The 2021 SEC football schedule was released. There’s anger, excitement, and a whole lot of looking ahead to what should be a full schedule again this fall as if 2020 never happened.

Here are five things about the schedule that matter including who misses the big teams from the other division, the non-conference analysis, the one big difference in this year’s slate, the winners and losers, and starting out with …

5.  Who gets the rested teams?

There was a time not all that long ago when SEC teams took an Alabamacation.

You have the Crimson Tide on the schedule? Okay … just make sure you get a week off to rest up and get ready first. In the end that time off usually didn’t matter much, but that’s changed now.

Every SEC team has one off week and one light scrimmage against an FCS or some other cream-filled pastry of a paycheck game, but this year, that easy date isn’t always coming before a key SEC date. That matters, too – sometimes it’s nice to get a few easy games to gear up.

Which current SEC college football programs are the greatest of all-time according to the UPI and USA Today Coaches final polls?

Using a ranking system taking all the AP final college football polls and assigning 25 points to the national champion, 24 for the final No. 2 team, 23 for the No. 3 team on down.

There’s no question who the elephant is in the room – it’s Alabama’s spot up top and it’s not even close. However, after 2019 and the national championship, LSU moved past Tennessee to the No. 2 all-time spot, and Georgia is now tied with the Vols.

One note on this – this is made up of current SEC programs and factoring in their histories. Obviously Texas A&M, Missouri, and others are new to the SEC world over the last few years, but all of their records count.

Again, this is based on the CFN formula. This isn’t any official ranking coming from USA TODAY or the Coaches Poll.

Georgia vs Cincinnati: Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl 10 Thoughts On UGA 24-21 Win

Georgia 24 Cincinnati 21: Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl

10. Of course Georgia cared.

The whole “SEC team doesn’t care” narrative when it comes to bowl games outside of the College Football Playoff is misguided. Remember, the SEC is going to make up about 25% of the NFL Draft, like it always does.

Of course there are going to be more key players ready to move on to the next level – or at least thinking about it – and of course that makes a difference in a non-CFP bowl game.

Also, yeah, SEC teams that lose the conference championship game – those teams really do think College Football Playoff or bust – don’t play as well when their hearts get ripped out.

That wasn’t the case in this for Georgia, and while there were opt-outs, there weren’t enough to make a massive difference – at least compared to Florida’s issues vs. Oklahoma. Georgia cared, and Cincinnati was just that good.

9. Don’t read anything more into the performance by Cincinnati than what it was.

Of course this Bearcat team can play with and hang around with the top teams, but that was never the point. As always, it’s about the long haul of a Power Five conference schedule against Power Five conference talent.

Again, though, don’t make too much more out of this than the 2021 Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl being a blast. Once you start trying to take it into something else, it’s all disappointing.

8. Not having Gerrid Doaks mattered.

The Cincinnati running game had one big 79-yard Jerome Ford touchdown run to open up the second half, and that was about it. QB Desmond Ridder couldn’t get free, and there weren’t any big runs outside of the Ford dash, especially in the second half.

Doaks was UC’s best back and leading rusher, and while Ford is more than fine, the team needed another option for the ground attack.

7. Not having James Cook didn’t matter, because …

The Cincinnati run defense was amazing. Georgia second-leading rusher James Cook didn’t play after the loss of his father a few days before, but that wasn’t the issue.

The Georgia offensive front couldn’t generate anything of a push, there were problems keeping JT Daniels from getting hit, and the Bulldogs only ran for 45 yards averaging fewer than two yards per carry. Georgia’s offense was all about …

Three Reasons Why You Should Watch The Chick-fi-A Peach Bowl

It’s the annual referendum matchup in the College Football Playoff era. The committee throws the Group of Five programs a cookie, with the top-ranked champion from the American Athletic Conference, Conference USA, MAC, Mountain West and Sun Belt getting a big-name bowl slot against a Power Five program that wasn’t good enough to make the CFP.

The Group of Five started out 3-1 in the CFP era against the big boys, but the Power Five has taken the last two matchups. This time around means a wee bit more because there wasn’t a totally obvious No. 4 team for the playoff, and Cincinnati finished unbeaten and ranked eighth in the final rankings.

A win by the American Athletic Conference champion won’t necessarily change anything going forward, but in the battle for hearts and minds, it would give the Group of Five programs a major talking point. However …

For good and for bad, Georgia is terrific. Talent-wise, it’s right there with anyone in the country, but the quarterback play was shaky early on, things changed once JT Daniels was healthy enough to go, and the team ripped through a three-game run of wins with the offense improving along the way. That’s all a good thing for Georgia, but if the team plays at its top level, this might not be the prettiest of games.

Cincinnati has been knocking on the door of big things under head coach Luke Fickell. The program won 11 games two seasons in a row – and two bowl games over Power Five teams – and then came this unbeaten campaign with a conference championship. The problem? There weren’t any games against any top teams, and there weren’t any against Power Five programs. That’s about to change in a big way.

Why Georgia Will Win

And there’s the running game.

South Carolina might be on fumes, but it was still an impressive performance by Georgia last week as it ripped through with its ground attack or a season-high 332 yards in the 45-16 win.

QB JT Daniels got the passing game going against Mississippi State the week before – there wasn’t any need to run it, but the eight yards against the Bulldogs were alarming – and then came last week’s dominance.

Missouri’s defense has been a rock for most of the year, but it also hasn’t faced a whole lot of teams that want to run the ball regularly – and efficiently.

The Tigers were hit from all sides in the 50-48 win over Arkansas last week – allowing 566 yards – and now comes the Georgia balance.

Week 15 College Schedule

Why Missouri Will Win

The Georgia secondary has been a problem.

The defense overall has been great – it’s the second-best in the SEC – and it doesn’t allow a whole slew of big plays, but teams are able to dink and dunk way too consistently.

Florida and Alabama each bombed away for over 400 yards, and Arkansas, Tennessee and Mississippi State all pushed past 200 yards.

Missouri QB Connor Bazelak keeps getting better and better, following up his 318-yard day against Vanderbilt with 380 against Arkansas. He’s not throwing a ton of touchdown passes – just five so far with four of those coming against LSU – but he’s also not throwing picks.

What’s Going To Happen

The Missouri defense will get back to form.

Georgia won’t run the ball like it did against South Carolina, Mizzou will control the clock and the tempo, and the offense will convert on every opportunity.

The Bulldogs will win – the defense will rise up when it has to – but the Tigers are 5-1 at home, and that one loss was a decent fight against Alabama to kick things off.

Georgia (6-2) vs Vanderbilt (0-8) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why Vanderbilt Will Win

Can the team use all the changes to rise up and start producing just a little bit?

Interim head coach Todd Fitch takes over for Derek Mason after an 0-8 start, all of the focus will continue to be on Sarah Fuller and whether or not she’ll get a real kicking attempt, and the pressure is totally and completely off.

A 41-0 loss to Missouri will do that.

The offense actually was working a bit before getting stomped last week, with a. passing game that hit the 300-yard mark in three of the previous four games.

Georgia’s secondary gives up plenty of yards – and only picked off five passes in the last seven games – and there are just enough giveaways to matter. However …

Week 14 College Schedule

Why Georgia Will Win

JT Daniels has boosted up the offense and give the Dawgs a potential star to build around.

He stepped in and hit Mississippi State for 401 yards and a whole lot of big plays, and followed it up with a functional 139-yard, two-touchdown day against South Carolina. He wasn’t needed last week, mostly because the offense was busy running for 332 yards and four scores ripping off big run after big run.

The Georgia offensive line will be good, the pass rush will be great, and there’s a strong chance that Vanderbilt isn’t able to pivot after the Missouri debacle.

CFN Experts Picks: College

What’s Going To Happen

Fuller will get a real, live field goal attempt late, but she won’t get an extra point try.

The Bulldogs will put this away with 17 first quarter points, and the defense will take over from there.
