Navy (1-2) vs Temple (0-0) Game Preview

Why Navy Will Win

Just how in shape are the Temple Owls?

They were supposed to start their season against Miami, and then play Idaho, and then deal with Rutgers before playing Navy in late September. Instead, all four – Temple was supposed to play UMass this weekend – non-conference games were cancelled.

Navy has struggled – getting obliterated by BYU and Air Force, and needing a late comeback to beat Tulane – but it had three games to get the machine in motion. Temple has to come up with a slew of new starting parts on the end and in the linebacking corps.

Navy’s option offense isn’t how you want to get everything in place for the season. This Temple team will need time and seasoning, but …

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Temple Will Win

Saying Navy has struggled was kind. Outside of two quarters, it’s been flat awful.

The running game isn’t working – falling to hit 120 yards against either BYU or Air Force – and the run D has been obliterated. It’s the worst in the nation, allowing 312 yards per game – ten yards more than anyone else, and with Ole Miss the only other team giving up more than 300 a game.

In the first game of the tear, Temple isn’t going to get too quirky. Early on, the Owl O line will be one of the team’s biggest strengths. The backfield is deep enough to form a good rotation.

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

What’s Going To Happen

Temple might be rusty, but start running, keep running, and own the lines – Navy isn’t stopping a thing.

The Owl offense isn’t going to have the firepower needed to win this in a blowout, but they’ve had plenty of time to prepare for the options. The ground game will roll for over 200 yards.

Navy (1-1) vs Air Force (0-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Navy Will Win

It took six quarters to get there, but Navy finally looked like the team it was supposed to be in the comeback win over Tulane. Can that team make the trip to the Air Force Academy?

This is a terrific Navy team that got steamrolled by BYU, but it finally started to move the ball late against the Green Wave with the running game able to take over with the precision needed – along with more of a passing attack than expected.

Air Force isn’t totally starting over, but six of the top seven tacklers are gone and just enough is gone off of the offensive line to be a problem. As long as the Navy lines are up to speed now after not getting physical enough this offseason through the BYU game, it should be way ahead of the game.

Or …

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Air Force Will Win

It’s possible Navy isn’t that good and it just so happened to get a good half of football to pull up out of the nosedive.

The running game isn’t dominating like it should, the big dashes aren’t there on the outside, and the O is desperately missing a playmaker like Malcolm Perry of last year.

Thee hasn’t been any pass rush, the the run defense has been way too shaky, to be kind. If Air Force can come out strong and take an early lead, it can take over control against a Navy team that needs it, and will have a hard time getting it if the Falcon offense is close to precise.

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

What’s Going To Happen

Navy is impossible to figure out so far – it seems like it’s on the verge of flipping a switch to on, but it’s been way too mediocre so far. Air Force might trying to hit the ground running as it hopes to get the Mountain West season going, but it’s got the lines to be able to hold up well.

Air Force’s biggest early concerns should be the secondary and the receiving corps shouldn’t be an issue as it plays great out of the gate.

BYU (0-0) vs. Navy (0-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why BYU Will Win

The Cougars have the linebackers.

How do you stop the Navy option? You get good play on the defensive front that can hold on after getting punched in the mouth by the fullback, and you have experienced, smart, disciplined linebackers who stay in their lanes and can keep making plays in waves.

The BYU linebackers might be the team’s biggest strength, with the depth to keep a good rotation going and the speed and quickness to handle what’s coming on the outside. That, along with a slew of big 300-pounders on the defensive front should be the right type of formula to at least slow down the machine.

Navy’s offense is the Navy offense – it’s plug-and-play, to a certain extent – but this is the first game after the Malcolm Perry era. Is was supposed to be Perry Olsen under center, but now it’s going to be Dalen Morris, but it could be Olsen at times because Morris hasn’t started a game.

CFN 2020 BYU Preview

Why Navy Will Win

BYU suffered a crippling blow when star TE Matt Bushman was lost for the season in practice. He didn’t just lead the team in receiving yards, he was a go-to guy for Zach Wilson to keep things moving.

It doesn’t exactly help that the top three BYU wide receivers have to be replaced, too.

The Cougars have a good, veteran offensive front, but the running backs need to emerge after a lackluster season. So now Navy’s big potential weakness – a revamped secondary that lost a few key parts to the transfer portal – might just get a bit of a break.

CFN 2020 Navy Preview

What’s Going To Happen

It’s going to be a good one on a Monday night.

Navy is going to control the clock, control the tempo, and it should be business as usual with the ground game. However, don’t expect the same explosion the offense had with Perry under center.

The BYU lines will more than hold their own. This is a strong, veteran team with several flaws, but with enough good parts to hold up for a full 60 minutes. The depth at linebacker will be a big deal – the D won’t wear out.

However, Navy will be sharp when it needs to be in the second half. In a back-and-forth game, the Midshipmen will go on a long, long scoring march early in the fourth to take over for good.

5. AAC 2020 Preview

Don’t start worrying about the College Football Playoff – that will be what it’s going to be.

Of course, with the Big Ten and Pac-12 out of the picture, this is the perfect time for a Group of Five team to finally break through the ceiling, but the same unspoken rules are still likely going to apply.

[jwplayer zttcjcuk]

Fair or not, it still will likely take nothing short of an undefeated championship season to get into the club – and it would help if there’s a multi-loss champ among the Power 5 programs.

But again, don’t use this of all seasons to obsess about that. This could be the year when the national spotlight shines on the conference for more than just one big Saturday night game.

With UConn taking off for life as an independent – it’s postponing football until 2021 – this now becomes a tight 11-team league with a season that should see a whole slew of twists and turns on the way to coming up with the top two.

Tulsa beat UCF last year and almost pulled off wins over Memphis and SMU. This year’s version is better, so if that’s the possible weakest team, look out.

The stars are still the stars. UCF and Memphis are going to be fantastic, Cincinnati has top 25 upside no matter who was going to play this year, and it’s possible that Houston really was on to something last season when it used the campaign as one big practice for this year.

Navy is still fantastic, Temple is going to be a problem for the top teams, the SMU offense isn’t taking any sort of a step back, and Tulane is solid across the board.

East Carolina has a fun, dangerous offense, and USF has a whole lot of talent in place for new head man Jeff Scott.

So yeah, if a team can get through all of that unbeaten and win the American Athletic Conference title, the CFP types really will take notice … maybe.

Hoping you and yours are safe and healthy.

5. College Football News Preview 2020: Navy Midshipmen Offense 3 Things To Know

You know what’s coming with the Navy offense. After the ground game sputtered just a wee bit – at least for this program – in 2018, the O hit the 4,000-yard rushing mark for the sixth time in seven years.

Step One is replacing 2,000-yard runner Malcolm Perry at quarterback. Sophomore Perry Olsen will get the first look to take over, but others will get a long look as the coaching staff plays around with the option. Essentially, the goal is to get as many good, quick runners on the field as possible.

CFN in 60 Video
[jwplayer 86qVUUao]

As always, the passing game is along for the ride. If the receivers can connect on a few big plays a game, it’s doing its job. 6-5, 221-pound junior Mychal Cooper is a perfect fit – big frame, physical, and can get deep. He led the team with 18 catches averaging over 21 yards per catch, and 6-3, 200-pound Ryan Mitchell was able to make an impact on is eight grabs.

The Midshipmen are used to replacing parts on the O line – experience with this group is always a luxury. The training system works, but there’s going to be some reworking to do on the left side and at center. All-star Billy Honaker is a great tackle to start with, and Justin Self is a versatile option who’ll take on a bigger role. It’ll end up working, especially because the backs are in place to make it all go.

Malcolm Perry was the team’s top runner, but Jamale Carothers and Nelson Smith are strong veteran inside backs – they combined for 21 touchdowns – and CJ Williams is the typical lightning-quick runner on the outside. In all, the top six running backs are expected to return.

How crazy is it to try predicting a college football season months in advance when 1) there wasn’t any spring ball, 2) there aren’t any real depth charts to go off of, and 3) we don’t even know what the 2020 season is going to be?

Just crazy enough to potentially get some fantastic values on the early lines.

Notre Dame vs Navy Game Preview: Preseason Version

Why Navy Will Win

Considering the lack of preparation this offseason on all sides, Navy being able to do what it does with its precision and timing might not be that much of a problem. In the Week 0 game, it should be able to grind down the clock enough to keep the score low, control drives, and keep the tempo of the game on its side.

Eight starters are back on a defense that got gouged in last year’s 52-20 loss, but the Irish have a whole slew of parts they have to replace. Six Notre Dame players were selected in the NFL Draft, and that doesn’t count RB Tony Jones, DE Jamir Jones, WR Chris Finke and S Jalen Elliott. However …

Why Notre Dame Will Win

The Irish offensive line should be able to hammer down the Navy defensive front.

Yeah, Notre Dame just lost a ton of talent, but OT Liam Eichenberg and four starters are expected back on an offensive line that might be a killer. The Navy defensive front loses its 300-pounders from last year and – like normal – has a slew of 250-pounders trying to hold up.

The Irish only ran for 105 yards and were held to just over three yards per carry – and won by 32. Ian Book might not throw for five touchdowns again, but the offense should be able to keep it simple, and …

What’s Going To Happen

The experience of the Notre Dame linebacking corps should be able to take over early on.

How do you stop the option? Discipline, and the Irish have the linebackers who can make up for the losses on the defensive front.

This will be a strong Navy team again, but the difference will be on the offensive fronts. The Midshipmen have to replace three starters – and QB Malcolm Perry – and the Irish will have the bulk to to take over early on.
