Middle Tennessee vs FIU What’s Going To Happen

Just when it seemed like it was all falling apart, Middle Tennessee won two straight – including a dominant performance in the 49-21 win over Florida Atlantic – to get bowl eligible. Now it’s time to push for a stronger final game.

FIU has lost three straight after it looked like it was turning its season around, but it’s got enough of an offense to potentially make this interesting.

Maybe.

The Panther passing game has crashed, and worst of all in this there are too many turnovers. Middle Tennessee is great at taking the ball away, the defense will overcome a rough day from the secondary with three forced turnovers, and the accurate passing game will take care of everything on the other side.

Louisiana Tech vs FIU Game Preview

Why Louisiana Tech Will Win

The passing game is making things interesting.

The Bulldogs might not be winning a bunch lately, but they were able to push Rice in a shootout loss thanks to five touchdown passes, and they lost to North Texas after cranking out well over 400 yards through the air.

FIU might be having a little more success overall, but it’s struggling in the secondary allowing 580 passing yards combined over the last two weeks to UTSA and Charlotte.

FIU might be 3-4, but it’s still one of the worst teams in the country on third downs – on both sides of the ball – there are too many misfires when the offense has scoring chances, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why FIU Will Win

Can we give Mike MacIntyre a little bit of Coach of the Year recognition?

FIU is a total gut job of a team coming into the season, but it has three wins, it’s more competitive, and it starts with an offense that’s able to find enough of a passing attack to matter.

That, and the defense is taking the ball away with seven turnovers forced over the last two weeks. However, in this the job will for FIU to …

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Run, run, run.

That hasn’t been easy for the Panthers who have yet to hit 165 yards on the ground, but they get to go against the nation’s worst run defense. Everyone runs, keeps running, and doesn’t stop running. The yards on the ground will be there, but …

Competition. FIU beat Bryant, New Mexico State, and a Charlotte defense that gives up 500 yards bruising its teeth in the morning.

Louisiana Tech might be having a rougher run, but it also dealt with Clemson, Missouri, a good South Alabama team on the road and a dangerous North Texas squad.

FIU will run well, but the Bulldogs will be better though the air.

BYU vs East Carolina Game Preview

Why East Carolina Will Win

So where has it all gone wrong for BYU?

The excitement was high going into the season that this might be a special run, but it all fell apart over the last three weeks with the offense sputtering against Notre Dame and Liberty, and the defense a stunning no show against those two and Arkansas, too.

The East Carolina offense works.

Even when it only scored nine points in the loss to Tulane, the passing game wasn’t all that bad. There’s a good enough ground game to keep feeding the ball against a Cougar defensive front that’s getting ripped apart – it’s allowing over 200 yards in each of the last four games.

If that works, the passing attach should fire away at will – the BYU pass defense is allowing everyone to hit their midrange throws.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why BYU Will Win

This is just the second true road game of the year for East Carolina – it lost the first one to Tulane, and what was supposed to be the second one turned into a neutral site date with USF thanks to the Hurricane Ian.

Yeah, BYU is having a whole lot of problems, but it’s not turning it over, the passing game has the talent to be efficient, and East Carolina gives up a ton of yards through the air.

And home field should matter.

It didn’t against Arkansas a few weeks ago, but that’s Arkansas. Going to Provo is tough, and again, not having other road games should be a problem when dealing with this environment.

BYU could use the energy boost.

College Game Previews, Predictions

What’s Going To Happen

East Carolina should pose a whole slew of problems for the BYU defense.

The Cougars don’t have a pass rush, they’re totally miserable at coming up with third down stops, and East Carolina is the best team in the American Athletic Conference at connecting on its third down chances.

But really, can the Pirates handle the always nasty road test BYU is for almost everyone?

They can, but the secondary won’t hold up.

It seems like this keeps being said every week, but BYU is way overdue to get the passing game rolling again.

The yards were there against Arkansas, but everything fell flat against Liberty and there wasn’t anything happening against Notre Dame.

East Carolina’s pass defense should be the cure for that in an entertaining game.

FIU vs Charlotte Game Preview

Why FIU Will Win

If there was ever a time the offense was going to work, this would be it.

Charlotte’s defense is the worst in the country, and it’s not all that close. The D is miserable against teams that can throw, worse against the run, and there aren’t enough takeaways or big plays to make up for it.

FIU might be struggling – to be nice about it – but there’s a decent passing game that can move the chains a little bit, and the ground game should hit five yards per carry.

FIU is 2-0 when throwing a touchdown pass and 0-4 when it doesn’t. Charlotte has allowed a TD pass in every game and 17 on the year, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Charlotte Will Win

If there was ever a time the defense was going to work, this would be it.

FIU’s offense isn’t the worst in America, but it hasn’t been able to push past 12 points against anyone but Bryant from the FCS and New Mexico State in a 21-7 win.

No, the 49er defense isn’t anything great, but the offense is able to wing it around enough to push the Panther secondary, the running game has hit 100 yards in three of the last four games, and the team has at least been competitive in the various losses. But …

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

It’s the moveable object vs the stoppable force.

Turnovers will matter, and Charlotte is giving them up, but FIU isn’t taking it away.

The FIU offense will work enough to keep things moving, but it’ll still struggle to score consistently. The defense will keep Charlotte from going off, but the O will stall enough to not be able to pull this off even with several good chances in the second half.

North Texas vs UTSA Game Preview

Why North Texas Will Win

The Mean Green running game is going off.

The combination of Ayo Adeyi, Oscar Adaway, and Ikaika Ragsdale are ripping off yards in bunches with 300 rushing yards in the win over Florida Atlantic and 475 in the 47-27 win over Louisiana Tech.

The passing game works, too, for the No. 1 offense in the league averaging over 500 yards per pop, and now it all gets to go against a UTSA defense that’s fine, but gives up 4.5 yards per carry.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why UTSA Will Win

UTSA is more than happy to keep up the pace.

Frank Harris and the Roadrunner offense might not be running like North Texas is, but the overall O isn’t far behind in production with the ability to bomb away on the Mean Green D.

North Texas is playing better defense than it has in the recent past, but it’s still getting gouged especially through the air.

UTSA lost to Houston and Texas – it’s getting by everyone else. It’s used to playing tight games, and it’s more than happy to make this a shootout at home.

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Get ready to have some fun.

Both offense will trade big shots, there will be plenty of wild swings, and UTSA will come through by being a bit more consistent on third downs to keep things moving.

North Texas will get its yards in, but the other side won’t stop the Roadrunners.

UTSA vs FIU Game Preview

Why UTSA Will Win

As long as the Roadrunners don’t have any turnover issues they should have this without much of a problem.

The offense is balanced when it has to be, Frank Harris and the passing game are rock solid, and it shouldn’t take too many points to put this away against a FIU offense that doesn’t put points on the board.

The Panthers are able to throw it a bit, but they don’t keep the chains moving, there’s absolutely no downfield passing, and they aren’t able to take advantage of opportunities when they get them.

FIU’s defense hasn’t come up with a takeaway in the last two games, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why FIU Will Win

UTSA can be a little loose at times.

It turned the ball over five times in a two-game span, there was a penalty problem early in the year, and FIU will attack up front to at least apply a little pressure.

For all of the good things the Roadrunners do, they don’t do much to come up with third down stops and it’s possible to throw on this group – FIU has to keep pressing with the midrange throws.

Granted, playing New Mexico State and UConn isn’t a big deal, but the Panther secondary held up well.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

UTSA will methodically get the offense going right away with two first quarter touchdown drives, and everything will fall into place from there.

FIU will get over 200 yards through the air, but it’ll stall on too many early drives and will buckle against the run as the game goes on.

UTSA’s defense will give up a few points in the second half, but it’ll have this well in hand.

UConn vs FIU Game Preview

Why UConn Will Win

UConn won a real live game against a real live team?

Fresno State might not be the team everyone thought it would be, and it was missing QB Jake Haener, but whatever – the Huskies were missing some key parts, too, and still won 19-14.

Under new head coach Jim Mora Jr. the running game has been solid, the defense was brilliant, and overall the program is improving.

FIU doesn’t come up with downfield pass plays, the run defense isn’t anything great, but …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why FIU Will Win

Look at FIU getting to 2-2?

The Panthers might be having problems defensively overall, but they pitched a gem in the stunning 21-7 win over New Mexico State.

The lines are having problems and there wasn’t any running game until last week, but new head coach Mike MacIntyre is starting to slowly make things happen. As long as there isn’t a turnover problem and if the defense can hold down the UConn ground game, it has a shot.

However …

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

UConn will run the ball.

FIU got by Bryant and New Mexico State when the run D worked, got obliterated by Texas State and WKU when it didn’t. UConn will come up with 200 yards on the ground on the way to the program’s first two-game winning streak since 2017.

Florida International vs New Mexico State Game Preview

Why Florida International Will Win

Is there anything positive coming off a 73-0 loss to Western Kentucky?

The Panthers haven’t been bad overall in pass protection, and before last week they were getting just enough of a passing game to get going.

More than anything else, they’ve got to force takeaways to give the offense easy chances. They got two in each of the first two games and one against the Hilltoppers, and New Mexico State will have interception issues at times.

However …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 4

Why New Mexico State Will Win

Florida International is having a nightmare of a time getting the offense working.

The scoring defense is the worst in the nation allowing over 50 points per game after the WKU debacle, and the O isn’t in place to keep up any sort of pace.

The running game isn’t tearing off big runs, and there isn’t any downfield passing attack. New Mexico State finally got the ground game going like head coach Jerry Kill would like, and the success from the 45-26 win over Hawaii should continue.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

The Aggies might not get the 326 yards on the ground like they did against the Rainbow Warriors, but they should be able to roll without too much of a problem.

As long as the passing attack doesn’t give up a slew of picks, the program will have its first two game winning streak since late 2019.

FIU vs WKU Game Preview

Why FIU Will Win

Can the Panthers start to get the offense moving consistently?

They’ve only played two games and had two weeks off since sputtering a 41-12 loss to Texas State. The running game isn’t going to do much, but can the passing attack push the Hilltopper secondary?

WKU couldn’t stop Indiana from coming through late in the wild 33-30 Hoosier win, and Hawaii – who isn’t throwing on anyone – threw for 266 yards. FIU has to be better on both sides of the ball on third downs, but push for 310 yards like it came up with against Bryant, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why WKU Will Win

WKU isn’t Bryant.

No, the passing game isn’t working like last year’s version, but it’s averaging almost 300 yards every time out, FIU doesn’t have any running game to fall back on if the air attack isn’t working, and there’s no Panther downfield passing attack.

The Hilltoppers defense came up with six takeaways against Hawaii – five of them picks – and 11 on the year. They should be able to get to the FIU quarterbacks early on, and …

What’s Going To Happen

The Hilltopper line should neutralize the FIU pass rush.

WKU QB Austin Reed will throw at least one pick, but he’ll also hit 70% of his passes as the team gets over the heartbreak in Bloomington with an easy win that should be over by halftime.

The Panthers won’t have enough offense to keep up, and the defense will have a hard time getting off the field.

FIU vs Texas State Game Preview

Why FIU Will Win

Was that the spark the program needed?

It took an overtime to get by Bryant in a 38-37 thriller, but in the first game under new head coach Mike MacIntyre the offense found a passing game with Grayson James hitting four touchdown throws and the two point conversion for the win.

Nevada is almost totally starting over and doesn’t have a passing game, but it was able to roll up 38 points on Texas State in a 24-point win thanks to a defense that lived behind the line and held the ground game to -12 yards.

Bobcat QB Layne Hatcher didn’t have any room to move, but …

Texas State has way too much offense.

It didn’t show it against the Wolf Pack, but the passing game will work fast, it should be able to hit at least the 349 yards that Bryant came up with, and there will be a running game this week.

FIU is improved, but it’s going to be a long, long road back to respectability. Texas State will be far better and far sharper overall than it was last week in Reno.

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Texas State will get up fast, and the FIU offense that rallied back with 24 fourth quarter points last week won’t get the same production this time around.

The Bobcats aren’t going to turn it over four times and get hit with ten flags like they did last week.
