Baker Mayfield: Relationship with Browns ‘too far gone to mend’

Baker Mayfield told ESPN the relationship with the Browns is irreparable

The Baker Mayfield drama is quickly escalating. Mayfield has formally requested the Browns trade him, and he provided some deeper context to his reasoning via Adam Schefter of ESPN.

“It’s in the mutual interest of both sides for us to move on,” Mayfield said to ESPN. “The relationship is too far gone to mend. It’s in the best interests of both sides to move on.”

This comes on the heels of numerous reports out of Cleveland that the Browns are not going to accommodate Mayfield’s trade request.

All this has come to a head in the aftermath of the Browns’ failed trade pursuit of Texans QB Deshaun Watson. The Browns aggressively pursued Watson and made a presentation to both the Texans and Watson in trying to convince both parties that Cleveland was the best destination for the legally-troubled former Pro Bowler.

Mayfield is coming off an injury-plagued season where he played through both a shoulder and a knee injury that clearly inhibited his performance.

Report: Baker Mayfield has asked the Browns for a trade

Starting QB Baker Mayfield has asked the Browns for a trade in the wake of the team’s pursuit of Deshaun Watson

The other shoe in the Browns failed pursuit of Deshaun Watson has now fallen. Incumbent starting quarterback Baker Mayfield has requested a trade from the team.

The news was first reported by Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network.

Mayfield had previously expressed his feelings about the Browns going after Watson. While the team tried to smooth things over, it appears Mayfield no longer wants to be part of the plan in Cleveland.

The Browns came up empty in the pursuit of Watson. The Houston Texans ruled out the Browns as a trade destination earlier on Thursday, though no trade has been made yet. But the damage to the already rocky relationship with Mayfield has apparently gone too far.

Update: It appears the Browns will not honor Mayfield’s trade request:

Report: Browns view Baker Mayfield as starting QB despite Deshaun Watson pursuit

Does Baker Mayfield still view the Browns as his team?

After a failed attempt to trade for Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson, a quarterback facing 22 civil cases of sexual misconduct, the Cleveland Browns still view Baker Mayfield as their starting quarterback, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.

Mayfield issued a letter to fans last week to show his appreciation for Cleveland amid the uncertainty surrounding his future with the Browns. At that point, he seemed to cast doubt about whether his relationship with the team would remain intact after they searched for another quarterback. But apparently, the Browns informed Mayfield at the NFL combine that they would be doing just that.

It will be fascinating to see if the Browns want to repair their relationship with Mayfield — or part ways with him. It’s possible that after Watson chooses his next team, Mayfield might draw interest on the trade market.

Report: Browns are out of the Deshaun Watson trade talks

The Cleveland Browns have been ruled out of the Deshaun Watson trade talks by the Texans, per a report from Mike Garafolo

The agonizing indecision has finally ended for the Cleveland Browns. After a heavy pursuit for Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson, the Browns are no longer in the running to trade for the polarizing passer.

Per Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network and quickly verified by other sources, the Texans have decided to look in a different direction than Cleveland. The Browns made a substantial offer, though the exact details of the offer are not clear. It is thought to have included three first-round picks and two young players.

Watson does have the no-trade clause at his disposal. The Browns met with Watson and the Texans this week to discuss the possibility of Watson waiving the no-trade clause and how the team would accommodate him.

Watson remains the subject of a civil lawsuit from 22 women who have alleged sexual misconduct against the Pro Bowl quarterback.

What the Browns are getting in Amari Cooper

Our @joshkeatley16 takes a look at what the Browns are getting with the acquisition of Amari Cooper with video proof of the positives:

The Cleveland Browns recently acquired four-time Pro Bowl wide receiver, Amari Cooper from the Dallas Cowboys via trade. in exchange for Cooper, Cleveland gave up a fifth-round selection and the two franchises swapped sixth-rounders as well.

It is no secret that landing a wide receiver this off-season was a major priority for the Browns and this trade gives them an inarguably top 15 wide receiver in the NFL and bonafide number one target. How this affects the 2022 NFL Draft is left to be seen, but it will surely allow some flexibility.

Before diving into how the addition of Cooper changes the draft plans, let’s take a look at his resume up to this point as Cooper has found major success in the NFL. Since entering the league as a first-round selection in 2015, Cooper has been named All-Rookie as well as to the Pro Bowl four times, with the most recent being in 2019. Let’s take a deeper dive though.

Browns keep their offensive line depth with the return of Chris Hubbard

The Browns are bringing back one of their own and keeping their offensive line depth with the return of Hubbard who missed most of last season with a triceps injury:

The Cleveland Browns have lost a few of their players through releases and free agency according to reports so far:

The team seems to be in transition with their offense based on the above moves and the possibility of moving on from quarterback Baker Mayfield. Mayfield’s emotional post to the city of Cleveland on Tuesday night seems to be the final sign of things being done between the two parties.

Not every offensive free agent is leaving Berea, however:

Hubbard has been an important depth player on the team’s offensive line. His triceps injury in early October became more problematic when Jack Conklin got injured and missed the rest of the year also.

James Hudson III was drafted in 2021 to develop behind Conklin and Jedrick Wills. He struggled early but seemed to come on late in the season. Now, the team will have Conklin and Hubbard returning from injuries to go along with Wills, Hudson and Blake Hance to form a deep group at offensive tackle.

Cleveland added Hubbard as their starting right tackle in 2018. While he was replaced by Conklin, he stuck around and played in 11 games in 2020 including five starts. 2022 will be his fifth year with the team.

Rashard Higgins leaves the Browns, expected to sign with Panthers

Hollywood has walked his last red carpet in Cleveland. According to a report, Higgins is headed to Carolina after an interesting six years with the Browns:

The Cleveland Browns have lost some players based on reports of agreements that can become finalized at 4 PM on Wednesday and a few releases:

Cleveland still has Jadeveon Clowney and Ronnie Harrison as starters who have hit the market but have not agreed to a deal elsewhere. While the rumblings that Baker Mayfield could be traded, whether the team acquires Deshaun Watson, are also out there.

Mayfield’s, basically, goodbye letter to Cleveland now is just, most likely, his first as one of his favorite targets is moving on from the Browns:

Higgins had a unique career in Cleveland. Drafted in the fifth round, cut in his second year. Brought back to the practice squad after no team picked him up. Brought back to the main roster shortly after that then signing consecutive one-year deals with the team after reaching free agency in 2019, 2020 and 2021.

For his six-year career, Higgins has caught 137 passes for 1,890 yards and 12 touchdowns. He had a strong connection with Mayfield but never tallied 600 yards or more in a season and topped out at four touchdowns, in two different years.

Nicknamed “Hollywood” before even arriving in Cleveland, fans loved his touchdown celebration of walking the red carpet while his teammates took pictures like they were paparazzi.

With Mayfield’s future seemingly up in the air, perhaps a reunion between the two in Carolina could be in the making.

Browns Anthony Walker to return in 2022 on a one-year deal

While the QB instability rages, the Browns brought back some stable leadership for 2022 and Greg Newsome celebrated on Twitter:

The Cleveland Browns continue their moves as free agency officially opens Wednesday at 4 PM. Legal tampering is taking place between teams and free agents from other teams but none of those deals or trades can be signed until later this afternoon.

Deals between teams and their own free agents can be completed at any time.

So far, the Browns have:

The team is now bringing back one of their own in linebacker Anthony Walker. Cleveland added him from the Indianapolis Colts last year. He was lauded for his leadership and play on the field.

Kimberley A. Martin first reported a deal was close:

Adam Schefter then added that the deal was another one-year deal for $5 million.

In 2021, Walker played in 13 games for the Browns with 113 tackles, two tackles for loss, two passes defended and one sack. Going into 2022, he will continue to pair with Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah as starters with Jacob Phillips, Tony Fields II and Sione Takitaki providing the current depth.

Cornerback Greg Newsome took to Twitter to celebrate the news:

Stability among the ongoing quarterback instability is a good thing for Cleveland.

Report: Browns to release TE Austin Hooper

Browns to release TE Austin Hooper as a post-June 1st move. We broke down why that’s important

In an expected development, the Cleveland Browns are set to release tight end Austin Hooper after two seasons. Per Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the Browns will dedicate the move as a post-June 1st designation.

Hooper is two years into a four-year, $42 million contract that has not worked out well for either party. In 29 games for the Browns, Hooper has caught 84 passes for 780 yards and seven TDs while being an adequate blocker at best. Cleveland recently used the franchise tag on TE David Njoku and also has promising young Harrison Bryant at the position.

The post-June 1st designation is important. It means the Browns cannot use any of the salary cap room created by releasing Hooper until that point. But it costs the Browns considerably less dead cap room for 2022. Using the post-June 1st designation creates $9.5 million in extra cap room for Cleveland, with a dead cap hit of $3.75 million in 2022 and another $7.5 million in 2023. All of that dead cap would hit the books in 2022 without the designation.

The release also means that the Browns will not receive any credit in the compensatory draft pick formula when another team signs Hooper.
