NFL suspends Bears’ Javon Wims 2 games for wild punching flurry

The Bears’ Javon Wims is going to cool it for two games after his punching stunt Sunday.

The NFL wasted no time in handing down a penalty to the Chicago Bears’ Javon Wims for his wild, punching attack on the Saints’ Chauncey Gardner-Johnson on Sunday.

Wims went off and threw punches in bunches, failing to realize he was hitting an opponent in full pads and a helmet. The purpose of hitting someone in the helmet remains puzzling.

Mike Dinovo-USA TODAY Sports

Gardner-Johnson denied spitting on an opponent:

Although cameras captured Gardner-Johnson ripping out Wims’ mouthpiece and jabbing a finger in the face of fellow Bears receiver Anthony Miller on previous plays, Gardner-Johnson insisted Monday that “I’m innocent.”

“It ain’t got nothing to do with me. If he’s acting out, that’s on him,” Gardner-Johnson said. “It wasn’t no incident. We won the game. I mean, everybody, it’s a lot of he said, he said. Ain’t nothing happened. Nobody got spit on.

“Shouldn’t be nowhere near the field of play when the game’s going on. So I ain’t answering no more questions about that.”

And the DB felt the need to get in the last word on Instagram:

“That man punch like a female” with a crying/laughing emoji.

49ers trade linebacker Kwon Alexander to the Saints

The San Francisco 49ers traded Kwon Alexander to the Saints.

The trade carousel is spinning as the deadline approaches Tuesday.

The San Francisco 49ers traded one of the mainstays of their defense, LB Kwon Alexander, to the New Orleans Saints.

Alexander was regarded as one of the bigger parts of the defense as the Niners made it to the Super Bowl.

In another deal, the Chargers dealt Desmond King to the Tennessee Titans.

Watch: Bears’ Javon Wims loses mind, tries to pummel Saints’ Chauncey Gardner-Johnson

The Bears’ Javon Wims tried to hit Chauncey Gardner-Johnson with a flurry of punches into the Saint DB’s helmet

The Chicago Bears’ Javon Wims took leave of his senses Sunday during the game against the New Orleans Saints.

Watch as the third-year wide receiver from Georgia unloads a flurry of punches on Saints DB Chauncey Gardner-Johnson.

Not quite sure what Wims thought he was damaging by hitting Gardner-Johnson in the helmet other than the hands he is supposed to use to catch passes from Nick Foles. Wims earned an ejection.

Gardner-Johnson seems to have issues with wide receivers. He was the Saints player who was punched by teammate Michael Thomas in practice that led to the top receiver missing a game for disciplinary reasons.

Watch: Bears’ Allen Robinson uses his head on TD catch

Allen Robinson with a fantastic grab of a TD pass from Nick Foles

Allen Robinson stretched out and used his head, er helmet, to haul in this pass from Nick Foles as the Chicago Bears played host to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.

Watch as Foles looks for his top target in the end zone and Robinson manages to catch the football with the help of his helmet.

Watch: Teddy Bridgewater to D.J. Moore, 74 yards for Panthers’ TD

Teddy Bridgewater found D.J. Moore all alone for a Panthers’ touchdown.

This play would be the definition of a busted coverage. Watch as Teddy Bridgewater finds a wide-open D.J. Moore for a 74-yard touchdown play as the Carolina Panthers take advantage of a flub by the New Orleans Saints’ secondary.

Someone — someones — isn’t going to watch that play when the Saints’ secondary has its meetings this week.

Baltimore Ravens signing Dez Bryant to practice squad

The Baltimore Ravens are signing veteran WR Dez Bryant to their practice squad.

It seems like the time to get veteran wide receivers on the roster or in the organization.

There was news Wednesday the Seattle Seahawks are among the teams trying to sign Antonio Brown as his suspension concludes. And Thursday, the Baltimore Ravens dipped into the pool, signing former Dallas Cowboys first-rounder and star Dez Bryant to their practice squad.

Bryan has not played since 2017. He signed with the New Orleans Saints a year later after being dispatched by Dallas but tore his Achilles in one of his first practices.

Bryant, who played college ball at Oklahoma State, has 531 career receptions for 7,459 yards and 73 touchdowns.

The New Orleans Saints have had a rough year. Coach Sean Payton battled COVID-19. The team thought fullback Michael Burton might have coronavirus but that turned out to be a false positive. Now, word the team’s owner Gayle Benson was the victim of an attempted carjacking last week.

From Nola.com:

New Orleans Saints and Pelicans owner Gayle Benson was sitting in her parked car Uptown last weekend when a man barged in and apparently tried to steal the vehicle, police and team officials confirmed Friday.

The man abandoned his plan when Benson screamed for him to get out. Investigators are now searching for a suspect, the Saints and New Orleans police said.

“I can confirm that an incident did occur in Orleans Parish involving Mrs. Benson while she was in her vehicle,” Bensel said in a statement. “While she was very shaken at the time, she was unharmed and is doing fine. She wanted to send her sincere gratitude to the men and women of the New Orleans Police Department that responded so quickly and professionally. We cannot comment further as this is an active investigation.”
