New Mexico looks to use battle tested stars to make a run in Las Vegas.

March is here folks, and around the country tickets are getting punched and teams are going into overdrive. With games on the docket everyday for the next four days, we dive right in.

A team more primed to make a dark horse run to the championship game on Saturday you ask? An easy answer to that question is the New Mexico Lobos. Richard Pitino’s program has enjoyed a near one hundred and eighty degree turn around in just year two of the coache’s tenure. The Lobos logged their best start to the season in over five decades in 2022-2023.

Highlighted by an undefeated non-conference slate, several weeks in the AP Top-25 and “upsets” over several top-5 teams in the conference standings, including the regular season champions on the road. All of this though, to be overshadowed by a 6th place finish, mainly related to a collapse in early-to-mid February resulting in a four game losing streak.

The Mountain West Conference was an absolute gauntlet this year. The phrase “nobody is safe” typed countlessly in tweets and uttered on nationally televised broadcasts weekly. The Lobos fell victim to it but played their part as well.

But as previously stated, this is March. And tournament runs during this month are what drives this sport. New Mexico, like any of the other ten teams making the trip has a chance to punch their first ticket to the big dance in slightly under a decade, here’s why.

The Lobos road to the championship game on Saturday is definitely not an easy one. As they failed to secure the sweep on any team on their side of the bracket during conference play. Instead taking splits with Air Force, Boise State and Wyoming. While suffering losses in their one game showdowns against UNLV and Utah State.

But this team has the all-conference caliber star power who can score with the best of them any given night, key role players finding their rhythm at the perfect time and a team bought into their programs vision. Not to mention a squad at full strength, as floor general and the team’s second leading scorer Jaelen House was injured for half of that aforementioned four game slide down the standings.

Also keep in mind, of New Mexico’s ten losses this season, five of those were two possession losses or lost by five or fewer points. Let’s say the Lobos were able to push through and secure those wins, you are looking at a team fighting for a piece of the regular season title.

Hypotheticals aside, it will take four straight wins for the Lobos to secure their trip to the NCAA Tournament. But given the uncertainty of the game this time of year, it’s better to focus one the near surefire games in front of them. As their first opponent, Wyoming, has posed a threat to New Mexico of late.

With an appropriate 14-point Valentine’s Day win over the Lobos inside the Pit. Their a team, like their first round counterpart has a lack of true depth off of the bench. Weakened by injury and a mass exodus of their “Pac-12 talent” this past month.

If the same New Mexico squad we saw in the first-half of conference play (6-3 & vying for a top-3 conference spot each night) shows up to Sin City, this should be a solid W. Next up is a tougher task, a Utah State team that tied for second place in the conference. Who also gave the Lobos their first loss in the month of February, with a double-digit momentum killer inside the Dee Smith Spectrum.

The Aggies have five players that average double-digits, including the Mountain West Sixth Man of the Year (voted by the media) Dan Akin. Giving this Utah State team, one of the top-two offenses in the conference. The other you may ask? Richard Pitino’s New Mexico.

Where the Aggies hold the advantage is a slightly better defense that helps when things aren’t exactly going your way. While the Lobos excel in run and gun situations, scoring points off of turnovers and getting to the line.

With an off night from of Ryan Odom’s stars and or a truly great defensive performance by New Mexico on Wednesday, the upset potential is high.

New Mexico faces Wyoming in their first round matchup on Wednesday March 8th. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:00 PM MT inside the Thomas & Mack Center and can be streamed on the Mountain West Network.

Boise State Looking To Repeat

The first game will be Thursday

No. 2 Boise State will look to repeat as the Mountain West Tournament champions.

As the No. 2 seed in the Mountain West Tournament, Boise State will have a first-round bye and will play on Thursday. Boise State will await the winner of No. 7 UNLV vs. No. 10 Air Force.

To reach the Mountain West Conference Championship Game, Boise State will have to win two games on Thursday and Friday. With wins in the next two games, Boise State will have a chance to win back-to-back Mountain West Championships on Saturday.

On Tuesday, Boise State pulled off a 66-60 win over San Diego State. That win helped Boise State clinch a spot as the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament.

In Saturday’s regular season finale against Utah State, Boise State was unable to enter the postseason on a two-game winning streak. Utah State outmatched Boise State 86-73 in Logan, Utah.

For this week’s tournament, Boise State will have to move past the most recent loss to Utah State and prepare for a potential rematch in the conference semifinals on Friday. In the Utah State loss, Chibuzo Agbo led the way for the Broncos with 18 points. Three other Broncos had double-digit scoring totals in the road loss.

Boise State’s bench had 10 points against the Aggies. If Boise State wants to win the conference tournament, the bench will need to help out the starting five.

It will be key for Boise State to not look ahead and focus on Thursday’s matchup against UNLV or Air Force. Boise State went 3-0 against UNLV and Air Force during the regular season. The success against those two programs in the regular season will help Boise State win a second-round matchup.

If Boise State takes care of business on Thursday, Friday’s semifinal matchup will be against either No. 3 Utah State, No. 6 New Mexico, or No. 11 Wyoming.

Boise State’s offense will need consistent scoring throughout the conference tournament to ensure a bid to the NCAA Tournament.

For the first time in a long time, the top four seeds of the Mountain West tournament made it to the semifinals of the conference tournament.

San Diego State will be taking on Colorado State in what should be an epic game as will Boise State vs. Wyoming in the No. 1 vs. No. 4 matchup

Weeks leading up to the conference tournament we looked at TeamRankings.com who provided predictions for the Mountain West tournament.

Heading into the semifinals, San Diego State is the favorite to win the conference tournament. The Aztecs have been the favorite to win the conference tournament for at least a month.

San Diego State is now given just under 33% chance to win it all followed by Boise State, Colorado State, and Wyoming in the fourth spot.

This conference tournament has been one of the most competitive and fun of all 30-plus out there. Any of these four teams can win it all and currently San Diego State vs. Boise State is the most likely conference championship.

The Mountain West tournament semifinals will take place on Friday – Today, we’ll look at Wyoming facing Boise State; the winner faces Colorado State/San Diego State. The four remaining teams are virtual NCAA Tournament locks; all that awaits is the Selection Show on Sunday. Wyoming solidified their spot by beating UNLV on Thursday, as Xavier DuSell showed some March Magic with a late-game jumper.

Boise caught a break on Thursday — Nevada’s Kenan Blackshear had an uncontested look from deep, but the shot fell short, and the Broncos advanced. It wasn’t a premier defensive performance, allowing 1.01 points per possession, which is more than the average. The Broncos need the elite defense to show up against the Cowboys’ lethal offense to make a title game appearance.

Graham Ike has struggled in the last six games, making only 31 of his last 87 shots attempts (35%.) A lot of Ike’s success comes from drawing fouls, but his production dropped dramatically during Wyoming’s recent struggles. He scored 19 and 33 points in the two regular-season matchups against the Broncos.

Hunter Maldonado also struggled in the win over UNLV, but showing the ability to win despite not getting scoring from your top-two players shows the depth of Jeff Linder’s team. Even when Maldonado isn’t scoring, he’s constantly making his teammates better.

Players to watch:

Boise State: Emmanuel Akot

There’s only one point guard taller in the Mountain West than Maldonado, and it’s Emmanuel Akot, a 6-foot-8 versatile guard, who scored 24 points in the quarterfinal win over Nevada. Akot won’t get directly directly down to the basket by Maldonado, so that changes the game for Wyoming.

Wyoming: Xavier DuSell

DuSell hasn’t replicated the numbers of his freshman campaign, shooting only 34 percent from three due to injuries and inconsistent play. He’s only 7 for his last 28 from outside. That number has to improve if Wyoming reaches its ceiling, winning multiple games in the Big Dance.

Prediction:

Wyoming 73

Boise State 68

The Broncos don’t have enough offensive firepower to keep pace with Wyoming’s dangerous offensive punch. That will be the ultimate difference-maker in the semifinal matchup.

The Colorado St. Rams (2) look to prove their last victory against the San Diego State Aztecs (3) wasn’t a fluke.

TV: CBS Sports Network

STREAM: FuboTV – Get a free trial

KenPom Prediction: 64-63 Aztecs

The Rams were the favorite to win the conference this preseason. The Aztecs were chosen to finish in second. Turns out the voters were just slightly off.

The head to head series was split. The Aztecs won by 30 in Viejas arena, and the Rams won by 1 in Moby.

2022 Mountain West Tournament Day 2 Results, Highlights

It is a fun matchup as one of the nations best defenses goes up against one of the nations best offenses.

Both teams played close games yesterday. The Rams beat the Aggies by 2 on a clutch sequence where Isaiah Stevens drove into the paint and hit a cutting Chandler Jacobs for the layup.

The Aztecs had made some free throws in the closing seconds, something they’ve struggled with all season, and then Nathan Mensah collected his 4th block of the game to seal the victory.

The winner will be determined by who can play their style better. The Rams will bring their ball movement and ability to score from just about anywhere. Having the conference player of the year won’t hurt either. The Aztecs will bring their swarming defense and try to take the Rams out of their rhythm. They’ll also hope to get a better contribution from first team all conference player Matt Bradley, who was largely ineffective against Fresno while facing double and triple teams all game.

Boise State squeaks past Nevada, 71-69, advancing to the tournament semi-finals to face fourth-seeded Wyoming.

Both teams came out ready for battle in the semi-final game. At the U16 media timeout, Nevada would lead 12-9, shooting 71% from the field. Boise State would go 4-7 from the field early, scoring all of their points inside the paint. The Wolf Pack would keep the pressure on the Broncos, making nine of their first 11 shots from the field. Nevada would see an early 22-15 lead with 12 minutes left in the first half. Boise State would perform a complete 180 and closed the first half on an 18-5 run to put the Bronco’s up 38-33 at halftime. Boise State shot 60% from the field in the first half, compared to Nevada’s 46%.

Coming out onto the court for the second half, Boise State was able to continue the great offensive performance. After a continuing back and forth battle from both teams, the Broncos were able to jump to a 61-49 lead with just eight minutes left in the game. Grant Sherfield scored seven of the Wolf Pack’s next nine points to cut the lead to just four at 62-58 with 6:52 left to play in the game. Emmanuel Akot scored back-to-back baskets, including a three-pointer to pull away a bit. The Broncos led 67-60 with just under five minutes left in the game. Warren Washington went to the free-throw line with four minutes left to bring the game to within three. With 90 seconds left in the game, Desmond Cambridge Jr. hit a layup to bring the game to within two, 71-69. Unfortunately for Nevada, that is the score the game would at, following a missed last-minute three-point attempt by Kenan Blackshear.

Boise State was led by their third-leading scorer, Emmanuel Akot. Akot finished with 22 points in-game and proved to be too much for Nevada to handle. The 6’8 guard went 8-15 from the field, adding in four triples as well. Also finishing in double digits for the Broncos were Marcus Shaver Jr. and Abu Kigab who finished with 15 points and 11 points respectively. For Nevada, it was no other than Grant Sherfield leading the way. Sherfield finished with 25 points on 50% shooting from the field and added six assists to the game total. Desmond Cambridge Jr. finished with 16 points, while Warren Washington added 13 points to give Sherfield some help on the offensive end. Nevada finished shooting 44% from the field but struggled shooting the ball from deep, finishing 6-21 from beyond the arc.

Up next for Boise State, the Broncos face the fourth-seeded Wyoming Cowboys Friday at 6:30 PM PST.
