CFN in 60 Video: Clemson Tigers Preview
[jwplayer NJ1kg6i1]

2020 Preseason CFN ACC Offensive Player of the Year

QB Trevor Lawrence, Jr. Clemson
He was the No. 1, superstar, can’t-miss, this-is-the-franchise-guy-who-might-possibly-be-better-than-Deshuan-Watson recruit for the program in 2018, and in his time all he’s been able to do is lead the team to two ACC championships, two national title appearances, one national championship, and with a fairly decent 29-1 record in the 30 games he has been a part of.

And now, he’s embracing the role of college football legend, Face of the Franchise, and all-around leader to a grander scale both on and off the field. Thanks to the silly rules that make a player wait for three years after high school to be eligible for the NFL Draft, he’s still around for at least one more year.

Enjoy.

2020 Preseason CFN ACC Defensive Player of the Year

DE Gregory Rousseau, Soph. Miami
It’s putting way too much unfair pressure on anyone to potentially be another Chase Young, but when it comes to next level pass rushers and college stars who can get into the backfield – and the ACC has a whole lot of them this year – you’re not crazy putting Rousseau into the conversation for a top three overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Banged up as a freshman, he busted out last season with 54 tackles, with 15.5 sacks and 19.5 tackles for loss – by the way, Young finished with 46 sacks with 16.5 sacks and 21 tackles for loss – as one of the nation’s top and steadiest producers. And now he has Temple transfer Quincy Roche on the other side to take the heat off.

No one knows what’s going to happen to the 2020 college football season. We’ll take a general look at where each team stands – doing it without spring ball to go by – while crossing our fingers that we’ll all have some well-deserved fun this fall. Hoping you and yours are safe and healthy.

5. College Football News Preview 2020: Pitt Panthers Offense 3 Things To Know

Thank you, defense. Pitt scored the fewest points per game since the 1996 team that went 4-7, and yet it tied for the most games won in a season since 2009.

Under offensive coordinator Mark Whipple – the former UMass head coach – the offense didn’t have the same rushing spark of previous seasons, the passing game stalled a bit too often, and scoring was like pulling teeth at times – the team failed to score more than 35 in any game and scored more than 20 just three times.

But the change to more of a passing game did work – the air attack was better.

The blocking wasn’t a total disaster, but it wasn’t all that great. That might change this year with a veteran unit that could be sneaky good with all five starters expected back around all-star center Jimmy Morrissey and guard Bryce Hargrove.

CFN in 60 Video: Pitt Panthers Preview
[jwplayer bAqueSXa]

Kenny Pickett only seems like he has been around since the Johnny Majors – sky point – era. The senior quarterback has been fine, and he threw for a lot of yards – close to 3,100 – but he only threw 13 touchdown passes with nine picks, while not doing all that much for the running game. However, he can get hot, throwing for over 300 yards five times including in three of the last four games.

He’s still the guy, but sophomore Nick Patti is a decent backup who could push for work, and Arizona State transfer Joey Yellen is coming in – even though he’s most likely in the mix for the 2021 starting job.

Leading receiver Maurice Ffrench is done, but senior Taysir Mack is a solid veteran who can be the new No. 1 guy, and there’s enough talent coming back to be okay. The addition of Florida transfer tight end Lucas Krull could be a huge help to fill the hole.

The running game went from ripping off 3,191 yards and 30 touchdowns in 2018 to 1,544 yards and 11 scores last year. V’Lique Carter transferred out, but the top three running backs return, starting with senior AJ Davis coming off a 530-yard, four score season. He’s the 215-pound pounder, while 5-8, 175-pound sophomore Vincent Davis provides a little more splash after leading the team with five rushing scores.

NFL Draft 2020: ACC

The ACC and the NFL Draft haven’t had a great relationship over the last several years when it comes to sending bulk talent to the next level, but it has been fantastic in the first round.

Clemson has done its part, and Florida State has been a decent feeder from time to time, but last year it was Duke’s Daniel Jones who made the most noise at the sixth overall pick. In all, seven ACC players were selected on Day One last year, and just three of them were from Clemson.

Six were selected early in 2018 – highlighted by Lamar Jackson being picked at the 32 by Baltimore – and four went in the first round in 2017.

The league has done okay to showcase itself, but this year should be a bit of an issue.

CFN in 60: 2020 Top Five Overall Prospects
[jwplayer 4pb0NsqJ-boEY74VG]

The line for the total ACC players drafted in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft is just 3.5.

The last time the ACC had fewer than four players selected early was 2003, but that was the last year Miami was in the Big East. If you want to count all the current ACC programs, it’s been a long, long time since there weren’t been four players picked in the first.

This year, start with the obvious. Clemson LB Isaiah Simmons will likely go in the top five – top ten, at worst – and Louisville’s Mekhi Becton will be one of the first offensive tackles off the board.

And then it all dries up in a huge hurry.

Can Clemson CB AJ Terrell find his way in? That’s not a given.

Will Tiger WR Tee Higgins make it into the first round? Ehhhhhh, it’s possible, but hardly a sure thing. Terrell has a better shot than Higgins.

So set the bar at three. Outside of Higgins, there isn’t another ACC player who’ll likely be sniffing the top 32. Florida State RB Cam Akers and Virginia CB Bryce Hall are some of the only other ACC players who’ll be in the mix for the second round, much less the first.

So …

[lawrence-related id=434346]

How Many ACC Players Will Be Drafted In the First Round?

It’s going to be a historically weak first round for the ACC.

With Miami not holding up its end of the bargain, and with Florida State a bit down in the NFL talent department, it’s up to Clemson to send its superstars to the next level, but the tsunami is coming in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Do you feel like sticking with the side of history and go with the hope that Higgins is a first rounder? He’s got top 32 talent, and it’s not a crazy call. Best of all, the over is where all the value is. The ACC will definitely get three players drafted in the first round, but …

That’s it. Expect the under on the 3.5.

Prediction: Under

ACC Football Basketball School Rankings: Hoops and Helmets 2019-2020

Which ACC schools had the best and worst years in the two major sports – football and men’s basketball?

Which ACC schools had the best and worst years in the two major sports – football and men’s basketball? Which fan bases got the glory, and which ones didn’t have any fun?

Contact @PeteFiutak

On the field and court – whose fans had the most fun?

Of course every school has sports outside of the big two that matter and generate revenue, but when it comes to what athletic departments need, it’s really all about college football and men’s basketball.

Which ACC schools had the best and worst seasons?

Here’s how these rankings work.

1) The top-ranked schools with teams that went to a bowl game and would’ve played in the NCAA Tournament.

2) The next group had stronger football seasons and were okay in basketball. The superstar basketball schools get credit – that’s obviously a huge deal in the ACC – but football is the bigger revenue generator.

3) One or the other. Usually there’s a disparity with one good season in one sport an a clunker in the other. It’s sort of a catch-all before …

4) The disasters. No bowl game, there wouldn’t have been a trip to the NCAA Tournament, no fun.

The worst-to-best ACC schools in 2019-2020 in college football and college basketball …

ACC Hoops and Helmets: Losers In Both Sports

Florida State (21-4) vs. Pitt (15-11) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Pitt Will Win

The Panthers did it before. They opened up the season with a 63-61 win over the Seminoles, doing just a wee bit better from three and on the boards to pull it off.

That might have been back in November, but this is still a good team at coming up with takeaways and it’s good at coming up with just enough blocks to clamp down defensively in key spots.

FSU comes up with a slew of big runs on steals and easy points, but Pitt doesn’t give the ball away enough to let that happen. However …

Why Florida State Will Win

FSU leads the ACC in steals and turnover margin – it’s fantastic at making teams that don’t screw up, screw up.

It doesn’t take a lot of threes because it doesn’t need to, but it can hit from the outside. More importantly against Pitt, FSU is solid on the boards – especially on the offensive side. Defensively, the rebounding is just fine, and that’s good enough against a Panther team that can’t shoot – hitting just 41% from the field.

What’s Going To Happen

Florida State can hit from the outside, and Pitt can’t. Throw that in with the ability to generate easy points off of steals, and a good game will get a bit out of hand with a big second half run.

Boston College (5-6) vs. Pitt (7-4) Game Preview

If want in on this week’s games, sign up with BetMGM

Why Boston College Will Win

What happens to the Pitt running game?

A terror last year that led the way to an appearance in the ACC Championship, the Panther ground attack is struggling to provide a spark.

It has yet to hit the 200-yard mark, it’s averaging under 3.6 yards per carry, and it’s not able to pound into the end zone. The Panthers have nine rushing scores on the year – three came against North Carolina.

On the other side, AJ Dillon was bottled up in the blowout loss to Notre Dame, but before that he was a 100-yard machine, hitting the mark in seven of his previous eight games. With bowl eligibility on the line, he’s about to be his 35-carry workhorse self. However …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Pitt Will Win

The Panther run defense has been a rock.

The secondary hasn’t been bad, but Pitt is destroying ground attacks, is great at getting into the backfield, and has only allowed more than 140 yards to Penn State. Six times this season the Panthers have held teams to under 100 yards.

But that’s not BC’s real issue here.

The Eagle secondary has been roasted over the second half of the season, allowing 19 touchdown passes with just two picks over the last seven games. This group is giving up big plays, it’s getting dinked-and-dunked on, and it’s having hard times coming up with big stops in key moments.

No, there’s no Pitt running game, and Kenny Pickett isn’t Joe Burrow, but the Panthers have and effective enough passing attack in spurts to complement what the defense does.

What’s Going To Happen

Boston College can still potentially get a bowl game with a loss, but it’ll need a slew of teams to fail to hit the six-win mark, so …

It needs to win this to go bowling.

That’s not happening. Pitt’s run defense will be too tough, the BC offense will fizzle too often, and it’ll be a good bounce back win for the Panthers after a shutout loss to Virginia Tech.

Why Pitt Will Win

So here’s the deal. If Virginia Tech wins this game, next week’s showdown against Virginia is the for the ACC Coastal title. But if Pitt wins, it’s going back to the ACC championship if it beats Boston College next week and the Hokies get by the Cavaliers.

First, the Panthers have to take care of business with a defense that’s been every bit as nasty at times as any in the ACC.

Pitt has the nation’s best pass rush – coming though time and again with five sacks to stop North Carolina in last week’s overtime thriller. The Virginia Tech offensive line is fine, but it’s not a killer, and it’s not going to blast away enough for the running game to take over.

To pull this off, the Hokies have to be solid at moving the chains, getting past the swarming rush, and hit the third down plays. Pitt, though, has been excellent at coming up with the key stops – again, to beat this into the ground – because it’s getting to the quarterback.

The Hokies have rushed for 200 yards or more in four of their last five games. So far this year they’re 1-3 when they’re under 140 yards – struggling way too much in the win over a miserable Old Dominion team – and 6-0 when they’re over.

How many times this season has Pitt allowed more than 140 yards?

Once. To Penn State. No one else has been able to average more than four yards per carry.

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Virginia Tech Will Win

Virginia Tech has a pass rush, too.

The Hokies are getting enough out of their defense to hold on in a few shootouts, and come up big lately in big moments against everyone but Notre Dame.

The pressure in the backfield is getting the job done for a run defense that’s holding its own, and unlike last year, Pitt doesn’t have the ground attack good enough to take over.

Pitt is able to survive on just enough of passing attack to get by at times – Kenny Pickett threw for 359 yards against UNC – but it’s not a consistent attack. Virginia Tech is a bit better equipped to handle the Pitt pass rush than the other way around.

Hendon Hooker has the mobility and the accuracy to keep on pushing the ball down the field when everything is swarming around him. The freshman quarterback has yet to throw an interception in his five games of major work, he’s averaging over ten yards per pass, and he’s taking off just enough to make defenses worry.

What’s Going To Happen

Pitt’s been playing with fire just a wee bit.

Since getting blasted by Virginia in the opener, seven of Pitt’s last nine games have been decided by seven points or fewer, and the other two were decided by ten points.

This team knows how to handle itself in tight spots, but in Virginia Tech’s final home game of the year, it’s about to dial up something special.

The defense has been fantastic over the last three weeks – it all started right after the 43-41 win over North Carolina – and it’s going to be every bit as effective up front as Pitt’s D.

The difference? The Hokies will run just enough to be okay. Pitt won’t be able to get its running attack going at all.
