With second place up for grabs, who can grab the momentum?

WHO: UNLV Rebels (11-11, 6-3 Mountain West) vs. CSU Rams (15-8, 6-4 Mountain West)

WHEN: Saturday, February 1 — 2:00 PM MT/1:00 PM PT

WHERE: Moby Arena; Fort Collins, Colorado (8,083)

Livestream: ESPN3

SERIES RECORD: UNLV leads the series 40-16

ODDS: Rams -6.5 per VegasInsider.com

The Colorado State Rams host the UNLV Rebels in the Rams annual Orange Out game that celebrates the history of CSU with throwback pumpkin and alfalfa colored uniforms. This will be the third Orange Out matchup between the Rebels and Rams. The teams have split the previous two games.

The fabulous freshman are leading this Rams team this season. Isaiah Stevens and David Roddy have been the big contributors, but Dischon Thomas and John Tonje have each played their part. Roddy has really stepped into his starting role and Stevens is coming off a buzzer beater shot to beat Nevada.

Don’t forget about the seniors. While they’ve stayed in the shadows of the freshman at times, they can be just as dangerous. Hyron Edwards is a tenacious defender. Kris Martin can hurt you from deep. And Nico Carvacho will punish you on the boards.

The UNLV Rebels were called the biggest overachievers in the Mountain West this season by ESPN. They were predicted to finish ninth in the conference. Yet, new coach T.J. Otzelberger has this team competing at a high level after a slow start. They even took San Diego State to the limit, only losing by four points in the Rebels last game.

The Rebels are led by guards Amauri Hardy and Bryce Hamilton with both of them averaging over 14 points per game. The Rebels also get significant contributions from Elijah Mitrou-Long, Donnie Tillman, and Cheikh Mbacke Diong. Everyone will need to be on their game against the Rams.

Prediction

This is going to be a dogfight. Both teams don’t shoot it that well from deep, but neither are they afraid to keep shooting it from deep. They also like to battle on the boards. With the Rams having momentum coming into this game, expect them to pull it out in the end.

Rams 76-67 Rebels

The Mountain West conference’s most impactful incoming transfers taking the court this season.

Transfers can be the life blood of a program or it’s downfall and that really just depends on if they are coming in or out of your program. Many teams sitting atop the current Mountain West standings have utilized transfers and with major success. While some bring them in just to try and compete.

Our list of all traceable transfers that left the Mountain West with eligibility was released two weeks ago and many enjoyed catching up with familiar faces still playing college basketball across the country at many different levels. But to cover the topic completely here is a ranking of incoming transfers having the most impact on their new teams.

Things to note:

  • Players listed are graduate transfers, players given immediate eligibility through the acquisition of waivers, sit out transfers and players that came from the junior college ranks.
  • Players currently sitting out due to transfer rules were not listed.
  • The eligibility estimator is an estimated amount of seasons and games that player is expected to have left. The amount of games left in the current season could extend out depending on that team’s success in the postseason. Many factors could also cut a career short. Or that player could simply transfer out of the program at years end.
  • This list is for first year Mountain West players only, if someone transferred into the conference but played last year they aren’t listed below.

New Mexico’s leading scorer given two game suspension for conduct deemed detrimental to the team.

The JaQuan Lyle saga was supposed to a have a different ending and a different narrative in Albuquerque, NM than at previous stops. His return to the court in the Mountain West has been highly anticipated for all parties involved. Lyle hadn’t played a game since March 8th, 2017 in a neutral court loss to Rutgers in the Big Ten Tournament where he had 5 points on 1-8 shooting from the field in 23 minutes.

But on November 6th, 2019, over two years later he took the court against Eastern New Mexico. He was rusty and looked more comfortable passing the ball than shooting it, 11 assists with 9 points.

Things looked like they were finally looking up for Lyle who was dismissed from the Ohio State Buckeyes basketball team after a run in with the police in his home town of Evansville, Indiana. He also suffered a season ending Achilles injury in the off season last year that that prevented him from taking the court after sitting out a year.

His Lobo team was competitive in the Mountain West, reaching as high as third in the conference standings while staying undefeated at home until just yesterday. This while leading the team in scoring plus posting 4.9 APG and 1.4 SPG, both good enough for second on the team in both categories.

But with the suspension of starting point guard JJ Caldwell and the dismissal of second leading scorer and starting center Carlton Bragg Jr., Lyle was called to step up. He continued to lead a struggling New Mexico team without two of it’s starters when another fellow starter Vance Jackson went down with a knee injury.

Lyle’s knee injury soon followed, which brought him to a spectator’s role on the sideline while he nursed it back to health. He didn’t travel with the team to Reno to face the Wolf Pack on Saturday but that same night hosted a party with many UNM student-athletes in attendance at an Airbnb where two attendees were shot and wounded after the party.

The home has occurred some pricey damages and as of today the University has dealt Lyle a two-game suspension resulting from actions deemed detrimental to the team. Lyle who is hoping to bounce back from the situation and keep his second chance took to twitter to post an apologetic statement.

We should expect to see him back on the court for the Lobos this season but with the program’s recent negative place in the public eye, nothing is certain.

New Mexico vs. #4 San Diego State: Aztecs Snap Lobos’ 15-0 Home Winning Streak With Ease, 85-57

The Aztecs keep on winning.

Contact/Follow @MWCwire

San Diego State was too much for the undermanned New Mexico roster.

The San Diego State Aztecs (22-0, 11-0 MW) showed once more why they are the top team in the Mountain West, continuing the trend of dominating opponents, whether on the road or at home.

New Mexico (16-7, 5-5 MW), a team that has been particularly successful at home on the year, was unable to keep pace with the conference leader, giving up 17 points in the first four minutes and thirteen seconds before getting on the scoreboard nearly five minutes into the game.

That would set the pace for the rest of the game, as the Aztecs continued to put steady and intense defensive pressure on a hobbling New Mexico team which was still without four of its five starters, which was never able to cut the lead to any less than 14 points, eventually losing 85-57.

The game saw plenty of bench players from both sides, but it was San Diego State’s bench that shone brighter, and appeared deeper than the oft touted Lobos’ bench, which was thought to be the deepest in the conference. The Aztecs’ bench outscored the Lobo bench 21-13, chipping in 3 of the Aztecs’ 15 three pointers.

Malachi Flynn (12 points, 4 rebounds, 6 assists, 1 steal), who sat for much of the first half after being called for a second foul, still managed to have a high level of efficiency for San Diego State, which saw 5 players score in double figures.

Ball movement was key for the Aztecs.

Often seeing possessions with eight passes led to wide open shots, many of which were three pointers that were sunk despite a rowdy crowd of just over 13,000. In total, 23 of the team’s 32 field goals were made on assists.

The Aztecs are now 4 games ahead of the next best in the conference, and would have to drop at least three of their last seven games (if UNLV wins out) just to be tied for first in the Mountain West standings, making the team a virtual lock as the regular season conference champions.

New Mexico drops to 5-5 with the loss, and is now 7th in the conference standings. The team is falling fast behind some poor decision making from the team’s player leaders. While the rest of the team works to develop a new identity and chemistry, it could be a long remainder of the season for the New Mexico Lobos, which are now in jeopardy of finishing in the bottom third of the conference.

Up Next:Ā

San Diego State will host Utah State at Viejas arena. New Mexico will head to Fresno, California to play to Fresno State Bulldogs.

GAME PREVIEW

Boise State returns to ExtraMile Arena on Wednesday night as they take on San Jose State. The Broncos have a chance to move into a third-place tie in the Mountain West, but these Spartans are not the same pushovers they were a year ago. The game tips off at 7:00 PM Mountain Time and will be shown on the Mountain West Network.

The Broncos (13-8, 5-4 MW) will be intent on extending a burgeoning winning streak, which so far features victories over Utah State and Fresno State on consecutive Saturdays. It may have taken a miracle for Boise State to escape with a win over the Aggies, but their defeat of the Bulldogs was as sound as they come. The Broncos coasted to a 34-point victory in Fresno four days ago.

The team has seemingly turned a corner in the second half of the season, thanks in part to the addition of transfer forward Abu Kigab. The former Oregon Duck is averaging 14.4 points per game and more than four rebounds nightly, having started in all eleven of his appearances since joining the active roster in December.

Kigab joins teammates Derrick Alston, Justinian Jessup, and RJ Williams as double-digit scorers. Alston, a 6ā€™8ā€ junior with pro potential, leads the charge with better than 19 points per game. The sharpshooting Jessup has regained his form after an early season slump, shooting 45% on three-pointers during conference play, and scores 15 points an outing.

Williams, in particular, has been a very important piece for the Broncos. He was thrust into the starting lineup at the start of this season after serving almost exclusively as a sixth man during his time on Leon Riceā€™s bench in 2018-19. Though he seemed somewhat miscast as the center, standing at just 6ā€™7ā€, Williams responded by becoming one of the most tenacious defensive rebounders in the country. He has shown continued development with his offensive game, posting nearly 12 points per game.

The arrival of Kigab has allowed Williams to slide back into his old roleā€”and the results have been enouraging.

And while this team has had its fair share of issues on the road, ExtraMile has been something of a safe haven for the Broncos.

All four of Boise Stateā€™s conference losses have come in enemy territory. In fairness, those games have been at The Pit, Viejas Arena, Lawlor Events Center, and Clune Arena. None of those venues are exactly welcoming. But the Broncos havenā€™t lost a home game since a November 15 upset at the hands of UC Irvine.

The Broncos will try to keep their eight-game home winning streak alive on Wednesday, but another Californian team could sneak up on them.

It may not be instantly obvious looking at the standings, but head coach Jean Prioleau has architected a quiet turnaround for San Jose State this season. Before judging this team solely on its 7-14 record, consider that the Spartans won just four games a year ago. They already have three victories in league play alone in 2019-20, including wins over Nevada and New Mexico.

The third member of that trio of wins came in their most recent contest, when they hosted Air Force. The Spartans prevailed 90-81 at home against the Falcons, with Seneca Knight turning in another 20-point performance.

It was the sophomoreā€™s fifth such effort this season, and his fourth in the past five games. Knight is averaging nearly 18 points and seven rebounds in Mountain West games and will be at the center of Prioleauā€™s program for the foreseeable future.

For the program to find any sustained success, however, Knight needs more support from the cast of players around him.

Senior guard Brae Ivey has been a serviceable game manager in the backcourt, averaging nearly ten points and three assists, while playing solid defense (1.2 steals per game) and limiting his turnovers (1.5 per game). But Ivey isnā€™t best suited as the second option in this offense.

Ideally, that person would be Richard Washington, Jr. The JUCO sniper was brought over after a successful stint at Tallahassee CC and was thought to be the offensive weapon that Prioleauā€™s team needed behind Knight.

Unfortunately, the returns havenā€™t been exactly as hoped, with Washington struggling with his shot at the Division I level. The junior is shooting just 36% from the field, a number weighed down by a pedestrian 32% clip from beyond the arc.

Still, Washington has the talent to get hot on any given night. If he and Knight can coordinate their efforts, they could pose a serious threat for a Boise State team that would do well not to look past this matchup in advance of their date with Nevada on Saturday.

Who is in the running for Player of the Year?

Take A Look At the Best Performances Around the Mountain West In Week Twelve

Contact/Follow @HardwoodTalk & @MWCwire

The streak continues and Flynn garners first place for the second straight week.Ā

The staff at the Mountain West Wire wanted to do something a little different this year. We are going to keep track of the top performers from teams around the Mountain West throughout the year and vote on who had the best performances that week.Ā

How it works description now at the bottom of the article

The order for the twelfthĀ week is as follows:

1. Malachi Flynn,Ā junior guard San Diego StateĀ (5 Points)

18 Points, 5 Assists, 5 Rebounds and 4 Steals against Wyoming

21 Points, 3 Rebounds and 2 Steals against UNLV

The streak is now at twenty-one, and Malachi Flynn and the San Diego State Aztecs have their eyes set on a conference championship and NCAA tournament berth. It was a tough week for this San Diego State program as the now No. 4 ranked Aztec’s were faced with one of their toughest opponents in conference play, the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels.

UNLV went into Sunday’s match up as one of the hotter teams in college basketball, winning seven of their last ten and looking to redeem themselves after a painful loss to instate rivals Nevada on the road. The grandeur of this meeting of old Mountain West Conference power houses was eclipsed by the world’s loss of an icon. And players on both sides of the court a long with everyone in the arena was in a state of dismay.

But the players continued on as best they could, and the Runnin’ Rebels proved to be the challenge we thought they’d be for the Aztecs. Trailing by only six points at the break and outscoring San Diego State 39-37 in the second half, ultimately coming up short those four points at the end of regulation. Flynn and his team stayed poised through it all, though struggling to contain a red hot Bryce Hamilton the combined effort of Flynn, Schakel and Pulliam lifted the team past UNLV and in the continued hunt for their ultimate goal.

2. Bryce Hamilton, sophomore guard UNLVĀ (4 Points):

26 Points, 7 Rebounds and 1 Assists against Nevada

29 Points, 10 Rebounds and 3 Steals against San Diego State

3. Jalen Harris, junior guard NevadaĀ (3 Points):

28 Points, 6 Rebounds, 6 Assists and 3 Steals against UNLV

19 Points, 7 Assists and 4 Rebounds against New Mexico

4.Ā  Sam Merrill, senior guard Utah State (2 Points):

15 Points, 5 Rebounds and 3 Assists against Air Force

28 Points, 5 Assists and 1 Rebound against Colorado State

5. Zane Martin, junior guard UNMĀ (1 Point):

20 Points, 4 Assists and 2 steals against San Jose State

23 Points, 4 Assists and 3 Rebounds against Nevada

Past Weeks:

Current Overall Point Totals:

Malachi Flynn, junior guard San Diego State (27 Points)

JaQuan Lyle, senior guard UNM (15 Points)

Sam Merrill, senior guard USU (15 Points)

Derrick AlstonĀ Jr, junior guard BSU (14 Points)

Jalen Harris, junior guard Nevada (14 Points)

Bryce Hamilton, sophomore guard UNLV (9 Points)

Jazz Johnson, senior guard Nevada (9 Points)

Nico Carvacho, senior center CSU (7 Points)

Hunter Maldonado, sophomore guard Wyoming (7 Points)

Alphonso Anderson, junior guard USU (5 Points)

Carlton Bragg Jr.,Ā senior forward New Mexico (5 Points)

Lindsey Drew, senior guard Nevada (5 Points)

Justinian Jessup, senior guard Boise State (5 Points)

Seneca Knight, sophomore guard San Jose State (5 Points)

Justin Bean, sophomore forward USU (4 Points)

Marvin Coleman, sophomore guard UNLV (4 Points)

Amauri Hardy, junior guard UNLV (4 Points)

Orlando Robinson, freshman forward Fresno State (4 Points)

David Roddy, freshman guard Colorado State (4 Points)

Isaiah Stevens, freshman guard Colorado StateĀ (4 Points)

Roderick ā€œRJā€ Williams,Ā senior forward Boise State (3 Points)

Corey Manigault, senior forward New Mexico (2 Points)

Jordan Schakel, junior guard SDSU (2 Points)

Donnie Tillman, junior forward UNLV (2 Points)

Abu Kigab, junior forward Boise State (1 Point)

Zane Martin, junior guard UNMĀ (1 Point)

Ryan Swan, senior center Air Force (1 Point)

Yanni Wetzell, senior forward San Diego State (1 Point)

How It Works:Ā

Each person will award 15 points in total to five players and should award it as so:

1st place (Player of the week): 5 pts

2nd place: 4 pts

3rd place: 3 pts

4th place: 2 pts

5th place: 1 pt

The player with the most points total will be our player of the week and we will keep track of the point totals every week so that the player who has the most at the end of the year will receive the Mountain West Wire Player of the Year award. Just copy the players below and type your names above it like we do for the pick them docs we get and award your points.Ā

Now some guys made the list and others didnā€™t. A big thing to think about was consistency throughout the week. Something that hurt some guys was having a decent game one day and a bad one the other day. Guys who made the list had a great game one day and a good one on other days, or good games both days.

This column will come out on Sunday nights or Monday mornings depending on how late some games finish on Sundays.Ā

Kigab leads a hot shooting Boise State over Fresno State on the road.

The Broncos continue dominant play with a win over the Bulldogs.

It was a tale of two standings on Saturday evening, as Fresno State 6-13 (2-6) attempted the upset of Boise State 12-8 (4-4) at home in the Save Mart Center.

Both teams went into Saturday’s game in ties in the conference standings as Boise State was in a two-way tie for fourth with Utah State and Fresno State in a two-way tie of it’s own with San Jose State for sixth. Those current finishes are a bit malleable at this point of the season with a lot of teams hovering just around .500 with a lot of play to go in conference.

And while the Broncos needed a win to help stay in the top half of the Mountain West conference standings, the Bulldogs needed one to help them begin a climb out of the conference’s basement.

The Broncos had a lot to prove going back on the road after a brief stop back in Boise more than a week ago against Utah State where they pulled off an amazing 18 point comeback with a little over four minutes left in regulation to seal the win overtime against the Aggies.

It’s a win that gave the program momentum in their seven day break that followed but Boise State hasn’t exactly fared well on the road with a 1-6 away record versus a 9-1 at home.

The Broncos played well on both sides of the ball, keeping the Bulldogs to under 60 points and playing the way they needed to on the road with a 34-point win over Fresno State with four of their five starters scoring 14 points or higher. Boise State is as good as any when Derrick Alston Jr. and Justinian Jessup get some help from their teammates.

When that happens plus flat out good looking basketball like they played tonight, watch out. Junior forward Abu Kigab who joined this Bronco squad mid season after transferring over from Oregon last year has been just the contributor they’ve needed to make them the dominant team we saw tonight. The St. Catherines, ON native had 23 points on the night, looking comfortable picking apart the Bulldogs defense and creating motion in the Bronco’s offense that got others involved as well.

Jessup ended the night with 19 points and 8 rebounds on 5/10 shooting from beyond the arc, playing a whopping 37 minutes for Leon Rice and company.

Fresno State heads on the road next week after suffering two straight losses while struggling to find consistency with a roster that looks a lot different then last’s years. The home team struggled as a whole shooting 37% from the field and just 25% from three.

Senior guard Noah Blackwell was the only Bulldog in double-figures on the night with 14 points. They also struggled with ball security with a turnover ratio of 0.22 and only 4 assists the entire game. As previously mentioned this is a bit of a rebuilding year in Fresno but with talented freshman with loads of potential (two examples below), fans shouldn’t get down on the program just yet and maybe just wait games like this out.

Up Next,Ā

Boise State:

The Broncos stay home on Wednesday as they welcome San Jose State at into Extramile Arena at 7:00 PM MT. The Spartans have had a flair for upsets this season and look at the Broncos as just another potential number in their win column.

Fresno State:

Next week takes Fresno State on the road once again as the Bulldogs head back to Colorado to take on the Air Force Academy on Tuesday night at 7:00 PM. The Falcons are dangerous at home in Clune Arena and are 6-4 there this season.

The Mountain West conference’s best players according to class.Ā

With the month of February on the horizon and a month even non-college basketball fans around the country know just beyond it. It’s time to take a look at the conference’s top players and their individual performances so far while spotlighting them based on class.

The conference as a whole is in different shape than it was last year, with seven teams enjoying records above .500 and of course San Diego State sitting at atop the conference with a No. 4 ranking nationally and an undefeated season to boot.

Players up and down the stat sheet contribute to that success but some you might never notice or hear about because maybe they aren’t in the starting lineup or they don’t lead the team in scoring but are just as crucial to that team’s success just the same. While these rankings are meant to showcase just that it will remind you of some names you know and maybe some you didn’t.

Letting you see which guys are soon to be in your team’s past (i.e.) seniors or juniors and those who will play a key role in their futures.

If you haven’t checked out our first edition of these rankings released at the onset of December after a strong showing from Mountain West team’s in the month of November you can do so here. Things have changed a bit since then and the second edition of Head of the classĀ reflects that.

The Nevada Wolf Pack return to action on Saturday afternoon as they host the New Mexico Lobos at Lawlor Events Center in Reno.

The Wolf Pack are coming into this contest against the Lobos fresh off of an impressive performance as they defeated UNLV 86-72 on Wednesday night. In that contest against the Rebels, the Wolf Pack shined on offense due to the stellar guard play of Jalen Harris, Lindsey Drew and Jazz Johnson.

In the game against UNLV, Harris led the Wolf Pack in scoring with 28 points in the winning effort. Jazz Johnson and Lindsey Drew also contributed with 19 and 15 points respectively in the win over the Rebels. Nevada played a stellar offensive game against UNLV as they made 11 three pointers and shot 42 percent from the three point line. On defense the Wolf Pack held the Rebels to just 35.9 percent from the field and put the clamps on UNLV defensively in the win on Wednesday night.Ā

The Wolf Pack are facing a New Mexico Lobos team that is coming off a 86-59 win over San Jose State on Tuesday night that ended the Lobos two-game losing streak. The Lobos are a talented offensive team as they lead the Mountain West in scoring offense and are ranked third in KenPomā€™s advanced metrics as they are averaging 80.2 points per gameĀ  and the Lobos lead the league in field goal percentage at 49.7 percent.

The Lobos have four players on the roster who are averaging 10 or more points per game this season. New Mexico guard JaQuan Lyle is the leading scorer as he is averaging 17.1 points per game and he also leads the Lobos in assists at 4.8 per game.Ā

Along with Lyle, Corey Manigault (12ppg), Zane Martin (10.1 ppg) and Makuach Maluach ( ten points per game) are the other three players who average double figures in scoring for the Lobos. The Lobos scoring offense ( and their ability to get to the free throw line as they are averaging about 25 free throw attempts per game) will be a big challenge for Nevada on Saturday.

Between these two talented offenses and the fact that Nevada head coach Steve Alford is looking for his 600th win against the Lobos, a school he used to coach. This contest between Nevada and New Mexico looks to be a fun, high scoring contest.
