Gators a No. 7 seed in CBS Sports bracketology at regular-season end

Florida gained a spot in Jerry Palm’s bracketology after beating ‘Bama but also losing at Vandy.

The final week of the regular season for Florida basketball was a rollercoaster ride, stretching from the highs of the win over the Alabama Crimson Tide at home and the lows from the road loss at the Vanderbilt Commodores. Nonetheless, the Gators wrapped up a successful season that has them heading to the Big Dance for the first time since 2021.

Following the final week of action, CBS Sports’ Jerry Palm released his latest bracketology update, in which Todd Golden’s team rose a spot to No. 7 while shifting over to the Midwest Region. They are now matched up with the No. 10 Nebraska Cornhuskers in the opening round, with the No. 2 Baylor Bears and No. 14 Sam Houston Bearkats in Memphis, Tennessee.

The Southeastern Conference is also represented by the top team in the West Region, the Tennessee Volunteers, followed by Alabama (No. 4, East), the Kentucky Wildcats (No. 4, Midwest), Auburn Tigers (No. 5, South), South Carolina Gamecocks (No. 5, West) and Mississippi State Bulldogs (No. 10, East). The Texas A&M Aggies are among the first four out.

Florida is a No. 6 seed in the Southeastern Conference Tournament, giving it a first-round bye and matching the Gators up with the winner of Game 2 on Thursday, March 14, inside Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee. Tipoff is slated for a late 9:30 p.m. ET start on the SEC Network.

Florida hangs tight in The Athletic’s regular-season-ending bracket watch

Florida did not lose any ground in The Athletic’s bracket watch after the Vandy loss.

Todd Golden’s team did not get the finish they wanted to the regular-season schedule, falling on the road in a last-minute loss to the Vanderbilt Commodores, 79-78, which left a smudge on an otherwise fantastic second-half run.

Fortunately for Florida, the defeat did not affect its seeding in the SEC Tournament and hardly sent a ripple through the NCAA Tournament projections.

The Athletic’s Brian Bennett recently released his updated men’s basketball bracket watch, keeping the Gators a No. 6 in the East Region. The Orange and Blue are lined up to face the No. 11 Texas Christian Horned Frogs in the opening round held in Brooklyn, New York, where the No. 3 Duke Blue Devils will also face off with the No. 14 Vermont Catamounts.

Looking around the Southeastern Conference, Bennett’s bracket also includes the top-seeded Tennessee Volunteers, along with the Alabama Crimson Tide (No. 4), Kentucky Wildcats (No. 4), Auburn Tigers (No. 5), South Carolina Gamecocks (No. 5), Mississippi State Bulldogs (No. 10) and Texas A&M Aggies (No. 11); the Aggies are also among the last four in.

Photo Gallery: Oregon closes the season with a win on Senior Night

A photo gallery of the best images from the Oregon Ducks 2024 men’s basketball Senior Night.

On Saturday, the Oregon Ducks men’s basketball team played their final 2023-24 regular season game in Matthew Knight Arena, beating the Utah Utes 66-65 on Senior Night. On Thursday, the Ducks will tip off their first game of the Pac-12 tournament, against the winner of the UCLA vs. Oregon State first-round matchup.

Both teams struggled to put the ball in the basket in Saturday’s game, but because of the defensive battle, the score of the game was tight throughout. The Ducks got their biggest spark midway through the second half when N’Faly Dante finished at the rim on three consecutive possessions, drawing and-one fouls on two of the baskets.

Saturday wasn’t just another game for Oregon, it was also Senior Night. The Ducks senior class includes N’Faly Dante, Jermaine Couisnard, Keeshawn Barthelemy, Kario Oquendo, and Mahamadou Diawara, as well as walk-ons Gabe Reichle and Caleb McCloud. Since the Ducks are likely bound for the NIT again this season, this probably won’t be these senior’s last game at Matthew Knight.

Below are the best images from the Oregon Ducks’ 2023-24 Senior Night win over Utah.

Florida falls out of CBS Sports power rankings after losing to Vanderbilt

The Vandy loss sent the Gatos packing in CBS Sports’ power rankings.

A strong second-half surge by the Florida basketball team came to a screeching halt on Saturday as the Gators failed to finish the season on a high note. Instead, the Vanderbilt Commodores eked out a 79-78 victory on its home floor to give Todd Golden’s team their only Quadrant 3 loss this season.

CBS Sports’ Gary Parrish has been tracking the top teams in college basketball this season with his top 25-and-one power rankings, which had the Orange and Blue at No. 25 in the previous update. Now, thanks to the defeat at the hands of the second-worse team record-wise in the Southeastern Conference, Florida is no longer among the upper echelon of schools in his rankings.

The Gators are a No.

Florida falls in KenPom following regular-season-ending loss at Vandy

The Gators are still a top-30 team according to KenPom but the Vandy loss put them right at the cusp.

A fantastic second half of the season for Florida basketball came to a close on Saturday afternoon after the Vanderbilt Commodores hung around long enough to seize a 79-78 victory from the visiting Gators. It was not the finish the fans had hoped for, but fortunately, it should not hurt the program’s prospects too much heading into the postseason.

Following the loss, the Pomeroy College Basketball Ratings dropped the Orange and Blue from its No. 25 overall ranking in our previous update to No. 30, putting them between the No. 29 Dayton Flyers and the No. 31 St. John’s Red Storm.

The Pomeroy rankings use adjusted efficiency margin — the difference between adjusted offensive efficiency and adjusted defensive efficiency — to rank all teams.

Golden’s gang now has a margin of plus-17.85 (down 0.74 points) which means the team is expected to score 17.85 more points than the average opponent. They are now ranked 16th in adjusted offensive efficiency (119.4) while also losing a spot in adjusted defensive efficiency, now ranking at 81st (101.6).

KenPom also has Florida’s overall strength of schedule rated at plus-9.34, which is 48th in the nation; its non-conference schedule rating received a score of plus-1.97 which has the Gators at No. 134.

Basketball Power Index unfazed by Florida’s loss at Vanderbilt

Florida actually rose one spot in ESPN’s BPI after the tough Vandy road loss.

The road woes returned for Florida basketball on Saturday in Nashville as the Gators were unable to put away a tenacious Vanderbilt Commodores team, allowing the home squad to hang around long enough to seize a 79-78 last-minute victory.

In ESPN’s latest Basketball Power Index update following the loss, the Orange and Blue actually rose a spot from our previous update to No. 26; it also represents a one-spot increase from Saturday’s pregame rankings. That puts Todd Golden’s team between the No. 25 Villanova Wildcats and No. 27 TCU Horned Frogs.

Florida’s BPI rating — a measurement of a team’s true strength moving forward — fell 0.1 points to 11.9 since the last update. The offensive BPI fell 0.2 points to 8.4 while the defensive BPI inched up 0.1 points to 3.5.

Florida takes tumble in NET rankings after Vanderbilt road loss

The Gators fell out of the top 30 teams in the NET rankings following Sunday evening’s loss.

It was not the finish to the regular season that the Gator Nation expected on Saturday when the Vanderbilt Commodores stood their ground at home and outlasted Florida, 79-78. A double-digit favorite coming in, Todd Golden’s team once again struggled on the road and showed a great deal of weakness in the second half.

Following the loss, the Orange and Blue fell seven spots from No. 28 on game day to No. 35 overall in the NET rankings; the previous update after the Alabama Crimson Tide win had it at No. 26. Todd Golden’s team now sits between the No. 34 Florida Atlantic Owls and the No. 36 Colorado State Rams.

Here’s how the quadrant system breaks things up:

  • Quadrant 1: Home 1-30, Neutral 1-50, Away 1-75
  • Quadrant 2: Home 31-75, Neutral 51-100, Away 76-135
  • Quadrant 3: Home 76-160, Neutral 101-200, Away 135-240
  • Quadrant 4: Home 161-353, Neutral 201-353, Away 241-353

The Gators are 4-7 against Quadrant 1 opponents, 3-2 against Quadrant 2 opponents, 8-1 against Quadrant 3 opponents and 6-0 against Quadrant 4 opponents. They hold a 21-10 record overall and an 11-7 final mark in Southeastern Conference play.

That lone Quadrant 3 loss might come back to bite the Gators when the NCAA Tournament Selection Committee makes their final decision on the seedings.

Florida is a No. 6 seed in the SEC Tournament, giving it a first-round bye and matching the Gators up with the winner of Game 2 on Thursday, March 14, inside Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee. Tipoff is slated for a late 9:30 p.m. ET start on the SEC Network.

Report: Oregon basketball in talks to participate in NIL-driven in-season tournament

The Oregon Ducks are reportedly one of several teams in talks about participating in an in-season basketball tournament in 2024.

With name, image, and likeness currently altering the landscape of college sports, it seems that each week brings a news item that we haven’t experienced before, whether it be in basketball or football.

The latest news that came out this week is that a new in-season tournament could be coming to college basketball, which will potentially offer up to $2 million in NIL deals to participating teams. The first news of this in-season tournament was reported by Front Office Sports.

According to On3, the Oregon Ducks are one of the teams who have been in talks of participating in this tournament, along with big-name schools like Alabama, Duke, Kansas, Syracuse, and Virginia, among others.

The tournament is reportedly going to be held in Las Vegas at MGM Arena over Thanksgiving weekend, starting in 2024.

A source told On3 that every team in the tournament is guaranteed at least $1 million in NIL dollars for participating. The money will either be funneled to participating school’s NIL collective, boosters or a school’s NIL entity. Programs will distribute the cash at their own will. The only caveat is dollars must go to the current team.

There are still a lot of details to sort out over the coming months, but you have to think that it would be a nice recruiting chip for Dana Altman and his team to be able to tell prospective recruits or transfer portal players that they have a chance for a big pay-day by joining the Ducks going into the 2024 season.

Duke and the Cameron Crazies got one last game at the beloved stadium on Saturday night.

The game also served as senior night, since it was the last home game of the season. Four-year starter Jeremy Roach was honored for his exceptional Duke career, and Ryan Young and Spencer Hubbard shared the moment as they stood with their teammates and framed jerseys.

Here are the best photos from Duke’s last home game of the 2023-24 season.
