New NCAA Transfer Propose Rule Is a Potential Game Changer

The NCAA has proposed a new transfer rule that could be absolute game changer for the landscape of college athletics going forward.

The transfer portal all the rage into today’s college athletics, not just for football but huge in basketball as well. With a proposed rule change by the NCAA, the transfer portal might become an even bigger tool for coaches who are looking to make an impact on their rosters going forward.

Prior to the rule, it required athletes to sit out an entire year after transferring to be able to play for their new university without a waiver. This would be a deterrent for athletes to put in for a transfer without having to graduate to bypass the eligibility rule. The new rule would waive the one-year period where athletes would be deemed ineligible to play immediately.

For athletes, it can really level the playing field in college athletics. Too often coaches secure a players commitment or even sign their letter of intent to play for a particular coach or university before the coach leaves for another job. Much like the Mel Tucker situation at Colorado and Michigan State University. Not to mention the fact that Mike Dantonio resigned after finalizing his 2020 recruiting class.

If a coach can leave any program for another opportunity elsewhere, the athletes who placed their collegiate careers should be afforded the same opportunity. This would also be without having to go through an entire waiver process that could take a significant amount of time to receive their clearance to pursue another school to finish their playing days at the college level.

The committee isn’t scheduled to meet until April but should this new rule pass, look for the landscape of college athletics to change.

Oklahoma wins opening series against Virginia in rubber match

OU got things off on the right track to start the season. The Sooners bounced back after losing Friday night to down Virginia in the series.

Oklahoma got things off on the right track to start the 2020 season.

The Sooners, after losing the season-opening game 6-0 Friday night, fought back on Saturday to win both games of a double-header to win the opening series against Virginia.

After being shutout in game one, the Oklahoma lineup started off hot on Saturday. Jordan Vujovich, in his first start of 2020, lead off the first game with a double and ended up scoring. The Sooners jumped out to a 6-0 lead by the fifth-inning and got some insurance in the ninth to win 7-2.

Southpaw Levi Prater went 4.1 innings pitched in his first start of 2020, gave up two earned runs and had five strikeouts. Zack Matthews got the win with Ledgend Smith and Jason Ruffcorn getting an inning of work.

San Jacinto College transfer Dane Acker got his highly anticipated start out of the way in game two. The junior right-hander went five innings, struck out six Virginia hitters and surrendered only one run and one hit.

After a two-out walk by the Cavaliers reliever in the top of the seventh, Tyler Hardman delivered the first Oklahoma home run of the 2020 season to give the Sooners a 3-1 lead. Hardman also delivered up a two-RBI single in the top of the ninth-inning to push the Sooners lead to four.

Wyatt Olds came on in relief to strike out six hitters in three innings of scoreless work, striking out six batters while walking three and allowing two hits. Jason Ruffcorn closed the door in the bottom of the ninth after inheriting two of Olds’ baserunners. It was Ruffcorn’s second appearance of the day.

Oklahoma will be back in action on Tuesday when the Sooners welcome in Texas Southern for a two-game, mid-week series at home.

First pitch on Tuesday is slated for 3 p.m. CT.

Oklahoma to be battle-tested, ready for conference play in March

No more of the unknown. It at least appears that way for Oklahoma baseball 2020. The Sooners are set to play a tough slate this season.

No more of the unknown.

It at least appears that way for Oklahoma baseball 2020.

A year ago, the Sooners played one team in non-conference play (Dallas Baptist) that made the NCAA Tournament, and that was for a single mid-week game. Oklahoma played six games in non-conference play against teams who made the NCAA Tournament in 2018, but those, too, all came in mid-week games against small school teams who had to win their conference to make the tournament.

That idea has since passed, and the Sooners will be battle tested for conference play and beyond this season.

Oklahoma is set to start the year with a three-game series against a perennial NCAA Tournament team up until the last two years in Virginia. Then, two weeks later, the Sooners will get to go up against college baseball powers Arkansas and LSU in the Shriners Classic in Houston. Oklahoma will play host to another perennial NCAA Tournament team in San Diego State for a three-game series and also have mid-week contests against Dallas Baptist and Arkansas prior to conference play starting.

Head coach Skip Johnson and his No. 24 ranked team are set to play 10 top-25 matchups based off the preseason D1Baseball.com top-25 when you include Oklahoma State and Texas Tech.

There will be no question about who this Oklahoma baseball team will be by the end of the season.

Or even by the time the Big 12 conference opening series against Texas in March.

The Sooners and Virginia will kick off the 2020 college baseball season Friday night at 6 p.m. CT in Pensacola, Florida.

Oklahoma’s starting rotation, projected lineup for opening series against Virginia

The Sooners have traveled to the Sunshine State to start the 2020 season. Here is the starting rotation and projected lineup for the series.

The Sooners have traveled to the Sunshine State to start the 2020 season.

There, head coach Skip Johnson and the Oklahoma baseball team will throw the first pitch of their new season against Virginia and long tenured head coach Brian O’Conner.

Little surprise came when Johnson announced at the Sooners local media day that returning starters Cade Cavalli and Levi Prater would be the Friday and Saturday starters for the opening series against the Cavaliers. The final piece to Oklahoma’s starting rotation was announced on Thursday as San Jacinto College transfer Dane Acker will get the ball on Sunday.

Acker was selected in the 23rd Round of the 2019 MLB Draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks. That came after he put up a 10-0 record as a starter for San Jacinto College with a 2.36 ERA and striking out 97 batters in 76.1 inning. Acker transferred to San Jacinto College after his freshman season at Rice.

Johnson told Oklahoma play-by-play announcer Toby Rowland Friday morning who his probable starters would be.

That lineup consists of six starters from the final game of the 2019 season, reinserting now sophomore Diego Muniz to the starting lineup, giving Justin Mitchell or Brady Lindsly a designated hitting job when they are not catching and one newcomer in freshman Peyton Graham.

Oklahoma will take on Virginia Friday night in Pensacola, Florida. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. CT.

Oklahoma’s Cade Cavalli named to Golden Spikes Award preseason watch list

Oklahoma’s ace received some more preseason recognition on the eve of the first pitch of the 2020 season.

Oklahoma’s ace received some more preseason recognition on the eve of the first pitch of the 2020 season.

Junior right-hander Cade Cavalli has already had plenty of buzz heading into the season, but he was named a member of the Golden Spikes Award preseason watch list on Thursday for the top amateur baseball player in the country for the 2020 season.

No Oklahoma player has ever won the Golden Spikes Award.

Cavalli spent the summer of 2019 with USA Baseball’s Collegiate National Team. He made one appearance, throwing 2.2 innings and giving up three hits, two walks, one earned run while striking out one.

This came on the heels of a stellar sophomore campaign. Cavalli was Oklahoma’s Friday night starter, getting 12 starts and throwing 60.1 innings. The junior finished 5-3 with a 3.28 ERA and struck out 59 batters.

Skip Johnson will give the ball to Cavalli for the first time in the 2020 season on Friday. Oklahoma will take on Virginia in Pensacola, Florida, at 6 p.m. CT.

Texas lands in final AP Top 25 poll

After an underwhelming 2019 season, the Texas Longhorns still landed in the final Associated Press Top 25 poll.

After an underwhelming 2019 season with five losses, the Texas Longhorns still managed to secure a spot in the final Associated Press Top 25 poll.

Although Texas was the third-best team in the Big 12, their performance against No. 11 Utah in the Alamo Bowl was enough to re-enter into the final standings at No. 25 overall.

Only two other Big 12 teams were listed, Oklahoma at No. 7 while Baylor grabbed the No. 13 spot. Former rival Texas A&M just missed the final rankings, falling below the Longhorns in what would be the No. 26 spot.

Texas was the only five-loss team in the season-ending poll.

Moment #2 from 2019

Two Years is Two Too Many

Were still counting down the five most memorable moments of the Falcon’s 2019 football season. In case you missed our first three installments of this five part series, check them out here  Part 1Part 2 and Part 3 .

COMING IN AT #2

November 2, 2019 Air Force 17 vs. Army 13

For any leg of the Military Academies Battle for the Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy, it can be expected to be hotly contested, regardless of team records. Coming into their 2019 clash with Army, Air Force had already lost to Navy earlier in the year, making the teams number one goal each season, a trip to the White House, already out of reach.

Army consequently was still searching for their footing when they traveled to Colorado Springs. They were one loss away from being eliminated from Bowl Consideration, but the ultimate prize was still within reach for Cadets from West Point; The Commander-In-Chief’s trophy. Army finishes the season against Navy, therefore a win at Air Force not only would have kept their Bowl aspirations alive, but a third consecutive trip to meet the President.

When you lay all that was at stake for Army out there, you could easily be fooled into attributing the motivation factor to their sideline. To borrow a phrase from Lee Corso “not so fast, my friend”. The Falcons had endured two consecutive losses to the Black Knights, and the Army team and fan base has been spewing reminders of it for the full 24 months.

Its almost as if the Army contingent had forgotten that Air Force had won 18 of their 20 meetings prior. Perhaps that’s more palatable than a friendly reminder of how Air Force has also captured the CIC Trophy 18 times, as compared to their eight. But who’s counting?

The beauty of this rivalry is that none of the aforementioned matters when Military Academies play. These are bitter rivalry games, and the play on the field reflects that. But there is something beautiful about these games, and as a football fan you have to appreciate that individuals that are ready and willing to die for one another can flip a switch to punish one another for a full four quarters, without batting an eye.

The 2019 meeting between Army and Air Force was certainly of that bruising variety, which it was apparent that neither team would leave an ounce of breath on the field.

Coming into the game, you would have thought that a slight offensive edge belonged to Air Force because of D.J. Hammond’s ability to throw the ball. That was not the case at all this day, as Hammond’s most critical contributions came in his decision making, and modest yet grueling rush yards, which the Falcon’s needed every one of.

Jabari Laws on the other hand came out slinging and had a career day throwing the ball for over 200 yards. So while the Falcon defense kept the Army run game well below its average, the passing game became the real wild card.

In the end, multiple fourth down stops by the Air Force defense were the difference. A theme as the season went on, as we saw. This was a showing of fortitude by both teams, but in the end, the Falcons did what they have done more often than not against Army; Air Force Sang Second.

Next Time We Reveal Air Force’s Top Moment from 2019!
