Cincinnati vs Kansas City AFC Championship Game Preview

Why Cincinnati Will Win the AFC Championship

Firepower.

Nah, Joe Burrow and JaMarr Chase aren’t going to light up the Chiefs like they did in their 34-31 win back in Week 17 – Burrow threw for almost 450 yards and Chase went off for 266 yards and three scores – but the offense has the ability to rip apart a beaten up Kansas City secondary.

The hope is for Tyann Mathieu to be back after suffering a concussion early on in the win over Buffalo, and there’s decent depth – at least brand name-wise – in the secondary, but the same crew that couldn’t handle Gabriel Davis now has to deal with Tee Higgins and Tyler Boyd.

The Chiefs were able to erase Stefan Diggs, but Josh Allen was able to buy just enough time to get the ball to the other parts. The Bengal other parts are better.

Defensively, the secondary might be getting hit hard, but it’s forcing mistakes. Patrick Mahomes won’t make the same forced throws Ryan Tannehill did in Cincinnati’s win over the Titans, but the Bengal D has forced seven takeaways – three against Tennessee – in the last three games.

It didn’t come up with any against Kansas City the first time around and still managed to win.

Yeah, the Bengal defense has to at least pressure Mahomes and make him improvise a bit. Yeah, the run defense has been great over the second half of the season and Kansas City doesn’t have to worry that much about the running backs. But …

Again, this will come down to being able to keep up the pace. The Bengals can do that just fine, and in the playoffs so far, they’ve been able to win even when they’re not bombing away for a gajillion yards.

However …

Buffalo at Kansas City Divisional Round Game Preview

Why Buffalo Will Win the AFC Divisional Round

When have you ever seen a Bill Belichick-coached team look so utterly helpless?

Buffalo went all Nick Papageorgio on the Patriots. He put a dollar in, he got a car … he put a dollar in, he got a car. Buffalo put the offense on the field, it got a touchdown. It put the offense on the field, it got a touchdown.

Seven drives, seven touchdowns, and a 27-0 lead early, a 47-10 lead late, and a 47-17 win to roll past a team that was supposed to have the defensive makeup and the tough ground game to handle the team and the cold weather elements.

Nope.

Josh Allen threw more touchdown passes (5) than incompletions (4), the running game ripped the Patriots to sheds, and the defense didn’t let the other side to a thing until the game was well over.

How good were the Buffalo lines? New England had one quarterback pressure. That’s it. No sacks, no tackles for loss. Buffalo had three sacks and hit Mac Jones five times.

Ever since the weird weather loss to the Patriots in Week 13 and the shootout loss to Tampa Bay in Week 14, everything has clicked.

The ground game has been fantastic – thank you, Devin Singletary – the defense has been a rock against the run, and now the team with the NFL’s No. 1 overall D gets a Kansas City team that couldn’t handle the Cincinnati offense in Week 17 and is questionable against teams that can throw.

However …

Tampa Bay vs Los Angeles Divisional Round Game Preview

Why Los Angeles Will Win the NFC Divisional Round

1) The Rams aren’t the Eagles, and 2) the Rams are healthy and the Buccaneers aren’t.

Los Angeles and Tampa Bay had little drama in their respective Wild Card blowout wins, but the Rams got out relatively unscathed while the already dinged Buccaneers didn’t have running backs Leonard Fournette or Ronald Jones – Fournette is still questionable for this – and might have lost star O linemen Tristan Wirfs and Ryan Jensen to ankle injuries.

The Los Angeles defensive line was just okay at getting into the backfield against Kyler Murray and an Arizona team that couldn’t get anything going, but it was fantastic against the run and generated a few sacks.

Philadelphia wasn’t able to do much of anything offensively, and the defense was run over early on, but Tom Brady got sacked four times and was pressured just enough to be annoying. Now Aaron Donald and Von Miller get to have their say.

In the first meeting back in Week 3 – at 34-24 Ram win – Brady went off for 432 yards, but the ground game didn’t do anything with just 35 yards, and Chris Godwin – who’s now out for the year – played a big role.

San Francisco at Green Bay Divisional Round Game Preview

Why San Francisco Will Win the NFC Divisional Round

It got lost in all of the Dallas narratives that San Francisco is really, really good.

The Cowboys had all the pressure in the world on their shoulders – and played like it. They were tight, they were off, and the offense that ripped through everything late in the season couldn’t do a whole lot of anything until desperation kicked in.

The ground game was mediocre, Dak Prescott never got into a rhythm, CeeDee Lamb barely showed up, and it’s all because of a San Francisco pass rush that kept battling in the backfield.

Even with Nick Bosa going out with a concussion – he’s expected to be back for this – the 49ers still came up with five sacks. Dallas didn’t have any.

But even with Dallas – we’re adults here; we can call it what it was – gagging away the playoffs, San Francisco did its part by being more physical with its running game, more careful with the ball, and a whole lot smarter.

Elijah Mitchell was the best running back on the field, the 49ers were +2 in turnover margin, and they had the ball for close to 34 minutes. This team is able to adapt and adjust with peerless play calling to go along with a “nobody believes in us” attitude.

The talent is there to win this, but …

Cincinnati at Tennessee Divisional Round Game Preview

Why Cincinnati Will Win the AFC Divisional Round

Do the Titans have the ability to stop the storm?

Yeah, the Tennessee defense has been great, it’s second in the NFL against the run, and the team has been able to roll whenever it’s not turning the ball over a bazillion times – more on that in a second.

It’s not like the D had to deal with a whole slew of high-powered passing attacks over the last two months.

San Francisco went off for over 300 yards through the air, and that’s been about it for the good air shows over the second half of the season.

Yeah, the pass defense was a bit of an issue over the first half of the season when everyone had to throw to try keeping up with what Derrick Henry and the offense were doing, but go back to Week 9 against the Rams for the last time the Titans had to be worried about the downfield pass.

Joe Burrow and company are in a groove, rolling past the Chiefs for big play after big play when it mattered in Week 17, rolling well enough against the Raiders in the Wild Card round, and coming up with over 1,200 passing yards in the last four games …

And no turnovers.

Tennessee is 5-3 over its last eight games. It didn’t turn the ball over in any of the five wins, and gave it up 13 times in the three losses. As dangerous as the Cincinnati offense might be, it’s the defense that has to do its job and hold serve with a few takeaways.

The Bengals forced multiple takeaways in six of the last 11 games, but …

NFL Playoff Divisional Round First Thought Predictions
San Francisco at Green Bay
Buffalo at Kansas City
Los Angeles or Arizona at Tampa Bay

Let’s just hope that all of that will bring us something wonderful.

Oh sure, Las Vegas made things interesting against Cincinnati at the end, and the world is still waiting for Dallas to finally wake up and start playing against San Francisco, but Tampa Bay over Philadelphia was a dud.

Kansas City over Pittsburgh turned into breathtaking dud. Buffalo over New England became a shocking dud.

Fortunately, here come the killer matchups that should be a whole lot more fun. So what’s going to happen?

As we do for the college side, we go with the first-guess picks and then work from there. Like they tell you in third grade, always go with your first answer.

I don’t look at the lines, guess at what they are, and then add them at the end.

Last year I totally rocked the Wild Card round – 6-0 straight up and 5-1 against the spread – but this time around?  Uhhhhh, as the man said, it’s on to Cincinnati – or, Cincinnati vs Tennessee – going 3-2 both straight up and against the spread with the Rams-Arizona game pending.

When our game previews come out – after the news of the week happens and there’s even more of a deep dive happening – these can and might change, but …

2022 NFL Playoffs Divisional Round: Saturday

4 Cincinnati at 1 Tennessee

Knee-Jerk Instant Analysis: Just how healthy is Derrick Henry?

That’s it. That’s everything.

D’Onta Foreman has done a nice job over the back half of the season for the Titans, and the defense has been terrific, but this comes down to whether or not the offense can control the tempo of the game and take the will away from the Cincinnati defense.

The Bengals were great against Las Vegas. Joe Burrow was sharp, Joe Mixon ran well, and the offense popped for over 300 yards in the 26-19 win.

However, there was a stretch in the second half when the Raider offensive line took over and Josh Jacobs was effective enough to change the overall energy of the game. That’s what Henry has to do, and if he can’t get rolling, then it’ll be Foreman.

Originally, the call was that New England was going to roll on into Nashville and grind its way to a win … oops. Cincinnati will get the offense going, but the rested Titans will come back in the second half with the ground game and  fantastic run defense getting this done.

Knee-Jerk No Research Prediction: Tennessee 26, Cincinnati 20
Early Line No-Look Guess: Tennessee -3.5
Actual Line: Tennessee -3.5, o/u: 47

Los Angeles Rams vs Arizona Wild Card Game Preview

Why Arizona Will Win the NFC Wild Card

Get Kyler Murray going.

He wasn’t going to run as much this year, he was banged up and not himself over the second half of the season, and … it’s playoff time. Turn it loose.

James Conner is hobbling, there’s no DeAndre Hopkins – although there’s some hope that he could return if the Cardinals go on a playoff run – and the top targets are just okay. However, if Murray is making plays on the move, and if he’s taking off and pressing the Ram second-level, everything changes.

The defense is going to show up.

It was good against the run in the Week 14 loss to the Rams, and it didn’t break too often after bending a bit in the 37-20 Week 5 win. It’s going to allow a few big runs, but it’ll hold up in the red zone.

It’ll give up passing yards – it’s good for allowing more than 200 per game – but again, it’s more about bending but not breaking, even if there were massive issues all the way around in the loss to Seattle in Week 18.

The Cardinals lost to LA the second time around after being -2 in turnover margin. they won the first time around when they were +2, and they’ve been relatively careful with the ball against everyone else.

Over the last seven games they give up those two turnovers to the Rams and just two in the other six games. Los Angeles has turned it over eight times in the last three games.

But …
