Penn State vs Indiana Game Preview

Why Penn State Will Win

How fast can Penn State refocus?

Yes, it lost to Michigan, and yes, it gave Ohio State a run before succumbing late in the 44-31 loss, but a New Year’s Six bowl game is still on the table by winning out against Maryland, Rutgers, Michigan State, and by starting against the Hoosiers.

There’s not going to be anything on the ground by an Indiana offense that needs to throw well to have a shot. Penn State will allow over 200 passing yards, but it’ll do a ton of bending without a lot of breaking.

Michigan’s JJ McCarthy and Ohio State’s CJ Stroud both hit over 70% of their passes. Indiana came close against Maryland, but it has yet to get to that mark. It’s going to throw, but it won’t be sharp enough.

However …

Breaking down the CFP Top 25 rankings

Why Indiana Will Win

Just how fired up will Penn State be?

Again, there are plenty of big things on the table, but beating Ohio State was going to be the big moment for the season, it was there for the taking, and it didn’t happen.

Indiana has to get firing. The passing attack has to move fast, keep the Nittany Lions on their heels, and get off to a hot start.

Penn State’s offense isn’t great on third downs, the D doesn’t take the ball away enough lately, and the O can’t make mistakes – it turned it over four times against Ohio State.

But …

Schedules, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Indiana’s offense will never be on the field.

Penn State isn’t big on ball control, but it’ll look like Illinois at times with a good balance and enough grinding offensive production to take control as the game goes on.

Indiana is dead last in the nation in time of possession, and it’ll show.

Ohio State vs Penn State Game Preview

Why Ohio State Will Win

How do you know when your team is really, really good? You don’t play your best game and you still win easily.

Ohio State’s offense struggled against Iowa – that’s no big deal. Those guys on the other side are on scholarship, too – the Hawkeye defense is among the best in the country.

The Buckeye running game was stuffed, CJ Stroud didn’t throw for 300 yards, and it was still a 54-10 win.

Coming up with six takeaways certainly helped the cause.

Granted, Iowa’s offense is miserable. Michigan State, Wisconsin, Rutgers, Notre Dame – all of the big games for the Buckeyes were against teams with mediocre attacks.

Whatever – if you’re second in the nation in total defense at this point in the season, you’re doing something right. Ohio State is doing just about everything right.

Penn State might have blown out Minnesota, but the Gophers were without QB Tanner Morgan, the Michigan loss got out of hand, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why Penn State Will Win

Minnesota was a more dangerous team than the 45-17 loss to the Nittany Lions might have seemed.

No, the Gophers didn’t have their veteran starting quarterback, but Penn State didn’t let the great ground game get going, the passing attack clicked, and with some respect given to the win over Auburn, it was the team’s best performance of the year at just the right time.

The secondary has the talent to hang with Ohio State’s NFL receiving corps, the backfield has the combination of speed at running back and experience with quarterback Sean Clifford to handle the moment, and …

It’s going to take something special.

+7 on the year in turnover margin, the Nittany Lions have to force mistakes, they have to win the special teams battle, and …

– Game Previews, Predictions CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

There isn’t enough of a consistent Penn State pass rush to bother Stroud.

Michigan was able to beat the Nittany Lions by grinding it out, and eventually the dam broke with 25 unanswered Wolverine points in the second half. That will be a little bit like this.

The energy of the crowd and the excitement of the moment will be enough to carry Penn State in the first half, and then bang, bang, bang – Stroud and the Buckeyes will strike quickly and take over.

The final score will look worse than the actual game will be.

Minnesota vs Penn State Game Preview

Why Minnesota Will Win

The Gophers need to find their pounding groove again.

They’ve got the beef up front, the tremendous backs, and the veteran quarterback to make it all go, but those backs – primarily Mohamed Ibrahim – weren’t healthy in the loss to Purdue, and it was the passing game that let the team down in the loss to Illinois.

Penn State hadn’t played anyone who could run. Auburn could sort of run, but not really. Michigan can run, and it did over and over again as it wore down the Nittany Lions with 418 rushing yards in the 41-17 win.

Even after the two losses and all of the problems, Minnesota still leads the nation in third down conversions and third down stops. It’s still the best in the nation at avoiding penalties, it’s the best in the Big Ten at controlling the clock, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 7

Why Penn State Will Win

Minnesota was able to amass those lofty stats by dominating a slew of mediocre teams.

It’s not the Gophers’ fault that Colorado is bad at college football this year or that Michigan State couldn’t seem to do anything right, but they got to 4-0 without beating a team that will – mostly likely – finish with a winning record.

Purdue and Illinois were the first real tests, and Minnesota failed.

Penn State might have problems on third downs against this D, but the other side of the ball should hold up just fine, especially against the Gopher passing attack.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

Which Minnesota team will show up?

Will it be the one that couldn’t do anything wrong in East Lansing in the dominant win over Michigan State, or will it be the one that couldn’t get going in Champaign in the frustrating loss to Illinois?

Besides those being the games against the two best teams on the slate so far, there was one other problem – the turnovers. Minnesota turned it over three times in the first four games and six times – all interceptions – in the last two.

Penn State will struggle, and it’ll get hammered on for the second week in a row. A decent offensive balance and +2 turnover margin will be the difference.

Penn State vs Michigan Game Preview

Why Penn State Will Win

The offense has found a nice groove.

Amazingly balanced, the offense has a good combination of dangerous running backs, QB Sean Clifford, and a line that’s doing a solid job of keeping defenses out of the backfield. The attack might not be a thrill a minute, but it’s extremely effective.

Forget the sloppy, rain-soaked win over Northwestern when no one could hang on to the ball – Penn State gave it up five times in the 17-7 uggo – the offense doesn’t have a turnover issue. As long as the offense can keep the mistakes to a bare minimum, the other side should take over.

The Penn State run defense has been a brick wall allowing fewer than 80 yards per game. Stop Michigan from running, pressure JJ McCarthy, and …

NFL Expert Picks, Week 6

Why Michigan Will Win

Yeah, the Penn State run defense has been great. That’s what happens when you don’t face anyone who can run.

Auburn has good backs, but the offense isn’t working against anyone. Ohio is throwing it a gajillion times per game, and Purdue chooses to travel by air. Of course Penn State has talent up front to hold up, but it hasn’t dealt with anyone who can pound away.

Blake Corum and the rushing attack should be able to grind – even if the explosive runs aren’t there – and McCarthy is settling in hitting 76% of his throws over the last two games.

The Michigan defense has been better than Penn State’s, the pass rush has been stronger, and the offense is much, much stronger on third downs. For all of the good things Penn State does, it’s only 34% on third down conversions.

– Schedules, Previews CollegeNFL

What’s Going To Happen

How do you know Michigan is good? It was awful against Indiana – ten penalties, a turnover, struggles in key moments early – and still won 31-10.

It might have been tough to put away Maryland, and the Indiana win was tougher than it should’ve been, but it’s been building to this.

Penn State has a ton of talent, athleticism, and parts to make this a fight throughout. Michigan will stall too often after the Nittany Lions get up early, but slow and steady will win the race.

The Penn State attack will struggle late, McCarthy will come up with one terrific drive to finally give the home side the lead, and Clifford’s last two passes will misfire to close out a tense thriller.
