North Texas (1-3) vs Middle Tennessee (1-4) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why North Texas Will Win

The passing game continues to be fantastic.

The offense leads Conference USA in yards per game averaging 550 yards per game with a league-high 347 passing yards per game.

The downfield attack is there with 305 yards or more through the air in all four games with Austin Aune finding his groove. He might not be all that accurate – completing 56% of his passes – but he’s averaging 8.8 yards per throw.

The Middle Tennessee run defense has been the bigger problem so far, but when teams have tried to throw, the success follows.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Middle Tennessee Will Win

The Blue Raiders are starting to get better. It hasn’t been easy, and it’s been a brutally rough start, but the passing game is starting to kick in for an offense that’s playing up to its potential.

There are too many turnovers and too many missed opportunities, but halfway through the campaign it might be when everything turns a corner after the win over FIU.

On the other side, the defense hasn’t been totally miserable after a rough first few games. The run defense has been okay against the teams that don’t have dominant ground games – North Texas doesn’t have a dominant ground game – and it’s been okay at limiting the big plays down the field.

And …

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

What’s Going To Happen

North Texas couldn’t stop you and a few friends for throwing for 300 yards.

Middle Tennessee can move the ball however it wants to in what should be a wild and crazy shootout. Expect the two teams to combine for 1,000 yards and a whole lot of fun, big plays with the defenses taking the day off.

Middle Tennessee (0-4) vs FIU (0-1) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Middle Tennessee Will Win

Yeah, Middle Tennessee is 0-4, but it can’t catch much of a break. The team is close, but it can’t come up with the big plays at the right time to finally get a win. However, the offense is starting to work.

The passing game is clicking, QB Asher O’Hara is playing well, and the turnovers finally slowed down after having massive issues in the first three games.

The FIU defense got ripped apart by Liberty in the 36-34 loss in the opener – the Blue Raider passing game should work.

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why FIU Will Win

Middle Tennessee really does have a problem with turnovers. For all of the good things the offense does, the nine giveaways in the first three games were a killer. The team was finally able to go a game without a turnover, and it still lost to WKU 20-17.

FIU didn’t play all that well in the loss to Liberty, and it still almost pulled off the win. The offense line did a good job for the running game, D’vonte Price ran for 148 yards and two scores, and there weren’t any turnovers.

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

What’s Going To Happen

FIU will be a +2 in turnover margin, Middle Tennessee will put up a ton of yards without the points to match, and Butch Davis will get the win in the home opener.

WKU (0-2) vs Middle Tennessee (0-3) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why WKU Will Win

Tyrrell Pigrome has been good.

The former Maryland quarterback stepped into the WKU offense and leads the team in rushing, hasn’t thrown a pick yet, and has been the playmaker for an offense that’s still not as productive as it needs to be, but isn’t bad.

The Hilltoppers have to hope for Middle Tennessee to continue its issues.

The Blue Raider offense finally started to move against UTSA, but the turnovers and mistakes continue to come with nine giveaways in three games with eight penalties last week. But …

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Middle Tennessee Will Win

The Middle Tennessee offense started to work.

It was obviously off in the opener against Army, and it misfired way too much in the blowout loss to Troy. It might have been another loss, but with 563 yards, a big passing day from Asher O’Hara, and enough production to think that this all might turn around fast.

WKU doesn’t really score. The team has only managed more than 28 points three times in the last 16 games and more than 24 just four times in the last 15. On the other side, WKU is coming off a horrible games against the run in the loss to Liberty – the Blue Raiders have to get going early on the ground – but …

What’s Going To Happen

WKU has marred more than 30 points just three times in the last 19 games, and one of those was against Middle Tennessee in last year’s 31-26 win.

The Blue Raiders are on the verge of finally getting a win, but WKU is a whole lot better than it showed last week against Liberty, at least defensively.

Middle Tennessee won’t run like Liberty did.

Middle Tennessee (0-2) vs UTSA (2-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Middle Tennessee Will Win

The UTSA defense hasn’t been any sort of a rock against the run, and Middle Tennessee has to get something going on the ground.

The Blue Raiders want to move the ball with a quick passing attack and good tempo, but nothing has worked so far with just 162 yards on the ground in the first two games and no consistency through the air.

UTSA got picked apart by Texas State’s Tyler Vitt for 346 yards and four scores in the 51-48 loss a few weeks ago, and struggled against the SFA air attack last week. If Middle Tennessee was ever going to jump-start its season, this would be the week.

Why UTSA Will Win

The Middle Tennessee lines have been miserable.

Army running for 340 yards and five touchdowns is one thing – that’s Army – but Troy was able to rip it up for 240 yards and three scores, too. UTSA’s Sincere McCormick has rushed for 295 yards and a score in two games, the Roadrunner ground attack is able to control games early on, and it should be able keep the Middle Tennessee offense off the field.

And …

What’s Going To Happen

UTSA will generate a pass rush. Middle Tennessee hasn’t been able to find anything that consistently works offensively, and it’s going to get hit by a Roadrunner offense that might not be consistent, but will at least it’s working.

Troy (0-0) vs Middle Tennessee (0-1) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Troy Will Win

When we last saw Middle Tennessee, absolutely nothing was working.

Army’s running game was dominating in the 42-0 Knight win, Middle Tennessee couldn’t move the ball a lick, and it was one really, really ugly performance.

Troy hasn’t hit the field yet, but new QB Gunnar Watson has a loaded receiving corps to work with and a good ground game to rely on. Assuming that Middle Tennessee is able to get the offense going again after having time to regroup, the Trojans won’t have any issues whatsoever keeping up the pace. But …

Why Middle Tennessee Will Win

Can the Troy defense show up?

The offense was able to score and score some more, but only to see the defense letdown time and again. The Trojans have a pass rush, but it’s going to be possible to bomb away on the secondary.

The entire Blue Raider team had a bad game. QB Asher O’Hara is too good to struggle that much again, and he should be able to get free against a revamped front four on an overhauled Troy defense. If he’s struggling, Chase Cunningham is a good option who’ll get his shot again – he was one of the few bright spots against Army.

Middle Tennessee isn’t going to finish with 184 yards of total offense again. However …

What’s Going To Happen

Troy might have a whole lot of defensive issues, but the offensive side will make up for them with a balanced attack that should be able to keep the pressure on all game long. As long as Watson is steady, the Sun Belt will get another good road win against a Blue Raider team that’s already struggling with injuries.

5. Conference USA 2020 Preview: The League Has Found Its Niche

We know what Conference USA is in the college football world.

It’s certainly not going to be like the American Athletic Conference and start inviting itself into a club without the password, and it’s not quite as strong as the Mountain West, but it’s ahead of the MAC and Sun Belt.

And that’s just fine. The league is going to be plenty fun where it is, especially this season.

It proved itself here and there last year – WKU whacked around Arkansas, and Louisiana Tech stunned Miami in the Independence Bowl – but assuming it’ll be a self-contained conference in this craziest of seasons, it’s equipped to stand out from the pack even without all the dates against the Power Fivers.

It’s set up for a good season with the potential for two terrific division races.

[jwplayer zttcjcuk]

The power is mostly in the East with Florida Atlantic, WKU and Marshall all good enough to win it, and with Middle Tennessee and FIU right there with a shot to knocking off the Owls for the top spot. The West has killers up top in UAB, Louisiana Tech and Southern Miss in what should be a whale of a three-way battle.

As always, though, Conference USA has it’s issues with the bottom teams. To get into the discussion to be better than the Mountain West, the league needs UTEP, UTSA and Rice to be more than roadkill for the top teams. It would help if Old Dominion bounced back from a rough year.

[lawrence-related id=516260]

There should be around nine, maybe ten teams all good enough play with everyone else. Plenty of teams have a shot, several young and new coaches are joining the fun to go along with the elder statesmen, and most of all, this will be among the competitive and unpredictable leagues going.
