Texas vs Iowa State Game Preview

Why Texas Will Win

If ever a program desperately needed an inspirational performance, this is it.

Texas was on its way to the Big 12 Championship, the College Football Playoff, and maybe even bigger things after the first quarter in Dallas against Oklahoma.

The team was ripping off yards in chunks, the Steve Sarkisian offense was on fire, and then …

Three straight losses later, and 4-4 Texas is just trying to get to a tasteful bowl game.

The O still has enough talent to hang with just about anyone, Iowa State’s great D is coming off an awful performance in a loss to West Virginia, and now it’s time to start bombing away.

The Cyclone defense has been among the best in the Big 12, but it’s been spotty over the last few weeks in the secondary. It was hardly a big issue, and then Mountaineer QB Jarret Doege threw for 370 yards.

Texas has to find that passing game groove again, because …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Iowa State Will Win

Yeah, the Texas offense has a slew of wonderful parts, but it’s like an ensemble cast movie full of high-end actors that don’t quite mesh.

The passing attack has been brutally inconsistent, the rushing attack hasn’t hit 200 yards since the first week of October, and it’s all struggling just as the run defense has gone bye-bye.

It hasn’t been a total disaster, but it can’t seem to come up with any meaningful stops lately. It’s allowed 220 rushing yards or more in each of the last three games, and the team is now 0-4 when allowing at least that many. It’s 4-0 when it doesn’t.

Breece Hall and company were stuffed by Oklahoma State two weeks ago, and followed it up with 239 yards on the ground against West Virginia. The Cyclones have hit the 200-yard mark in four of the last five games, and …

What’s Going To Happen

They’re about to do it here, too.

No, really, what’s the problem with Texas? It’s not that hard …

Arkansas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Baylor. Texas can’t beat the good teams, it got past the four mediocre ones on the slate, and now it has to deal with another good team.

Worst of all for the Longhorns, it’s getting an outstanding Iowa State defense coming off a miserable performance against West Virginia.

It’s going to come out roaring, the Cyclone ground game will be great, and hopes of getting back to the Big 12 Championship will be back on after going off the tracks last week.

Iowa State vs West Virginia Game Preview

Why Iowa State Will Win

Well there we go. That’s the Iowa State we all thought would be rolling into 2021.

The running game didn’t work against the great Oklahoma State defense, it was a close fight that came down to a questionable late call, but a win is a win is a win, and now the Cyclones still have the Big 12 Championship appearance there for the taking by winning out.

Outside of last week, the offense has been almost perfectly balanced, and the defense has been phenomenal – it’s No. 3 in the nation in total D and first in the Big 12 in scoring defense – going against a one-sided West Virginia offense.

The Mountaineer running game went off on TCU last week, but that’s not the norm. The team is failed to get to 100 yards in all four losses, and it ran for 180 yards or more in the three wins.

No one has rushed for 180 yards on Iowa State so far.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why West Virginia Will Win

It’s a different team at home.

The Mountaineers were able to keep their season alive with a win over TCU in Fort Worth, and there was a 23-20 loss to Morgantown a few weeks ago, but three of the last four games have been on the road. This is just the team’s second home game since the middle of September.

The defense has been a bit consistently solid, even when the offensive side wasn’t great. Baylor went off, and the pass defense will give up yards, but the run defense has yet to allow more than 175 yards and the D as a whole only gave up over 400 once since the opener against Maryland.

The defense is fantastic at getting into the backfield, it’s strong at not breaking all that often after bending, and it should be able to keep this close throughout.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

The Iowa State defense will take over in a somewhat surprising slugfest of a game.

West Virginia will take its game up a few notches at home, but it’ll come down to just a few mistakes. Iowa State is the best in the Big 12 at limiting penalties, and it’s among the best in the country in fewest giveaways.

West Virginia doesn’t take the ball away and will lose the turnover battle. That will be enough.

Oklahoma State vs Iowa State Game Preview

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

Yeah, Iowa State appears to be getting back to the team that we all thought we were getting when the season started, but let’s relax on this just a wee bit.

It’s not time to start holding parades for beating Kansas and Kansas State.

Oklahoma State is battle-hardened at the one team to beat Baylor – the Bears got by Iowa State a few weeks ago – and pulled off a terrific win over Texas helped by the continued rise of Jaylen Warren.

Everyone might be fawning over Bijan Robinson of Texas, and Breece Hall is the star back in this, but Warren is the hottest back in the Big 12 with four straight 100-yard games with a 193-yard performance against the Longhorns.

He’s been great, the defense has been fantastic, and the Cowboys have the makeup and the style to be exactly what’s needed to match what Iowa State does because …

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Iowa State Will Win

The Iowa State defense showed up from the start.

The offense was the problem early on, but that rebounded fast with four straight games of well over 400 yards. That side is humming – the balance is there with 200 yards passing and rushing in the last three games – but it’s the other side that’s dominating.

It allowed over 300 yards in each of the last two games, but it’s not getting gouged, it’s the best in the conference against the run, fifth in pass defense, and overall the D is third in the nation.

Oklahoma State has to be ready to get into a slugfest, and …

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Oklahoma State’s defensive front is going to take over.

The Iowa State offense is playing better overall now than the Cowboy attack, but the fantastic OSU pass rush, the ability to come up with stops on third downs, and yeah, overall, the attitude of still not being respected enough will come through.

It’ll be a tight game coming down to the last few possessions. Brock Purdy will have one last shot to pull it off, but the Cowboys will get the stop.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Iowa State vs Kansas State Game Preview

Why Iowa State Will Win

After losses to Iowa and Baylor, the world might have blown off lumped in Iowa State with the other 2020 anomalies, but this is still a terrific team full of veterans, talent, and now, no pressure compared to about a month ago.

Completely forgotten is how the team is still very, very much in the Big 12 title chase.

Blowing away Kansas is hardly a signal of anything – granted, there still isn’t a decent win yet in 2020 – the Cyclones have had two weeks off, they still get  Texas and Oklahoma in Ames, and they get a shot at Oklahoma in late November.

In other words, blow off everything that happened in the first half of the year and prepare for the pivot.

The Kansas State offense has gone dead-silent on the ground over the last three games, the pass defense has been lit up, and there isn’t enough of a passing game to help the cause if the Cyclone D continues to be fantastic.

However …

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Kansas State Will Win

Kansas State has the defensive front to give the Iowa State offense a bad day.

The secondary might be giving up plenty of yards, but it’s not facing the most efficient of passing games. The Cyclone offensive line has been fine, but the attack isn’t converting on third downs and – again – it hasn’t been able to come through in the two big games that mattered.

The idea will be to make Brock Purdy win this. He was fantastic in last year’s blowout win, but he struggled in Manhattan in 2019 with a season-low 185 yards.

He’s been wildly inconsistent so far, and if he isn’t on, there’s going to be a problem getting the offense moving against a K-State run D that leads the Big 12, allowing 86 yards per game helped by the big plays behind the line.

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

This is a strong Kansas State team that beat Stanford and Nevada and balled out in losses to undefeated Oklahoma and Oklahoma State teams, but this game is about Iowa State.

Can the Cyclones really wake up in time to get into the conference title hunt? did the time off and the light scrimmage against the Jayhawks be enough to get this whole thing going?

This week, yes.

The Iowa State offense is still going to be spotty, but the defense will make up for it by stuffing the Kansas State rushing attack and allowing fewer than 300 yards of total offense.

It’s not going to be anything pretty, but it’ll be a strong road win over a good team. This year, it’s a step for the Cyclones.
