Missouri vs Iowa State Game Preview

Why Missouri Will Win

Iowa State fits for Mizzou – there isn’t enough size to matter.

The Cyclones are okay on the inside, but they’re not great on the boards, the don’t get nearly enough defensive rebounds, and they’re about to have problems against a Tiger defense that comes up with a whole lot of blocks.

The guard oriented offense that’s struggling with its consistency from the outside. The attack might have been enough to get by Oklahoma State in a fun overtime battle, but the Texas Tech and TCU defenses shut things down from the outside.

Missouri doesn’t shoot the lights out, but it should be able to generate a whole slew of offensive rebounds and second chances.

NFL Mock Draft: First 1st round mock

Why Iowa State Will Win

Missouri is having even more problems than Iowa State.

It battled hard with No. 1 Auburn in a 55-54 loss, but that was the sixth defeat in the last eight games. The offense doesn’t do nearly enough from three – it came up with double-digit threes just once this season – and the D doesn’t force enough mistakes to generate easy points.

Iowa State’s defense should be able to clamp down with enough takeaways to get on the move. Missouri isn’t built to make big comebacks or keep up in any sort of a shootout.

The Tigers are 1-7 when allowing more than 75 points. Iowa State is 9-0 when getting to 75 or more, but …

What’s Going To Happen

This isn’t going to be a whole lot of fun offensively. Iowa State doesn’t score enough, Missouri can’t seem to catch any sort of a break and can’t do enough from the outside.

It should make for a game with a few power outages. It’ll come down to mistakes, and Iowa State will force more of them.

Iowa State vs Oklahoma State Game Preview

Why Iowa State Will Win

So how does Iowa State pull up from its nosedive?

The threes have to start falling.

They’re not getting a lick of luck lately from the outside, they’re not getting to the free throw line, and they’re struggling to come up with enough easy points off of turnovers to make up for the problems on the outside.

Oklahoma State doesn’t make its free throws on a consistent enough basis, it’s the worst team in the Big 12 from three, and it’s awful on the free throw line.

However …

NFL Mock Draft: First 1st round mock

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

Oklahoma State’s defense makes up for the offense.

It generates a whole lot of mistakes and makes plays on the move, the D generates a ton of blocks, and the aggressive style comes through on the offensive boards with enough second chance points to matter.

How bad has Iowa State been from the outside? Against the solid Texas Tech and TCU defenses it hit 8-of-52 from three and is way too inconsistent overall.

The Oklahoma State pressure should be enough to keep that going. Big 12 opponents are hitting way under 40% from three.

AP college basketball top 25

What’s Going To Happen

Iowa State just isn’t showing well enough, and Oklahoma State isn’t the team to go against if you’re struggling from the field.

The Cowboys might not be winning a ton, but the D has been good through the rough 4-7 run.

There won’t be anything pretty about this game, but it’ll be a tight throughout and close late. Oklahoma State will get the late defensive stop to survive.

Clemson vs Iowa State Cheez-It Bowl Preview

If you were to tell Clemson and Iowa State before the season that they’d be playing each other in a bowl game in Florida, they’d have rightly assumed it would’ve been the Orange Bowl in a College Football Playoff semifinal.

Iowa State came into the year loaded with experience and talent coming off a breakthrough 2020 season, and Clemson came into the year as … Clemson.

It should say something about what Dabo Swinney has created that a 9-3 season is considered a massive disappointment. This game isn’t just about closing with a strong victory to get to ten wins. It’s about what might be happening going forward for a program that’s used to any season-ending losses coming in the playoff.

Former Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables is the new Oklahoma head coach, and a few players are leaving for the transfer portal, but the nation’s second-best scoring D – the pass rush is still great and the run defense is a rock – is still going to be amazing.

Iowa State was shaky down the stretch, but the passing game finished as the best in the Big 12, the running game is strong, and it plays a little defense, too, finishing tenth in the nation overall and second in the Big 12.

TCU vs Iowa State Game Preview

Why TCU Will Win

There’s still a way to salvage the season.

This wasn’t where the program was supposed to be on the final Friday of the campaign. It might not have been a Big 12 Championship year, but this was going to be a big showdown against Iowa State with a chance at a good bowl, but …

Head coach Gary Patterson is gone, and despite that, the team has won two of its last three games to stay in the mix for a bowl game with a win.

The offense threw for 468 yards in the win over Baylor, ran for over 300 in the win over Kansas, and it’s been just feisty enough to step in and shock an Iowa State team that came into the year thinking more than just the Big 12 Championship.

What’s Iowa State’s problem? Not enough down field passing, the O is having a hard time moving the chains, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Iowa State Will Win

The team just flat out lost its mojo … on the road.

In Ames, Iowa State was able to hand Oklahoma State its only loss, it embarrassed Texas – but who doesn’t? – and now it’s finally back after going away for three of its last four games.

Even with Breece Hall being okay, the running game hasn’t been any good over the last several weeks. However, Brock Purdy and the passing attack have been strong, the TCU pass defense can be bombed on, and worst of all, there are just no third down stops from these Horned Frogs.

The balanced attack should come out for the Cyclones.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

What’s Going To Happen

TCU will play with a whole other level of intensity with the season on the line.

However, Iowa State will play with a whole other level of intensity with the the last month a collapse. Losing to Texas Tech and Oklahoma might have been embarrassing, but the slide stops here.

The veteran Cyclones will close with a bang. TCU will be great for a half, but it’ll be all Iowa State in the second half.

Week 12 Big Game Reactions
Oklahoma 28, Iowa State 21

Ohio State 56, Michigan State 7 Reaction

Well that went well.

If it’s possible to pitch a perfect first half, Ohio State did it.

CJ Stroud is now the leader in the Heisman race, the NFL receiving corps played like its should leave right now and step on a field on Sunday, and even the defense was able to dominate.

There was no big day from Michigan State RB Kenneth Walker – six carries for 25 yards.

There was no picking apart of the Ohio State secondary – it allowed 158 yards and a late score.

It was as good a day as the Buckeyes could’ve asked for going into the Michigan game, and it all started with an offensive line that gave Stroud 19 days to throw.

He wasn’t bad early on, but now he looks comfortable, his decision-making is faster, and it sure helps when you have those guys running free and easy.

And it doesn’t hurt to play the nation’s worst pass defense.

It doesn’t matter if you’re throwing against air – 32-of-35 for 432 yards and six touchdowns with no picks is pretty good.

It was the perfect performance that should push the Buckeyes up in the College Football Playoff rankings, even though that doesn’t matter too much. Beat Michigan, win the Big Ten Championship, and get in.

It’s not going to be nearly as easy as it looked against the beleaguered Spartan D, but it’s there. The offense looked like it’s ready to not just get back to the mini-tournament, but do some damage.

Oklahoma vs Iowa State Game Preview

Why Oklahoma Will Win

Oklahoma is still good at college football.

For all of the talk about not playing anyone who was any good before going to Baylor, everything is still on the table.

Beat Iowa State, beat Oklahoma State, beat – most likely – Oklahoma State again in the Big 12 Championship, be 12-1 as a Power Five champion, get into the College Football Playoff … maybe.

Taking down the Cyclones on the road would be a strong first step into respectability, and it starts by getting the running game going again.

Baylor bottled up Caleb Williams, the line didn’t generate a push, and it’s been two games in a row without hitting 100 yards on the ground.

The O rolled for 525 yards or more in three of the four games before last week. Now it gets a Cyclone defense that got rocked by Texas Tech for over 500 yards, allowed close to 500 yards against West Virginia, and suddenly it looked beatable.

Iowa State is 0-2 when giving up 300 passing yards, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Iowa State Will Win

Iowa State might have bowed out of the Big 12 title race with last week’s loss to Texas Tech, but it should be able to do a whole lot of the same things Baylor was able to do to Oklahoma last week.

Breece Hall and the Cyclone running game stalled in the loss to the Red Raiders, but he’s still a Doak Walker Award-level back, the ground attack is still great, and OU just gave up almost 300 yards to the Baylor running game.

Yeah, the defense has had problems stopping teams from throwing over the second half of the season, but the run D remains a rock and the pass defense is the second-best in the Big 12.

This is a veteran team that’s not going to beat itself on the road. It doesn’t have turnover problems, the lines are terrific, and there aren’t a slew of penalties.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

Caleb Williams and the passing game will bounce back fast.

Williams might be a bit banged up, but he’s still the playmaker who hit over 75% of his passes over the three games as a starter before Baylor, he ripped Texas Tech off over 400 yards and six touchdowns in a near-perfect game, and he’s going to get some help.

It’s the home finale before going up the road a few miles to deal with Oklahoma State. The Sooners are going to do what they do – they’ll be too sleepy for about 20 minutes – but the lines are about to come up with a big day and the run defense will show up after last week’s embarrassment.

Iowa State vs Texas Tech Game Preview

Why Iowa State Will Win

Shhhhh, but Iowa State is playing well and is still knee deep in the mix for a Big 12 title appearance.

The loss at West Virginia was a problem, but it came back roaring with a dominant 30-7 win over Texas. The passing attack is playing well, Breece Hall continues to be Breece Hall, and there shouldn’t be any problems moving the ball on the Red Raiders.

Texas Tech statistically has been fine against the run, but that’s mostly because most teams are throwing at will. The secondary got lit up by Oklahoma’s Caleb Williams as part of a run of 296 or more passing yards allowed in four of the last six games.

Iowa State’s offense will have some fun, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Texas Tech Will Win

As good as the Cyclone offense is, it stalls just a bit too much.

It’s not that great on third downs, the special teams have had their issues over the season, and the defense isn’t always sharp against quarterbacks in a groove.

After dominating over the first part of the season, the Iowa State secondary allowed over 300 yards in three straight games before shutting down Texas to a dead stop.

Texas Tech might be in transition to the Joey McGuire era for 2022, but it’s still Sonny Cumbie’s team for the moment. There will be lots and lots of passing.

What’s Going To Happen

Do the Red Raiders have something in freshman QB Donovan Smith?

He stepped in against Oklahoma two weeks ago and hit 17-of-22 passes for 192 yards and a touchdown with a pick, ran a little bit, and he looked like a guy the new regime might want to think about building around.

Henry Colombi is still in the mix, and Tyler Shough should be back soon from his collarbone injury, but none of those guys play D.

Iowa State’s offense will be too balanced and too consistent. The time off for the Red Raiders will help a bit, but the Cyclone experience will come through in a must-have game before dealing with Oklahoma.
