All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Stanford (1-1) vs Vanderbilt (1-1) Game Preview

Why Stanford Will Win

Apparently, losing to Stanford is a problem.

The Cardinal not only beat USC, it ended the Clay Helton era with the 42-28 win.

Now that’s what this team was supposed to do, and not clunk like it did in the loss to Kansas State in the opener.

Tanner McKee took over the quarterbacking duties and got the offense going, throwing for over ten yards per pass with an effective 234-yard day. The running game actually worked – fine, so there was just the one big run – and the O line stepped up its game in a big, big way.

Vanderbilt might have beaten Colorado State, but the offense is still a work in progress, there’s no downfield passing game, and scoring is like pulling teeth. Get up fast, and Stanford should have this without too much of a problem.

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

How much will the fish-out-of-water thing matter for the team from Palo Alto?

It’s a night game, so the time change aspect doesn’t matter, but it’s an interesting road game on a schedule full of all Power Five teams.

It might not have been a scintillating performance by the Commodores against Colorado State, but … baby steps. It was a much-needed moment of fun after the disastrous loss to East Tennessee State to start the season, with QB Ken Seals playing well, the defense coming up with key stops, and … it was a win.

It might just be the confidence boost to take the pressure off as the Clark Lea era just gets started.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

The Vanderbilt running game still didn’t work against Colorado State.

Overall, the Rams came up with over 100 more yards than the Commodores, but they didn’t control the clock, got flagged way too many times, and they couldn’t get the big plays to take over the game. Stanford won’t have that problem.

The Cardinal will keep the downfield passing game going, and the defense will take care of the rest against the punchless Vandy O.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

UCLA (2-0) vs Fresno State (2-1) Game Preview

Why Fresno State Will Win

The offense is working.

After a rough first season under head coach Kalen DeBoer, the passing game has been fantastic, the defense has been vastly improved, and the experience is coming through.

Granted, beating UConn and Cal Poly is nothing special, but the Bulldogs did a better job against Oregon than Ohio State did.

Jake Haener has been terrific – hitting 74% of his throws with eight touchdown passes and no picks – playing like the star recruit he once was for Washington, but it’s the other side that’s been the difference.

Fresno State is doing a wonderful job of getting into the backfield, the run D held Oregon to 186 yards – and 358 yards of total offense – and now it gets a UCLA team that might be rested, but could’ve lost a bit of momentum after a fantastic start to the season.

And maybe the Bruin focus is a wee bit on the Pac-12 opener at Stanford next week.

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why UCLA Will Win

What more could you possibly ask for out of a start?

In came a solid Mountain West team to kick things off, and the Bruins pounded through Hawaii 44-10. Even better was the performance in the national spotlight win over LSU.

UCLA has been tough, efficient, and nasty on the lines, allowing just 75 rushing yards in the first two games while pounding away with a good enough ground attack to take control so far.

There’s nothing finesse about this team in the wonderful blue uniforms in the Chip Kelly offense. However …

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

For all of the good things UCLA is doing, the pass protection has been a bit lacking. Fresno State has to keep the pressure on Dorian Thompson-Robinson, and it has to keep pressing with a passing game that’s going to be fearless and relentless.

The rest will help the Bruins, and they’re not going to let up after their big start. It’s going to take a half to get everything rolling, though.

Fresno State will look strong in the loss, with a few chances late to make the Bruins fight to get out alive.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Arizona State (2-0) vs BYU (2-0) Game Preview

Why Arizona State Will Win

The team has gone through its warm-ups, and now it’s time to start the season.

Southern Utah and UNLV were but mere blips along the way to get ready for this, and then the Pac-12 season to kick in.

QB Jayden Daniels has been sharp – even if the franchise QB is running a bit much, taking off for 125 yards in the 37-10 win over UNLV – the ground game is working, and moving the chains hasn’t been any sort of a problem.

Again, it’s not like the competition has been anything to get fired up about, but the defense has been great, the pass rush is there, and again, the two games were good to get all the parts up to speed.

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why BYU Will Win

No, this might not be the BYU of last year – not having the current New York Jet starting quarterback is a part of that – but if you’re beating a Utah team that’s good enough to win the Pac-12 South, you’re doing something right.

Give the Cougars credit. If the beef against the 2020 version was that they didn’t play any Power Five programs – certainly not their fault – then starting 2-0 against the Pac-12 with wins over Arizona and Utah matters.

The offense didn’t turn the ball over against Utah and did a terrific job of controlling the clock against a team that’s normally wonderful at dominating the tempo.

No one is supposed to be able to run against this Ute defensive front, and BYU averaged five yards per carry and took all the pressure off of QB Jaren Hall.

Keep control of the game, force Arizona State and Daniels to start pushing the ball down the field more, and don’t make mistakes. Do that, and BYU has this. And …

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Playing in Provo matters.

The home field advantage wasn’t a big deal for the program for a few years against the stronger teams, but everything has turned lately with that Utah game proving it.

BYU will play a tight game without screwing up, Arizona State will have to deal with a dangerous pass rush, and it’ll do a strong job of owning the time of possession battle against a team that’s been brilliant at that.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

USC (1-1) vs Washington State (1-1) Game Preview

Why USC Will Win

The talent is there – it’s just not playing well.

There’s never a good time to fire a head coach who needs to go, but two games into a season certainly doesn’t do much for a team trying to figure it all out on the fly.

It wasn’t just one bad day against Stanford that launched Clay Helton – it was the direction of the program all while UCLA appears to be ascending. There’s enough in place to turn this around fast, though, and now the pressure is essentially off.  There won’t be a weekly Helton On The Hot Seat thing.

It’ll be up to new interim head man Donte Williams to take a team full of good players and making it all work, and it starts with the passing game going off.

Kedon Slovis hasn’t been bad, and this week he should throw at will against a Washington State defense that doesn’t have a pass rush and struggled in its first two games. Once the O gets going, everything else should fall into place.

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Washington State Will Win

So what’s really the problem at USC?

It was able to get by San Jose State with relative ease, and chalk up the Stanford game to a bad day. However, there hasn’t been anything from the defensive line so far – it’s not getting behind the line – and there are WAY too many penalties and mistakes so far.

Wazzu has a similar problem to USC’s – the talent in place isn’t producing yet.

Turnovers aren’t an issue, and the parts are there to start doing a whole lot more to keep the chains moving, and again, USC probably won’t bring the pressure.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

USC is okay.

Washington State lost to Utah State and wasn’t great against Portland State, but the Pac-12 season starts now and there couldn’t be a better time to try pulling this off.

Instead of melting down, watch out for the Trojans to start playing looser and better. The defense will be okay, but it’s the offensive side that will quickly take over with a huge day from the passing attack.

Minnesota (1-1) vs Colorado (1-1) Game Preview

Why Minnesota Will Win

The Gophers have been outstanding on third downs.

They control the clock – holding the ball for close to 36 minutes a game so far – and they put themselves in good positions to manage their third down tries.

There might have been a struggle in the second half in the 31-26 win against Miami University last week, but they were able to go on a big late scoring drive and force a big turnover to survive. For the most part, though, they need a big drive, they get it.

On the other side, Colorado doesn’t have an efficient enough passing game to do a whole lot of damage, and the offense has struggled to get going, but …

Week 3 College Football Expert Picks

Why Colorado Will Win

It’s one thing to have offensive problems against Texas A&M – that’s a top five-caliber team with a defense full of NFL guys. Minnesota could’t get to 300 yards last week against Miami University.

The Gopher offense might be amazing on third downs, but the defense is having issues coming up with stops – Miami’s third down conversions were timely.

There’s nothing happening from the defensive front to get into the backfield with just five tackles for loss and no sacks so far. Colorado can be fine if QB Brendon Lewis isn’t under pressure.

Week 3 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Minnesota will still be able to run the ball.

Losing star Mohamed Ibrahim for the season was a huge blow, but Treyson Potts was able to handle the work, running 34 times for 178 yards and two scores against Miami University. He’s not going to have enough room to move this week.

Don’t expect a whole lot of points. Both defenses will hold up well, neither side will generate enough big plays down the field to open it up, and it’ll be like pulling teeth at times to get points on the board.

At home, Colorado’s defensive front will do just enough to get out on the right side of a close game after just missing on a massive upset over Texas A&M.

Oregon vs Ohio State Instant Reaction: 10 Thoughts On The 35-28 Duck Win

Oregon vs Ohio State Instant Reaction. 10 thoughts on upset win by the Ducks to crank up the season for the Pac-12.

Oregon vs Ohio State Instant Reaction. 10 thoughts on upset win by the Ducks to crank up the season for the Pac-12.

Oregon 35, Ohio State 28: Instant Reaction

10. The narrative will be all about the Ohio State run defense that got hammered by Minnesota last week and gave up 269 yards and over seven yards per carry against Oregon.

To be fair, Minnesota’s Mohamed Ibrahim might have been the Big Ten Player of the Year had he not suffered an Achilles heel injury, and Oregon’s CJ Verdell is a future – to go very, very generous – Alvin Kamara-like NFL starter. However …

9. Yeah, the Ohio State defense needs to be far, far better. The adjustments didn’t come quickly enough, there wasn’t any accounting for Verdell and the stretch-zone play on the outside, and now …

8. 118 points. 52 in the national title loss to Alabama last year, 31 to Minnesota, and 38 to Oregon. The 118 points are the most ever allowed by Ohio State over a three-game stretch in the history of the program, barely beating the 114 given up over a late run in 2018 and obliterating any other three games.

7. Ohio State is still very, very, very good. What gets lost in this is just how great Oregon is and was supposed to be coming into the game. The Ducks have talent, they have speed, and they have next-level guys from years of strong recruiting classes.

This shouldn’t come across as that massive a shock – Oregon has the guys. How good and how talented is this team? They won without two NFL starting defenders with Kayvon Thibodeaux and Justin Flowe out.

6. The Buckeyes got away from the running game. CJ Stroud had a strong performance with 484 yards and three touchdowns – forgetting about the rough late pick that all but sealed the game – but the coaching staff didn’t rely enough on the great offensive line.

Throwing it 54 times isn’t supposed to be how this is supposed to work with all the home-run hitting talent in the backfield. The OSU O line is outstanding, but the Buckeyes ran just 31 times for 128 yards.

Week 2 Scoreboard

5. The old man got the job done. Anthony Brown started his career at Boston College as a solid freshman in 2017, threw for over 5,000 yards, had injury problems, and left for Oregon in 2020.

He wasn’t flashy and he missed more than half of his throws, but he didn’t throw any picks, kept things moving, tossed two touchdown passes and ran for 65 yards. No, he’s not the superstar talent that other top teams have, but he knows what he’s doing. It also helped that …

4. Where was the Ohio State pass rush? Oregon was able to come up with a few sacks without Thibodeaux, but Ohio State came up with a grand total of zero sacks and one tackle for loss. One. Brown had way too much time to work – although he was at least hurried a bit late in the game – and there wasn’t any getting to Verdell and the running game before it could get going.

3. This is hardly any sort of a deathblow to Ohio State’s College Football Playoff chances. Of course the defense has to be stronger, but it’ll still be a double-digit favorite the rest of the way. The toughest remaining road game is at … Michigan? Please.

Penn State and Michigan State aren’t easy outs, but there’s no Wisconsin and no Iowa from the West. The Buckeyes might not necessarily control their own CFP destiny, but you all know how this works – win your Power Five conference, go 12-1, and the committee will like you.

2. And now it’s all there for Oregon. Like Oklahoma in 2017 – when it came into Ohio State and won 31-16, which allowed for a buffer when it lost to Texas a few weeks later – on the way to the CFP, this was the game that bought the Ducks a whole lot of breaks.

They still have to win the Pac-12 title and go at least 12-1, but now they can afford a loss to a UCLA, Washington, or Utah on the road. There’s no USC or Arizona State from the South to face, so the spotlight is on and the expectations are ramped up.

If you can beat Ohio State in Columbus without your two best defensive players, you can get through this slate

1. Absolutely nothing against Ohio State, but this really is a good thing for college football. Between UCLA’s win over LSU and this, the Pac-12 has suddenly become relevant to a nation that tends to ignore the conference that plays way too many games when people are sleeping.

Oregon matters now. UCLA matters. USC matters. The Pac-12 matters, and again, that’s a good thing for a sport that needed a little bit of a disruption from the norm.

Ohio State and Clemson lost and we’re just two weeks in. This is going to be one wild year of college football.

Michigan (1-0) vs Washington (0-1) Game Preview

Why Washington Will Win

Washington is better than that.

No, really. It is.

There’s no excuse for a team with the talent to challenge for the Pac-12 title to lose to any FCS team, but to be a wee bit fair, Montana 1) has a killer D and 2) is coached by Bobby Hauck, a fantastic head coach who’s been dominant with the program.

Yeah, whatever – you don’t lose to the FCS team 13-7.

If there’s any silver lining in that, now Washington is really, really, really, really mad – and desperate.

The O line is better than it played, the D did its job allowing under 250 yards of total Grizzly offense, and Dylan Morris is a better quarterback than he showed.

Michigan’s top WR Ronnie Bell is out for the year with a knee injury, and there’s no chance the Wolverine ground game averages close to eight yards per carry like it did against Western Michigan, but …

Week 2 College Football Expert Picks

Why Michigan Will Win

Don’t just blow off Michigan’s 47-14 performance as a victory over a MAC team.

More people than you might think thought Western Michigan was going to easily cover, if not pull off the upset.

Cade McNamara didn’t have to push himself, but he hit 9-of-11 passes for 136 yards and two scores. It’s not time to put him in the Tom Brady category quite yet, but that’s exactly what the everyone needed to see out of a Michigan quarterback.

No, the Wolverines aren’t running for 335 yards on this U-Dub D, but it will blast away and put the focus on stopping all the options in the rotation. Even with out Bell, as long as McNamara can hit the throws that are there, the O will move.

Week 1 NFL Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

This will be the Washington we all thought we were getting – if it had done what it was supposed to do against Montana.

Points and yards are going to be impossible to come by with both defenses taking over. The Washington D will be stronger than the Michigan version, but the Washington O will turn the ball over that one extra time to be the difference in a stressful, tough battle.

Utah (1-0) vs BYU (1-0) Game Preview

Why Utah Will Win

It wasn’t a perfect performance against Weber State in the 40-17 victory, but it was the type of game that might have worked a few things out.

The massive defensive front stopped up the Wildcat running game, and it’s going to be a brick wall against the BYU ground attack. The secondary allowed just over 200 yards through the air, but it wasn’t a problem.

More importantly, the new quarterback looked great. Baylor transfer Charlie Brewer threw a pick, but he was sharp overall. Throw in a good day for a ground game that needed some players to emerge, and it was what the team needed as a warm-up.

Meanwhile, BYU had to push through in a 24-16 win over a rebuilding Arizona. The Wildcats had their chances, but couldn’t capitalize late. Utah should be able to score when it gets those same shots. However …

Week 2 College Football Expert Picks

Why BYU Will Win

Utah did have its rough spots it has to prove it can get past.

There were problems against Weber State on third downs and missed on both fourth down tries, the two turnovers can’t happen in Provo, and there’s going to be pressure from the BYU defensive front to make Brewer and company press.

Cougar QB Jaren Hall isn’t Zach Wilson, but he had a strong day against Arizona and the running game was effective enough to get the win. It’ll be tougher sledding against the Utah defensive front, but the offense should be balanced enough to be in control for stretches.

Week 1 NFL Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

It’s always fun, it’s always a fight, and it’s always …

A Utah win.

At least the last nine and ten of the last 11 have gone to the Utes going back to the thriller late in the 2009 season.

BYU has the lines to hold up for stretches, but the problems will come as the game goes on. The Utah fronts will take over Brewer will outplay Hall, and even on the road in a rivalry battle it’ll be a great performance by the Pac-12er over the (likely) future Big 12er.

Oregon State (0-1) vs Hawaii (1-1) Game Preview

Why Hawaii Will Win

Oregon State couldn’t run against Purdue in the 30-21 loss. Hawaii might not have been great in the opener against UCLA, but it has the line to hold up a whole lot better as the season goes on.

The offense found its groove in a 49-35 win over Portland State, getting a great balance with a huge day from QB Chevan Cordeiro – he threw for 305 yards and three scores and ran for 66 yards – and with a good rotation from the backs.

The D had to hold up while the Vikings fired away to try getting back in the battle, but being up 28-0 early allowed the team to coast – and get past some big mistakes.

Week 2 College Football Expert Picks

Why Oregon State Will Win

Hawaii turned the ball over four times against Portland State, allowing the game to get a wee bit scarier than it should’ve been.

No, Oregon State couldn’t run against Purdue to kick things off, but the quarterback combination of Chance Nolan and Sam Noyer wasn’t bad. They didn’t throw any touchdown passes, but they managed to push the offense in the fourth quarter to at least make it interesting. Now the passing game should be sharper – Portland State threw for 400 yards – but the offense as a whole should be stronger.

The Beavers will be fine as long as they don’t make a ton of mistakes. Run on the Hawaii defensive front, keep trying it, and don’t take any big chances. Do that, assume the Rainbow Warriors will stop themselves, and capitalize on the chances.

Week 1 NFL Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

These two don’t like each other.

Actually, they didn’t like each other when Nick Rolovich was the head man at Hawaii – there was a kerfuffle over Oregon State allegedly liking Hawaii players – but this should still be spirited.

It’s been a strange, rough start for Hawaii. Losing to UCLA now doesn’t look so bad, and the Portland State could’ve been a whole lot smoother. Oregon State didn’t do what it wanted to against Purdue, but this week the offense will be more balanced and the D will once again hold up against the run.

It won’t be anything pretty, but the Beavers will take the home win in a game full of momentum swings.
