Cam Johnson ready to prove it with Brooklyn Nets

UNC basketball alum Cam Johnson has quickly become one of the NBA’s young rising stars. He’s ready to prove that in his fifth pro season.

Cam Johnson brought two years’ worth of consistent scoring production to the UNC men’s basketball team.

Johnson, who played his two graduate transfer years in Chapel Hill, averaged 16.9 points per game. He hit plenty of clutch shots and reached double-digits in all but nine games over two seasons, including a Tar-Heel high 32 at Clemson on Jan. 30, 2018.

Johnson’s been working himself into the NBA as one of the league’s most promising young shooters. He’s steadily increased his scoring output and maintained a minimum 42% field goal percentage in each professional season.

Now coming off a career-best scoring season (16.6 points per game) with the Brooklyn Nets across the second half of the 2022-2023 campaign, Johnson is ready to prove he’s a mainstay in the NBA.

The Nets rewarded Johnson for his production last year with a new 4-year, $94-million contract.

It’s easy for a professional athlete to get distracted by this type of money. They could blow it all on lavish gifts, more sports cars than their garages can hold or gambling

Not Johnson, who insists that he wants to show the Nets he’s deserving of his contract.

“I still have the same approach: Just get better,” Johnson told the New York Post at Team USA practice in Las Vegas. “Get better and still feel — I think the main thing that I’ve always felt since I’ve been in the league is just to prove it. To prove it every day. And work for it every day and improve every day, and I’ll continue that mindset as long as I play.”

Johnson is expected to continue being the Nets’ starting forward. According to ESPN’s latest depth chart, Johnson will start alongside Spencer Dinwiddie, former Suns teammate Mikal Bridges, Dorian Finney-Smith and Nic Claxton. There’s also a former one-and-done Tar Heel, Day’Ron Sharpe, who could see extensive playing time in Brooklyn.

With Johnson locked down, the Nets can turn their attention to their greatest offseason question mark: Ben Simmons.

JP Tokoto delivers game-winner

Former North Carolina Tar Heel JP Tokoto delivers game-winner for Herd That in TBT.

Former North Carolina Tar Heel [autotag]JP Tokoto[/autotag] delivered a game-winner Saturday night, moving TBT’s Herd That team three games away from winning one million dollars.

Tokoto is a member of the Herd That, the tournament’s fourth seed. Saturday’s game was a matchup against second-seeded Sideline Cancer.

The tournament rules are unique. The outcome is a targeted score instead of  the scheduled clock time. In this scenario, the target score was 73. With Herd That in control, 71-64, Tokoto delivered the game-winning shot on a tightly contested layup.

The game-winner pushed Herd That into the quarterfinals with a matchup against Boeheim’s Army. The team led by Syracuse alumni Chris McCullough should present a good matchup; both teams breezed through their first two games.

The game will tip off at 4 p.m. Eastern time on ESPN+.

Former Tar Heel Pete Nance continues to shine for the Cleveland Cavaliers Summer League team.

Former Tar Heel [autotag]Pete Nance[/autotag] must have had some Oreos before he laced up for the Cavaliers on Monday, shining in Cleveland Summer League win against Memphis.

Nance finished with 9 points on 4 for 6 shooting in 16 minutes of action. The performance comes a day after Nance contributed 11 points, 5 rebounds, and one block in the 99-77 win over the Toronto Raptors.

The former Tar Heel continues to provide quality minutes for the Cavaliers in the Summer League, averaging 17.4 minutes per game in the first three. In those three games, Nance has averaged 8.3 points and 2.7 rebounds. Along with Brady Manek for the Atlanta Hawks, he has become a Tar Heel talked about a lot through the Summer League.

Nance did not get selected in the 2023 NBA draft, yet signed with the Cleveland Cavaliers days after, representing the same team his dad Larry Nance Sr. wore in the early 1990s.

Seeing the Tar Heel carving out a potential spot on the Cavaliers roster is always a good site.

Twitter reacts to Brady Manek’s summer league performance

Twitter reacts to Brady Manek’s strong summer league performances with the Atlanta Hawks.

The annual NBA Summer League is underway, and a few former UNC basketball players are getting a shot to prove they belong, including fan favorite [autotag]Brady Manek[/autotag].

Manek signed with the Atlanta Hawks days before the summer league kicked off, and fans are already pushing for the modern-day Larry Bird to snag a roster spot after strong performances. Manek had a strong performance to kick off his Hawks journey, finishing with 17 points, including five 3s.

On Sunday night, Manek performed under the bright lights again, finishing with 10 points and six rebounds while shooting 57.1% from the field. Along with the strong offensive performance, Manek showed his ability to defend with two blocks.

Unsurprisingly, these performances provoked quite a reaction: Fans admired Manek’s game with his unique look. The ability to stretch the floor and charm the fans had been why UNC fans gravitated toward Manek when he transferred, and NBA fans are getting a taste.

Let us look at how Twitter reacted to Manek’s big performances.

Brady Manek stands out in summer league opener

Former UNC basketball standout Brady Manek was red-hot from the three-point line in the NBA Summer league.

Former North Carolina standout Brady Manek is getting another crack at making an NBA roster for the upcoming season. After spending last year overseas, Manek is back in the NBA Summer League, joining the Atlanta Hawks for the next few weeks.

In his first game with the Hawks, Manek showed his shooting ability.

The forward finished with 17 points, including five made 3-pointers, in the Hawks’ 80-76 loss to the Sacramento Kings. Manek’s 17 points led all scorers on the Hawks as they fought back with a 9-0 run to start the fourth quarter.

Manek put on a nice performance with his former Oklahoma teammate Trae Young sitting courtside. The Hawks and summer league fans saw Manek catch fire from the 3-point line — a familiar scene for UNC basketball fans.

In his one year with the Tar Heels, Manek showed his scoring ability numerous times. That included during the Tar Heels’ run to the national championship game.

Let’s hope Manek can keep this up in the summer league and earn a spot on the training camp roster.

Former North Carolina Tar Heel [autotag]Jawad Williams[/autotag] has been named the Sacramento Kings player development coach.

The announcement came over the weekend after Williams was listed as an assistant coach for the King’s summer league roster, creating a swarm of speculation. Last year, Williams acted in a similar role for Japan’s Nagasaki Verca as an assistant and player development coach.

Williams’ agent, Elfus Sports Management, confirmed the rumors with a post on Instagram announcing the new position.

Cam Johnson shares story on how he became a shooter

Former Tar Heel Cam Johnson explains how he became a shooter on Theo Pinson’s podcast.

We all know [autotag]Cam Johnson[/autotag] can catch fire behind the arch from a single spark, but now we know how the former Tar Heel became a shooter after he shared his story on Theo Pinson’s podcast.

The former UNC star has made a name since being drafted 11th overall in the 2019 draft. Drafted in the perfect situation to be a shooter helped elevate Johnson’s game, earning him memorable playoff moments with the Phoenix Suns and a four-year $108M contract extension from the Brooklyn Nets.

Johnson appeared on Pinson’s “Tidal League” podcast, sharing memories and his journey to the NBA. He even detailed how his 6’8 frame became a marksman from behind the arch.

Johnson has averaged 11.3 points and 3.8 rebounds per game in the last four years, shooting 39.3% from three. His most recent breakout performance came in the first round of the 2023 NBA playoffs, where the former Tar Heel finished with 28 points, going 5 for 11 from deep.

Johnson’s role should only get bigger as he continues to get established on the Nets.

ESPN will not renew Vince Carter’s contract

ESPN expected not to renew Vince Carter’s contract come September.

ESPN will not renew former Tar Heel [autotag]Vince Carter[/autotag] per front office sports, bringing speculation about where the analyst will end up next.

The decision came on a day featuring ESPN cuts that featured some of the top analysts in the business, including Max Kellerman, Jalen Rose, and Jeff Van Gundy. Instead, Carter will finish his contract, and many think the next move for Carter will be returning home to the YES network.

Carter’s best days were spent with the New Jersey Nets, playing alongside Jason Kidd and Richard Jefferson. During his Nets days, Carter had his best career averages in points (23.6), rebounds (5.8), and assists (4.7).

The YES network would be the perfect fit. While others pondered if Carter had anything left in the tank to lace up one last time. Despite a short 3-year stint, Carter made some impressive moments while on ESPN.

Carter contract with ESPN is expected to end in September.

Chicago Bulls extend a qualifying offer to Coby White

The Chicago Bulls extend a qualifying offer to former Tar Heel Coby White.

The Chicago Bulls has extended a qualifying offer to [autotag]Coby White[/autotag], making him a restricted free agent.

It has been plenty of speculation that the Bulls would stick with White, especially after news broke that their starting point guard Lonzo Ball would miss all of next season.

The decision to make White a restricted free agent allows the Chicago Bulls to match any offer the former Tar Heel receives, initially playing it safe.

White’s qualifying offer is worth $7,744,600 million. White can also accept this one-year contract offer at any time but it’s not likely he will, seeing that he has a market.

This past season, White averaged 9.7 points on 44% shooting from the field. It was the lowest point average in his four-year playing career, largely contributing to playing a career-low 23.4 minutes per game.

The former Tar Heel will field a fair share of offers, with White being a great fit for numerous teams. However, anything in a realistic ball range you can expect the Bulls to match.

Harrison Barnes agree to contract extension with the Sacramento Kings

Harrison Barnes agrees to a three-year $54M contract extension with the Sacramento Kings.

Former North Carolina Tar Heels standout Harrison Barnes is staying in Sacramento. As free agency is set to begin on Friday, Barnes has agreed to a three-year $54M contract extension with the Sacramento Kings.

Days after trending from fans speculating Barnes’s next move, the forward has put ink to paper to stay with the Kings. Barnes is coming off a great year, starting all 82 regular season games and helping Sacramento end their 16-year playoff drought.

This past season, Barnes averaged 15 points and 4.5 assists, the ultimate glue piece for the Kings.

Despite rumors of Barnes joining ex-teammate Tyrese Haliburton in Indiana, the Kings retained the unrestricted free agent in hopes of lighting the beam past the first round.

The Kings still have work to do as one of the worse defenses in the NBA, but keeping Barnes for what seems like favorable discounts has to bring joy to Sacramento.
