-Fort Worth area this week have been canceled or postponed, most for COVID-19 reasons.

Allen is the largest high school in Texas with an enrollment of 6,959 students, per the UIL’s realignment in February. Per Allen Independent School District policy, any student with a lab-confirmed positive COVID-19 test is required to remain off campus and follow CDC guidelines before returning to school. District officials have started contact tracing to determine if any students were in close contact with the students who tested positive for COVID-19.

Allen and Cedar Hill have combined to win eight state championships in football. According to Dave Campbell’s Texas Football, Allen, who is fresh off a statement victory over Atascocita last week, is ranked fifth in the state in Class 6A. Cedar Hill (1-0) is No. 12.

No. 2 Duncanville dominates in season opener without 2019 National Coach of the Year Reginald Samples

Duncanville dominated its season opener despite not having 2019 USA Today national coach of the year Reginald Samples because of suspension.

Duncanville High School (Texas), ranked No. 2 in USA Today’s Super 25, dominated in its season opener on Friday night despite missing a key figure on the sideline.

2019 USA Today national coach of the year Reginald Samples did not coach in the Panthers’ 41-3 win over South Oak Cliff because of a one-game suspension instituted by the University Interscholastic League. According to Greg Riddle of the Dallas Morning News, the UIL’s state executive committee found Duncanville violated the UIL rule regarding the employment of coaches by using a coach on staff that was not a full-time district employee. Assistant head coach and defensive line coach Ramel Borner ran the show in place of Samples.

Under Samples’ guidance, Duncanville has reached consecutive Class 6A Division I championship games and has amassed a 29-2 record the last two seasons (14-1 in 2018, 15-1 in 2019). The Panthers were originally scheduled to open their 2020 season against Fort Worth Nolan last week, but the game was canceled because a Nolan football player tested positive for COVID-19.

Samples will be back on the sideline next week when Duncanville hosts No. 1 IMG Academy in Arlington on Saturday, Oct. 10 after it confirmed it still plans to travel to Texas for the game amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Plenty of talent will be on the field when the two teams take the field next weekend, as IMG Academy features three of the top 64 recruits in the class of 2021. Duncanville offensive lineman is ranked 43rd in the class of 2021 according to 247Sports.

Five-star 2022 WR Caleb Burton suffers season-ending knee injury

Five-star 2022 wide receiver Caleb Burton is out for the year with a knee injury.

Caleb Burton, the No. 1 wide receiver in the class of 2022 according to 247Sports, is out for the remainder of his junior year after suffering a knee injury.

On Wednesday, Burton confirmed via Twitter that he sustained a season-ending knee injury in Del Valle (Texas) high school’s season-opening 28-13 win over McNeil high school last weekend.

“Due to an injury in my first junior game of the season, I will be out for the remainder of the year,” Burton said. “I am looking forward to coming back stronger and better.”

Burton has been a star on the high school scene since arriving at Del Valle as a freshman, catching 32 passes for 609 yards and six touchdowns on 19 yards per reception. As a sophomore, he hauled in 51 passes for 882 yards and 12 touchdowns on 17.3 yards per reception, earning first-team all-district in Texas District 24-6A both years.

247Sports’ rankings have Burton as the No. 8 overall recruit in the class of 2022, No. 1 among wide receiver and the No. 2 prospect in Texas. With almost 40 reported offers from the likes of Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Penn State, Texas, Texas A&M and USC, he is one of the most coveted recruits in his class.

“Good frame potential for typical outside receiver prospect,” 247Sports’ Gabe Brooks said in Burton’s scouting report. “Flashes impressive timing and high-pointing ability on contested throws. Meets the ball at the apex. Adjusts well with encouraging body control. Gets off the line quickly and on top of corners in a hurry. Shows impressive burst and acceleration. Dangerous in catch-and-run situations.

“Generally a good hands catcher. Good football pedigree. Adequate to above-average on-field long speed but can get faster at the top end. Among the top prospects in Texas for the 2022 class. Possesses all-conference potential with long-term NFL Draft ceiling.”
