Here at Jags Wire we’ve been on record for saying the move was one that long should’ve been made and went into details as to why.

Additionally, we discussed what Shad Khan’s biggest problem has been since running the franchise and what needs to be done to fix it.

Jags fire Tom Coughlin

The Jags have begun their process to rebuild their franchise as Tom Coughlin was fired Thursday.

With just two games remaining and the NFLPA calling them out, most felt that the Jacksonville Jaguars would be parting ways from Executive Vice President of Football Operations, Tom Coughlin, by the end of the season. However, it appears they didn’t want to prolong the situation any more.

Wednesday evening owner, Shad Khan issues a statement announcing that Coughlin had been fired, leaving their EVP role vacant for the moment.

Coughlin’s firing came after the NFLPA won two grievances against the Jags this week by former defensive end Dante Fowler Jr. and running back Leonard Fournette. The Jags also could be dealing with others as the NFLPA reported that the Jags account for 25% of recent grievances that have occurred recently in the NFL.

Fowler’s grievance was the first of the week to occur as the team violated the Collective Bargaining Agreement by wrongfully fining him over $700,000 for rehabbing away from the team’s facility in the offseason. Fournette, on the other hand, won a grievance for $99,000 after the Jags fined him for being inactive due to an ankle injury in 2018’s season finale against the Houston Texans.

In addition to his issues with the NFLPA, Coughlin failed to put a winning product on the field since being hired in 2017. While the team was a game away from the Super Bowl in 2017, they’ve regressed mightily since, accumulating a record of 10-20 over the course of the last two seasons. Add in the cap issues and bad calls at the quarterback position, and it would seem that Khan simply had no choice to move on as the Jags’ fanbase have grown very disappointed with how things have gone.

With the NFLPA winning its grievance against the Jacksonville Jaguars it was only a matter of time before players started chiming in on the situation and former cornerback Jalen Ramsey unsurprisingly jumped on the opportunity. Like his teammate Dante Fowler Jr. did, Ramsey took to social media to share his thoughts and posted the following tweet:

As you all at home can see, former Jags receiver Allen Robinson had a response as well, which may be hard to judge. However, it’s worth noting that Robinson is on record for saying he felt that he also needed to get away from the Jags’ organization.

As for Ramsey, it’s pretty much stating the obvious that Coughlin was one of the reasons he left, but he probably wasn’t the only reason he left. Being the star he is, it shouldn’t be ruled out that Ramsey also wanted to land in a more desirable market where he could expand his career beyond football.

Regardless, it’s clear the Jags are a circus at this point. With a rebuild coming up, fans are right to be concerned at the moment because the perception of the team isn’t good right now, which will make the process an uphill battle.

Former Jags DE Dante Fowler Jr. shares thoughts on winning grievance vs. organization

Dante Fowler was revealed to be the player who won the recent grievance against the Jags. He took to Twitter to share his brief thoughts.

The Jacksonville Jaguars were slammed yesterday by the NFLPA after it was reported that an arbitrator ruled in their favor against the organization after the team fined a player over $700,000 for rehab treatments that weren’t mandatory. With the modern-day web being as powerful as it is, it didn’t take long to find out who the player was in former defensive end Dante Fowler Jr. thanks to Mark Long of the Associated Press.

Eventually, Fowler himself came to the light and shared some comments of his own via social media. In a nutshell, he was happy but felt the Jags’ front office hated him based on their actions.

Fowler was traded to the Los Angeles Rams in October of 2018, and as fans expected, the move was fueled by more than the Jags’ upcoming cap situation in 2019. It’s worth noting Fowler had some off the field issues that occurred with the Jags prior, most notably the misdemeanor charges filed against him in 2017, so that likely didn’t help the relationship between him and the Jags either.

There are likely more like Fowler currently on the team who simply don’t like how things have gone under football executive Tom Coughlin and owner Shad Khan. With that being the case, it might be wise of Khan to start removing the stench of this current regime away from the franchise as soon as possible because waiting really does him no good at this point.

Report: Jags ‘likely’ to go through a coaching change after 2019

NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo doesn’t know if it will be before the season, but believes the Jags are heading towards a coaching change.

The Jacksonville Jaguars season has been a big-time failure and the fans aren’t happy. Jags owner Shad Khan likely isn’t happy with the results he’s seen either as the Jags are on a four-game skid in which they’ve been outscored 129-47 and have looked like a dumpster fire organization along the way.

Due to all of the aforementioned issues, many have suspected changes are coming. NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo seems to believe that those changes could definitely include acquiring a new head coach after stating that the Jags are “likely” to move on from Doug Marrone, who has been the Jags’ coach for almost three full seasons now.

“If you’re asking me if it is going to be before Week 17, I honestly have no idea. It’s gonna depend on what happens in these next couple of games here,” Garafolo said Tuesday afternoon. “But I think everyone is looking at this situation saying it’s a likely coaching change in Jacksonville.”

It’s worth noting that Garafolo was the source to break the news of Doug Marrone being hired by the Jags under Gus Bradley, so it appears he knows his stuff when it comes to the veteran head coach. It’s also worth noting Garafolo stated that Marrone could make a case to stay by finishing the season strong and showing he can win with rookie quarterback Gardner Minshew II.

The news is pretty much what most fans were expecting, however, when looking at how the Jags have looked over the last two years. In fact, since going to the AFC Championship the Jags are 9-19, which isn’t a good look —even when looking past 2018, which was a year full of key injuries for the Jags.

I think Marrone is a good coach but there may be varying opinions on him in the locker room because executive vice president of football operations, Tom Coughlin, has seemingly gotten involved with issues that the coach should more so control. A prime example is the Jalen Ramsey situation.

Speaking of Coughlin, Garafolo didn’t really offer any news about his job security or that of general manager Dave Caldwell, though he did say the front office wants to see how the season plays out. However, a half-measure by Khan wouldn’t be wise. Ultimately, he’d still be keeping two people who have played a key part in the organization’s mistakes of the past. There is also the fact that no head coach that’s worth having will want Coughlin hovering over him while he does his job.
