Georgia baseball downs Georgia Tech in series opener

Georgia’s Webb oversaw the final ten outs and earned his first save of the season.

Scott Stricklin’s fourth-ranked Georgia Bulldogs swatted the No. 17 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in the first of three games the rivals will play this season.

After the Jackets put the first run on the board in the top of the fourth inning, the Dawgs answered in the bottom half of the inning with a five-run outburst.

Tech chipped away at their most hated rivals’ lead, scoring three runs and blanking the home team in the fifth and sixth innings.

Still maintaining a one-run lead in the bottom of the seventh, pinch hitter Patrick Sullivan sent Cole Tate home from second base, giving the Bulldogs an insurance run that would prove to be vital.

The Yellow Jackets loaded the bases down two runs in the bottom of the ninth and scored one with a sacrifice fly. Junior reliever Ryan Webb, despite the immense pressure of the game’s ending, struck out similarly-named Jackson Webb (both billed from Roswell, strangely enough) to end the game.

Georgia’s Webb oversaw the final ten outs and earned his first save of the season.

Webb told reporters after the game:

“I just love being in when the game is on the line and this just means more to me because its Tech. I have a lot of friends on that team and last year I kind of laid an egg against them at Suntrust.”

Bulldawg Illustrated posted Webb’s post-game interview.

As part of a neutral series between in-state foes, the three-game stand features one game at Georgia’s Foley Field, another at Tech’s stadium at 255 Ferst Drive in Atlanta, and a third contest at Coolray Field, the home of Atlanta Braves AAA affiliate Gwinnett Stripers.

With Wyatt Olds and timely hitting, Oklahoma sends loud message with 6-3 win over Arkansas

Oklahoma sends a loud message to college baseball by beating No. 6/9 ranked Arkansas in Shriners College Classic

HOUSTON — With runners on second and third, one out, Arkansas had a stranglehold on all the momentum.

Oklahoma’s Wyatt Olds relieved Cade Cavalli in the sixth inning, allowing a one-out single and double after the Razorbacks hit back-to-back home runs to knock Cavalli out of the game and take a 3-2 lead. He faced Arkansas with a chance for the Razorbacks to open up more than a one-run lead and the fans Woo-Pig-Sooie-ing all the way into the night.

First batter … strikeout.

Second batter … strikeout.

“That was huge,” said head coach Skip Johnson after the game. “It was a momentum changer. You talk about changing momentum and trying to keep it in our dugout—that’s what it was. When he punched those two guys out, it was huge.”

Brady Lindsly would go on to tie the game in the very next frame with a solo shot to left. Then Oklahoma (7-2) would go on to send a loud message to college baseball by beating No. 6/9 ranked Arkansas (7-1) 6-3.

“They were really good in the moment,” Johnson said about his team against Arkansas. “We situational hit really well early in the game. That’s what you have to do against a good team. Get two runs on the board, kind of get your pitch relaxed a little bit and make pitches. Then they took the lead and we fought back, which was really, really special. Got some big hits in some big moments.”

Timely hitting it was as one of Oklahoma’s most struggling hitters delivered one of the biggest blows of the game.

Brandon Zaragoza is off to an extremely rough start to the 2020 season. Zaragoza came into Friday’s game 3-for-29 on the year—that’s good for a .103 batting average.

In the bottom of the seventh, after a throwing error put Trent Brown on second and an infield mishap on a sacrifice bunt put runners on the corners with no outs, his name was called upon.

Zaragoza, with the same calm, straight-faced demeanor, stepped in.

He got behind 1-2 in the count, then Zaragoza punched a two-strike single through the left side to score Trent Brown and Oklahoma took a 4-3 lead in the seventh inning.

“Well it was huge,” Johnson said. “The thing is he goes out there everyday and fights at it.

“You know what I mean? He works just as hard as everybody else. It’s not what you call a ‘slump’. What it is is a real fight everyday to get the momentum back and get your presence—you are fighting confidence, and he never lost confidence all the way through that deal and that one was big.”

Coming off a weekend where the Sooners went 5-for-42 at the plate with runners in scoring position, Oklahoma started this one going 3-for-10.

Cavalli was dominant through four innings before a 30-pitch, four-hit fifth inning spoiled his day. He finished with five innings pitched, allowing six hits, three runs and struck out 11 of the 21 batters he faced.

Olds got the win, throwing three innings and some change, only allowing four hits, no runs, walked one and struck out six. Jason Ruffcorn moves to 4-for-4 on save attempts on the year after relieving Olds in the ninth.

Tanner Tredaway, Tyler Hardman and Justin Mitchell had two hits each. Tredaway and Mitchell included doubles on their day.

Oklahoma returns to action on Saturday in the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic at 11 a.m. CT against Missouri.

Tanner Tredaway wins Big 12 Baseball Player of the Week

Oklahoma’s center fielder was on an absolute tear last week. Tanner Tredaway was named the Big 12’s Player of the Week.

Oklahoma’s center fielder was on an absolute tear last week.

Tanner Tredaway started red hot and finished the same as the Sooners went 5-1 against Texas Southern in a two-game, mid-week series and Illinois State in a four-game series on the weekend.

The junior went .500 (12-for-24) in the six games with a staggering 1.125 slugging percentage. He had three triples, two home runs, a handful of doubles and scored seven times.

Tredaway has hit at the top of the lineup and in the middle of the lineup through the first two weeks of action. He leads Oklahoma players with five or more starts in batting average, slugging percentage and runs scored.

The Sooners are going to need Tredaway to not cool off as they have their first big test of the season this weekend in Houston.

Oklahoma will take on No. 7/9 Arkansas on Friday, Missouri on Saturday and No. 11/14 LSU on Sunday at the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic. The games will be played at Minute Maid Park, the home of the Houston Astros.

Oklahoma baseball wins three against Illinois State in four-game series

The Oklahoma baseball team continued its winning ways in the second weekend of play. The Sooners took three of four from Illinois State.

NORMAN, Okla. — The No. 16/23 ranked Oklahoma baseball team continued its winning ways in the second weekend of play.

The Sooners hosted Missouri Valley Conference member Illinois State for a four-game series. The two played doubleheaders on Friday and Saturday to get the four-game set complete. Oklahoma came out victorious, winning three, despite the margin being very thin.

Head coach Skip Johnson got the weekend started with his deep pitching staff. Oklahoma notched two wins while only allowing nine hits and two runs in the doubleheader on Friday.

Ace Cade Cavalli provided seven innings in his first home start in game one, allowing six hits, a walk, a run and struck out nine. Wyatt Olds did much of the same in game two, throwing six innings in his first start of the year, allowed one hit, two walks, one run and also struck out nine. Jason Ruffcorn picked up two saves in two opportunities on Friday—one a one-run save, the other a three-run save.

Oklahoma won game one 2-1 and game two 4-1.

Saturday, though, had a lot less control.

The Sooners and Illinois State we’re tied up at two in the eighth inning of game three. A Peyton Graham sacrifice fly to right-center scored Tanner Tredaway to break the tie. Jaret Godman picked up a one-out save in the ninth inning with Oklahoma winning 3-2.

Levi Prater has a productive first start in game three. The junior southpaw was barreled up more than he’d like, but he finished with 6.1 innings pitched, allowing six hits, two walks, two runs and struck out seven.

The Missouri Valley Conference foes got on the board in game four. A grand slam and solo home run in back-to-back fashion against Oklahoma’s Dane Acker in the third inning of game four proved to be too much. Illinois State tacked on two more in the eighth to ensure the 7-5 win.

Acker had a quality start outside of that one big inning. In his home debut, the San Jacinto College native went seven innings, allowed six hits, five runs, three walks and struck out eight.

Against what was an above average at best pitching staff, Oklahoma managed to only hit .221 as a team, hit .119 with runners in scoring position and outscore Illinois State 14-11 in the four game series. The bright spot was center fielder Tanner Tredaway, who went 8-for-17 on the weekend with three doubles, two triples and a home run.

As expected, the Sooners staff dominated, holding Illinois State to .195 hitting as a team on the weekend and allowed six runs in 35-of-the-36 innings played.

Oklahoma has the week off before traveling to Houston for the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic. The Sooners will take on college baseball powers Arkansas, LSU and have a game against Missouri sandwiched in-between.
