MSU Football offers 6-foot-5, 300-pound 2022 OT Nick Williams

Michigan State has offered an unranked, but very large 2022 offensive tackle out of North Augusta, South Carolina.

If we ever post an article about an offensive lineman who has recently been offered by Michigan State Football head coach Mel Tucker, you can rest assured that guy is, at the bare minimum, going to be over 6’4″. Tucker has shown a commitment to adding length to his football team through recruitment and that goes doubly so for the offensive line. On Tuesday, the Spartans offered a 6’5″, 300-pound offensive tackle in Nick Williams out of Fox Creek Charter High School. Williams would be part of the 2022 recruiting class.

Williams is currently unranked on 247sports, but has some major offers from schools like Florida, Florida State, Georgia Tech, Penn State and Tennessee.

At his size, you can tell why Tucker and offensive line coach Chris Kapilovic are interested in Williams.

NCAA approves waiver requests, grants increased recruiting flexibility over dead period

The NCAA has added some new policies designed to grant flexibility to schools over the recruiting dead period and the global pandemic.

[jwplayer suVRxsS0]

According to the NCAA, their DI Council Coordination Committee has approved multiple new blanket waiver requests, along with providing increased recruiting flexibility during the recruiting dead period.

The three blanket waivers that were granted for all Division I members includes, according to NCAA.org:

  • Basketball and football student-athletes to participate in currently defined summer athletic activities without being enrolled in summer school.

  • Schools to provide less than the currently legislated minimum financial aid requirements to maintain membership in Division I. This waiver does not provide relief from other financial aid rules, including financial aid commitments to prospective and current student-athletes or regulations related to the cancellation or reduction of financial aid.

  • Reclassifying schools to count as Division I opponents in the first year of the reclassification process, whether or not the school meets Division I scheduling requirements.

The committee also added new policies to increase flexibility for recruiting from May 11 to the current end of the dead period on May 31st, mostly related to allowing additional people to join recruiting calls with an uncommitted athlete.

Another Notre Dame offer out to an top ’21 Running Back

That’s two days in a row for the Irish staff looking towards the Lone Star State for running back help.

The search for a class of 2021 running back for the Irish continues after yesterday saw Texas’ Alton McCaskill get an offer, today it was another Texan getting an offer in Johnathan (LJ) Johnson.

With Brian Kelly losing out on North Carolinaā€™s Will Shipley, there has been a huge focus on securing an elite running back for the class. Johnson checks a lot of boxes with a 5ā€™10ā€ and 200-pound frame and his offer list shows heā€™s one of the countryā€™s most wanted backs. Johnson holds offers from Georgia, LSU, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Texas and now the Irish have joined the fold. Johnson is ranked as the 43rd overall prospect nationally and 4th running back by the 247Sports composite.

[protected-iframe id=”c3b8da96793ed33468a6df7dbe255806-162776928-178902091″ info=”//www.hudl.com/embed/video/3/10421054/5c11c01b15f5a20e4c10a8bb” width=”640″ height=”360″ frameborder=”0″ allowfullscreen=””]

Johnson isnā€™t going to blow by many defenders but takes great angles due to his exceptional vision. He has a nose for the endzone and is a bruiser, punishing the opposing team running through arm tackles.

Kelly and his staff went all in for Shipley and came up second in his recruitment, which means they have to make some inroads with running backs they werenā€™t heavily recruiting. Multiple offers have gone out in the last two days to back as they continue to find who will fit in best with the 2021 class. A talent like Johnsonā€™s would be more than welcomed into the Irishā€™s running back room.

Notre Dame Offers Elite 2022 Wide Receiver

Notre Dame made a scholarship offer for Caleb Burton, a wide receiver that will be among the most recruited players in the entire 2021 class

Caleb Burton of Del Valle, Texas is going to be one of the most desired players in the 2022 recruiting class.Ā  The four star wide receiver has already received offers from the likes of Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, Oklahoma and plenty of others.

Burton is ranked as the 37th overall prospect by 247Sports and the sixth best receiver in the 2022 class.Ā  A monster target he is not as Burton checks in at 6-0, 165 pounds.

Congratulations to Burton for the offer but I’m guessing his Fighting Irish knowledge doesn’t run too deep if he’s using the hashtag #FightOn upon announcing the offer from Notre Dame.

Burton was a First-team all-district Texas 24-6A as a sophomore and will be among the biggest recruits in the 2022 class for whichever school he is to eventually choose.

Notre Dame Minute Highlights Former Multi-Sport Star

Jeff Samardzija could have been a first round pick had he decided to play in the NFL. Instead he’s made over 100 million in MLB.

When I was growing up I had trouble believing that World Series hero Kirk Gibson was once a star wide receiver at Michigan State.Ā  You mean the guy who heroically homered in Game One of the 1988 World Series used to catch touchdown passes for the Spartans?

Jeff Samardzija has never played in a World Series during his career that has seen him play for the Chicago Cubs, Oakland Athletics, Chicago White Sox and San Francisco Giants.Ā  He has however made over $100 million in his Major League career while posting a career record of 80-104.

Samardzija was an elite talent at Notre Dame, setting receiving records with his incredible play between 2005 and 2006.Ā  He joined “The Notre Dame Minute” with Brian Polian this week and shared some memories of attending Notre Dame and help sell the school/football program.

It’s scary to think about if Samardzija would have went to Purdue at that time but with the offense the Boilermakers were running I can see why it was so tempting.

Samardzija finished his Notre Dame football career with 179 receptions that totaled 2593 yards and 27 touchdowns.Ā  Each of those 27 touchdowns and all but 327 of the yards came his junior and senior years when he helped lead the Irish to a 19-6 record over a two year span.

Wisconsin extends offer to 2022 TE Jack Nickel

The Badgers offer a top TE in the class of 2022

[lawrence-newsletter][lawrence-auto-related count=2 category=1372]The Wisconsin Badgers are continuing the process of starting to build a 2022 class, and recently made their first offer to a 2022 tight end. UW extended an offer to three-star TEĀ Jack Nickel yesterday per his Twitter account.

TheĀ Alpharetta, Ga. (Milton) native has been receiving division one interest since early in his freshman season, and already holds offers from the likes of Colorado, Florida State, and Kentucky. At 6-foot-4 and 230 pounds, the sophomore clearly has what it takes physically to be a contributor at the next level, and of course has two more years to grow before playing his college ball.

On tape, Nickel not only shows his ability as a pass-catcher in the open field, but also his prowess as a solid blocker in the run game. Check out sophomore season highlights from the Milton High School standout via Hudl: http://www.hudl.com/v/2Bg0xb

MSU fan survey: Mel Tucker exceeding expectations in recruiting

The early returns have been positive for Michigan State’s new football coach.

Mother Nature wasn’t the only one making it rain this April.

The notoriously precipitation-filled month was one of the more exciting months in recent memory for Michigan State football recruiting. First-year head coach Mel Tucker started the fourth month of 2020 with zero committed prospects and ended the 30 days with ten recruits and a top 25 recruiting class. Prospects from Michigan, Florida, Texas, Maryland, and New Jersey made for an exciting first batch of new players under the new regime.

It was enough to get an MSU fanbase that had been contemplatively sleepy the last two years out of its collective seat and again excited about their football program.

Anybody who pays attention to Tucker, his mantras, and his reputation shouldn’t be surprised by the early results. Tucker came to MSU as a highly-regarded recruiter, hardened by the battlegrounds of SEC recruiting. A reasonable expectation for Tucker during his first season is (perhaps “was” due to the COVID-19 pandemic) to be competitive, show some promise, and pull a top 25 recruiting class. That last one is a decently high bar; one Mark Dantonio only cleared four times in 13 years. However, the expectations should be higher for Tucker. When he says the biggest thing he has learned as a coach is to, “recruit every day,” he better recruit every damn day.

Despite those lofty recruiting expectations, Tucker has cleared the bar through the beginning of May for a majority of respondents to this Twitter poll.

I assume a good portion of the 2% voting “below” are either trolling or clicked the wrong answer. The rest are loons.

On the surface it may seem absurd to suggest anything other than Tucker greatly exceeding expectations. He got ten commits adding up to the 23rd-ranked class in the country less than two months into his job without the ability to get recruits on campus because there’s a damn pandemic going on outside. All fair.

There is, however, another side to the coin. Right now Michigan State’s average prospect rating on 247Sports is .8496. That’s on a scale from zero to .9999. MSU’s 2020 recruiting class–Mark Dantonio’s final class at Michigan State–had an average prospect rating of .8568. That class finished ranked 43rd in the country and tenth in the Big Ten. In 2017 Michigan State’s average prospect rating was .8490, the lowest since Dantonio’s first full class in 2008. That 2017 class ranked 36th in the country and sixth in the Big Ten. In order to exceed expectations, Tucker has to handedly beat those those marks by time the early signing period rolls around in December.

I added another poll to try and put Tucker’s recruiting on a numerical scale. As you can see a lot of fans are very happy with the start, but still feel there is some work to be done.

To get to a nine or ten on that scale Tucker will need to start winning some real recruiting battles. He’ll need to convince top 300 prospects to choose Michigan State over the likes of Michigan, Penn State, Notre Dame, Oregon, USC, etc. Win a few of those and he’d be cooking with gas. There are plenty of intriguing prospects with some good upside in MSU’s 2021 class. There also needs to be a few no-doubt players in there as well.

However it shakes out, one thing is for certain. Michigan State fans are overwhelmingly convinced their football program’s recruiting game is in a better spot right now with Mel Tucker than had Mark Dantonio not retired.

Given Dantonio;s inability to consistently sign recruiting classes up to the standard of his team’s actual on-field performance and the early returns for Tucker, that result was expected.

There is still much to be decided as college football recruiting is in a very strange time due to the coronavirus pandemic. Fall could be a bizarre time of de-commits and flips if on and off-campus recruiting activities are allowed to return in full.

It’s early, but Michigan State fans are finally confident they have a head coach and staff that can recruit well enough to keep them competitive with the best teams in the country for sustained periods. The first month of recruiting action was exciting, but the calendar has turned and like the May flowers brought on by the April shower, there is still plenty of growing to be done.

5-star UGA QB commit Brock Vandagriff recruiting top talent to Georgia

Georgia football 5-star QB commit Brock Vandagriff is doing some recruiting of his own on Twitter, encouraging prospects to sign with UGA.

Georgia’s 2021 recruiting class, led by 5-star quarterback commit Brock Vandagriff, is starting to take shape as we head into the summer.

Vandagriff, from Bogart, Georgia, plays for Prince Avenue Christian School and seems to be actively recruiting some of the most talented recruits to play along side him at UGA in 2021.

Tuesday, Vandagriff tweeted 5-star offensive tackle Amarius Mims from Cochran, Georgia, encouraging him to be the next piece of Georgia’s talented offensive line.

Mims (6-7, 315)Ā  is rated as the No. 2 OT and the No. 1 player in Georgia, so we can’t blame Vandagriff for wanting Mims to protect his blindside next year.

Next, Vandagriff continued his recruiting on Twitter by tweeting 5-star linebacker Smael Mondon out of Dallas, Georgia.

Mondon (6-3, 220) is rated as the No. 2 OLB and the No. 3 player in Georgia.

According to the 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions, both Mims and Mondon are predicted to sign with Georgia.

I suppose we can add Vandagriff to the list of recruiters with Kirby Smart and the Georgia coaching staff. It’s always nice to see a young leader with the willingness to help his program before he even takes the field.

Tennessee offers 4-star 2022 Texas athlete

Tennessee offers 4-star 2022 Texas athlete.

Tennessee has offered Brenen Thompson, a 4-star athlete from Spearman, Texas to be a part of the 2022 recruiting class.

A 4-star 247Sports prospect that is listed as the No. 26 athlete and the No. 28 player in Texas, Thompson has attracted significant SEC attention.

Spearman has played a variety of offensive positions throughout his high school career, and has playmaking ability that has earned him offers from Alabama, Auburn, Texas A&M, Ole Miss, Michigan, Florida State and others.

Spearman certainly has weight to add with a 5-foot-10, 165-pound frame, but has athleticism that shows his high upside.

Tennessee does not yet have a commitment in the 2022 recruiting class.

Keon Sabb from Willimastown, New Jersey announced the offer on his Twitter page.

Sabb is a 6-foot-1, 190-pound prospect with an impressive offer list. Baylor, Florida, Michigan, Ole Miss, Penn State and several other Power 5 programs have offered the rising junior at Williamstown High School.

Sabb rates as a 4-star prospect, the No. 1 athlete in his class, and No. 4 player nationally per 247Sports. A football, basketball and track athlete, Sabb projects as a safety at the college level.

Tennessee tight ends coach Joe Osovet is leading the charge in Sabb’s recruitment, as Osovet has the majority of the northeastern United States covered in recruiting for Jeremy Pruitt’s staff.

UT does not yet have a commitment for the 2022 recruiting class.
