Notre Dame Lands Big Time Cornerback Commitment

Notre Dame got some much-needed good news Tuesday afternoon after landing a commitment from top-20 CB Philip Riley from Florida.

The sting of missing out on the Will Shipley sweepstakes didn’t sting as hard, or at least not for as long as Notre Dame fans may have expected.  Less than an hour after Shipley announced his commitment to Clemson, Notre Dame landed a big-time commitment from cornerback Philip Riley.

What do you need to know about Philip Riley?

The four-star prospect attends Bloomingdale High School in Valrico, Florida but is originally from the state of Washington.  Riley had received 40 scholarship offers from the likes of Clemson, Florida State, Penn State, Texas and USC as well as plenty of others to give you an idea of how sought after he was.

This is a win for Notre Dame and an even bigger win for new defensive backs coach Mike Mickens who offered Riley a scholarship not even six weeks ago.  Mickens tweeted his excitement about Riley’s commitment shortly after it was announced.

Riley is the ninth commitment in Notre Dame’s 2021 recruiting class but the first corner back in the group. He joins safety Justin Walters of Bolingbrook, Illinois in the class of 2021’s secondary.

Two New Notre Dame Football Offers Out Today

The Irish were busy today inside the 2022 class, offering a prospect on each sides of the coast.

It’s been a busy recruiting day for the Irish, not all of the news has been good. Long sought-after North Carolina running back Will Shipley spurned Notre Dame and chose Clemson this afternoon, but that will not deter Brian Kelly and his staff from getting back on the horse.

In a span of about a minute, both class of ’22 stars Domani Jackson of California and Virginia’s Aiden Gobaira tweeted out verbal offers from the Irish staff. Starting with Jackson, the 6’1” and 185-pound corner has a very impressive offer list at this early juncture listing USC, Alabama, Georgia, LSU and a host of others.

Jackson was recently named a 5-Star by Rivals and at this early is wide open in his recruitment. Although he currently resides in California, Jackson is originally from the Midwest, having lived in Ohio, Pennsylvania and then Hawaii before his family settled in California. It has been noted he wouldn’t mind heading back to the area for college and with offers from Ohio State and Michigan it will be a hard-fought recruiting battle with the other Midwestern powers.

Gobaira’s recruitment hasn’t been as crazy as Jackson’s, he reports just a few offers including instate Virginia and Virginia Tech along with Penn State, Vanderbilt and Duke. The sophomore defensive end has a great frame at 6’5” but needs to add serious weight, as he weights just 200 pounds at the moment. Gobaira on projection alone has those offers, just imagine when he fills out and learns better technique. Judging by his offer list, Gobaira won’t have any issues with the rigorous academic Notre Dame schedule either.

It is still very early in both of these recruitment’s, as neither has put out a top list of school yet. A long ways to go for either player, but getting their attention at this early stage of the process can be seen as nothing but a positive sign for Kelly and the Irish.

Top ’21 Notre Dame Target Will Shipley Headed to Clemson

Notre Dame’s top priority in the 2021 recruiting class has chosen a different school. Now what?

When it was announced on Monday afternoon that Will Shipley, the top all-purpose-back in the nation for 2021 would be announcing his commitment on Tuesday, all signs pointed to Clemson being his choice.

Now that fear for Notre Dame fans has become a reality as Shipley has announced his commitment with fantastically produced video.

Shipley was seen as the top priority for Notre Dame in this recruiting cycle and the Irish did one heckuva job getting as close as they did with him all things considered.

However, the rich get richer as Clemson lands Shipley’s talents.

What does Notre Dame do now in terms of finding a running back for their 2021 class?  It’ll be tough to bring anyone at this point that will bring anywhere near the hype Shipley would have entered with.

It doesn’t hurt having Lance Taylor leading the way trying to make that impact in the 2021 class still, however.

The Ship(ley) has Sailed, Who Does Notre Dame Turn to Next in ’21 RB Recruiting

Missing out on Will Shipley hurts now, but the Irish do have plenty of other potential running backs they’ve continued to recruit.

At one point in time during North Carolina star Will Shipley’s recruitment Notre Dame was the perceived leader, but then the country shut down amidst the COVID-19 epidemic and the NCAA mandated dead period occurred. With many recruits including Shipley not being able to visit schools they were scheduled to during the summer has made this recruiting cycle one of the oddest ever. This enabled Clemson to really put the full court press on Shipley and gain a commitment from him today.

This is a tough blow for Brian Kelly as Shipley was seen as a Christian McCaffrey clone, a prospect any program would be happy to see don their colors. Kelly knew he couldn’t put all his eggs in one basket, as they have offered six other true running backs aside from Shipley in this class. Three of them have committed, so let’s eliminate TreVeyon Henderson and Lovasea Carroll along with Shipley from the big board. Texas’ Camar Wheaton hold’s an offer from Notre Dame and is viewed as one of the best in the country, but this one will be an uphill battle. Wheaton has local powers Texas and Oklahoma after him along with LSU, Alabama and SMU. If Notre Dame wants to really get involved in Wheaton’s recruitment, the staff needs to step up immediately.

Michigan’s Donovan Edwards is the highest rated local remaining running back with an offer and although he hasn’t released a top list yet, it’s perceived that instate schools Michigan and Michigan State along with Georgia are his top schools. Yes, Edwards seems to have made a connection with Irish commit Blake Fisher, but so did Shipley and look how that turned out.

Ohio back Corey Kiner has pushed his recruitment forward, but it doesn’t seem like the Irish have much of a shot in his recruitment at the moment. Although the Irish have offered him, Kiner isn’t high on the program, as it seems like Cincinnati, Louisville and Michigan have the leg up in his recruitment. He is set to commit on Independence Day, so if Kelly wants a commit from the Ohio back, they’ll have to really up their effort in recruiting Kiner.

The Sunshine State’s Prophet Brown is perhaps the most likely future Notre Dame player on this list. The only problem with that is Brown is being recruited by Notre Dame as a corner and not running back. Could that change after missing out on Shipley?  Either way, look for Brian Polian and Mike Mickens to ramp up their pursuit of Brown, as the clear need for running back and corner in the 2021 recruiting class is obvious for Notre Dame.

The Irish are in need of talent in the backfield and losing out on a commitment from Shipley hurts in the short term. Who the staff turns to now is the biggest question mark, but plenty of talented backs are still in play for the Irish. Notre Dame will bounce back, the pain of losing Shipley will linger, but if Kelly can reel in another big fish, it might not matter in the long run.

Wisconsin football extends offer to a 2021 athlete who does a little bit of everything

The Badgers add another offer in the class of 2021

[lawrence-newsletter]New Badger wide receiver coach Alvis Whitted has waisted no time getting busy in his first few months on the job. Coach Whitted extended another offer to a 2021 WR yesterday. Three-star prospect (according to 247sports) Kamonte Grimes was the latest UW offer in the 2021 class.

On tape, Grimes has highlights on both sides of the football. The wide receiver doubles as a lockdown defensive back, and whatever school lands the Florida native will have to decide where he fits best. He even stepped in at QB during his junior season at Palmetto Ridge High School.

Grimes currently holds offers from the likes of Kentucky, Michigan, and Cincinnati.

Tennessee offers 2023 Florida running back

Tennessee offers 2023 Florida running back.

High school football prospects in the 2023 recruiting class are just finishing up their freshman years and are still very early on in the recruiting process.

A few prospects have already grabbed the attention of major Power 5 programs however, and one of them is running back Richard Young from Lehigh Acres, Florida.

Young added an offer from Tennessee to his already impressive list.

Young is a 6-foot, 190-pound back who does not yet have any major recruiting ratings due to his youth. Despite this, his offer list is littered with some of the biggest programs in college football. Auburn, Georgia, Miami, LSU, Penn State, Wisconsin and Florida State have all offered Young along with several others.

Young’s recruitment will be a long road filled with heavyweights, but Tennessee is jumping in early.

Tennessee offers 2022 cornerback James Monds III

Tennessee offers 2022 cornerback James Monds III.

Tennessee is in the midst of a red-hot run to build the 2021 recruiting class, but that does not mean the Vols have stopped pursuing 2022 talents.

UT offered 3-star cornerback James Monds III from Fort Pierce, Florida to be a part of the 2022 recruiting class.

Defensive coordinator Derrick Ansley – who has been a huge part of Tennessee’s recent recruiting success – is Monds’ primary recruiter. The sophomore at Fort Pierce Westwood weighs in at 5-foot-10, 170-pounds and is rated the No. 42 cornerback in his class by 247Sports.

With an offer list that includes Michigan State, Miami and Arizona, expect Monds’ options to grow as his recruitment continues. A multi-sport athlete, Monds shines on the soccer field as well.

Tennessee does not yet have any prospects committed to the 2022 recruiting class in its early stages.

Clemson vs. Notre Dame? Five-Star Shipley Set to Announce Commitment

Five-star running back Will Shipley is set to announce his commitment to likely either Clemson or Notre Dame on Tuesday. Details here.

Early Monday evening we received news from the young man himself, Will Shipley, that the prized all-purpose-back will be announcing his college decision on Tuesday afternoon.

If you’ve followed here for any significant amount of time you’re probably aware that this almost certainly means bad news for Notre Dame since Shipley was really hoping to make another visit to South Bend before announcing any decision.  What was supposed to happen in mid-March got canceled due to the coronavirus outbreak when the NCAA suspended all in-person visits between college coaches and prospects.

Shipley is regarded as the best all-purpose-back in the country and has been Notre Dame’s number one priority this recruiting cycle.

I’m not going to sit and make a bunch of predictions because whenever you do with a 17 year old you often end up looking really dumb but I’m with the masses here that it doesn’t appear to be good news for Notre Dame’s chances.

If nothing else, unpaid recruiting coordinator/2021 offensive tackle commitment/very close friend of Will Shipley, Blake Fisher didn’t tweet out anything to indicate good news is coming, something he hasn’t been able to stay quiet about in the past.

We’ll have coverage for you on Tuesday in regards to everything Will Shipley.  If he chooses Notre Dame we’ll be thrilled and celebrate that and if he chooses Clemson then we’ll take a deep look at where Brian Kelly, Lance Taylor, Tommy Rees and company go for a running back in 2021.

Recruiting spotlight: 5-star UGA QB commit Brock Vandagriff

Get to know Georgia football 2021 #2 ranked dual-threat QB commit Brock Vandagriff.

5-star dual-threat 2021 quarterback prospect Brock Vandagriff gave his commitment to the G this past January.

Vandagriff, the 6-3, 205 pound rising high school senior, currently attends the Prince Avenue Christian School, in his hometown of Bogart, GA.  He made the decision to stay close to home and play for Kirby Smart and the Dawgs.

Vandagriff is the #2 dual-threat quarterback in the 2021 class and already has a perfect college frame. He ranks as the No. 12 player overall.

His poise in the pocket is very nice, showing confident throws and strong runs in his high school film.

Watch Brock’s junior season highlights here:

Vandagriff was Georgia’s third commitment for the 2021 class, a class that has been slightly delayed due to coronavirus, but we know Kirby’s recruitment never stops.  Georgia’s 2021 class currently has seven commits.

He had offers from Oklahoma, Auburn and Alabama but turned those down for UGA.

“I trust the coaches there, and I trust them in the direction they are going and I want to be able to compete for national championships,” Vandagriff told DawgNation on his decision to sign with the Bulldogs.

According to 247Sports, Vandagriff clocked in at 4.69 seconds on a 40-yard dash, and also recorded a 36.9-inch vertical jump.  Those are crazy numbers for anyone, not just a 6-3 quarterback.

Vandagriff has one more year of high school ball until he gets to work in Athens to compete for the starting QB job.
