Oklahoma gains commitment from Florida linebacker Danny Stutsman

For the first time in over a month, Oklahoma has gained a commitment on the recruiting trail. Florida native Danny Stutsman has committed.

For the first time in over a month, Oklahoma has gained a commitment on the recruiting trail.

The Sooners last landed a recruit on March 31 when in-state safety Jordan Mukes pulled the trigger after recently earning an offer from Oklahoma.

Defensive coordinator Alex Grinch is back at it again, as three-star, class of 2021 linebacker Danny Stutsman has announced his commitment to Oklahoma.

Stutsman hails from the Orlando, Florida, area in Winter Garden. The Foundation Academy prospect chose Oklahoma over a final list of Minnesota, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M, Virginia Tech and West Virginia.

For the fifth-straight year, the Sooners have landed a recruit from the state of Florida. Stutsman will join Kendal Dennis (2020), Jaden Davis (2019) and Nik Bonitto (2018) amongst others from the Sunshine State on Oklahoma’s roster.

In the 2021 recruiting class, Oklahoma now holds five commitments. Stutsman is the third defender so far in the upcoming recruiting class, joining state of Oklahoma prospects Mukes and defensive end Ethan Downs.

Oklahoma makes final 3 for No. 1 2021 QB Caleb Williams

The momentum on the recruiting trail for Oklahoma is picking up steam by the day. Caleb Williams cut his list to three, and OU made the list

The momentum on the recruiting trail for Oklahoma is picking up steam by the day.

Targets Christian Leary and Danny Stutsman have commitment announcements coming soon, with the Sooners being the presumed leader for both.

Then there is five-star and No. 1 overall quarterback Caleb Williams. Lincoln Riley made him the main focus for his 2021 recruiting class after the de-commitment of Brock Vandagriff. The Oklahoma coaching staff has been hinting at a ‘Serious 3’ and Williams has been sending out his own cryptic tweets that a decision could be coming.

On Monday, Williams announced a final three from a final six he made a month ago. Oklahoma, as expected, made the list.

Williams cut Clemson and Penn State off his list, and remains focused on the Sooners, LSU and Maryland.

“I really feel like those schools are the best schools for me overall, not just for football,” he wrote in his weekly blog on Monday. “I really feel like those schools can provide me the best opportunity academically and with my football career with the connections I’ve built with the coaches, the fans and the connection my parents and everybody has built with the coaches. The feel with all of those places, it just feels right.

“I really feel like those three can help propel me to the next level and help propel my game to the next level.”

Oklahoma has four commitments for its 2021 recruiting class, but someone like Williams can really push others to join him.

UGA, Ohio State among 4-star Tywone Malone’s top schools

The Georgia Bulldogs and Ohio State Buckeyes made the top schools for four-star 2021 defensive tackle Tywone Malone.

The Georgia Bulldogs and Ohio State Buckeyes are in the list of top schools for four-star defensive tackle Tywone Malone. Malone is a the best recruit in New Jersey in the class of 2021. He plays high school football and baseball at Bergen Catholic.

Malone is 6-3 and weighs 300 pounds. He’s got the size to play college football as a freshman.

Malone announced his top schools via Twitter. His recruitment remains open:

Tywone Malone puts Georgia, Florida, Ohio State, Texas A&M, Michigan, Penn State, Tennessee, Rutgers, LSU, FSU, Virginia Tech, USC, Ole Miss, and Alabama in his top schools. Where will he go next?

Malone, like many elite recruits in the northeast, is projected to go to Ohio State. However nothing is set in stone.

Kirby Smart and Georgia would love for Malone to come to Athens. He’d join Knowhson Moreno as elite New Jersey recruits to commit to UGA.

May recruiting update: Oklahoma still with plenty of options on defensive line

There is no better cure for a defense than a talented, deep defensive line. Here is where Oklahoma’s defensive line board stands in May.

There is no better cure for a defense than a talented, deep defensive line.

Oklahoma’s depth along the defensive line for 2020 remains a big question mark. How guys like Perrion Winfrey and Joshua Ellison come on out of the junior college ranks and how guys like Marcus Stripling and Jalen Redmond improve is going to make all the difference.

As the Sooners head near the halfway point in 2021 recruiting, Oklahoma still has plenty on the board along the defensive line.

Here is where Oklahoma’s defensive line board stands in May for the 2021 recruiting class.

*The star and position rating is according to Rivals.com.

RUSH LINEBACKER

DALLAS TURNER—4-STAR

The highly touted defender is one where the scheme will determine the position. Rivals and 247 Sports have Dallas Turner at different positions, but at Oklahoma, he’d be a RUSH linebacker and don’t even second guess about it. Pulling Turner out of the southeast part of the country will be tough, but the Sooners have had success at St. Thomas Aquinas in Florida recently.

ETHAN DOWNS—3-STAR—NO. 23 WEAK-SIDE DEFENSIVE END

The lone Oklahoma commit along the defensive line. Ethan Downs camped with the Sooners a summer ago, eventually earning an offer and the in-state prospect went ahead and pulled the trigger.

DEFENSIVE END

MONKELL GOODWINE—4-STAR—NO. 4 DEFENSIVE END

The Delaware-Maryland-Virginia area native is one Oklahoma thought it was moving in a positive direction for. Monkell Goodwine left the Sooners out of his most recent list, but the pull with potential quarterback commitment Caleb Williams could help bring Oklahoma back into the thick of things.

SHEMAR TURNER—4-STAR—NO. 10 DEFENSIVE END

As of late, not many top defensive linemen are coming out of the state of Texas. Shemar Turner is an outlier, and the Dallas-Fort Worth prospect is a can’t-miss type of player. There hasn’t been too much word on Oklahoma’s front with Turner, but a regional talent who is uncommitted like him is going to get a push.

SHAMBRE JACKSON—4-STAR—NO. 13 DEFENSIVE END

One of the more interesting names to make this list. Shambre Jackson isn’t a guy most years Oklahoma is in the running for out of Florida, but Jackson continues to send out positive vibes the Sooners way.

DAVID ABIARA—3-STAR—NO. 21 DEFENSIVE END

David Abiara surprisingly committed to Notre Dame early. Oklahoma was a major player in his recruitment and Abiara could be a player that the Sooners could turn to if something up the line doesn’t go their way.

NATHAN RAWLINS-KIBONGE—3-STAR—NO. 32 DEFENSIVE END

The 6-foot-7 prospect from the northwest is one Oklahoma jumped in the race for early on. Nathan Rawlins-Kibonge is one of those rare body types that is hard to ignore. The Sooners are pushing hard and he would fit in perfectly at the defensive end position in Alex Grinch’s defense.

EMAURION BANKS—3-STAR—NO.  35 DEFENSIVE END

Like David Abiara, Emaurion Banks is a player who committed early (Texas Tech). Oklahoma could turn his way if things fall differently with players higher on the board.

TOBECHI OKOLI—3-STAR—NO. 37 DEFENSIVE END

There is no doubt the evaluation of Tobechi Okoli could go a long way. Oklahoma jumped on board early, and Okoli has been receptive to what the Sooners are selling.

DEFENSIVE TACKLE

KELVIN GILLIAM—4-STAR—NO. 9 DEFENSIVE TACKLE

Amongst the biggest recruits Oklahoma has had pushed its way by Williams is Kelvin Gilliam. The athletic defensive tackle from Virginia has been saying nothing but positive about the Sooners in social media and Gilliam is one of the few who have taken place in Oklahoma’s virtual visits.

ISAIAH COE—UNRANKED

Oklahoma has a thing for potential nose tackles from the junior college ranks. Isaiah Coe hails from the same community college as current Sooners’ defensive tackle Perrion Winfrey. It’s early on for junior college recruiting, but Coe is exactly what Grinch is looking for in a zero or one technique defensive tackle.

JAMOND GORDON—UNRANKED

A name to just put off until the coronavirus pandemic’s shutdown on sports is over. Jamond Gordon is from East Mississippi Community College—a place where some of the top SEC teams recruit out of every year.

May recruiting update: Mix of top talent, good evaluations in Oklahoma linebacker

Oklahoma’s defense is a work in progress. Here is what Oklahoma’s linebacker big board looks like as we head into May.

Oklahoma’s defense is a work in progress. In Alex Grinch’s first season as the Sooners’ defensive coordinator, he led the defense to a No. 64 finish in team defense compared to the No. 101 finish they had in 2018.

Even with the big and noticeable improvements, Oklahoma is still a ways off from where they need to be as a perennial College Football Playoff contender.

With Kenneth Murray being the first Oklahoma linebacker taken in the first round since Jackie Shipp in 1984, the Sooners have the momentum to get where they need to be.

Here is what Oklahoma’s linebacker big board looks like as we head into May.

OUTSIDE LINEBACKERS

SMAEL MONDON–5-STAR–NO. 5 OUTSIDE LINEBACKER

The best way to get better quickly? Go after the top dogs. Mondon is in the heart of SEC territory (Dallas, Georgia; Paulding County High School) and will be a tough pull from front runners Georgia and Auburn, but Oklahoma is involved heavily.

CLAYTON SMITH–4-STAR–NO. 14 OUTSIDE LINEBACKER

Smith took an unofficial visit in July of 2019 and the Sooners have been trying to get him back since. The Texarkana, Texas (Texarkana High School), native has shown interest in Oklahoma as well as Texas and LSU among others.

DANNY STUTSMAN–3-STAR–NO. 42 OUTSIDE LINEBACKER

Without any visits to Norman, Stuntsman is leaning heavily towards Oklahoma. Stutsman has made a final six that includes Oklahoma and the likes of Minnesota, Virginia Tech and Texas A&M. He is set to make a decision this week.

TERRANCE COOKS–3-STAR–UNRANKED

From Pearland, Texas (Shadow Creek High School), Cooks is sandwiched between Austin and Dallas, setting up for another recruiting battle in the endless recruiting war between Oklahoma and Texas. Cooks took an unofficial visit to Norman on March 1 of 2020 before COVID-19 put a stop to normalcy.

JAYDON WILLIAMS–3-STAR–UNRANKED

Recently committed to Arizona State, Williams is very much in play for the Sooners. While not pulling offers from the most exciting names in college football, Williams picked up an Oklahoma offer last week prior to his initial verbal commitment to the Sun Devils.

INSIDE LINEBACKERS

KENDRICK BLACKSHIRE–4-star–no. 8 inside linebacker

With two unofficial visits to Norman under his belt, Blackshire has been a fixture in Oklahoma recruiting for quite some time. With solo visits to LSU and Texas also under his belt, Oklahoma will have to duke it out with them as well as Alabama.

Oklahoma currently has just four recruits verbally committed for the 2021 class. Three three-stars and a four-star are currently heading to Oklahoma come national signing day.

The Badgers have long been tied to three-star 2021 SG Julian Roper. Although Wisconsin seemed to be the likely destination for the Michigan native due to his high-school backcourt mate Lorne Bowman already being in the UW 2020 class, 247sports and Rivals have both linked Roper to Northwestern over the past week.

A decision that in all likelihood comes down to Northwestern and Wisconsin will happen likely at 12:50 CT given that Roper is on the eastern time zone.
