The Seattle Seahawks absolutely owned the 2022 NFL draft

It’s still early, but the Seattle Seahawks landed a rookie class that already looks like the cornerstone of their new era

Back in April, when initial grades were being issued in the wake of the 2022 NFL draft, there wasn’t enough noise being made about the Seattle Seahawks’ class.

NFL.com gave them a C+, Sports Illustrated gave them the same, and they earned a C from USA TODAY Sports.

Touchdown Wire gave them an A, and they got an A- from us here at Draft Wire.

At the halfway mark of the 2022 season, it looks like even those A grades might not have been high enough for the stellar crop of rookies the Seahawks just brought it.

First-round pick Charles Cross and third-round pick Abraham Lucas have immediately entrenched themselves as one of the NFL’s best offensive tackle tandems from Day 1, protecting quarterback Geno Smith in his breakout campaign. They’ve combined for six sacks allowed through the first half of the season, which isn’t too shabby for a pair of rookies. Both have been stellar as pass-blockers, and have helped spearhead a dominant run game.

[lawrence-related id=639951]

Speaking of the run game, second-round pick Kenneth Walker III has made sure the offense hasn’t missed a beat since Rashaad Penny went down with an injury, showing everything we saw from him at Michigan State was real. He has dominated on the ground, averaging a ridiculous 6.1 yards per carry so far this season, quickly becoming one of the Seahawks’ most dangerous offensive weapons.

On defense, Seattle ended up with a pair of starting corners in Tariq Woolen and Coby Bryant. Both have been big-play magnets, with Woolen tied for the league lead with four interceptions, and Bryant leading the NFL with four forced fumbles.

This is all without mentioning the efforts of Boye Mafe, the edge rusher Seattle found with the pick right before Walker. The Minnesota product has shown continued growth, nabbing half-sacks in back-to-back games, and showing a consistent effort to get into the backfield. Like others, he Mafe has shown the potential to grow into a reliable starter at least, and a potential star at best.

It’s still early, but this is looking like the kind of draft class that could quickly turn the Seahawks back into perennial contenders.

Seahawks rookie RB Kenneth Walker III racks up 168 yards, 2 TDs vs. Chargers

For the second straight week, Seattle Seahawks running back Kenneth Walker III put up huge numbers, and showed off his big-play ability

It took a little while for him to get rolling, thanks to a preseason injury, but Seattle Seahawks rookie running back Kenneth Walker III is looking like a superstar now that he’s running at full strength.

The second-round pick out of Michigan State followed up last week’s impressive performance with another big outing Sunday, rushing for 168 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 23 carries, averaging 7.3 yards per attempts as the Seahawks rolled to a 37-23 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers.

The best play of the day from Walker came on a 74-yard touchdown that showed off his impressive blend of vision, explosiveness, and top-end speed:

With Rashaad Penny out with an injury of his own, Walker has taken full advantage of the his opportunity to be the featured back in the Seattle offense, a role he’s not likely to relinquish once Penny returns to full strength.

Why Tariq Woolen is already turning into an elite cornerback

Just six weeks into his rookie season, Seattle Seahawks cornerback Tariq Woolen is already looking like a superstar

Tariq Woolen, the ultra-talented Seattle Seahawks cornerback, has shown immense growth in a short amount of time, turning what was a relatively modest investment of a fifth-round pick into a slam dunk and possibly the best value of anyone in the 2022 NFL draft.

What has caused Woolen to develop this way? Why is he so good already? Why was he passed on by 32 teams multiple times?

Woolen played two years as a starter at UTSA, originally playing wide receiver before converting to cornerback during his junior season. At 6-4 and over 200 pounds, while running a ridiculous 4.26 40-yard dash, it was clear to everyone that Woolen had sky-high potential based on build and athleticism alone. He had the total physical toolbox to develop into a top-flight corner down the road.

While the measurables were off the chart, there was a lot to worry about when you put on the UTSA tape. Woolen was still learning the position as he played, and while there were clear flashes of brilliance, there was also an alarming amount of plays where Woolen was caught by smoother route runners or blown past in lost assignments. Sometimes, it looked like he was chasing the football, as opposed to understanding what was in front of him and diagnosing the play. His physical skillset allowed some reprieve to let him catch up and make plays on his missteps, though.

[lawrence-related id=639951]

His development since being drafted by the Seahawks has been astounding.

Woolen’s understanding of how to use his body to win matchups, as well as processing assignments, has been astounding. Pete Carroll and company have clearly built Woolen up to maximize his physical skillset, as he’s been left on an island early and often due to multiple injuries at the position. He’s performed remarkably, tying for the league lead in interceptions with four, and holding quarterbacks to an impressive 40.2 rating when being targeted.

His ability to keep up with anyone through raw speed and athleticism to swallow up receivers at the line or shadow any type of elite tight end makes him a unicorn of a chess piece on defense. His rapid development in understanding and awareness is just as promising as the physical skill set, too.

His potential shown in just his rookie year is through the roof, so his potential in the future appears to be limitless.

It’s clear Woolen is on a path to being elite, if he hasn’t arrived already.

Arizona vs Seattle Game Preview

Why Arizona Will Win

This team is freakishly weird about road and home games – it can’t win in its own house and is solid on the road. That’s they way it was for a time last year, too.

The running game has perked up at times even without James Conner being healthy – he’s not expected to go in this – but here’s when Kyler Murray, Hollywood Brown, and all the parts of the passing game get to have fun.

Everyone’s running the ball on the Seahawks, but the secondary is about to get hit hard after allowing too many big plays through the air, too.

Seattle needs takeaways to win, and it won’t get them against this bunch. Arizona has spread out three turnovers over the five games, but …

Why Seattle Will Win

Here come the big pass plays.

Geno Smith is putting together a whale of a first half of a season. Granted, he has to keep throwing to make up for the problems on defense, but he’s able to hit the deep passes, DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett have shown up, and this O will keep the pressure on.

The Cardinals aren’t great on third downs, the defense will have a tough time with Kenneth Walker who’ll keep running to set up the Smith deep shots, and everyone has be ready to get running.

Even with all of its problems, Seattle rips off big yards in chunks, is third in the NFL in yards per throw, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Again, Arizona is just too good on the road.

It helped this year to get the Raiders and Panthers away from him, but still, they got the job done. It won’t be an even effort in this, and the defense will get rocked a few times, but Murray will lead a late scoring drive to pull out a thriller.
