Experts pick Lions over Football Team in a battle of mediocrity

Even though this game won’t be the most exciting, experts are picking the Detroit Lions to beat the Washington Football Team this week.

The Detroit Lions (3-5) are at Ford Field once again, this time facing off against the Washington Football Team (2-6) in Week 10 of the 2020 NFL season.

These two teams went head to head just a year ago, in a battle that produced a total of seven field goals between the two teams, resulting in an ugly 19-17 loss for the Lions.

Last week, the Lions dug a hole for themselves against division rival, Minnesota Vikings and they had no answers on how to get out. The defense couldn’t stop Dalvin Cook, and the Lions offense repeatedly shot themselves in the foot. With a sense of lackluster leadership driving this team, the 2020 season is currently in a tailspin.

The Lions roster is banged up once again this week, especially on offense. Kenny Golladay is out, whereas T.J. Hockenson, Hal Vaitai, and Joe Dahl are all questionable. The Lions called up Dan Skipper to assist, but it’s hard to ignore the holes these injuries are potentially causing.

The Football Team’s bread and butter is their high-powered defensive line that sports four 1st-round picks. They also have the top pass defense in the league according to Football Outsiders DVOA metrics. Their two main weapons on offense are Terry McLaurin and Antonio Gibson, and they will be led by Alex Smith, who gets his first start in over two years — after a near career-ending injury.

Despite a challenging defense in front of them, most experts still believe the Lions are a better overall team, and according to NFL Pickwatch, 75-percent of experts are going with the Lions at the time of this writing.

Hopefully, they come out of the gates swinging and don’t let up, or this could another disappointing week.

Detroit Lions Week 9 rookie report: Welcome back Quintez Cephus

Examining the Detroit Lions rookie roles as they prepare to take on the Minnesota Vikings in Week 9.

The Detroit Lions are headed to Minnesota to take on the Vikings today in the hopes of bouncing back from last week’s gut-wrenching loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

Much like the Lions, Minnesota has underperformed this season but has showed some real flashes of potential. Last week, the Vikings beat out the Packers in an impressive display in the running game — something that the Lions struggled against last week.

This will be a tough divisional matchup for Detroit, and one that may define the rest of their season. A win pushes the Lions to 4-4, a loss makes it a resounding 3-5, likely taking away any chances at a postseason.

Here’s what to expect from the rookies of the Detroit Lions this week:

CB Jeff Okudah

Okudah will likely move down to the reserves now that starting cornerback Desmond Trufant is healthy.

Don’t let this demotion make you think that the third-overall pick has been a bust in Detroit. It’s quite the opposite, actually. Okudah has shown improvement every week that he’s been on the field this season. Right now, he’s just still learning the ropes of the NFL, and Trufant along with second-year cornerback Amani Oruwariye are just better at the moment.

Expect Okudah to be the primary backup cornerback behind Trufant and Oruwariye. Justin Coleman will likely play in the slot, making Okudah the fourth corner on the depth chart but coudl see time in a possible rotation.

RB D’Andre Swift

If Swift is to make an impact in this game, it will have to be on the ground. The running back has been praised for his ability as a pass-catcher out of the backfield, but to his dismay, the Vikings haven’t let a running back score a receiving touchdown yet this season. To make it worse for the rookie, no running back has had more than 27 receiving yards against Minnesota in 2020.

Swift, for some reason, has had to share his snaps with Adrian Peterson, despite the rookie showing plenty of flashes of potential. The Vikings have allowed over 100 rushing yards per game this year, so hopefully Swift can make an impact there.

Expect the rookie running back to assume receiving and third-down duties for this game, and hope that he gets more attention than Adrian Peterson in the run game.

OL Jonah Jackson and Logan Stenberg

Jackson has started every game this season, and will continue to do that this week. The question for this game is, where will he line up?

Starting guard Joe Dahl has been ruled out for this matchup and starting guard/tackle Halapoulivaati Vaitai is a bit banged up. Depending on what the Lions choose to do, Jackson could end up on either the left or right sides of the offensive line.

Stenberg is once again inactive.

WR Quintez Cephus

Cephus played in the first two games of the season while Kenny Golladay was out with an injury. Golladay will be out for the unforeseeable future with a hip injury and Jamal Agnew has been ruled out as well, meaning that Cephus should be seeing the field for the first time since week 4.

Expect him to back up Marvin Jones and Marvin Hall on the outside. But don’t rule out his ability to create some mismatches as a big-bodied slot receiver.

DL John Penisini

Penisini took 14-percent of defensive snaps in week 1. By week 8, he was on the field for over 60-percent of defensive snaps.

The rookie nose tackle has exceeded any and all expectations of him for this season. While his stat line looks bleak with just 11 tackles, two of which went for a loss, Penisini has done an exceptional job at creating pressure in the middle of the defensive line and helping contribute to big plays against the run.

Expect his snap counts to start plateauing a little this week as he will be sharing his snaps with Danny Shelton, Nick Williams, and Da’Shawn Hand. The rookie will have a tough assignment against Vikings’ Dalvin Cook, who decimated Green Bay’s defense last week for 163 rushing yard and four total touchdowns.

Experts go purple and gold in the Lions at Vikings Week 9 matchup

The Detroit Lions are on the road to face the Minnesota Vikings in Week 9 and experts are leaning towards the purple and gold for the win.

The Detroit Lions (3-4) are on the road this week to face the Minnesota Vikings (2-5), hoping to get their record back to .500 and avoid falling into the division cellar.

The Vikings are on a quest this week to extend their five-game winning steak against the Lions dating back to 2017. The Vikings have outscored the Lions 143-78 during that timeframe.

The Lions fell victim to their own blunders last week, losing to the Colts with untimely turnovers and penalties. Meanwhile, the Vikings are on Cloud 9 after clinching a 28-22 victory against the Green Bay Packers riding Dalvin Cook’s four-touchdown performance.

So far this season, experts have tended to veer the opposite way of the Lions in their matchups, and this week isn’t any different. According to NFL Pickwatch, 82-percent of experts are favoring the Vikings in this division battle, at the time of this writing.

The Vikings have been hit hard this season with the injury bug and this week isn’t any different. The latest is at their cornerback group with three already out for the game, with another considered questionable. Luckily for the Vikings, their offense, led by Kirk Cousins, Dalvin Cook, and Adam Theilen, has been able to keep them competitive.

The Lions will also be without a few key players this week including starters Kenny Golladay, Trey Flowers, and Tracy Walker. While Matthew Stafford has been activated from the Reserve/COVID list, which bodes well for the Lions’ chances this week. The defense will have their hands full this week with Cook, so it’ll be interesting to see if they can continue their run defensive improvements or regress back.

The X-factor has to be Everson Griffen’s return to Minnesota. During his first interview as a Lion, he felt disrespected by Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer by just calling him a “good” player. With Flowers out, the Lions need Griffen to step up and after seeing the energy and passion I feel sorry for whoever gets in his way. (Sorry Riley Rieff).

Division games are always hard to predict because the players always come out with a little more fire. As long as the Lions have learned from their mistakes, play clean football, and here to the key concepts in this week’s Honolulu Blueprint, they should have a good shot to pull off the upset against their division foe.

Matthew Stafford and the Lions QB options for the Week 9 game vs. Vikings

Stafford could still play but there are other options too

We still don’t know who will be under center for the Detroit Lions when the team takes the field in Week 9 in Minnesota in a key NFC North game against the Vikings. Matthew Stafford’s appearance on the Lions’ reserve/COVID-19 list complicates the entire scenario.

There is a way for Stafford to still be able to play. All indications are Stafford himself did not test positive, including an Instagram story post from Kelly Stafford. He was instead in close contact with someone who did test positive.

That contact happened on Monday. NFL protocols require five days of negative tests to clear the reserve/COVID-19 list. Stafford can hit that mark if he tests negative every day, starting with Wednesday’s test. If he has passed all tests up to Sunday, Stafford will fly on a private jet to Minnesota and get his final test there.

Stafford cannot practice with the team or sit in on meetings other than via teleconferencing while he’s on the reserve list.

If Stafford cannot get clearance to play, Chase Daniel will get the starting nod. Daniel has yet to play for the Lions after signing as a free agent this offseason. The former Bears backup has started five games in his 11-year career, including a win over the Lions in 2018 with Chicago. He led the Bears to a 16-6 victory over the Vikings in Week 4 last season after starter Mitchell Trubisky left during the opening drive after fumbling.

David Blough is the only other QB on the Lions roster. He started the final five games last season after both Stafford and Jeff Driskel were injured and placed on I.R. The Lions lost all five games Blough started.

Stylistically, Blough is more capable of running the Darrell Bevell offense that Stafford executes. He has a stronger arm and has proven more willing to try to fit the ball into tight windows. Daniel is more of a rhythm-based, cautious passer who often slides around to get better throwing angles.

Whoever is under center will not have top WR Kenny Golladay to target. Golladay is out with a hip injury.

Detroit Lions Week 8 rookie report: Jeff Okudah to start again

Examining the Detroit Lions rookie roles in their Week 8 matchup with the Indianapolis Colts.

As the season has progressed, the rookies of the Detroit Lions have seen their roles increase and the Lions are hosting the Indianapolis Colts this week with the hopes of coming out of this game with a winning record.

Here’s what to expect from the Lions’ rookies this week:

CB Jeff Okudah

With Desmond Trufant once again ruled out, Okudah will be the starter alongside Amani Oruwariye on the outside, with Justin Coleman — who was just activated from IR — starting in the slot.

The Colts’ passing game has been on the rise throughout the year, and with the return of their second-round pick Michael Pittman, the Lions cornerback group will have a tough assignment waiting for them.

RB D’Andre Swift

The Colts have a stout run defense, which does not bode well for the rookie D’Andre Swift.

Indianapolis has allowed an average of just 88 rushing yards per game in 2020, with the lowest being a mere 28 yards. To make matters worse for Swift, they have only allowed about 30 receiving yards by running backs per game.

Swift, who is the most skilled receiver in the Lions backfield, will have to overcome a lot against Indianapolis and their Top-5 defense.

OL Jonah Jackson and Logan Stenberg

Jackson’s role as the starting left guard has been written in pen for most of the season, but injuries on the offensive line might change that up this week.

Left tackle Taylor Decker is listed as questionable for this game, and if he’s out, the Lions will have some reshuffling to do along the line. Decker’s absence would mean that either Tyrell Crosby or Halapoulivaati Vaitai would fill that role. That would mean that Jackson will potentially slide over to right guard and Joe Dahl or Oday Aboushi would fill in on the left side.

If Decker is good to go, expect Jackson to retain his role as the starting left guard.

Stenberg is still developing and has not appeared in a game yet this season. Even with the potential shakeup on the offensive line, he may still end up as an inactive.

WR Quintez Cephus

Cephus is the sixth receiver on this roster, and that isn’t expected to change anytime soon. The rookie will most likely be inactive for this matchup.

DL John Penisini

Penisini might be the most pleasant surprise of this rookie class.

The front office clearly has faith in the sixth-round rookie, as his snap counts have been on the rise from week to week. Against the Falcons last week, the rookie nose tackle was on the field for nearly half of all defensive snaps.

His stat line may not show it, but the rookie has been great against the run. He’ll have a real challenge going up against Quenton Nelson and the rest of the athletic Colts offensive line.

Indianapolis’ run game has been on the decline in recent weeks, so Penisini and the Lions defense have a big opportunity to make some plays.
