Cowboys News: Elliott a primary focus, Prescott’s agent leaves CAA, defensive rookie impact

Will there be a shift in Prescott’s representation in the next round of negotiations? Where does Elliott fit in McCarthy’s O?

New Dallas head coach Mike McCarthy has a three-headed monster at wide receiver but reiterated on Friday his stance from when he first got hired what Ezekiel Elliott’s role would be. Dak Prescott’s agent Todd France has parted ways with CAA and it could affect future contract negotiations if the Cowboys signal-caller stays with the agency.

The Cowboys filled several holes defensively through the NFL Draft, but just how much will they be able to contribute in Year 1? Antwaun Woods signed his ERFA tender, but with several additions at defensive tackle through free agency and the draft, will he be the odd man out? How an aggressive offense will help the Cowboys defense, whether or not the 2020 season is Sean Lee’s last, and how Isaac Alarcon Garcia used the NFL’s International Player Pathway program in Florida to make it to the pros are covered in the news and notes.

Elliott defiantly rejects idea Cowboys WR trio will steal his touches

The Dallas RB took to Twitter to quash any perceived drama over whether he’ll still see a heavy workload under coach Mike McCarthy in 2020.

Amari Cooper this week set the bar awfully high for himself and his pass-catching cohorts in Dallas. If he, Michael Gallup, and rookie CeeDee Lamb follow through on what Cooper called “the expectations” for all three to notch 1,000-yard receiving seasons, it would mark just the sixth time in league history a trio of teammates has accomplished the feat.

Cooper may have raised a few eyebrows by saying it out loud. But running back Ezekiel Elliott was quick to smack down the attempts by one reporter to raise questions about what that might mean for the team’s rushing attack.

ESPN’s Ed Werder, a longtime Cowboys insider, wondered via Twitter what a pass-heavy gameplan- the kind that might produce three 1,000-yard receivers- would leave in terms of touches for Elliott, who’s averaged 20-plus carries per game in each of his last three seasons.

The two-time rushing champ, though, does not seem to be concerned about his workload taking a nosedive simply because there’s a wealth of WR weaponry in the Dallas huddle.

A few things to consider. First, with Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers on the roster, it’s no wonder the Packers were a pass-first team, especially when the best backfield options were the likes of Ahman Green, Ryan Grant, and Eddie Lacy. Fine rushers, all, but none of them realistically approach Elliott’s caliber. McCarthy “putting his full faith in the QB” during his Green Bay tenure is, then, completely understandable. It’s sound strategy. But it doesn’t automatically follow that he’ll blindly force the same philosophy in Dallas.

But even if McCarthy does go with an all-out air raid, that’s not to say Elliott won’t still rack up his numbers. Of the five previous squads to feature a trio of 1,000-yard receivers, two also had a rusher hit the milestone, as The Athletic‘s Jon Machota pointed out.

Legendary offenses find a way to spread the ball around, and Dallas’s offense has all the ingredients to be just that.

Finally, it’s not like the Cowboys didn’t come really close to pulling off this exact feat just last season. In 2019, both Cooper and Gallup topped 1,000 yards. In fact, each finished with over 1,100. Randall Cobb totaled 828, falling just 172 yards short of the magic benchmark. That’s over 3,000 yards distributed among three guys. And yet, Elliott still ended up with 1,357 on the ground.

While Cooper, Gallup, and Lamb could mathematically all be 1,000-yard men and still leave more than enough meat on the bone for Elliott, the triple-1K crown isn’t something that fans should necessarily want to see.

Cowboys staff writers debated the notion on the team website. All admit that it’s certainly possible, given the talents of the players in question. But while it would likely be fun to watch, it may not be desirable. In fact, if it does happen, it could mean that the season is not going as hoped.

Writes David Helman:

“Dak Prescott’s favorite guy is the open guy. He’s going to throw a lot of balls to running backs, and the (hopeful) emergence of Blake Jarwin is another thing to consider.”

From Rob Phillips:

“[I]f the Cowboys have more success as a team, play with more leads, Elliott and Tony Pollard will have more chances to grind out yards. The offense played from behind a lot last season. That’s a big reason why quarterback Dak Prescott had at least 40 pass attempts in seven of the 16 games.”

And according to Nick Eatman:

“Honestly, if things go right, they probably won’t even have two [1,000-yard receivers]. Again, that’s a good thing. If this team is going to be a 10-11-12 win team, they need to be running the ball and running out the clock in the fourth quarter, not passing the ball around. Is it possible? Yes, but it’s not a good thing.”

But for now, the lawfirm of Cooper, Gallup, and Lamb should absolutely have their sights set on 1,000 apiece. In fact, so should Jarwin. And Elliott should go ahead and get his “Feed Me” bowl all cleaned up and ready for another big helping of touches. And, heck, why not let 2020 be the year that Pollard breaks out, too?

There are boatloads of yards to go around for this season’s Cowboys offense. Let the opposing defenses be the ones to try to guess which playmakers are going to be the ones to get them on any given week.

Cowboys News: Gallup leap in Year 3? CB has Covid, Kicker comp is off

Michael Gallup doubled his production in 2019 from his rookie campaign, but improving his drop issues and playing alongside CeeDee Lamb could see his numbers increase even more. Even after resigning with the team in March, kicker Kai Forbath was released on Saturday.

Wide receiver Michael Gallup doubled his production from his rookie campaign in 2019. However, improving on his drop issues coupled with the addition of CeeDee Lamb could see his game reach an even higher plateau this season. Kicker Kai Forbath re-signed with the Cowboys on a one-year deal in March, but with a longer investment tied into the new special teams coach’s guy made a decision before the competition.

Safety Donovan Wilson shined during last year’s preseason but will have a much tougher route in 2020 with exhibition games being eliminated as he looks to compete for a starting role. The current pandemic has again landed at the Cowboys doorstep as cornerback Saivion Smith has been placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list. Prescott No. 1 in 2016 redraft, Cowboys’ Elliott drops out of Top 10

Find out where Dak Prescott and Ezekiel Elliott land in this 2016 redraft.

The 2016 NFL draft will always be memorable for Dallas Cowboy fans. It was the first time the Cowboys picked in the top five since 2003, and Dallas was able to acquire two franchise cornerstones in running back Ezekiel Elliott and quarterback Dak Prescott, as well as a Pro Bowl caliber linebacker in Jaylon Smith.

In one of the best drafts in recent history, the Cowboys certainly fared well. So much so, that their talent has been distributed elsewhere in a new redraft. If it was all done over again with hindsight, the new landing spots for the Dallas stars would be elsewhere. Bleacher Report ‘s Brad Gagnon authored the exercise that moved Prescott up to first overall.

It’s mind blowing that Prescott fell all the way to No. 135 in the original draft, but in the redraft the mistake was not repeated. Arguments can be made for division rival Carson Wentz to be taken first overall, but ultimately Prescott has been just as good as Wentz and much more durable.

Prescott hasn’t missed a game in his four-year career, and is coming off his best season through the air yet, with over 4,900 passing yards.

Elliott was originally selected fourth however the redraft wasn’t as kind as it was to Prescott. The former Buckeye All-American slid to the Falcons at selection no. 17.

That spot feels entirely too low for a player of Elliott’s caliber, when considering some of the skill position players taken ahead of Elliott in the redraft. Wide receiver Tyler Boyd was four spots ahead at no. 13.

The do-it-all running back has lead the league in rushing in two of his three full seasons, and is as solid out of the backfield and in pass protection as nearly every back in the game. Gagnon is likely speaking to the value of the running back position in today’s game, but Elliott’s elite skill set and talent aren’t up for debate.

So if Prescott is off the board, and Elliott wouldn’t go until later, who did the Cowboys end up with in the fourth slot of the redraft?

They were able to pick up the original first pick, quarterback Jared Goff. Goff had his ups and downs but has led a team to a Super Bowl appearance.

Later in the draft, Smith ended up being selected by the Kansas City Chiefs at No. 28. The marriage makes sense, considering Andy Reid’s team has snatched up former Cowboys linebackers Anthony Hitchens and Damien Wilson in back-to-back free agent classes.

Dallas Cowboys running back continues to excel during the 2020 offseason. At the beginning of the pandemic, he and teammate DeMarcus Lawrence made strong donations to the North Texas food bank; with Elliott donating 100% of attire-sale proceeds to the cause.

Elliott was also the first player fellow Ohio State alum Michael Thomas reached out to for the filming of the iconic video that forced the NFL to adopt a more public policy of looking to battle racial injustice. Earlier in the month, Elliott donated just under $100,000 to local families in need, and now he has turned his attention to a local high school.

Elliott released a short video of his trip to South Oak Cliff High School in Dallas, where he spoke to kids, took pictures and signed jerseys. He then went out to a vehicle trunk and emerged with a stock of shoes that he gave away to an appreciative audience.

Cowboys News: Rookie class signed, Jamal Adams saga ends

The entire 2020 draft class for Dallas are under contract. After nearly a year, the Jamal Adams to Dallas saga ends. News and Notes.

There’s been plenty of excitement and anticipation for the Dallas Cowboys 2020 draft class, and now they’re all signed to their rookie contracts. For almost a year, the speculation of All-Pro safety Jamal Adams coming to Dallas has been a very hot topic. Now, that scenario can finally be put to bed as the New York Jets have now traded him to the Seattle Seahawks.

Amari Cooper set several career highs in 2019, however, advanced stats say he could be the most improved player on the Cowboys based on production. One of the interesting questions about the Cowboys offense this season will be how will Mike McCarthy’s history of utilizing the fullback position coincide with Kellen Moore who rarely did in 2019. Potential harmful salary cap implications, three players who could rise up the depth chart, and how 2020 is an important year for the safety position and more are covered in the news and notes.

News: Dak Prescott deadline quickly approaches, Cowboys world not standing still

All things news and notes for the Dallas Cowboys on July 14, 2020.

It’s Wednesday morning and the Dak Prescott contract deadline, at least for this year, is just hours away. With varying reports of communication, or lack thereof between the two sides, it’s still a mystery how things will play out.

In other news, Prescott’s wide receiving options are the best in the business, a mock draft has the team in the market for yet another weapon and running back Ezekiel Elliott is giving back. There’s also a look at a new Cowboy getting in some off-field work as well as some young guns trying on their new gear.

The Cowboys seven-time Pro Bowler Tyron Smith was ranked the NFL’s top offensive tackle by ESPN. Based on average annual salaries and recent production Ezekiel Elliott was named the Cowboys most overpaid player.

Even as he continued to battle nagging injuries in 2019, Dallas Cowboys star left tackle Tyron Smith made his seventh consecutive Pro Bowl. He was recently ranked the top offensive tackle in the NFL by ESPN, but there’s a few names missing from the list. Ezekiel Elliott signed a six-year, $90 million dollar extension before the beginning of last season and finished in the top-five in several statistical categories. However, based on average annual salary and recent production he was surprisingly named the Cowboys’ most overpaid player.

Post game jersey exchanges come to a stop due to Covid-19 as NFL passes a few new protocols about post game activity between players.

As the days go by and it gets closer and closer to NFL training camp, more protocols and league changes make their way to the players.  There will be no interaction between players after the clock reads zero and no jerseys will be exchanged in 2020. Naturally this set off plenty of NFL players in finding that this ruling is just plain silly after 60 minutes of aggressive contact.

Cowboys’ Ezekiel Elliott, over COVID, donates $85K to families in need

The superstar running back made a personal (masked) appearance to deliver the proceeds from a merchandise sale to a Dallas area food bank.

Ezekiel Elliott has turned “Feed Me” into his trademark gimmick, with TV cameras glued to him on gameday, waiting for the pantomime he does after a big run to the delight of Cowboys fans everywhere. But this week, the superstar put his money where others’ mouths are to feed those less fortunate.

The two-time rushing champ has donated $85,000 to the North Texas Food Bank to help 400,000 families in need.

This past spring, Elliott announced a partnership with Dallas-based CentreTX to sell exclusive merchandise, with all proceeds going to the food bank to assist in Covid-19 relief efforts. Tuesday’s donation was the result of that promotion.

Elliott made the donation in person and masked, after his own recovery from a positive coronavirus diagnosis last month. On June 24, Elliott reported that he felt “good” and “normal,” but stated that he planned to “wait another week and just give myself more time to rest up.”

CentreTX joined in with an Instagram post of their own, thanking Elliott.

“We’re proud to be able to give back to the city that’s given us so much,” the post read in part. “A huge thank you to everyone who supported this project with @ezekielelliott and helped us feed many people in the North Texas community — we couldn’t have done it without you. Thank you @northtexasfoodbank for all the good you do and the help you provide our community in a time of such uncertainty.”
