Mohamed Sanu might be a source of hope for Patriots offense

Mohamed Sanu has been limited with an ankle injury, but could make a comeback.

The New England Patriots have stayed positive about the state of the offense. But there’s no escaping the obvious: Over the last four weeks, they’ve regressed while averaging 18 points per game.

It’s becoming clear that they need production in the passing game beyond receiver Julian Edelman and running back James White. Tom Brady has needed help. And there’s one skill player who seems to have fallen out of the public eye: receiver Mohamed Sanu. New England traded a second-round pick for him before the deadline this year, and he quickly looked comfortable in New England’s offense in the Week 9 loss to the Baltimore Ravens when he had 10 catches for 81 yards and a touchdown.

An ankle injury set him back in recent weeks. He was inactive in Week 12 and was clearly on a limited snap count for Week 13. But perhaps New England can expect more from him as he gets healthier and learns more of the Patriots offense.

“It’s more every week, so each week there’s building blocks, and you can add some things or repeat things from previous weeks to improve the execution on them and communication,” Bill Belichick said of Sanu on Friday morning during a press conference at Gillette Stadium. “We’ve made a lot of progress. Definitely headed in the right direction. We’re definitely not there yet either, but we’re gaining ground.”

Sanu’s teammates, particularly the ones who have known him from his days at Rutgers, have touted his athleticism. He was a safety to start his college career, and cornerback Jason McCourty suggested Sanu might have gone in the first round of the NFL draft, had he stayed at the position. But Sanu switched to receiver, and went in the third round of the 2012 draft. His elite athleticism has always made him a compelling slot option, whether with the Cincinnati Bengals, the Atlanta Falcons or the Patriots. But his smarts have been noteworthy as he takes a bigger role in New England.

“He’s been in a couple different systems from what we run, so there’s some carryover, there’s a lot of new things, too,” Belichick said. “He’s a smart kid. He’s experienced. He’s played a lot of football, so a lot of the concepts he’s dealt with before. Terminology and nomenclature. The way it’s presented might be a little bit different.”

There’s a sense of doom and gloom in New England after it suffered a tough loss to the Houston Texans last week. There’s no denying the offense looked unimpressive. But Brady, Belichick and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels have made a habit of turning a disaster zone into a disaster for zone (and man) defenses. If the Patriots are going to put together a turnaround — which is something they seem to do every year — then Sanu could be central in that resurgence.

Bill Belichick explains how Julian Edelman can be a schematic weapon

But week after week, game after game, Julian Edelman plays. And delivers.

New England Patriots fans are well aware receiver Julian Edelman is quarterback Tom Brady’s No. 1 receiver.

But he’s much more than that. Patriots coach Bill Belichick told the media on Friday at Gillette Stadium that Edelman is a crucial part in the offense’s ability to attack an opposing defense’s weaknesses.

“I think there are things that come up from game to game, that if you want to do something with an experienced player that can handle a particular situation you’re trying to attack in that game, he’s a good guy to do it with,” Belichick said of Edelman.

There is no shortage of things Edelman can do for the offense, whether that be where he lines up in multi-receiver sets or the routes he runs from each position.

“I mean we’ve been able to do different things with him over the course of his career, and certainly over the last few years,” Belichick said.

Edelman is on pace to set career highs in every major category. He has 82 receptions for 915 yards and five touchdowns in 12 games this season. Current career highs stand at 1,106 yards (2016), 105 receptions (2013) and seven touchdowns (2015) in his 10 NFL seasons.

His production is perhaps even more impressive due to the fact it’s been an injury-filled season for the 33-year-old receiver.

Edelman was limited in practice on Thursday (shoulder). He’s also been dealing with a chest/rib injury first suffered in a Week 3 win over the New York Jets. He left that game in the second quarter and has frequently been holding his chest after taking big hits or making big catches since.

But week after week, game after game, Edelman plays. And delivers.

“Julian’s a tough kid,” Belichick said. “He can work through quite a bit. So, he’s done a good job this year.”

Edelman leads the team in receptions, receiving yards and is tied for the lead in receiving touchdowns (along with Phillip Dorsett). He has played 89 percent of snaps or more in 11 of 12 games this year, including 100 percent of the snaps against Baltimore.

Julian Edelman shares uplifting Instagram post after Patriots’ loss to Texans

Even with an unsettling loss on Sunday night — the Patriots are still 10-2 and sit atop the AFC conference.

Even with an unsettling loss on Sunday night — the New England Patriots are still 10-2 and sit atop the AFC conference.

They’ve been is this position before, and similar to last year, people are starting to count them out. One big loss in a prime-time game turns into the end of a dynasty. Well, Tom Brady and this incredible defensive unit have four regular season games to turn things around and plan for the playoffs.

Mental toughness is something that resonates in New England, and Julian Edelman is the first to know this. Edelman shared an encouraging Instagram post on Monday night.

Twitter reacts to Patriots’ troubling loss to Texans

Twitter exploded after the Patriots lost 28-22 to the Texans on Sunday night.

The New England Patriots lost 28-22 in a huge conference matchup against the Houston Texans on Sunday night.

Aside from the final six minutes of the game, the Patriots offense looked like a shell of themselves. Tom Brady couldn’t connect with anyone that wasn’t named James White or Julian Edelman — and, he could barely connect with them in the first three quarters. The defense allowed four passing touchdowns and Houston clearly had the momentum the entire game.

The Baltimore Ravens now hold the top seed in the AFC, because both teams are 10-2 and Baltimore has the tiebreaker. This game left the Patriots looking vulnerable, and they have the Kansas City Chiefs next week.

Julian Edelman includes nine Patriots in his photoshopped Thanksgiving photo

Julian Edelman had a table full of Patriots in this Thanksgiving photo.

Two of the most active social media accounts for New England Patriots players are ran by Tom Brady and Julian Edelman.

Between the two, you can almost expect entertaining content after a Patriots win, or even on a holiday. Edelman came through on Thanksgiving with a photoshopped Twitter picture that included Brady, Robert Kraft, Bill Belichick, Sony Michel, Chase Winovich, Stephon Gilmore, Jason McCourty and Devin McCourty.

The 10-1 Patriots are preparing for a Week 13 matchup against the Houston Texans on Sunday night.

Julian Edelman hypes up N’Keal Harry in Instagram post

Julian Edelman is glad to have rookie wide receiver N’Keal Harry alongside him.

Julian Edelman is glad to have rookie wide receiver N’Keal Harry alongside him.

Harry is the first wide receiver drafted by Bill Belichick in the first round, and his NFL potential is sky-high with his 6-foot-4, 225 pound frame. Because of a lingering ankle injury, the New England Patriots didn’t get to see him on the field until Week 11 against the Philadelphia Eagles — where he recorded three catches for 18 yards.

He followed that performance up in Week 12 against the Dallas Cowboys when he recored his first NFL touchdown on a back-shoulder catch. The only other wide receivers active in that game were Julian Edelman, Jakobi Meyers and Matthew Slater.

Edelman was the only receiver with more than 20 career catches entering the game, and he was proud of the rookie for stepping up and scoring the only touchdown of the day. His Instagram post on Tuesday night reflected his respect for Harry.

You’re a wizard, Harry

A post shared by Julian Edelman (@edelman11) on

After the game on Sunday, Edelman talked about the performance from both rookies and couldn’t have been happier for them.

“It was great,” Edelman said. “Jakobi made some really good plays, really great plays. Which he does in practice. N’Keal made that same play in practice. It was good to see him go out and translate practice into the game and get some confidence.

“That’s not easy for a young group like that, with no one behind them, to go out and compete against a really good football team in a rainstorm and have them go out and make plays. It was awesome to have ’em make plays.”

Although Harry recorded his first touchdown, he wasn’t even close to satisfied with his performance.

“I’m definitely not satisfied,” Harry said. “And anybody that knows me knows that I’m about to turn it up a notch, and I’m about to really hit the grindstone and really get back to work.”

Harry is off to a solid start, and his next game likely won’t contain monsoon-like weather.

Patriots vs. Cowboys: Time, TV schedule and how to stream online

How to watch Patriots vs. Cowboys

The New England Patriots (9-1) will head back home to face the Dallas Cowboys (6-4) in Week 12.

New England has relied heavily on its defense this season and is heading into this game with more injuries on the offensive side of the ball. Phillip Dorsett and Mohamed Sanu are shaken up and Tom Brady has been dealing with a lingering elbow injury. The Patriots will return left tackle Isaiah Wynn against Dallas, and that’ll turn out to be a huge positive.

Dallas has had an up-and-down season, but they have an elite offensive trio with Dak Prescott, Ezekiel Elliot and Amari Cooper. This game will be a huge test for the Patriots — who will have to continue their defensive excellence. The Cowboys will come into Gillette Stadium with a must-win mentality and they’ll be a handful for the injury-riddled Patriots.

5 takeaways from Patriots’ 17-10 win over Eagles

Here are five takeaways from the Patriots’ hard-fought win over the Eagles.

The New England Patriots are 9-1 this season, but they still have a ton of room for improvement as the postseason creeps up.

New England defeated the Philadelphia Eagles on the road in a hard-fought 17-10 game. Tom Brady and the offense struggled mightily in the red zone and the defense had a tremendous bounce-back game. The only Patriots touchdown came from a double-pass trick play that was thrown by Julian Edelman. The rest of the points came from Nick Folk field goals — which was definitely a positive from this game.

Brady understands that this offense needs to crank it up a notch before the postseason begins and that the Patriots are currently playing through the most difficult stretch of the schedule. The next three games include the Dallas Cowboy, Houston Texans and Kansas City Chiefs. It’ll be a test for this defense and it’ll give the offense a playoff atmosphere to prepare for the postseason.

Here are five takeaways from the game.

Tom Brady has been trending in a negative direction

Either Brady’s age or the lack of protection has led to a steady decline in production for the 42 year old quarterback. With the combination of his 21 incompletions and inability to score in the red zone, Brady has relied heavily on the defense to bail him out.

Brady started off the first five games with ten touchdowns and one interception — he’s had four touchdowns and three interceptions in his last five games. The level of competition likely played a factor, and he’s also without key offensive linemen and his critical blocker with James Develin.

He was visibly frustrated in his press conference after the game and Brady is conscious of the fact that the offense isn’t clicking right now. It doesn’t help that the rushing attack has been non-existent so far this season and that the receiving corps continues to change. N’Keal Harry had a positive debut game for the Patriots and his presence along with Mohamed Sanu should play a huge role heading into the postseason.

Whether it’s Brady’s age or the lack of protection, Bill Belichick and Josh McDaniels have limited time to find a solution.

Bill Belichick has plenty of jokes after Julian Edelman TD pass

“Keeps his quarterback rating pretty high.” -Bill Belichick on Julian Edelman

Bill Belichick hopes Julian Edelman gets the proper treatment after Sunday’s win over the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 11.

The New England Patriots receiver cannot forget to ice his shoulder. Why? Because of his touchdown pass, of course. Though New England’s 17-10 win was hard fought defensive battle, Belichick took a playful tone when discussing Edelman’s touchdown pass in a postgame press conference at Lincoln Financial Field in Philly.

The coach recounted the Patriots’ touchdown-scoring trick play. On a third-and-11 from the 15-yard line, quarterback Tom Brady zipped the ball backward to Edelman in the flat. The former Kent State quarterback spotted and targeted receiver Phillip Dorsett open in the middle of end zone for a touchdown.

“Good read on the play,” Belichick said during a postgame press conference at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. “He checked the crosser and it was open. We had another option, but (Phillip Dorsett) was open. Edelman made a good decision.

“Keeps his quarterback rating pretty high, so I’m that he has to ice his shoulder down this week and massage it and everything else,” the Patriots coach smirked. “That was great. That was a great play by Julian.”

Indeed, Edelman boasts a perfect passer rating on his regular-season career.

Edelman has thrown a touchdown pass in the playoffs, with a throw to former Patriots receiver Danny Amendola in 2015. The 51-yard touchdown helped New England manage a comeback win. Edelman, of course, was a quarterback at Kent State before the Patriots converted him to punt returner and, eventually, to receiver. But that hasn’t stopped Belichick from using the former quarterback’s passing abilities.

After the Patriots’ win on Sunday night, Edelman riffed off his coach’s comments with a post on Twitter: “Time to ice the ole’ wing after that one.”

Patriots vs.Eagles: Time, TV schedule and how to stream online

How to watch Patriots vs Eagles

The New England Patriots (8-1) will come off their bye week to face the Philadelphia Eagles (5-4) in Week 11.

This is the first time that the Patriots will see the Eagles since losing to them in Super Bowl LII. New England is coming off of their first loss of the season to the Baltimore Ravens and they’re looking to redeem themselves. The defense has been incredible this season and the offense now has the additions of Mohamed Sanu and N’Keal Harry to work with.

The Eagles have had a disappointing season thus far, but they won their last two games while facing the Buffalo Bills and Chicago Bears. The Patriots’ defense has struggled against the run in the past two games and the Eagles are No. 11 in rushing yards per game. They will likely try to attack New England on the ground and also go to their lethal tight end set with Zack Ertz and Dallas Goedert.
