Do the Jets need to look at QBs in the 2023 NFL draft?

If Zach Wilson keeps making poor decisions and turning the ball over, the Jets might have to look for his replacement sooner than later

The New York Jets were off to the races coming into the game against the New England Patriots on Sunday, winning four in a row on the back of some solid defense and an explosive running game.

This week, however, they ran into a buzzsaw in the form of their AFC East rival.

The Pats took advantage of the absence of Jets rookie running back Breece Hall, and made second-year quarterback Zach Wilson beat them with his arm. While Wilson showed flashes of potential at times, it was also apparent that his decision-making and accuracy were erratic at best. The Jets’ signal-caller put the Jets into bad positions over and over again Sunday, and ultimately turned the ball over four times between three interceptions and a poor turnover on downs.

This is starting to become a boiling point for the Jets, as Wilson was drafted No. 2 overall last year to be the franchise quarterback of the future, and had hopes of his development starting to peak over the horizon by now. But it’s difficult to say there’s been much improvement from what was a mixed bag of a rookie season, where once again Wilson showed plenty of flashes, mixed with poor play and turnovers.

In the three games prior to Sunday’s loss, Wilson hadn’t thrown a touchdown pass, and in the games he has thrown one this year. he has thrown more interceptions with his questionable decision-making. It appears clear that the Jets have limited what they’re asking of him, with the help of an excellent zone run scheme. But when that’s taken away from him, it’s obvious he struggles to make the correct decisions, and keeps turning the ball over.

In a league where having a franchise quarterback you can trust is imperative, and with a potentially stacked class of passers coming into the 2023 NFL draft, it may be tough for the Jets to avoid the conversation about drafting another one.

This front office has built an excellent team through the draft over the past couple of years, and it feels like at this point, they’re one key piece away.

Unfortunately, that piece just happens to be the most important one.

If Wilson doesn’t show huge improvements over the rest of the 2022 season, the harsh reality is that the Jets might be better off looking for his replacement in next year’s draft.

The New York Jets appear to have lost rookie running back Breece Hall to a serious knee injury

A promising rookie season for New York Jets running back Breece Hall might be coming to an end.

The explosive playmaker showed off his impressive skills yet again in Sunday’s win over the Denver Broncos, including a 62-yard touchdown run. But he left the game with a knee injury, and it appears to be serious.

Jets head coach Robert Saleh said “not good” when asked about Hall’s prognosis after the game, suspecting an ACL injury.

A second-round pick in the 2022 NFL draft out of Iowa State, Hall has been one of many impressive rookies for the pleasantly surprising Jets so far this season. Losing him for the year would be a huge blow to the team, and an otherwise impressive start to his NFL career.

Jets rookie RB Breece Hall already flashing star potential

The New York Jets have a star on their hands in rookie running back Breece Hall

Back in April, the New York Jets grabbed their running back of the future in Breece Hall with the 36th overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft.

While there may have been some speculation that second-year back Michael Carter would still retain the top spot on the depth chart, or that it would be a certified timeshare situation, it became clear last week that Hall is the franchise running back the Jets have been seeking.

Against the Miami Dolphins in Week 5, Hall announced himself to the entire league as he exploded for 197 total yards and a touchdown. The Iowa State product almost had another score, as he dragged Dolphin defenders with him down to the one-yard line on an incredible 79-yard catch-and-run.

Hall proved to be a dynamic force in both the run and passing games, smashing through holes and weaving his way through blocks against one of the more talented defenses in the NFL.

There should be little question moving forward about who will get the majority of the touches in this dangerous Jets offense, as Hall adds just another weapon and dimension to what seems like an already stacked group.

Hall has lived up to his predraft projections and athletic scores coming out of college, and he looks every bit like the franchise runner many thought he was. He should continue to develop and grow even more as his role in the Jets’ backfield expands.
