The first College Football Playoff rankings are out and despite the Air Force Falcons being ranked No. 17 in the AP poll, they are No. 25 in the rankings that matter.

Tulane which has one loss is ranked one spot ahead of Air Force. That is likely due to strength of schedule. The Green Wave has a loss against Ole Miss which is ranked 10th in these rankings. That loss is really good and it should be noted that Tulane was not at full strength missing quarterback Michael Pratt.

These initial rankings mean that Air Force is not in the Fiesta Bowl, or whatever big time bowl game the Group of Five team gets shuffled off to.

This changes the Mountain West bowl projections that we made prior to the playoff rankings earlier in the week.

So, we will update these rankings as well every week which could be different from the updates after the weekend slate of games.

How many bowl teams this week?

Fresno State, Air Force, and UNLV are still the three Mountain West teams that are bowl eligible and will bet getting to the post season.

There is now are three teams that are close with San Jose State and Boise State with four wins, and Wyoming is still at five wins after its blowout loss on the road to the Broncos.

These three teams are all but assured to get to six wins, per ESPN’s FPI. The Spartans are at 67.1%, 82.7% for the Broncos, and a near lock 99.5% for the Cowboys.

Of the three-win teams, Utah State is just over a coin flip to make a bowl game at 51.4%, which is down 2.9% from last week’s numbers. Colorado State lost to Air Force and are at 30% for getting to six wins.

It looks like six teams are the bare minimum to go bowling and we will make a rubberneck change and drop from eight to six bowl teams for the Mountain West this week.

Fresno State, Air Force, and UNLV are the first three teams to become bowl eligible within the Mountain West. The Rebels are bowl eligible for the the first time since 2013 when they finished with a 6-6 regular season record and went to the Heart of Dallas Bowl.

The Wyoming Cowboys should be the next team to get to bowl eligibility. They are 5-1 but have a tough matchup this week at Boise State. The Cowboys will get there relatively soon, if not this week.

Then there are a slow of three win teams with Boise State, San Jose State, Utah State, San Diego State, Colorado State, and New Mexico.

According to ESPN’s FPI, here are the chances of these teams getting to the needed six wins.

  • Wyoming 99.8%
  • Boise State at 62.5%
  • Utah State at 54.3%
  • San Jose State at 48.2%
  • Colorado State at 34.2 %
  • New Mexico at 13%
  • San Diego State at 9.7%

History has had seven Mountain West teams go bowling, so by going by that matrix that means the Broncos, Aggies, Spartans and Rams will be in the postseason to make it an extra one and go with eight teams.

The Aztecs 6-0 loss to Nevada gives very, very little confidence they can figure things out and get to a bowl game. The Lobos chances are slim due to the schedule.

They go to Nevada, host UNLV, go to Boise State and then Fresno State, with a finale hosting the Aggies. That is a tough go for a bowl game but getting to four wins would double last year’s win total.

Unless something wild happens, Air Force is in the frontrunner seat to earn a New Year’s Six bid. They are ahead of Tulane in the rankings and will very likely remain there with zero losses. The official College Football Playoff rankings are still a few weeks off to know for sure.

The Falcons do take on rival Navy this weekend and will do so without starting quarterback Zac Larrier for this week and maybe more. That is the one big thing in the way of them staying undefeated.

For now, Air Force is pegged to the Fiesta Bowl and will be a pain in the butt matchup for some team like Oregon, Texas or Penn State.

We are all in on UNLV making a bowl game. The Rebels are at 4-1 and take on their rival Nevada who are not very good this year. They also host Colorado State and go to New Mexico, so six wins look good.

There could even be more wins as the Rebels will play San Jose State which isn’t looking all that great. Are we going to talk about a UNLV team that is going to win at least seven games?

The Rebels are the surprise team of the conference with typical expectations. Air Force is in the mix too as they are currently undefeated and had some offensive turnover, but UNLV has not been this good in a very long time and Barry Odom will have them to the post season.

Week 5 is in the books and it seems like more and more teams are slowly securing their spot in a bowl lineup. We make a big shift for a potential New Year’s Six matchup and swap out Fresno State for Air Force.

While the Bulldogs arguably have better wins with a pair of power conference wins, the Falcons have looked more dominant all year — outside of the 13-3 win over Sam Houston State.

ESPN Football Power Index like UNLV’s chances, and not just like but love the Rebels chances of making a bowl game for the first time since 2013.

Currently, FPI gives just six teams with a better than 50% chance to make a bowl game but odds are and history suggest seven will make a bowl game, maybe even eight.

There are some changes this week that are not for the best within Mountain West play. We removed out Utah State after its loss to James Madison and were close to putting in Colorado State but we are not there yet.

Those two could both make a bowl game but the projections are too close to call and the confidence level is not quite there yet for either team. The Rams are higher up than the Aggies in making a bowl game this year.

Odds are, at least one of those will get to that six-win threshold to become bowl eligible.

The Mountain West has been really good at getting more bowl bids than their allotment provides. This year probably will end up that same way with about seven, or even eight teams to make a bowl game.

Colorado State’s close loss to Colorado does not automatically put them in bowl contention. The Rams still need to win games. That goes the same for San Jose State and San Diego State. The latter two are in by a thread this week.

Utah State is going to barely make it in this week even though they loss to Air Force. The Aggies may have some hope as their second half showed a lot when McCae Hillstead took over at quarterback and showed well against the Falcons.

The James Madison will be a test for Utah State. Win and they are firmly in prime bowl position. Lose and there are issues.

Week 2 is over and it provided some interesting results for bowl contention teams. Fresno State needed overtime to top Eastern Washington. A good FCS team but the Eagles were not even in the top 25 of the coaches poll at their level.

That close win knocks out the Bulldogs for a potential NY6 game. It is not out of the question for the Mountain West champion to be there but that slot might be in the hands of Tulane, despite its loss to Ole Miss.

Wyoming is 2-0 and a solid win over Texas Tech so that helps their chances, and Fresno State is not out of it either.

However, the Cowboys take on the Longhorns and that will be another big boy chance to provide an upset over Texas. At this moment, Wyoming is a four-touchdown underdog.
