Nation’s No. 1 safety talks ‘very important’ Clemson offer

The Clemson Insider recently caught up with a newly offered Peach State athlete, who reported an offer from Clemson last week. When June 1 rolled around, it didn’t take long for Parkview (Lilburn, Ga.) four-star Mike Matthews to have an offer from Clemson in his inbox.

Matthews spoke with TCI last week and detailed an offer that had been in the works for some time now. He also updated his current recruitment and where Clemson currently stands in the mix of things.

“I was very excited,” Matthews said regarding receiving an offer from Clemson last week. “It’s very important for me for a school like that to offer me. It shows how they feel about me as a player.”

Matthews was expecting Clemson to pull the trigger on an offer, mainly because Mickey Conn had been showing a lot of interest and he talked about a potential offer when the Peach State athlete visited back in March. According to Matthews, Clemson’s co-defensive coordinator/safeties coach has been relaying to him for some time now that he’s one of the top guys on his board.

“It was really on my visit (in March),” Matthews said when he first felt like an offer from Clemson was possible. “When I went on my visit it was me and another safety (Noah Dixon) and he told us that we were his favorites. It just means a lot for such a good coach like him to see that in me.”

For Matthews, the offer from Clemson means so much more because of the relationship he was able to build with Conn.

When Clemson formally turned the page to offering prospects in the 2024 class on June 1 and started doling out offers to rising junior recruits, Dixon, a four-star safety out of Troup County High School (Lagrange, Ga.) reported an offer from the Tigers.

Matthews followed suit the following morning.

When we spoke with Matthews at the time of his offer, he indicated that Clemson was at the top of his recruitment. That was, of course, before he made his latest unofficial visit to campus on Tuesday.

Clemson offered Matthews at the safety position, but most schools are split on where they see the multi-faceted athlete at the next level. Matthews said that there are some programs that have offered him with the caveat that they’ll figure out what position he’ll play at the next level later on.

As far as the remainder of his recruitment is concerned, Matthews has tried to plan other visits, in addition to the Clemson one he took Tuesday. Back in May, Matthews told us that he was looking to visit Georgia, Alabama, Auburn, Wake Forest, North Carolina, Ohio State and Oklahoma.

Though, with basketball starting back this summer, he’s finding it difficult to plan visits around his schedule.

Matthews mentioned Clemson, Ohio State, Michigan, Georgia and Notre Dame as the schools that are currently recruiting him the hardest.

247Sports considers Matthews (6-3. 180) to be the No. 1 safety and the nation’s No. 10 overall prospect regardless of position in the class of 2024.

2024 5-star QB CJ Carr commits to Notre Dame over MSU, UM, others

Michigan State has come up just short on one of the top quarterback targets in the 2024 class

Michigan State has come up just short on one of the top quarterback targets in the 2024 class.

Five-star quarterback CJ Carr announced where he’ll be playing his college ball on Thursday, and it sadly won’t be in East Lansing, Mich. Carr, the grandson of former Michigan head coach Lloyd Carr, officially committed to Notre Dame on Thursday.

Michigan State was one of six finalists for Carr’s talents, with Notre Dame, Michigan, Wisconsin, Georgia and LSU being the other schools in play. Carr hails from Saline, Mich. and is ranked as the No. 5 quarterback and No. 20 overall prospect in 247Sports’ composite rankings for the 2024 class.

Carr’s decision to commit to Notre Dame could influence another big-time quarterback prospect Michigan State is targeting — 2023 five-star prospect Dante Moore out of Detroit. Michigan State has made Moore a priority but Notre Dame was considered by some as the favorite to land him. Could Carr’s decision influence Moore to go elsewhere and maybe open the door for Michigan State? That may be a bit optimistic as a Spartans fan but is something to keep an eye on with Carr locking in with the Fighting Irish.

Alabama Morning Drive: Each official visitor set to arrive today in Tuscaloosa

Alabama has a massive recruiting weekend that starts today!

Good Friday morning, Alabama nation! Welcome back to another edition of Alabama Morning Drive where we do our best here at Roll Tide Wire to deliver the latest news and notes involving your beloved Crimson Tide each weekday morning.

We have a really fun installment this morning as we are going to take a quick look at which prospects are expected to be in Tuscaloosa today to start their official visits with the Tide.

This weekend is one of the most impressive lists of prospects that will be in town at one time as you will ever see. Seven of the top 100 players according to On3 are set to be on campus over the weekend, five of which are five-star prospects and national top 25 players.

Alabama head coach [autotag]Nick Saban[/autotag] has a chance to impress some of the nation’s best, and I expect this weekend to generate a lot of national buzz on the recruiting trail.

Let’s take a look at who is set to be on campus, shall we?

Jimbo Fisher football camp evaluations critical in Aggies’ pursuit of top-rated recruits

Jimbo Fisher Football Camp evaluations are critical in Aggies’ pursuit of top-rated prospects. See which targets picked up offers this week.

Jimbo Fisher’s two-day football camp, did exactly what he and his staff had anticipated – bring highly touted prospects to College Station, allow coaches to evaluate them on the field, and leave these prospective student-athletes no doubt in how the Aggies feel about them.

Top camp performers found themselves in Jimbo’s office, shaking his hand, and hearing that they had received an offer to join the Aggie family. To say these standout performers were “blessed” to receive an offer would be a true understatement.

Check-out the six latest prospects who left Aggieland with an offer from Texas A&M – another step closer to continuing on the path of the top-rated recruiting class in the nation.

Alex Birchmeier plans to enroll early at Penn State

One of Penn State’s biggest commits in the Class of 2023 says he will be enrolling early.

Penn State has invested its time and effort immensely in the Class of 2023 in improving the quality of the offensive line, and one key member of that recruiting class intends to join the program in January.

[autotag]Alex Birchmeier[/autotag], the first commitment for Penn State in the Class of 2023 and a five-star offensive lineman, says he plans on enrolling at Penn State in January, according to Lions247. That will allow Birchmeier to participate in Penn State’s offseason workout conditioning and spring football practices next year. All of that will put him on a fast track to finding a role on the Penn State offensive line, possibly as early as the 2023 season.

Penn State’s entire offensive line is under a microscope in 2022 after a tough 2021 season. The Nittany Lions lose Rasheed Walker to the NFL draft and welcome in one of the top offensive linemen in the transfer portal, Hunter Nourzad. The expectation is the offensive line will be improved in 2022, and it will have to be in order for Penn State’s offense to have any chance of being consistently productive.

Penn State had a rough season running the football and quarterback Sean Clifford was knocked out of two games last season due to injury. Having an improved offensive line will help both of those causes in the fall. But the Class of 2023 is showing Penn State is attacking the overall offensive line picture pretty heavily.

In addition to the five-star Birchmeier, Penn State also has commitments from [autotag]Joshua Miller[/autotag] (four-stars according to On3) and [autotag]Anthony Donkoh[/autotag] (three-stars) out of Virginia (Birchmeier’s home state as well), and five-star [autotag]J’ven Williams[/autotag] from Reading, Pennsylvania.

The 2022 Dabo Swinney Football Camp continues this weekend with sessions taking place today, Saturday and Sunday, which is the final day of this year’s Swinney Camp.

With the Swinney Camp set to wrap up this weekend, The Clemson Insider gives a preview of some of the prospects planning to make their way to Tiger Town to compete during the final three days of camp:

One of the headliners slated to take part in the three-day overnight camp from June 10-12 is Lawrenceville (Ga.) Mountain View four-star Justin Greene, the nation’s No. 2 defensive lineman and No. 30 overall prospect in the 2024 class, per 247Sports.

Greene – a 6-foot-4, 245-pound rising junior – was previously in Tiger Town on March 12 and came away very impressed after his visit to Clemson. He told TCI last month that he was excited to show the Tigers what he can do at camp.

“I’m pretty excited to (get) up there,” Greene said. “I haven’t had the chance to show the coaches what I can do with this new put-on size.”

Other notable prospects planning to camp at Clemson from June 10-12, to name some, are Yulee (Fla.) 2023 three-star safety Landon Hale, Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) Dillard 2023 three-star running back Christopher Johnson, Matthews (N.C.) Weddington 2024 tight end Brooks Mauk and Lynchburg (Va.) Liberty Christian Academy 2025 running back Gideon Davidson.

TCI recently spoke with each of the aforementioned recruits, and you can read more about them at the links below:

Hale: LINK

Johnson: LINK

Mauk: LINK

Davidson: LINK

While those prospects will be at the Swinney Camp all weekend, others will participate solely in today’s camp, including guys like Pensacola (Fla.) Pine Forest 2023 three-star wide receiver Donielle Hayes and Navarre (Fla.) 2024 linebacker Zavier Hamilton.

Hamilton — a 6-foot-1, 205-pound rising junior — has built up quite the relationship with Clemson defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Wesley Goodwin.

Talking with TCI recently, Hamilton revealed what he’s been hearing from Clemson as of late and where things currently stand with his recruitment.

“They just want to get me up there as soon as possible, pretty much,” Hamilton said.  “They still love me. They love how personal I am. I’ve been talking to them pretty much every week, every Friday. It’s just been great building that relationship and they just want to see me come up there to camp and I could see an offer that day.”

Hodgenville (Ky.) Larue County quarterback Cutter Boley – a class of 2025 recruit with offers from Kentucky, Missouri, Ole Miss, Pittsburgh, Tennessee, West Virginia and others – will visit today and then camp Saturday.

Boley previously made his way to Tiger Town for an unofficial visit on Friday, April 8.

“It was amazing,” Boley told TCI regarding the visit. “I had a great time. I really got a chance to sit down and talk with Coach (Brandon) Streeter. He seemed like a great dude. I loved all the facilities. I loved all the people. It was a great visit.

“It’s definitely one of the best visits I’ve taken so far and the people there are amazing. They’re second-to-none. The people (stood out the most) 100%. Everyone there seemed really involved and they all had the same goal in mind and they all seemed like great people, nonetheless.”

Boley also told TCI that Streeter told him that he loved his film, size and arm talent.

“He said I have all the attributes to be a big-time quarterback,” Boley said of what he heard from Clemson’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach while he was on campus.

Boley will be joined at the camp on Saturday by a bunch of other top prospects, such as Lagrange (Ga.) Troup County 2024 four-star linebacker Jaqualin Birdsong, Birdsong’s teammate at Troup County, 2024 four-star safety Noah Dixon, Loganville (Ga.) Grayson 2024 four-star offensive lineman Waltclaire Flynn, Fiskdale (Mass.) The Loomis Chaffee School 2024 four-star quarterback Dante Reno, Norcross (Ga.) Meadowcreek 2024 four-star defensive lineman Champ Thompson and Cornelius (N.C.) Hough 2024 kicker Nolan Hauser.

A couple of the campers expected Sunday are Nashville (Tenn.) Lipscomb Academy 2024 four-star cornerback Kaleb Beasley and Tampa (Fla.) Jesuit 2024 three-star linebacker Drew Woodaz, the younger brother of Clemson freshman linebacker Wade Woodaz.

Local standout cornerback Misun Kelley, a class of 2023 prospect from Daniel High School (Central, S.C.), told TCI he might make it to Clemson this weekend as well.

Lake Mary (Fla.) 2023 three-star cornerback Braeden Marshall told TCI last month that he was eyeing a visit to Clemson on June 10 or June 11, but he will instead visit Wisconsin this weekend and then travel to North Carolina later this month. He made an official visit to UCF from June 4-6 and is set to make a decision on July 30.

Also of note, Irmo (S.C.) Dutch Fork 2023 running back Jarvis Green originally intended to camp at Clemson but is no longer planning to.

Following is a list of prospects TCI has confirmed as expected participants in the Swinney Camp sessions this weekend. Of course, this is not a full list of campers but rather some of the notable names planning to be there, and as always, these lists are fluid and subject to change.

Stay tuned to TCI throughout the weekend as we will have complete coverage of the Swinney Camp.

Michigan State football offers 2027 wide receiver and safety Kanan Khansarinia

Michigan State offers 2027 wide receiver and safety Kanan Khansarinia

When I saw the offer that went out today from Michigan State football, I had to do a double-take. On Thursday the Spartans offered 2027 wide receiver and safety Kanan Khansarinia, who has been on campus this week for the Spartans’ summer football camp.

Khansarinia is from Huntington Beach, CA and recently finished the seventh grade, which seems kind of crazy but is in line with the way Tucker has recruited since coming to MSU.

This offer comes on the same day that MSU offered Danel Odom of the 2026 class. This has been a trend under Mel Tucker where he has gotten in very early with the recruitment of very young players and it looks like this summer camp will be another opportunity for him and his staff to look at an upcoming generation of players before they have dozens of offers already racked up.

Notre Dame Twitter reacts to C.J. Carr commitment

How did you react to the news?

We don’t know what career [autotag]C.J. Carr[/autotag] will have at Notre Dame. For all we know, he’ll turn out to be the biggest quarterback bust in program history. At the moment, this is terrific news for the program. Everyone is so confident in him that [autotag]Brady Quinn[/autotag] showed up during his announcement and flat-out told him to break every program record he currently has.

With such a big commitment to the Irish, it was expected that members of the fandom would take to Twitter to express their delight. Some were simply giddy, and others were analytical. Even [autotag]Tommy Rees[/autotag], Carr’s future offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach had to pile onto the celebration.

All anyone knows is Carr’s first game wearing the blue and gold can’t come soon enough. Yeah, we’ll have to wait a little longer for it, but good things come to those who wait, right? In the meantime, let’s see what Notre Dame Twitter hasd to say about this news:

Spartans offer elite 2024 4-star DL Jerod Smith

Michigan State football has extended a scholarship offer to the top player in Connecticut for the 2024 class

Michigan State football has extended a scholarship offer to the top player in Connecticut for the 2024 class.

Smith is ranked as the No. 8 defensive lineman and No. 55 overall player in 247Sports’ rankings for the 2024 class. He’s also the No. 1 player from the state of Connecticut.

Michigan State joins the mix on Smith’s recruitment with numerous other Big Ten schools and other power five programs. Smith already holds offers from Kentucky, Penn State, Iowa, Nebraska, Rutgers, Maryland, Tennessee, Ole Miss and North Carolina.
