All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Oregon (0-0) vs Fresno State (1-0) Game Preview

Why Fresno State Will Win

The Bulldogs got in a true tune-up with a nearly perfect performance in a 45-0 win over UConn.

QB Jake Haener was sharp, the defense teed off into the backfield, and even with a few blips and mistakes here and there, it’s the type of game you want to have before dealing with a powerhouse who might be looking ahead to the showdown at Ohio State.

There are still plenty of question marks for an Oregon team good enough to be expected to find a spot in the College Football Playoff.

Is starting QB Anthony Brown ready to take the offense up a few notches? Will the attack be more explosive and more consistent? Fresno State’s win over UConn doesn’t mean everything is okay, but at least the veteran defense started to look the part.

Why Oregon Will Win

The talent level is national championship good.

The focus might be on the quarterback, but the rest of the skill parts are all set to be special around an offensive line that gets everyone back.

In this, Fresno State has to get used to dealing with a pass rush. It was able to take as long as it wanted to against UConn to let plays develop – the Huskies didn’t do a thing to get into the backfield – but the pressure will come from the Ducks from the start because …

Week 1 College Football Expert Picks

What’s Going To Happen

There’s still a whole lot to prove on the Oregon defensive side considering all the talent in place.

It was a good D last year, but it was hardly the dominant force it should’ve been. There’s NFL skill across the linebacking corps and it’ll all be unleashed early.

Fresno State isn’t UConn, but this is the tune-up game for Oregon before all the craziness of next week. It’ll pull away and be able to relax a bit in the second half, but there will be enough ragged parts to the performance to show why you schedule Fresno State before facing Ohio State.

However, Brown will be just fine. He’ll have an efficient day as he takes control of the starting gig.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Air Force (0-0) vs Lafayette (0-0) Game Preview

Why Lafayette Will Win

The Leopards weren’t bad in the short spring session, going 2-1 with a killer run defense and an offense that didn’t screw up.

Stop the Air Force running game; stop Air Force.

It was a small sample size, but Lafayette only allowed 63 rushing yards per game this spring. The linebacking corps is full of good-sized veterans who can move, with Major Jordan and Marco Olivas able to get into the backfield along with holding up against any power coming from the Falcon line.

As always, Air Force has to rebuild its offensive front, but …

Week 1 College Football Schedule, Predictions

Why Air Force Will Win

The O that led the nation in rushing in 2020 still has enough weapons to control games on the ground – the system always works, and this is the game to tune it all up.

The defense might technically lose eight starters, but it gets a whole slew of guys back who opted out of the 2020 season. Now the secondary should be a plus, the D overall is a whole lot deeper, and there shouldn’t be too much of a drop-off after finishing sixth in the nation in total defense.

Week 1 College Football Expert Picks

What’s Going To Happen

Lafayette might have been able to play a bit this spring, but it still has to prove it can handle the speed and precision of the Air Force offense.

It might take a drive or two for the Falcons to get going, and then the ground game will take over and control the clock and the game. Expect Air Force to have the ball for at least 35 minutes.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Hawaii (0-1) vs Portland State (0-0) Game Preview

Why Portland State Will Win

It’s been a while since the Vikings have been able to play, but they bring back a decent running game that should be able to pound away a bit along with a passing game that will keep the heat on the Rainbow Warrior secondary.

QB Davis Alexander returns after throwing 28 touchdown passes in 2019, and Emmanuel Daigbe brings a dangerous deep threat to lead a good-looking receiving corps.

Hawaii couldn’t get much out of the offense against UCLA – coming up with just 269 yards of total O – and the D got run over for 244 yards, but …

Week 1 College Football Schedule, Predictions

Why Hawaii Will Win

Portland State isn’t UCLA – at least not 2021 UCLA.

No, Hawaii couldn’t seem to do a whole lot of things right in the 44-10 loss, but that was a get-the-kinks-out game – at least that’s the hope.

This is a far better team than it showed in Pasadena. The Rainbow Warriors have a decent defense, the running game will set a tone after coming up with just 26 yards, and expect a whole lot of plays in the backfield after struggling to get behind the line.

Week 1 College Football Expert Picks

What’s Going To Happen

It might not seem like the normal home for Hawaii – playing in a sports complex as the stadium situation is being worked on – but being in familiar surroundings will matter.

Hawaii was great at home last year and inconsistent on the road. Portland State won’t get rocked until late, but the Rainbow Warriors will look far sharper after getting a game in.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Wyoming (0-0) vs Montana State (0-0) Game Preview

Why Montana State Will Win

The Bobcats have a whole lot of talent for new head coach Brent Vigen to work with.

One of the best-looking teams in the Big Sky coming into the season, there’s high-end talent even though there’s a lot missing from the 2019 team that went 11-4 and got to the FCS Playoffs.

The pass rush should be terrific all year – Amandre Williams will be a terror off the edge – and Wyoming’s passing game can’t afford any sort of disruption. The Cowboys led the Mountain West in yards per completion, but they don’t and won’t throw that often or effectively. However …

Week 1 College Football Schedule, Predictions

Why Wyoming Will Win

The Cowboy running game will rip through everyone all year long.

Starting QB Sean Chambers can move, the running backs are some of the most explosive in the Mountain West, and the offensive line will be a rock with all five starters returning.

Montana State might be good, but it’s just getting up and going again after missing the 2020s season. The defensive side has to replace six starters, but …

What’s Going To Happen

The Bobcats will bring the fight.

Again, this is a good program with a solid new head coach coming in from the North Dakota State staff. It’s going to be an effective team at keeping things moving behind a line good enough to pound away a bit.

Wyoming will control the clock with the running game, the defense will be the Wyoming defense – it won’t give up anything big – and Chambers will have a decent enough day to keep everything moving.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Colorado State (0-0) vs South Dakota State (0-0) Game Preview

Why South Dakota State Will Win

The Jackrabbits came really, really close to winning the FCS spring session national title.

The defense was phenomenal, the offense was great up front, and the ground attack averaged 232 yards per game as it rolled through FCS team after FCS team.

220-pound RB Isaiah Davis pointed away for 8.5 yards per carry and ten scores, Mark Gronowski stepped in and turned into a dangerous all-around star – throwing 15 touchdowns and just three picks, and with 577 rushing yards and seven touchdowns – and the defense took care of the rest.

Colorado State might have a veteran offensive line, but it was miserable in 2020 at keeping defenses out of the backfield. South Dakota State’s defense spent the spring living behind the line.

Week 1 College Football Expert Picks

Why Colorado State Will Win

Colorado State should be able to throw a bit.

The receiving corps is good, TE Trey McBride is great, and the South Dakota State secondary might have a few issues. The Jackrabbits didn’t give up multiple touchdown passes until the national championship loss to Sam Houston State, but the teams on the slate that could throw were able to do it.

On the other side, Colorado State’s pass rush is even better than South Dakota State’s.

For all of the Rams’ problems, the D will bother Gronowski and should get to the running backs before they can get started. There will be a whole slew of tackles for loss, and the run defense will be great on the inside.

CFN Preseason Rankings, Schedules, Projected Records For All 130 Teams

What’s Going To Happen

Colorado State will be pushed to the brink.

South Dakota State is more than good enough to pull this off, and it might be a whole lot sharper considering all the football it played just a few months ago. The running game will work, but the O will start to stall late.

The Colorado State offense will start to take over early in the fourth, the defense will come up with a few key stops on big sacks, and it’ll be a very, very difficult win in a nice test.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

New Mexico (0-0) vs Houston Baptist (0-0) Game Preview

Why Houston Baptist Will Win

The Huskies will still be winging the ball all over the yard.

Houston Baptist didn’t do the 2021 spring season thing, but it made life a whole lot of nasty for Texas Tech, North Texas, and Louisiana Tech in 2020 with a high-powered passing game that averaged 460 yards per game.

The offensive style isn’t going to stop now.

New Mexico’s defense got better as last season went on, but it was a disaster early and it wasn’t anything special over the last few games, either. The pass rush still has to prove it can do something strong, and the secondary gave up way too many big plays. Offensively, the Lobos have to be ready to keep up the pace, but …

Why New Mexico Will Win

Houston Baptist didn’t play a whole lot of defense, either.

The offense might have put up a gazillion yards per game, but the defense gave up a gazillion points. The Huskies get into shootouts, but lost those three games against the FBS teams.

The HBU O should work, but it was so good last season that WKU took away the offensive coordinator, star QB Bailey Zappe, and three of the top receivers.

The New Mexico offense was able to get the ground game going throughout last year, and it’s not going to have any issues powering away – expect at least 200 rushing yards, but probably closer to 300.

What’s Going To Happen

Former Kentucky QB Terry Wilson will take over the New Mexico attack and make it roll – at least in the opener.

Houston Baptist will do what it does with a whole lot of passes and big plays, but the defense won’t get New Mexico off the field. The Lobo ground game will be terrific, Wilson will be outstanding, and with the victory – going back to the end of last year – it’ll be the program’s first three-game winning streak since the middle of 2016.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

UNLV (0-0) vs Eastern Washington (0-0) Game Preview

Why Eastern Washington Will Win

Here comes the high-powered passing game.

Eastern Washington will hardly be intimidated by the date in Allegiant Stadium against a Mountain West team. It’s coming off a strong spring FCS season with an appearance in the playoffs – it’s got the parts back to do even more.

The Eagles were third in the FCS in total offense with Eric Barriere bombing away for 348 yards per game. He should do even more behind a terrific line and with his main targets returning.

UNLV has a veteran team back from the 0-6 first year under Marcus Arroyo, but the the offense still has to prove it can keep up the pace if the defense isn’t doing the job.

A few early Eastern Washington scores will be a big, big problem for the Rebel attack that has to find things that work, but …

Why UNLV Will Win

The Rebel defense could be one of the Mountain West’s bigger surprises.

It’s not just that 11 starters returning, but there’s depth, an upgrade in talent from the transfer portal, and …

Okay, so the UNLV defense was awful, but its main problem was against the run, getting hammered in game after game. Eastern Washington should be able to run, but it’s going to want to move as much as possible with the quick-hitting passing game.

The Rebel D should be able to hold serve just enough to matter – Eastern Washington will turn it over at least twice – the offensive side has solid receivers and a great back in Charles Williams, the overall experience should make a huge difference in a new season.

What’s Going To Happen

Eastern Washington is good enough to not only win this, but do it convincingly. UNLV, though, will survive despite giving up a whole lot of yards and a whole bunch of point.

The UNLV offense will show off surprising balance, but it’ll be two late defensive stops that get this done for the first win in the Marcus Arroyo era.

Expect a whole slew of big plays in a back-and-forth game that comes down to the wire.
