Clemson (9-3) vs Florida State (8-2) Game Preview

Why Clemson Will Win

The defense still works.

Clemson was able to beat Florida State by ten – and overcome a rough shooting day from the outside – back in late December by clamping down on the outside and dominating on the glass.

The Tigers should be able to overcome FSU’s shot-blocking capabilities by shooting over the D – the Seminoles aren’t as great at defending form three as they were in the first game – and they’re quick enough to force a whole lot of mistakes. This isn’t a great rebounding team, but it should be able to hold its own again. However …

Why Florida State Will Win

Clemson’s defense has gone bye-bye over the last few games.

Strong all season, all of a sudden it can’t stop teams from hitting from the outside. First Virginia went all Steph Curry on the Tigers in an 85-50 win, and then Georgia Tech went off a few days ago in an 83-65 win. The Cavaliers and Yellow Jackets combined to hit 31-of-53 tries from three, and Clemson couldn’t keep up.

Hitting from three isn’t really what Florida State does, but it’s been good at it lately with a hot-shooting streak over its three game winning streak.

The rebounding performance form Clemson in the first game was an anomaly – it hasn’t come close to getting 46 rebounds in any other game. This isn’t that strong a team on the defensive glass, and the offense isn’t strong enough to keep up if the Noles can get off to a hot start.

What’s Going To Happen

Are Clemson’s problems over the last two games an indication of things to come, or is the glitch fixed? The Seminoles are shooting too well, Clemson isn’t getting to the line enough – it got there a whopping 33 times in the first matchup – and this will be a vastly different game than the December meeting.

The pre-spring version of the CFN 2021 rankings with a first look at all the ACC teams.

[jwplayer GOXHcfXn]

2021 ACC Rankings: Pre-Spring

ACC Atlantic Division

1. Clemson Tigers

Why To Be Happy: At the moment, the defense gets all 11 starters back after leading the ACC in total and scoring D. This was a young group up front, and now all the stars return. Linebackers James Skalski and Baylon Spector announced they’re returning for another year, corner Derion Kendrick is back, and on and on and on. Oh yeah … the offense did this last year without a few key receivers who’ll be back.

What To Work On: Turnovers were a bit of a problem – especially fumbling – and the running game wasn’t its normal killer self. Travis Etienne is done, but the veteran O line has to be better at pounding away.

Bottom Line: It’s Clemson. It lost a transcendent NFL QB prospect in Trevor Lawrence, the most productive ACC running back ever in Etienne, and it’s going to be even better.

2. NC State Wolfpack

Why To Be Happy: The defense loses the main man Asim McNeill from the middle of the line, but everyone else of note appears to be back. Throw in a few key transfers – especially at safety – and the Pack should be nasty on that side of the ball.

What To Work On: Most of the offensive skill parts are back – helped by the return of leading receiver Emeka Emezie – but the production has to come. The O was fine, but it wasn’t explosive enough and there were too many turnovers.

Bottom Line: NC State was great at beating the teams it was supposed to, and the experience will be there to repeat the decent level of success of 2020, but big-time playmakers have to emerge.

3. Boston College Eagles

Why To Be Happy: It was a strong first season under head coach Jeff Hafley, and he gets the pieces back for the offense to be even more dangerous. The backfield of QB Phil Jurkovec and RB David Bailey will be great if …

What To Work On: The running game has to start working again. It wasn’t a function of the offensive style, but with all five offensive linemen expected to return to pave the way for Bailey, there’s no excuse for being 118th in the nation in rushing again.

Bottom Line: Just about everyone returns on offense, and the defense that needs a little reworking needs to start getting behind the line more. The Eagles will be stronger.

4. Florida State Seminoles

Why To Be Happy: There needs to be a whole lot of work and a whole lot more production, but almost all of the entire starting offensive 11 from the end of last season is expected to be back. The defensive side loses several key parts, but instant help appears to be on the way from the transfer portal.

What To Work On: Yeah, the offense. The defensive side has to generate some semblance of a pass rush, but the O has to be more efficient throwing the ball and has to figure out how to move the chains.

Bottom Line: 2020 couldn’t have been any worse for head coach Mike Norvell and the national title-level program. There’s experience, there’s a reset mindset, and … there’s a lot of work to do.

5. Wake Forest Demon Deacons

Why To Be Happy: The offense should be even more explosive and more dangerous. The offensive line returns almost intact, the receiving corps is loaded, and Sam Hartman – bowl meltdown against Wisconsin aside – is a terrific triggerman to run it all. There’s more than enough talent back on D to be fine, but …

What To Work On: Losing star end Carlos Basham matters. The pass rush was a problem for the Demon Deacons with him, and now it’s going to take a whole lot of work to get even more out of the D that has to work to hold serve.

Bottom Line: It’ll be more of the same. Dangerous, fun, explosive offense that should be able to keep up with just about everyone, but questionable defense that should have enough issues to make every game a shootout.

6. Louisville Cardinals

Why To Be Happy: The offense is going to be interesting with Georgia Southern option wizard QB Shai Werts transferring in to add another option. Expect more consistency and production from a team that should be able to keep up with just about everyone.

What To Work On: The receiving corps loses Dez Fitzpatrick and Tutu Atwell to the next level, and the linebacking corps has to replace almost all the starting linebackers along with nose tackle Jared Goldwire.

Bottom Line: Coming off a 4-7 season, the Cardinals have to bounce back quickly despite a slew of key departures compared to the rest of the Atlantic Division. Improvement on the O line and limiting the turnovers are a must.

7. Syracuse Orange

Why To Be Happy: The Orange have almost everyone back on offense and on the defensive front seven, and the arrival of Garrett Shrader from Mississippi State should help the quarterback room. The experience is there on both sides of the ball, but …

What To Work On: The secondary loses its top playmakers, and losing receiver and return man Nykeim Johnson to Kent State hurts, and … offensive line, offensive line, offensive line. The Orange have GOT to figure out how to block after not doing enough of it over the last few years.

Bottom Line: We know it’s possible for Syracuse to win – we all saw it a few years ago – but after a lost year with horrible play on both lines, the program has to get the infrastructure right.

Florida State (2-6) vs Duke (2-8) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why Duke Will Win

The Blue Devils might be struggling overall, but Florida State hasn’t played in close to a month.

So what’s going right during this rough run with just one ACC win?

They’re taking the ball away enough to matter. Oddly enough, one of their two wins came in the only game when they didn’t force a takeaway – against Syracuse – but they’ve been able to come up with multiple turnovers in five of the last eight games.

Florida State hadn’t had a huge issue with turnovers after a rough start, but before not being able to go, it turned it over five times in the final two games and is a -5 overall in turnover margin.

For a Blue Devil team struggling way too much in all phases, it needs the help.

Week 15 College Schedule

Why Florida State Will Win

The Seminoles are having way too many problems in too many areas, but they should keep it simple. Run, run some more, and wait for Duke to screw up.

FSU isn’t taking the ball away enough to matter, but Duke can’t stop screwing up. The O has turned it over a whopping 35 times on the season, the team is -17 in turnover margin, and the glitch isn’t even close to being fixed with five giveaways last week against Miami.

The Blue Devil run defense hasn’t been anything great, and while the Noles aren’t rumbling on the ground, they have to give it a shot to control the game – and then take advantage of any and every opportunity.

CFN Experts Picks: College

What’s Going To Happen

Florida State’s offense isn’t moving, but the defense is the bigger overall problem. It’s a disaster on third downs and the secondary has been lit up way too easily. Duke’s offense might not be consistent, but it’ll be able to throw.

Just when it seems like the Blue Devils will start to take over, the turnovers will kick in. The team just can’t stop screwing up, the defense is struggling too much, and FSU is – on the positive side after all this – rested.

Virginia (4-4) vs Florida State (2-6) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why Virginia Will Win

This whole 2020 Florida State season is going just GREAT.

The Mike Norvell era got off to a rocky start before it all began, there’s been nothing positive on the field other than a bizarre upset over North Carolina, and now it’s all taken another after the program made Dabo mad – FSU pulled out of the game last week with Clemson with COVID protocol concerns.

Meanwhile, Virginia is quiet on a three-game winning streak to turn its season around, tuning up even more with a 55-15 win over Abilene Christian last week.

The Cavalier offensive line is playing great, the pass rush is terrific, and the team does a great job of controlling the pace and tempo.

Why Florida State Will Win

Florida State might not be doing a whole lot of things right, but it’s able to control the time of possession, too.

In a game like this with little passing game and less of a defense to rely on, the Noles will be more than happy to try running the ball, letting the clock roll, and keep the score low and make the game go fast.

This isn’t an explosive Virginia team. It comes in with the ACC’s worst pass defense, no downfield passing game to worry about, and with enough of a turnover problem to give FSU several easy chances.

CFN Experts Picks: College

What’s Going To Happen

FSU will keep on trying with the various young parts getting their shot, but this rough year isn’t going to get any better.

It’s not going to be anything pretty, but Virginia will come up with a workmanlike effort on both sides of the ball. It won’t make the mistakes Florida State will, and the run D will hold up a wee bit better.

Clemson (7-1) vs Florida State (2-5) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why Clemson Will Win

We’re all having a bad 2020. Florida State – at least in the sports universe – is having a really bad 2020. It’s a program just trying to get through this and hope for 2021 spring football to start everything over again.

The team has hardly quit, but it lost a slew of the key parts coming into the season, there’s only one win over an FBS team, and now it gets a Clemson team looking to get on a roll on the way to the ACC Championship appearance.

The Seminoles are seemingly getting hit with every possible flag, there’s no downfield passing game, and there’s no pass rush whatsoever to bother Trevor Lawrence, who’s back after missing the last few weeks after testing positive for the coronavirus.

Why Florida State Will Win

Okay, Jordan Travis, let’s give this another shot.

Chubba Purdy gave it a go, got hurt, and now he’s done for the season, and James Blackman opted out. Travis might not be doing much for the passing game, but he’s a baller of a runner who took off for 107 yards and two scores in the shocking win over North Carolina.

There’s a nothing-to-lose factor at this point with the Noles, the parts that are still around are relatively young and looking to make their mark going forward, there’s a lot of movement around to try out a few things, and having safety Hamsah Nasirildeen in his second game back after missing most of the season.

The starting 22 should be able to hang around for a bit, especially against a banged up Clemson team that’s not running the ball all that well, but …

CFN Experts Picks, Predictions: Week 12

What’s Going To Happen

Clemson is about to go off.

There was a time not all that long ago when the world stopped for this game between two college football powerhouses and national title contenders. This year, it’s just another game on the ACC slate, but it’s important for Clemson to get its groove back after sitting on the Notre Dame loss for a few weeks and playing poorly against Boston College the week before.

Style points don’t matter for the Tigers – win out, get into the CFP – but it’s November. This is where this program starts to kick it all in, and with Lawrence back – not that DJ Uiagalelei was bad – here we go.
