The Jacksonville Jaguars will take the field against the Los Angeles Chargers for the fourth time in five years this Sunday, and both teams will have a lot in common. Both teams will have coaches on the sidelines who are hot seat candidates, both will be looking for their second wins, and both will have similar defenses due to the Todd Wash-Gus Bradley connection.

On the field, both teams will also have young quarterbacks from the Pac-12 who are trying to build their resumes in Justin Herbert and Gardner Minshew II. When considering all of the aforementioned comparisons, Sunday’s matchup will be an interesting one despite both teams being far from playoff contenders.

Here is how those of you at home can watch, stream and listen to Week 7’s game which will mark the Jags’ first at SoFi Stadium:

Lions vs. Jaguars: 3 keys to a Jacksonville victory

With an extraordinary talent in James Robinson on their offense, the Jags must him accumulate 20+ carries if they want a Week 6 win.

The Jacksonville Jaguars will host the Detroit Lions this afternoon and are hoping to stop their four-game slide before the team’s bye week. The Jaguars haven’t won since their Week 1 victory against Indianapolis, but this game presents a good opportunity for the team to get back into the win column.

Detroit has faced their own fair share of struggles to start the year, with one win in their first four games. NFL Media members have ramped up the pressure on Matt Patricia as he continues to struggle in his first gig as a head coach. Oddshark have now placed him as the second most likely head coach to be fired next and a loss against an underperforming Jags team might be the final nail in the coffin.

So, how do the Jaguars win this game? Well, here are three things they must do if they want to come out on top Week 6:

Run the ball often and efficiently

In the Jaguars only win this year they only asked quarterback Gardner Minshew II to throw the ball 20 times. Compare this to his minimum 40 attempts in the following four games and it becomes quite easy to see where the Jaguars offense is going wrong.

Rookie running back James Robinson has emerged as a genuine franchise back and potential rookie of the year contender. Use him. This team has been built toward running the ball consistently and effectively ever since Doug Marrone took over in 2016. The fact that Robinson hasn’t broken 20 rushing attempts in a single game yet is staggering.

If the Jaguars can work the ball on the ground early, the likelihood is that Minshew won’t be asked to save the game for the team later on, which is where things usually start to go wrong for the enigmatic signal-caller.

Blitz on early downs

Defensive coordinator Todd Wash seems to have an aversion to sending pressure on early downs, but this Jaguars defense will be too easy to pick apart if they don’t start to mix up the blitz package.

Against good quarterbacks like Joe Burrow and Deshaun Watson, the Jaguars stayed relatively safe when it comes to dialing up pressure. That allowed the opposition far too much time to pick apart the Jags’ young and inexperienced secondary.

With linebacker Myles Jack returning from injury, Wash should be more creative in his blitz packages to try and disrupt Pro-Bowl quarterback Matthew Stafford. Otherwise, it’s going to be another long day for the Jacksonville defensive unit.

Win the turnover battle

Last week the Jaguars did well on this front, picking off Deshaun Watson twice. Unfortunately, their offense coughed up the ball twice, too, giving the Texans their first two turnovers of the season.

The Jaguars need to limit individual errors which cost the team points. If the offense can keep the ball out of the opposition’s hands and move the ball effectively, it would help the defense and overall team in a big way.

Creating turnovers hasn’t been a huge cause for concern this season, with five picks in their first five games. Obviously, those numbers can always improve, and if the team is able to put Stafford under pressure early then there is a real chance they could force some bad decisions from him.

Lions vs. Jaguars: Week 6 Jags Wire staff picks and predictions

Despite the Lions having just one win, there isn’t a lot of confidence in their opponents, the Jacksonville Jaguars, who also are struggling.

With no positive COVID-19 tests for the Jacksonville Jaguars (and league-wide), the Week 6 game against the Detroit Lions is a go. The game will be one between teams that should end up atop the draft order, though there is time to turn things around.

Both teams will come into the game with two wins combined, and a win could get some positive momentum going as we approach the mid-season mark. Here’s how the Jags Wire staff is feeling about what the outcome of the Battle of the Felines could be Sunday:

James Johnson (@Sportsgrind_Don): Lions 27, Jaguars 24

The Jags and Lions will enter this game with hot seat staffs desperate for wins. Matt Patricia’s time with the Lions has been worse than Doug Marrone’s tenure in Jacksonville (23-32 record) as he’ll enter Week 6’s game with a 10-25 record as their head coach.

As for the teams, both have suspect defenses, especially against the run. That said, the team that does that the best likely will win the game, however, Jay Gruden hasn’t shown that type of commitment to the run. That said, I could see the Jags dropping Gardner Minshew II back over 30 times, which actually might play into Patricia’s hand as the Lions are at least decent against the pass (No. 11).

Phil Smith (@PhiltheFilipino): Lions 31, Jaguars 24

Detroit is off to their own slow start after giving up a few leads early on this season. Matthew Stafford also appears to be somewhat off his game thus far. Well, as Jaguar fans we all know that the best way to remedy your quarterback’s struggles is to play against Todd Wash’s defense.

Following three straight losses, there doesn’t seem to be any reason to believe that the Jaguars can right this ship anytime soon. A solid portion of the fanbase would prefer they continue to lose, anyway. Well, they’ll get their wish as Matthew Stafford and T.J, Hockenson will carve this defense up. I expect solid performances from James Robinson and Laviska Shenault, but the Jags will still fall.

Daniel Griffis (@DanDGriffis): Lions 28, Jaguars 17

The Jaguars are in, well, a slump. The offense and defense are both struggling and some recent injuries have derailed an already thin roster. Hopefully, with the return of some key players this week against the Lions, the defense can slow down an ever-consistent Matthew Stafford. The Jaguars need to return to the run-game and take some stress off the right arm of Gardner Minshew if they hope to win this one. Start FAST!

Robert Ricks (@rrickswriting): Jaguars 33, Lions 28

The Jaguars need a bounce back after dropping four straight games. With the defense slowly but surely returning to health and cornerback Desmond Trufant for the Lions out, there will be a lot of passing yards from both quarterbacks. Jaguars come out on top in a must win matchup.

Will Frost (@willfrost_): Lions 34, Jaguars 21

Realistically, the loser of this game should probably leave their head coach on the tarmac. Both teams have been overwhelmingly disappointing so far this season, which makes it a winnable game for both sides.

Linebacker Myles Jack and cornerback CJ Henderson being back should help the Jaguars’ defense improve from last week, but Matthew Stafford is far too good of a quarterback to struggle against their lackluster pass-rush. If he’s given time (as most opposing quarterbacks have been so far this year), it could get ugly fast.

Jacob DeLawrence (@_Jdela): Lions 34, Jaguars 31

The Jags return home and look to finally put an end to their four game losing streak as they host the 1-3 Lions. Both teams have underperformed and are facing scrutiny from their fanbases. Adrian Peterson has found a home in Detroit and somehow managed to keep Father Time at bay. While he is expected to see limited duty, that just opens things up for D’Andre Swift and Kerryon Johnson to have solid days on the ground against a team that has struggled. Somehow this game turns into a shootout due to poor defense on both sides and Stafford proves he still has enough left in his tank and wins a close one.

Gimme him: 1 player for the Jags to steal from the Lions

The Jacksonville Jaguars will be taking on the Detroit Lions Sunday at TIAA Bank Field in their first home game since Week 3.

With that comes an opportunity we occasionally take to evaluate the opposition and hypothetically snag a player from their roster. Despite the Lions also having just one win to their record, there is some talent the Jags could use from their Week 6 foes as they also are struggling this season.

So, who would that player be you ask? Well, when considering the issues the Jags have endured at tight end I went with the Lions’ leading receiver, T.J. Hockenson.

In just his second season, Hockenson has become a solid pass-catcher for quarterback Matthew Stafford, registering 15 receptions for 180 yards and two touchdowns. He also has a respectable Pro Football Focus grade of 73.4 at the moment, which is similar to that of Jags WR1 DJ Chark Jr (76.5).

Hockenson is a player many Jags fans may remember from last year’s draft. He was frequently slotted to the Jags in the first round of mock drafts because he was a good fit for the team, who need a No. 1 tight end. With Josh Allen miraculously falling to them at the No. 7 spot, they passed on Hockenson, but he went to the Lions who had the following pick.

Jags fans should be mindful of the second-year player come Sunday because he could be up for a big game. The defense has struggled against tight ends with the most notable being Jonnu Smith (Week 2) and Darren Fells this past Sunday. Smith had over 80 yards against them for two touchdowns while Fells had a 40-plus yard touchdown against them. That said, if Hockenson registers a similar day, there could be some fans who make an argument that he would’ve been a better 2019 pick. However, the value on Allen was simply hard to pass on though Hockenson is making the comparison a little more interesting.

Will the Jags-Texans Week 5 game be on TV in your area?

Several cities in the south will be able to catch Sunday’s AFC South rivalry between the Jags and Houston on CBS at 1 pm.

The Jacksonville Jaguars will get a crack at yet another winless team in the Houston Texans Week 5, and a win would put them at a game under .500. It would also give the Jags their second win in the AFC South, which could be huge for their momentum heading forward.

The Texans, on the other hand, will be just a few days removed from the firing of their coach Bill O’Brien. Many feel that the decision is a positive one that will allow the team to play more freely, and if that’s the case, fans could be in for a good old shootout when looking at both team’s defenses.

As they typically are on Sundays, the Jags will be one of the teams slotted in the 1:00 pm EST window on Sunday (Oct. 11). Per 506 Sports, those who live in the green shaded areas will be able to see the game.

Similarly to Week 2 against the Tennessee Titans, Andrew Catalon will serve as the play-by-play analyst while James Lofton will serve as the color commentator for Sunday’s showdown in Houston.

The Texans will enter Sunday as the leader of the all-time series with a 23-13 record over the Jaguars. They’ve also won four of the last five meetings between the two with the last win for Jacksonville occurring Week 1 of the 2017 season.

For Jags coach Doug Marrone, Sunday’s game will be a huge one as he’s currently going through a season where it feels like his job is on the line. Not only would it end a three-game skid, but it would also put the Jags at 2-1 in their division with a winnable game coming up against the Detroit Lions.

Jags finally add CB Sidney Jones to practice squad alongside DT Daniel Ekuale

The Jags’ 2020 practice squad is finally filled.

The Jacksonville Jaguars filled out their practice squad Tuesday by making several transactions. The most notable was one many had been anticipating, which was the signing of former Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Sidney Jones.

The Jags also added former Cleveland Browns defensive tackle, Daniel Ekuale, to their practice squad after an extra spot was available due to quarterback Mike Glennon being promoted to the active roster.

Jones, 24, was one of the more notable names who was cut during the league’s process of forming their final 53-man rosters. As a second-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, the Eagles had high hopes for but him things didn’t pan out mostly due to injuries. He’s only played in 22 regular season games out of 48, although he was simply inactive for some.

Now, with a change of scenery, Jones will look to blossom in Jacksonville who need experience at cornerback. They currently have four rookie corners on the roster, including first-round pick C.J. Henderson, fourth-round pick Josiah Scott, seventh-round pick Chris Claybrooks, and undrafted free-agent Luq Barcoo. That said, don’t be shocked to see Jones on the active roster sooner rather than later.

Ekuale, 26, was on the Browns’ practice squad for most of his rookie season. However, in 2019 he made their final-53 man roster but had to be placed on injured reserve in early November with a calf injury. He ultimately finished the season with four tackles and one of them was registered as a tackle for loss.

Gardner Minshew on Jags’ doubters: ‘I think it should put a chip on everybody’s shoulder’

The Jacksonville Jaguars aren’t projected to do all that great this season by the national media due to losing a lot of veterans this offseason. The good people over at BetMGM aren’t too high on them either as the team is projected to win only five games.

Of course, the players on the Jags’ roster aren’t trying to hear the negativity. As the quarterback of the team, Gardner Minshew II especially is ready to prove the doubters wrong and believes his comrades will be motivated by those who believe the Jags won’t make any progress.

“I think it should put a chip on everybody’s shoulder on our team, know being kind of counted out like that,” said Minshew Thursday. “I think we do have a lot to prove, prove that we are not what anybody says about us, the only people that really know, the only peoples whose opinions matter is who is in that huddle, who is on that team and I think we are going to set those expectations for ourselves and not worry about what anybody else has to say about us.”

In addition to the veterans they’ve lost, one could certainly understand why the Jags are being doubted as they’ve only had one winning season out of Dave Caldwell’s seven-year tenure. Additionally, they could be without pass-rusher Yannick Ngakoue, who is currently not seeing eye-to-eye with the front office.

Another concern that has been brought up by fans is the shortage of additions made offensively around Minshew. While the team did get tight end Tyler Eifert and drafted receivers Laviska Shenault Jr. and Collin Johnson, some are concerned about the Jags not adding a new starter on the offensive line. Sure, fourth-round pick Ben Bartch could be the No. 1 right guard but the team views him more as a project for now.

Regardless, Minshew seems very confident in the pieces around him. The reason for that is because the unit seems to be buying into new offensive coordinator Jay Gruden, who has a respectable track record with quarterbacks and young offenses. That said, if Gruden can tap into the Jags’ offensive potential, they could be well on the way to making a lot of people national pundits eat their words.

Podcast: Discussions on Jags signings of Mike Glennon, Aaron Lynch, top-3 games on schedule

James Johnson and Phil Smith go into details about the top-3 games on the Jags schedule and what the Jags’ latest veteran additions mean.

With the Jacksonville Jaguars schedule now official, fans of the team are pretty excited to see the product on the field despite national pundits having doubts about the team. To discuss the top-3 games we’ll be eying and the floor and ceiling for their record, Jags Wire contributor Phil Smith and I hit the booth for episode 16 of the “Bleav in the Jags” podcast.

Before getting into our thoughts on the schedule, we also discussed the Jags’ additions of edge rusher Aaron Lynch and quarterback Mike Glennon, both of whom should provide a a veteran presence at two key positions in training camp.

As fans of the team know by now, the Jacksonville Jaguars are one of the least-represented NFL teams when it comes to getting primetime games. Customary Thursday Night Football game against the Tennessee Titans aside, the Jaguars very rarely find themselves kicking off at 8 p.m. In fact, Jacksonville has only had three primetime fixtures in the last three seasons, with no late kickoffs in their 2017 10-win season.

Now, the Jaguars have announced that they are playing all eight home games on home soil this year and are scheduled to play multiple storied franchises. Simply put, the window of opportunity is wider than it has been in previous seasons.

The NFL is set to release the 2020 schedule on Thursday night and here are some possible match-ups to look out for in those primetime slots:

Reinhold Matay-USA TODAY Sports

Away vs. Green Bay Packers

Fans should expect all the primetime games possible in Green Bay. With the Packers selecting Jordan Love in the 2020 NFL Draft, television coverage will be smothering Lambeau Field this season. Thankfully for the Jags, the Packers don’t host many illustrious teams next season.

Whilst there’s no indication that this will be the last year in green and yellow for Aaron Rodgers, if the Jaguars bookend the Packers’ schedule on either side, chances are they could be playing a primetime game.

Green Bay routinely receives the maximum allocation of late games, and with the team coming off the success of a 13-3 campaign, the Jags could fall favor to storylines out of their control.

With the NFL planning to release their 2020 schedules soon, here are the Jags’ opponents

The Jacksonville Jaguars’ schedule will be released soon, but in the meantime, here are some key things to know about their opponents.

According to NFL executive vice president Jeff Pash, the NFL is planning to start on schedule despite the COVID-19 pandemic that has occurred worldwide. That being said, it also appears the league is planning to release it’s regular and preseason schedules this week, which for the Jags, could include a full home schedule at TIAA Bank Field for the first time since 2012.

Of course, the schedule will include its typical two games against their three divisional opponents from the AFC South. It also will include games against the whole AFC and NFC North divisions as well as a game against the fourth-place teams from the AFC East and the AFC West as a result of being 2019’s fourth-place team for their own division.

Here’s a full list of the Jags’ 2020 opponents:

Home

Cleveland Browns (AFC North)
Pittsburgh Steelers (AFC North)
Chicago Bears (NFC North)
Detroit Lions (NFC North)
Miami Dolphins (AFC East)
Tennessee Titans (AFC South)
Houston Texans (AFC South)
Indianapolis Colts (AFC South)

Away

Baltimore Ravens (AFC North)
Cincinnati Bengals (AFC North)
Green Bay Packers (NFC North)
Minnesota Vikings (NFC North)
Los Angeles Chargers (AFC West)
Tennessee Titans (AFC South)
Houston Texans (AFC South)
Indianapolis Colts (AFC South)

Noteworthy tidbits

  • The Jags were 2-4 in their division last year. Their two wins came against the Titans Week 4 and Indy in the season finale.
  • The Jags will play five 2019 postseason opponents next year in the Texans, Titans, Ravens, Packers, and Vikings.
  • The Jaguars’ strength of schedule ranks No. 22 with their opponents totaling a 126-129-1 (.494) record last season.
  • The Jags could be playing former quarterback Nick Foles in 2020, who they traded to the Bears this offseason.
  • After their struggles against him for many years, the Jags will have to deal with Philip Rivers twice (if healthy) as he now is with the Colts.
