San Diego State announced that Jalen Mayden will be the starting quarterback for this week’s game against Nevada. Braxton Burmeister will now become a wide receiver and will be the team’s backup quarterback.

This was a direct move that signaled a need for a change in the offense. The Aztecs were looking for a consistent option at quarterback. Mayden started the last game against Hawaii and had an impressive showing. In the 16-14 win, Mayden threw for 322 yards and one touchdown. He completed 66% of his passes.

Last season, Mayden played some snaps as a quarterback. However, he was not viewed as a viable option. For this season, San Diego State switched Mayden from quarterback to safety. He began the season as a safety and eventually jumped back to the offense after the Boise State loss.

With Mayden being the starter for this week’s game, Burmeister will likely not start another game this season. He could see time as a backup, but he will mostly play as a wide receiver.

This move was the latest part of a midseason overhaul on offense. San Diego State parted ways with Jeff Hecklinski after the loss to Boise State. San Diego State head coach Brady Hoke hoped to spark momentum with Mayden as the quarterback. It worked against Hawaii and he could have another successful start against Nevada.

For Burmeister, his first season at San Diego State has been filled with several unforeseen circumstances. He transferred from Virginia Tech in the offseason and won the starting job. He was expected to help the Aztecs return to the Mountain West Championship Game, but the season took an unexpected turn for Burmeister. Between injuries and underwhelming performances, San Diego State decided to move in a different direction at quarterback.

Burmeister will be used as an insurance plan, in case Mayden is unable to play at any point. San Diego State dealt with several injuries and a transfer in the quarterback room and Mayden was the last resort. As it turned out, Mayden proved that he could lead the offense.

Hoke needed to make a change to get off the hot seat. If this move does not work out, Hoke’s job could be in jeopardy.

Does any school really want to be No. 1? This season is so odd with how the Mountain West is shaking itself out. One Twitter follower noted the record of the No. 1 team from our ranking the week after and it’s not great.

We are not saying there is some sort of curse or whatnot, but three games under .500 is not a good look on our pollster.

We will see if the No. 1 team this week can come out with a win or if there will be another loss and thus, more shuffling.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01fb7dafw2b08817yr player_id=none image=https://mwwire.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The Mountain West season is very unique this year. There have been some weird results and injuries have played a big part of this season. UNLV lost their second-straight game but they have a number of injuries including quarterback Doug Brumfield. The Rebels are still sitting at two wins away from bowl eligibility.

On the other sides, Fresno State is still without quarterback Jake Haener and other players are slowly coming back and they pulled off an upset over San Jose State in an unexpected defensive battle.

That Bulldogs win gets them two just two on the year. To make a bowl game they need to go 4-2 the rest of the way. They have a shot to get to six with games against New Mexico, Hawaii, and Nevada, all of which seem like a good chance for wins. San Diego State has been trending down, Wyoming is hit or miss and UNLV could be tough if they get healthy.

Getting seven teams bowling will be a tough challenge this year as we reach the midseason point.

Well… well… well. This week shows that the Mountain West is anyone’s for the taking with some more unique results.

However, even in saying it’s for the taking, the teams we thought would be the best are slowly getting there with Utah State on a winning streak, and Fresno State topping San Jose State in a fashion no one saw coming.

The conference is all over the place and likely will be these short five word recaps, especially if you look at week prior ones.

As always, below are our reactions and then followed by some twitter reaction.

Air Force – We can still run well.

Boise State – Bye weeks are so good.

Colorado State – Can’t beat Utah State’s QB4

Fresno State – What!!! We also play defense.

Hawaii – Don’t forget about Dedrick Parson

Nevada – Tough to win at Hawaii.

New Mexico – New offensive coordinator didn’t work.

San Diego State – Are our quarterbacks healthy yet?

San Jose State – Running game still an issue.

UNLV – Depth is not there yet.

Utah State – A win with QB4, sure.

Wyoming – Another team on a bye.

Jeremy and Matt are back to recap Week 7 of Mountain West football. Another week of interesting results with Air Force blowing out a UNLV team that is suffering quite a few injuries. San Jose State’s offense stalls in its loss to Fresno State.

New Mexico gets nothing going with a new offensive coordinator, and Hawaii is getting healthier as it claimed its first FBS win of the year. Also, Utah State wins with its fourth-string quarterback.

Mountain West Football: Week 7 Winners And Losers

Who were the big winners and losers from Week 7 of Mountain West football play? We make our picks for who shined and who disappointed.

Mountain West Football: Week 7 Winners And Losers

We take a look at the Mountain West’s winners and losers from Week 7 of college football.

Contact/Follow @MattK_FS & @MWCwire

Encouragements and letdowns from the week that was.

Week 7 in Mountain West football action featured just five games but had plenty of excitement in that small number. With some defensive fistfights and rivalry trophies on the line, some players and teams were destined to step up while others languished, so here are the winners and losers from Saturday’s games.

Winners

1. Utah State’s defense

After starting quarterback Cooper Legas got knocked out of the game in the first quarter with a concussion and backup Levi Williams suffered an ankle injury in the second, it might have been possible for Colorado State to steal another victory in conference play had the Aggies defense not stepped up in a big way to ensure that wouldn’t happen.

Despite also losing defensive end Byron Vaughns, Utah State kept the clamps on the Rams offense in a 23-13 victory by allowing just 3.9 yards per play. Daniel Grzesiak’s monster performance (three sacks, 3.5 tackles for loss, and a forced fumble) helped make up for Vaughns’s absence, as did Gurvan Hall’s game-sealing interception in the fourth quarter. It was the kind of effort they got repeatedly down the stretch in last year’s championship run, and the Aggies might need more of it if the injury news on offense isn’t good.

2. Fresno State defensive end David Perales

Speaking of monster performances, Perales’s dominance in a 17-10 victory over San Jose State on Saturday night might have single-handedly kept the Bulldogs’ title game hopes alive. He became just the second Mountain West player ever with four sacks and five tackles for loss, joining Utah’s Paul Kruger in that exclusive club, and may have set a tone for a re-energized Fresno State squad that is still very much in the thick of things and now has a key head-to-head advantage that may come in handy when November rolls around.

3. Hawaii running back Dedrick Parson

The Warriors offense has had its struggles throughout the season, but Parson put up the kind of performance against Nevada on Saturday night that reminds you why he’s one of the best playmakers in the Mountain West. He was given 24 carries against the Wolf Pack and responded with 136 yards and three touchdowns, all of which were season highs, leading the charge in what was easily Hawaii’s best offensive performance to date.

Losers

1. New Mexico’s coaching shuffle gambit

In their first game after replacing Derek Warehime as offensive coordinator with quarterbacks coach Heath Ridenour, the Lobos went south to Las Cruces and didn’t really look that much different on that side of the ball in a 21-9 loss to rival New Mexico State. New Mexico crossed midfield on just four of their 11 drives, coming away with a trio of Luke Drzewiecki field goals and a Miles Kendrick interception, and once again wilted after a respectable start in averaging 3.1 yards per play after the first quarter.

New Mexico also racked up four false start penalties and mustered only four explosive plays totaling 77 yards for the entire contest. This was a win the Lobos needed to bolster their hopes of climbing to bowl eligibility, but the same old offensive problems are threatening to completely derail what still looked like a promising campaign just a few weeks ago.

2. UNLV’s run defense

For the second time in less than a calendar year, Air Force ran all over the Rebels to the tune of 406 yards, at 5.3 yards per carry, in a 42-7 homecoming walloping at Allegiant Stadium. Though Austin Ajiake became just the second FBS defender to collect 20 total tackles this year, and the first Mountain West player to do so since David Woodward in 2019, UNLV managed only two tackles for loss as a team.

It’s the second straight week that a conference foe has had its way with the Rebels defense on the ground, so while injuries have certainly played a factor — they played against the Falcons without defensive linemen Naki Fahina and Adam Plant Jr., among others — and the offense didn’t do them many favors, their path to a bowl game could narrow considerably if defensive coordinator Keith Hayward can’t find answers soon.

3. The Mountain West’s already-slim New Year’s Six bowl hopes

When Old Dominion toppled Coastal Carolina early on Saturday, removing the last eligible undefeated Group of 5 team from the board, it seemed like there could be an opening for a top-tier Mountain West team to climb their way back into the picture. That was a nice bit of wishful thinking which lasted several hours before San Jose State lost on the road to Fresno State later in the evening.

Now that every team in the conference has at least two losses, it looks like the conference’s best hope to sneak into a big-time bowl game is to turn the clock back to 2014. You may recall that in the first year of the College Football Playoff era, the Boise State Broncos made their most recent Fiesta Bowl appearance with two losses and, at least for now, remain the only Group of 5 team to have accomplished that feat.

Given that no one is lighting the world on fire — Tulane, Cincinnati, and UCF all have one loss in the American but have yet to play one another; James Madison isn’t eligible out of the Sun Belt and the only one-loss team in that conference other than Coastal is South Alabama; and the MAC and Conference USA likely don’t have anyone seriously in the conversation — the odds are slim but, hey, this has been a goofy season. Anything could happen.

UNLV suffered a 35-point blowout loss to Air Force in Las Vegas on Saturday night. From the start of the game, it was an uncompetitive game for the Rebels and the early deficit was too steep to overcome.

There were moments for UNLV to close the distance in the first half but nothing materialized. By the end of the second quarter, the game was already in Air Force’s favor. Here is what went wrong for UNLV in the loss:

The Defense Could Not Stop Brad Roberts and John Eldridge III

Air Force running back Brad Roberts dominated the Rebels for the entire contest. He had 29 carries for 144 yards. The most impressive part of his performance was his four touchdowns that came near the goal line. Roberts led the rushing for Air Force, but he was not the only factor in the running game. John Eldridge started the scoring for Air Force with a 60-yard touchdown run in the 1st quarter. Eldridge finished the game with 116 rushing yards and 1 touchdown.

Early Mistakes Added Up

UNLV had a rough start to the game when the offense could not hold onto the ball. UNLV coughed up several fumbles, which translated into key points for Air Force. The Rebels failed the limit the mistakes and the defense could not handle the offense’s lack of support.

The Offense Was Limited By Air Force’s Defense

UNLV missed quarterback Doug Brumfield, who was out of the game with an injury. In Brumfield’s place was backup quarterback Cameron Friel. He had a hard time pushing the ball down the field to his receiver. Friel finished the game with 108 passing yards, one touchdown, and one interception. He completed 80% of his passes. In total, the offense produced 179 yards of offense.

SP+ PROJECTION: Utah State by 8.0

FEI PROJECTION: Utah State by 6.2

PARKER FLEMING PROJECTION: Utah State 81.78% win probability (34.34-21.82)

The Rams finally got their first win for new head coach Jay Norvell. Using two defensive touchdowns and a last minute drive for a field goal, the Rams finally got in the win column with a 17-14 victory over Norvell’s old squad in Nevada.

This week, the Rams welcome Utah State to Fort Collins for Homecoming. The Aggies will be looking to continue their momentum after their big 34-27 win over Air Force. Cooper Legas has taken over for Logan Bonner and his mobility has been key for the Aggies.

Blake Anderson is in his second season at Utah State. He led the Aggies to a Mountain West Championship in his first season at the helm. Blake Anderson took over for Gary Anderson (no relation) after spending seven seasons at Arkansas State and compiling a 51-37 record.

Now to the keys to victory for the Rams.

Three Keys to a colorado state victory

1. Let Pooler Grow

The Rams will be starting their third different quarterback in three weeks this week, as walk-on redshirt-freshman Giles Pooler gets handed the reigns this week after Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi took a couple knocks against Nevada. Pooler is 6’5″ 210 left handed quarterback who spent three years, less than three miles away from Canvas Stadium, at Rocky Mountain High School before transferring to St. Xavier in Lousiville, Kentucky during COVID.

Pooler earned the respect of the coaches during the spring, so much so that he was named back up on the first depth chart of the season and saw some action againt Michigan in garbage time. BFN passed ahead of Pooler due to his mobility. But Pooler is ready to show why the coaches have faith in him.

2. Keep the Crowd Involved

It’s Homecoming in Fort Collins this weekend and it’s getting close to a sellout. The crowd is going to be there and the Rams need to give them something to cheer for. When Canvas gets rocking, it can be an intimidating place to play. Rams’ fans just haven’t had much to cheer for these past few years.

If the defense can keep up their intensity and the offense can show what the air raid can be, the Fort Collins crowd can help this Rams team out. From making it hard for Utah State to make calls to making the Aggies doubt what they’ve heard. Loud noises can do it all.

3. Defensive Intensity

The Rams defense won them the game last week against Nevada. Ayden Hector had a pick six in his first start. And Mukendi Wa-Kalonji took a fumble back 50 yards for thicc six. Henry Blackburn made his return from injury and had himself a game. He tied for the lead in tackles with eight, had a tackle for loss, forced fumble, and also had a pass breakup.

The Rams continue to be a force up front with 11 sacks and 32 tackles for loss on the year. Mohamd Kamara has four sacks and 9.5 tackles for loss to the lead the team. If Kamara and C.J. Onyechi can keep Legas contained, the Rams have a chance to start 2-0 in conference play for the second year in a row.

what will happen

The Rams get back on track on offense after a rough start to the year. The defense makes enough plays to keep the Rams in the game. Utah State will get their shots in. But the monkey off the back from last week and the homecoming crowd propel Colorado State to victory.

Final Score: Colorado State 24, Utah State 20

jt092119h/sports/jim thompson/ UNM’s #28 Ahmari Davis leeps over a blocker and into the end zone for the score. Saturday, Sept. 21, 2019. (Jim Thompson/Albuquerque Journal)

The Rio Grande Rivalry kicks off this Saturday as the New Mexico Lobos (2-4) will travel down south to Aggie Memorial Stadium to take on the New Mexico State Aggies (1-5)

Both teams are coming off losses, but they will be looking to turn it around in this in-state rivalry game that promises to be very entertaining, given their history.

There is always plenty of fireworks when these two teams play, and we are not talking about those shot in the air!

The Lobos enter this game after losing to the Wyoming Cowboys, 27-14, in Albuquerque at University Stadium, and the Aggies coming off a loss to FIU 21-7

It’s been a repeat story for the Lobos the last few weeks on offense as they take the leads on the points early in the game but struggle in the second half to maintain the lead and score more points.

So much so that head Coach Danny Gonzales would make staff changes, relieving Offensive Coordinator Derek Warehime of his duties and job.

He promoted Quarterbacks Coach Heath Ridenhour, former head coach at Cleveland High school, to the interim Offensive Coordinator for the Lobos offense.

To say that he had success at Cleveland High School would be the understatement of the year; his teams put up big numbers at times averaging over 40 points a game.

In his 10 seasons at the head coach of Cleveland, Ridenour’s teams went 96-18 (a .842 clip), including an eye-popping 73-7 over the last seven years.

Six times his teams have averaged over 40 points per game, and four times the Storm led the state in scoring offense, including the past three years.

So, this will be very interesting to watch this Lobo offense, especially with all their weapons back from last week’s absence.

New Mexico State is 127th in FBS in total offense at 266 yards per game, and UNM is 128th with 260 yards per game

Danny Gonzales said he expects wide receivers Geordon Porter and Luke Wysong, running backs Sherod White and Christian Washington, and quarterback Isaiah Chavez to be available for Saturday’s game at New Mexico State

The five players sat out Saturday’s 27-14 loss to Wyoming for undisclosed disciplinary reasons that Coach Gonzales would not elaborate on.

Danny Gonzales has said schematic changes in the offense wouldn’t be dramatic.

Still, QB Kendrick said he’s expecting a more aggressive and creative approach to making opposing defenses react to the Lobos, not vice versa.

The New Mexico State Aggies are coming into this one after losing to Florida International University 21-7 last week.

The Aggies also struggled with the ball in their hands, as they couldn’t successfully move down the field from an offensive standpoint.

They finished that game with 221 total yards of offense. New Mexico State will have to be better on offense if they want to take down the Lobos in this one.
