Michigan vs Maryland Game Preview

Why Maryland Will Win

The Terp passing game is clicking, and it’s by far the toughest attack Michigan has seen so far.

Taulia Tagovailoa has been in total command, hitting 77% of his passes for 895 yards and six touchdowns with two picks. The receiving combination of Rakim Jarrett, Jeshaun Jones, and TE Corey Dyches has been fantastic, the running game is averaging over six yards per carry, and there aren’t any misfires when the O gets its shot at scoring.

The defense is just okay, but it finally started taking the ball away with three turnovers forced in the 34-27 win over SMU, and the pressure is going to be on the Michigan offensive side now because …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why Michigan Will Win

You wanted to see JJ McCarthy as the main man, Michigan fans, and now you got him.

With Cade McNamara getting hurt in the win over UConn, now the star No. 1B gets to run the attack. He’ll have to prove he can do the job full-time without making a slew of mistakes, but he’ll run better, he’s been fantastic so far when he’s had his chances – hitting 88% of his throws for 473 yards and three touchdowns with no picks – and he doesn’t have to do it all.

The Michigan offensive line is even better than the 2021 version, with the running game ripping defenses to shreds, the pass protection has been fine, and there’s no real worry against a Maryland defense that doesn’t get into the backfield enough and hasn’t been a rock against the run.

Yeah, Michigan has been great so far against three very, very, very bad teams, and …

Week 4 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Yeah, Michigan hasn’t seen anything like the Maryland offense, but on the other side, Maryland hasn’t dealt with anything like the power that’s about to come from the Michigan ground game.

The Wolverines have been building toward this, building and reworking over the first three games in what amounted to glorified scrimmages. Tagovailoa will be good, and Maryland will have its moments, but the Wolverines will ground and pound their way to a good win.

Michigan vs Hawaii Game Preview

Why Hawaii Will Win

Eventually this passing game is going to work.

It’s been a rough start for the Rainbow Warriors – they just don’t have the guys – but the ball is being spread around, the yards are going to come, and everything needs a little bit of time.

The two games of work so far got the passing parts time, now the interceptions have to stop, the offense has to speed up, and when this clicks – and it will at some point under head coach Timmy Chang – look out. And …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Michigan Will Win

Okay, I’ll quit stalling.

Hawaii was gutted after the tumultuous offseason and it hasn’t been remotely close to being competitive so far.

Vanderbilt rolled at will in a 63-10 win in Honolulu, and then struggled a wee bit against Elon. Western Kentucky had to fight with Austin Peay, and then came up with a 49-17 blowout over Hawaii last week.

The Rainbow Warrior offense will eventually be okay, but the lines aren’t even close.

Michigan could run for 400 yards if it wanted to.

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Michigan is going to run for 400 yards as it’s trying to be nice.

Both quarterbacks – JJ McCarthy and Cade McNamara – will spend their afternoon handing the ball off over and over and over again, and the Hawaii defense won’t have any sort of luck holding up.

The Wolverines will get DEEP into the bench in the second half.

Michigan vs Colorado State Game Preview

Why Colorado State Will Win

How fast can the Colorado State offense get up to speed?

It made a huge push this offseason getting head coach Jay Norvell from Colorado State along with every decent transfer it could possibly grab.

Now the O will wing it all around the yard, the D that got into the backfield on a regular basis – it was among the best in the country in tackles for loss – will be dangerous again, and there might be just the right mix of things happening to throw Michigan a curveball.

Of course the Wolverines are more talented overall, but they’re mixing in a slew of new parts defensively and Colorado State is about to let it rip in a nothing-to-lose sort of way.

Week 1 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Michigan Will Win

Colorado State should be better in a hurry, and it should be dangerous, but it also could’ve used a few games against Paycheck State to get all of the new parts together.

Everyone is trying to figure it all out, and everyone has new players in key roles in the transfer portal era, but Colorado State has around 12 transfer starters and several new players – and the new coaching staff – getting their first run against the defending Big Ten champs.

The biggest issue will be on the lines. Michigan might have lost some stars off the defensive front, but the offensive line has the potential to be special, the other side is more than okay, and here’s where the transfer portal is a problem.

The offensive line – in theory – takes the longest to gel, and Colorado State is all but starting over. Combine that with a freshman quarterback in Clay Millen, and the Wolverine defense should feast.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Saturday

What’s Going To Happen

Colorado State will have its moments, but Michigan will keep the gameplan easy – pound, pound, and pound.

Yeah, the Ram defense will still be able to make plays in the backfield, but it’s going against a Michigan line – even with a few new guys – that should be just as strong as the one that led the nation in fewest tackles for loss allowed.

It might not always be explosive, but the Wolverines will get out to a good start, stumble a bit, and then own the clock the rest of the way.

5 College Football Power Five Rebound Teams For 2022

Which teams in the Power Five conferences should rebound from a mediocre 2021 and make a whole lot of noise?

Which teams in the Power Five conferences should bounce back big after a disappointing 2022? Here are five teams that should rebound.

You just knew 2021 would bounce back to normal – and it did, at least until the bowl season.

2020 was such an insane outlier of a year in every possible way thanks to the imbalanced schedules, teams that had to tap out, and with the transfer portal starting to take off.

Into the void stepped Iowa State and Indiana as they got a whole lot of preseason love and affection, and then … pffffffffft. The air quickly went out of the balloon for them and several other programs.

On the flip side of that were the teams that fizzled in 2020 but went back to their normal selves, and in some cases, were better.

For the most part, last year’s 5 Teams That Will Rebound was close to the pin.

Louisville? Not so much in a 6-7 season, but Tennessee (compared to the expectations and the 3-7 2020, boom), Penn State (smaller bang), Wisconsin (medium boom), and Michigan (an earth-shattering, illudium Q-36 explosive space modulator producing ka-BOOOM)? Yeah, they all improved.

Here are five teams that should rebound from a relatively down 2021. The list is based on last year’s preseason ranking going from the bottom up, starting with …

College Football Teams That Will Rebound

Texas Longhorns

2021 Preseason Ranking
AP (21), Coaches (19)
Final Record: 5-7

What Went Wrong?

Texas continued its long-standing policy of being a tackling-optional football school.

The offense was good enough – even if it was a tad inconsistent – but the defense finished eighth in the Big 12, Oklahoma QB Caleb Williams took away the run D’s purpose in life, and meaningful third down stops were a rumor.

Things aren’t exactly working out when you’re giving up 57 points at home in a loss to Kansas.

[lawrence-related id=548943]

Why 2022 Will Be Better: Returning Talent

Steve Sarkisian’s second year should be a whole lot stronger for one big reason – the offense might be Texas defense-proof.

The Longhorn D will be better. The linebacking corps has experience to go along with a nice transfer portal get in Diamone Tucker-Dorsey from James Madison, the line at least has guys who look the part of big-time talents, and the secondary could be one of the team’s hidden gems.

But it doesn’t matter because the O should go ballistic.

Don’t discount the concept that Ohio State transfer QB Quinn Ewers might be everything Longhorn fans are hoping for Arch Manning – he’s not coming aboard until next year – to be and more.

Getting WR Isaiah Neyor from Wyoming to go along with Xavier Worthy and Jordan Whittington is almost unfair, and RB Bijan Robinson should be in an NFL camp right now.

Why 2022 Will Be Better: Schedule
Texas Preview | Top 10 PlayersSchedule Analysis

The schedule really wasn’t the issue last season, and this time around there’s the Week 2 two-piece coming from Alabama. However, the Baylor game is in Austin, the first seven games of the year are in the state of Texas, and having to go to Kansas State and Kansas isn’t that bad.

It’s not like having to go to Georgia and LSU, which the program might have to do in the near future.

Big Ten Preseason Predictions For Every Game: Preview 2022

Big Ten preseason predictions for every game, predicted order of finish, and lookahead to the 2022 season.

You want the predictions for the 2022 Big Ten football season? It’s not all that hard …

Ohio State is going to be fantastic, and now it’s mad.

We got the Michigan curveball last year. It’s rebuilding, but it’s still going to be strong. Michigan State and Penn State are good, Wisconsin is really good, Iowa is Iowa, and others like Maryland and Nebraska should rise up and have good seasons.

Who can catch the Buckeyes?

More interesting will be a few strange twists and turns. Most of the solid teams can hang with or beat anyone else in the conference, and on the right day an Illinois or Northwestern or Rutgers should have the formula to pull off something fun.

There are two more years before USC and UCLA come aboard. That’s all anyone will be talking about, but until then, this season should be entertaining – at least outside of what OSU will probably do.

Michigan Wolverines Preview 2022

It was the right thing to say if you’re Jim Harbaugh and your wonderful breakthrough season just hit a brick wall against the eventual national champion.

The line after losing to Georgia 34-11 in the Orange Bowl was that this was all just the beginning.

Beating Ohio State, winning the Big Ten Championship, going to the College Football Playoff – that’s all supposed to be expected at Michigan, and for a long time that seemed just out of reach.

The 2018 team was right there until Ohio State hung 62 on the board. The 2016 team was in the mix, too, until the Buckeyes had other ideas, and the 2015 version would’ve at least gone into the final weekend against that team from Columbus – forgetting the 42-13 loss – with a shot at big things had the roof not caved in against Michigan State.

So yes and no. 2021 might not have been the beginning because – for what Michigan was able to do – the program has at least seen the base camp near the top of the mountain only to have Ohio State blocking the path. But yes, that has to be the start of Michigan not only doing all of that again, but taking it further.

Last year might have shown what Michigan is capable of, but it also proved that it doesn’t yet have it to be among the Alabamas, and the other seasonal SEC superstars, and the Ohio States as a true annual threat.

Cincinnati got to the College Football Playoff, too.

Yeah, the team had a great no-panic style, amazing defense, tough attitude for the ground game, and an overall even keel, and …

Ohio State was a wee bit down, at least defensively.

Everything has to align perfectly for just about everyone but Alabama to get into the College Football Playoff, but because it’s Michigan, and Harbaugh, and that most self-congratulatory of Leaders and Best programs it’s always going to be under more scrutiny.

Combine all of the factors of being Michigan with the real world reality that Harbaugh would be in the NFL right now if the league didn’t pivot to the lowball cheap for its head coaches, and the team is in more about a refresh than a launching point.

And that’s okay – for now.

Ohio State went from being miserable and grouchy about everything to being miserable and grouchy about everything and ultra-motivated.

The pressure is all on that side, meaning Harbaugh gets a wee bit of a free pass for the first time in his era. He proved he could beat Ohio State, and he proved he could take Michigan to the big-time – he proved it really is possible.

Now it’s his angle to put together another strong team with new coordinators and a whole slew of new parts, all while letting Ohio State press on through the unrelenting weight and 24/7 obsession of having to live with the stain of a loss to That Team Up North.

The Wolverine fan base obviously wants to win every year – and Harbaugh had better beat Michigan State this time around – but for this one season, the program can bask a little bit.

Michigan is in a nice spot. It’s going to be good, the monkeys are off all the backs for the time being, and the schedule works out really, really, really well to gear back up for a relatively-speaking-compared-to-the-other-powers under-the-radar good season.

In other words, whatever. You’re Michigan. Do it again.
