Why Florida Atlantic Will Win

At the very least, the team is rested and fresh with just one game played so far and no games since October 3rd. The offensive line had a good first game in the loss to Charlotte, there weren’t any giveaways, and QB Nick Tronti had a decent first game.

The Indiana transfer only hit 11-of-22 passes, but he threw for two scores and ran for a team-high 94 yards and a score. Marshall has a pass rush, but it doesn’t make a whole lot of plays behind the line. The more time Tronti gets, the better.

Why Marshall Will Win

The Herd have been air-tight so far.

They’ve only turned it over three times, they’re phenomenal on third downs on both sides of the ball, and they’ve been great at maintaining a near-perfect offensive balance – rushing for 854 yards and throwing for 897.

The downfield passing game has been great, but Marshall might make this easy – run, control the tempo, and rely on the terrific midrange passing game to keep things moving.

Marshall has kept the ball for over 34 minutes a game. FAU had it for just over 22 minutes against Charlotte.

What’s Going To Happen

Marshall is rolling.

QB Grant Wells has been great, RB Brenden Knox and the ground attack have rocked, and the lines have been outstanding. FAU is going to be good as the season goes on and the team can finally get going, but Marshall is playing too well.

Why Marshall Will Win

Marshall has been fantastic so far. especially on defense.

The Herd have been dominant on third downs, they lead the nation in scoring D allowing just 21 points in three games, and they’re clamping down with the best overall defense in Conference USA.

Okay, do whacking Eastern Kentucky and Western Kentucky might not be any big deal, but holding Appalachian State to seven points is special.

The offense might not be full of firepower, but the running game has been fantastic – averaging close to five yards per carry with nine touchdowns – and it’s not giving the ball away enough to stress the D. But …

Why Louisiana Tech Will Win

The Louisiana Tech defense has been terrific against the run. It got plowed on for 188 yards and four touchdowns by BYU, but that’s been the lone problem so far.

The offense hasn’t gotten rolling yet, but it has the potential to be a whole lot stronger with a receiving corps that’s been fine, but hasn’t been unleashed like it will be at some point.

Marshall has a good pass rush, but it doesn’t generate a whole lot of tackles for loss. Give this Louisiana Tech offense time, and the chains will keep moving – the Bulldogs are converting 44% of their third down chances.

What’s Going To Happen

Marshall is playing way too well.

The defense is too good, the offense is too balanced, and Louisiana Tech is too shaky despite being 3-1. The Bulldogs are at home, but the Herd will control the game from the start.

Why Marshall Will Win

The running game has been fantastic in the two wins.

Running for 282 yards against Eastern Kentucky wasn’t any big whoop, but Brendan Knox and the ground attack rumbling over Appalachian State for 216 team yards was a huge deal in the 17-7 upset.

As continues to be the issue with WKU over the last few years, the team just can’t score. That doesn’t mean it can’t win – it came up with a 20-17 victory over Middle Tennessee last week – but getting past the 24-point mark is like pulling teeth.

If the Herd can get out to a hot start, it can rely on the ground attack to close this.

Why WKU Will Win

WKU might not be scoring in bunches, but it’s not screwing up. The team has yet to throw an interception in the first three games, and the two lost fumbles weren’t that big a deal.

Keep things close – WKU is good at doing that. Even if things aren’t working all that well, the Hilltoppers are great at not letting games get out of hand. Marshall isn’t going to run away and hide with this even if it does get out to a hot start.

The biggest key will be the defensive front against that Marshall running game. Liberty ripped through the Hilltoppers for 354 yards on the ground, but there’s enough talent up front to not get gouged for more than four yards per carry.

What’s Going To Happen

Marshall has the balance and the efficiency to pull out a tight battle.

Both defensive fronts can get behind the line, but Marshall will be able to run when needed, and WKU won’t.

Why Appalachian State Will Win

It wasn’t a pretty performance against Charlotte in the 35-20 win, but it was effective.

The defense wasn’t as strong early in the second half as it should’ve been, and  it took too long to put the game away, but the ground game was dynamite.

Zac Thomas and the passing game were fine against the 49ers, but the running game was the star with 308 yards – Marcus Williams and Camerun Peoples each hit the 100-yard mark.

Marshall’s run defense was dominant in a 59-0 win over Eastern Kentucky, but it wasn’t tested after getting up 21-0 right away. App State will test the Herd D right away, but …

Why Marshall Will Win

Is that really the Marshall passing game going forward?

Welcome to Grant Wells, a freshman who hit 16-of-23 passes for 307 yards and four scores with big pass after big pass in the blowout win. The offensive line gave him time, RB Brenden Knox took the pressure off a bit when needed, and the offense exploded.

The defensive front will apply more pressure in the Appalachian State backfield than the Charlotte defense did – which was non-existent – with a linebacking corps that should limit the big, gashing running plays.

If the Herd can force takeaways – Appalachian State turned it over four times last week – they’ll take over the game.

What’s Going To Happen

Expect a terrific battle.

This is a good, explosive Marshall team with the upside and talent to push for the Conference USA title. However, Appalachian State will tighten up the mistakes against Charlotte, will be balanced enough offensively to keep the chains moving, and will come up with yet another strong performance for the Sun Belt.

5. Conference USA 2020 Preview: The League Has Found Its Niche

We know what Conference USA is in the college football world.

It’s certainly not going to be like the American Athletic Conference and start inviting itself into a club without the password, and it’s not quite as strong as the Mountain West, but it’s ahead of the MAC and Sun Belt.

And that’s just fine. The league is going to be plenty fun where it is, especially this season.

It proved itself here and there last year – WKU whacked around Arkansas, and Louisiana Tech stunned Miami in the Independence Bowl – but assuming it’ll be a self-contained conference in this craziest of seasons, it’s equipped to stand out from the pack even without all the dates against the Power Fivers.

It’s set up for a good season with the potential for two terrific division races.

The power is mostly in the East with Florida Atlantic, WKU and Marshall all good enough to win it, and with Middle Tennessee and FIU right there with a shot to knocking off the Owls for the top spot. The West has killers up top in UAB, Louisiana Tech and Southern Miss in what should be a whale of a three-way battle.

As always, though, Conference USA has it’s issues with the bottom teams. To get into the discussion to be better than the Mountain West, the league needs UTEP, UTSA and Rice to be more than roadkill for the top teams. It would help if Old Dominion bounced back from a rough year.

There should be around nine, maybe ten teams all good enough play with everyone else. Plenty of teams have a shot, several young and new coaches are joining the fun to go along with the elder statesmen, and most of all, this will be among the competitive and unpredictable leagues going.
