Darryl Strawberry returns to East Tennessee where his professional baseball career began.

Darryl Strawberry returned to East Tennessee on Monday.

He was a speaker at the Emerald Youth Foundation in Knoxville.

Strawberry played in Major League Baseball from 1983-99 with the Mets, Dodgers, Giants and Yankees.

He won four World Series championships, was an eight-time All-Star, a two-time Silver Slugger Award winner and earned National League Rookie of the Year honors in 1983.

Strawberry was selected No. 1 overall by the Mets in the 1980 MLB draft. He debuted in professional baseball with Kingsport in the Appalachian League, playing 44 games in 1980.

Strawberry discussed his career and life at the Emerald Youth Foundation and members of the Lady Vols’ softball team were in attendance, including assistant coach Chris Malveaux.

Cincinnati defeated St. Louis, 19-2, Friday at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, Missouri.

Former Vol Nick Senzel entered the game as a pinch hitter and remained in the contest in right field. He was 1-for-2 and scored one run. The contest was Senzel’s first appearance for the Reds since Sept. 24.

Senzel was the No. 2 overall selection in the 2016 Major League Baseball draft. He played at Tennessee from 2014-16 and was an All-America standout and an All-Southeastern Conference performer.

Senzel came to the Vols from Farragut High School in Farragut, Tennessee.

Cincinnati will next play Saturday at St. Louis. First pitch is slated for 7:15 p.m. EDT at Busch Stadium.

Former Vol Yan Gomes started at catcher for Chicago. He was 0-for-4 and recorded one RBI against the Brewers. Gomes has recorded eight hits in his last 10 games.

Gomes played at Tennessee from 2007-08 before transferring to Barry University.

He won the World Series with the Nationals in 2019. The former Vol was an American League All-Star with Cleveland. Gomes won a Silver Slugger Award while playing for Cleveland in 2014.

Chicago will next play on Saturday at Milwaukee. First pitch is slated for 7:10 p.m. EDT at American Family Field in Milwaukee.

Former Vol Andre Lipcius stared at third base for the Tigers. He was 2-for-3, recording one run and one walk.

The former Vol was a third-round selection by Detroit in the 2019 MLB draft (No. 83 overall).

Lipcius played third base and shortstop for Tennessee from 2017-19 and was selected to the SEC All-Freshman team in 2017.

He became the third Vol during the Tony Vitello era to debut in Major League Baseball, joining Garrett Crochet (2020) and Ben Joyce (2023).

Vitello has served as the Vols’ head coach since 2018.

Detroit will next play Friday, beginning a three-game series against Cleveland.

First pitch is slated for 6:40 p.m. EDT at Comerica Park.

Gomes has a two-game hitting streak, while recording eight hits in his last 10 games.

Chicago has a four-game winning streak.

Gomes played at Tennessee from 2007-08 before transferring to Barry University.
