The Xs and Os with Greg Cosell: Previewing Week 18’s biggest NFL matchups

In this week’s “Xs and Os with Greg Cosell and Doug Farrar,” the guys preview the final week of the regular season with tape and metrics.

It’s time for Week 18 of the 2023 NFL campaign — the final week of the regular season — and Greg Cosell of NFL Films and ESPN’s NFL Matchup, and Doug Farrar of Touchdown Wire and the USA Today Sports Media Group, are here to get you ready for the most important games, playoff scenarios, and interesting matchups:

Kansas City Chiefs-Los Angeles Chargers — Why the Chiefs wouldn’t even be a playoff team without Steve Spagnuolo, and how Kansas City’s defense got four sacks in five plays against the Bengals on Cincinnati’s final drive.

Philadelphia Eagles-New York Giants — The Eagles had best fix their leaky run defense before the playoffs, and the Giants could be a stern test in that regard.

Houston Texans- Indianapolis Colts — C.J. Stroud is back for the Texans, and he’ll face a Colts defense with a lot of underrated players. The winner takes the AFC South.

Los Angeles Rams-San Francisco 49ers — The 49ers have wrapped up the NFC’s one-seed, so they won’t play many of their starters, but it’s time to recognize a Rams defense defined by two rookies, and more underrated players.

Buffalo Bills-Miami Dolphins — Two up-and-down teams are fighting for control of the AFC East, and it could come down to which unit figures itself out: Buffalo’s offense, or Miami’s defense.

Chicago Bears-Green Bay Packers — The Bears won’t make the playoffs, but they have a fascinating decision to make about Justin Fields’ future. Meanwhile, Packers quarterback Jordan Love has been as good as anyone at his position in the second half of the season.

Giants’ Gunner Olszewski returns punt 94 yards for spectacular touchdown

Gunner Olszewski set a Giants team record with a 94-yard punt return for a TD

The Los Angeles Rams had Gunner Olszewski in their grasp … and then he was gone for a 94-yard punt return.

The play brought Big Blue within 26-25. On the PAT, the Rams were offsides. That caused Brian Daboll to audible and go for a two-point conversion.

Saquon Barkley was wide open but Tyrod Taylor missed him and the Giants still trailed 26-25.

The Xs and Os with Greg Cosell: Previewing Week 17’s biggest NFL matchups

In this week’s “Xs and Os with Greg Cosell and Doug Farrar,” the guys get into Week 17’s biggest NFL matchups with tape and advanced metrics.

It’s time for Week 17 of the 2023 NFL season, and Greg Cosell of NFL Films and ESPN’s NFL Matchup, and Doug Farrar of Touchdown Wire and the USA Today Sports Media Group, are here to get you ready for the most important games and interesting matchups:

Cleveland Browns-New York Jets: Joe Flacco is killing defenses with shot plays out of play-action, and as good as the Jets’ defense has been all season long, that’s a vulnerability on their side.

Detroit Lions-Dallas Cowboys: The Cowboys have played more man defense than any other team this season, but all 10 of Jared Goff’s interceptions this season have come against zone coverage. Dallas played more zone against the Miami Dolphins last week; that trend might continue.

Los Angeles Rams-New York Giants: It’s time to check in on Matthew Stafford and what he’s dialing up in Sean McVay’s shape-shifting offense.

Miami Dolphins-Baltimore Ravens: The Ravens just came off a great game in which they beat the San Francisco 49ers on both sides of the ball, and Mike McDaniel’s Dolphins present similar challenges.

Cincinnati Bengals-Kansas City Chiefs: The Chiefs’ offense is circling the drain, and it’s everybody’s fault. Can they turn it around in time for the playoffs?

Giants’ Adoree’ Jackson with 76-yard pick-six of Jalen Hurts

Adoree’ Jackson and the Giants are giving the Eagles a tussle

The New York Giants have closed in on the Philadelphia Eagles at the Linc.

Big Blue scored touchdowns early and late in the third quarter Monday to turn a 20-3 deficit into a two-point game.

The second score came when Adoree’ Jackson picked off Jalen Hurts and returned it 76 yards for a touchdown.

Brian Daboll opted to go for a 2-point conversion after the big play and Saquon Barkley was successful with a running play. that made it 20-18.

Tommy DeVito lands business deal with legendary Rao’s

Tommy DeVito is becoming big business by the day

Tommy DeVito’s new business agent is swinging for the fences with the New York Giants quarterback as his client and landing big partnerss.

On Friday, it was announced DeVito has a deal with the iconic Rao’s.

Rao’s is a famed restaurant in New York and has a line of fabulous sauces.

This one is a cutlet above for the Giants rookie.

Giants punter Jamie Gillan nails 40-yard field goal

Jamie Gillan can punt and kick but can the Giant also pass?

A New York Giants highlight that doesn’t involve Tommy DeVito.

Randy Bullock went out with a hamstring injury so that left the punting and kicking duties to Jamie Gillan.

The punter accepted his new role and stepped right into it and the football against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday.

Gillan connected from 40 yards but the Giants still trailed at the Superdome.

America is all about Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito, his agent, and his family

Tommy DeVito, his family, and his agent are owning the internet as the New York Giants take on the Green Bay Packers.

The last time there were this many Italian-American memes on the internet… well, you might have to go back to the Sopranos finale. But it’s clear that the agent (Sean Stellato) and family of New York Giants quarterback Tommy DeVito have captured America’s imagination. Before the Giants’ Monday night game with the Green Bay Packers, DeVito’s family offered tailgate feast, and Sean Stellato came to the game dressed as if he was connected.

You have to appreciate the dedication to the bit in Stellato’s case, and things got even better in the DeVito family box at MetLife Stadium. Social media was all over it.

The Xs and Os with Greg Cosell: Previewing Week 14’s biggest NFL matchups

In this week’s “Xs and Os with Greg Cosell and Doug Farrar,” the guys preview Week 14’s most important NFL matchups.

It’s time for Week 14 of the 2023 NFL season, and Greg Cosell of NFL Films and ESPN’s NFL Matchup, and Doug Farrar of Touchdown Wire and the USA Today Sports Media Group, are here to get you ready for the most important games and interesting matchups:

Los Angeles Rams-Baltimore Ravens — The intricacies of Matthew Stafford’s 70-yard touchdown pass to Puka Nacua against the Cleveland Browns, and how the Ravens’ defense might give Stafford some intellectual headaches.

Seattle Seahawks-San Francisco 49ers — Can the Seahawks face up against a dominant 49ers team that took them completely out of their depth on Thanksgiving night? The battle between 49ers cornerback Charvarius Ward and Seahawks receiver D.K. Metcalf will be key.

Philadelphia Eagles-Dallas Cowboys — The Eagles are trying to recover from the 49ers demolishing them (it’s happening a lot to San Francisco’s opponents these days), and it’s time for Jalen Hurts to stop doing one thing that’s hurting his offense.

Green Bay Packers-New York Giants — Jordan Love is coming into his own as a franchise quarterback, and his ability to succeed against the blitz is a big part of that. How will Love fare against a Giants defense that blitzes a ton, and covers very well behind it?

The NFL’s Worst of the Week: Diontae Johnson, shotgun runs, bad Jets/Pats, Shawn Hochuli

This week’s Worst of the Week in the NFL included Diontae Johnson, Jared Goff, the Jets and Patriots, and of course, more horrible officiating!

Football is a wonderful, thrilling, inspiring game that can lift us to new heights in our lives.

But football is also a weird, inexplicable, at times downright stupid game that may force you to perform Keith Moon-level furniture destruction in your own living room.

So, as much as we at Touchdown Wire endeavor to write about what makes the game great, there are also times when it’s important to point out the dumb plays, boneheaded decisions, and officiating errors that make football all too human.

Folks, it’s time for the Worst of the Week for Week 12 of the 2023 NFL season.

Mac Jones, Bailey Zappe, throw same interception as Patriots’ downward spiral continues

The Patriots’ two quarterbacks — Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe — each threw the same horrible interception in a loss to the Giants.

You know the old saying, “If you have two quarterbacks, you really have no quarterbacks?”

That maxim has never been more true that it currently is for the New England Patriots. Bill Belichick’s team continued its horrific downward spiral on Sunday in a 10-7 loss to the Tommy DeVito-led New York Giants, and Belichick’s two quarterbacks — Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe — did something you don’t generally see.

They threw virtually the same type of interception.

As our friend Taylor Kyles points out, both Jones and Zappe threw cross-body intermediate passes into triple coverage, and in both cases, the result was what you’d expect.

I mean… that’s a carbon copy.

Belichick spent most of the week without telling anybody in the public sector who his starting quarterback would be for this game, and you can understand why.

For the game, Jones completed 12 of 21 passes for 89 yards and two interceptions before he was benched at the half, and Zappe completed nine of 14 passes for 54 yards and an interception in relief.

The 2-9 Patriots now have the second overall draft pick position behind the 1-9 Carolina Panthers, who traded their 2024 first-round pick to the Chicago Bears for the right to move up to No. 1 in the 2023 draft. They selected Alabama quarterback Bryce Young with that pick, of course.

We’re assuming that whoever’s in charge in Foxboro next year will be looking similarly at a college quarterback to reboot the franchise.
