Why Central Michigan Will Win

The Chippewas might have given up a ton of points to Western Michigan in the 52-44 loss, and the secondary has had a whole slew of issues, but the run defense has been solid so far and the offense has been almost perfectly balanced.

CMU has run for 640 yards, thrown for 626, and it’s not turning the ball over with just one giveaway in the first three games.

Eastern Michigan has failed to run for more than 61 yards in two of the three games, it’s having problems on third downs, and the downfield passing game is struggling, but …

CFN Experts Picks: NFL

Why Eastern Michigan Will Win

The Eagles are doing a good job of making the passing game go. It’s not explosive, and it’s more functional than phenomenal, but it’s good enough to go for 250 yards.

The Eagles aren’t bad at taking the ball away, the defense is good on third downs, and the team is playing just a wee bit better than its 0-3 record.

Central Michigan is doing a lot of things right, it’ll give up big plays through the air, the third down defense is just okay, and the secondary is giving up 262 yards per game.

EMU QB Preston Hutchinson has to avoid throwing picks, but he’s got the air to keep pushing the attack.

CFN Experts Picks: College

What’s Going To Happen

Eastern Michigan hasn’t been able to bust through with any luck or a win but the team is in place to pull this off as long as the offensive line can hold up.

It won’t.

The Eagles will keep this close and keep it a fight for a full four quarters, but the Central Michigan pass rush will take over late to come up with the key stops to hold on.

Toledo (1-1) vs Eastern Michigan (0-2) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why Toledo Will Win

The Rocket offense has been terrific so far, but in different ways.

The running game was always expected to be strong – and it opened with 310 yards against Bowling Green – but the versatile attack hit Western Michigan for close to 340 yards in the tough 41-38 loss last week.

The Eastern Michigan secondary hasn’t been all that bad, but the pass defense hasn’t been a rock, and the defense has allowed over 200 yards rushing and 200 receiving in both to the first two games.

Yes, this is an Eastern Michigan program that seems to keep everything close, but it keeps games close, and loses. But …

Why Eastern Michigan Will Win

The Eagles are finally back at home.

They’ve been tough in two games against two dangerous MAC teams with two dangerous offenses – Kent State and Ball State – and they had their chances to win both games.

The defense has been great on third downs, but that’s been about it. The offense isn’t moving the ball enough, and the defense is getting run over, but QB Preston Hutchinson is a dangerous option as a runner as well as a downfield passer, and on the other side, Turan Rush is a good-looking pass rusher who should be disruptive.

CFN Experts Picks, Predictions: Week 12

What’s Going To Happen

It’s going to be close, but all Eastern Michigan games are close. 12 of the program’s last 17 games have been decided by eight points or fewer, and at home, this is going to be a good battle.

Toledo is getting too much out of its great group of running backs, Eli Peters is a solid quarterback, and the team will come through in the clutch. The Rockets will make the big plays in key spots, and the Eagles won’t.

Eastern Michigan (0-1) vs Ball State (0-1) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on the NFL, go to BetMGM

Why Eastern Michigan Will Win

It’s Eastern Michigan, so it’s always able to stay in games and it’s always finding ways to keep things close. That happened last week, getting outplayed in a variety of ways against Kent State, but it was close in a 27-23 loss.

Miami University has an improved offense, but it’s not strong enough to be hitting 38 points and 288 passing yards on a regular basis. That’s what it did against Ball State in a 38-31 win, and now it’s up to Preston Hutchinson to keep pressing the passing game deal – the receiving corps is good enough to shine against this secondary, especially on third downs.

Why Ball State Will Win

The offense worked against Miami University.

Caleb Huntley is among the MAC’s best running backs – he tore off 130 yards and two scores – and Drew Plitt is a veteran passer who should be able to hit the rebuilding EMU secondary for close to nine yards per pass.

The Cardinals are better equipped for some sort of a shootout. They steadily scored last week and should keep the pressure on all game long.

CFN College Football Experts Picks

What’s Going To Happen

Ball State might get ignored a bit after the loss to MU, but it’s still among the MAC’s best teams. The offensive balance will be too much for the Eagles to overcome. Kent State was able to mix up the offense to win, and Ball State will do the same.

But it’s Eastern Michigan. It’ll be be close, because all Eastern Michigan games are close.

Eastern Michigan (0-0) vs Kent State (0-0) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college football, go to BetMGM

Why Eastern Michigan Will Win

There might be a whole lot of work needed in the EMU skill spots after replacing the top guys, but the offensive line is loaded with experience and should be terrific in pass protection right out of the gate.

The defensive side has the tackles and the bulk to hold up, and there should be a bit more of a pass rush against a Kent State offensive front that had big problems keeping teams out of the backfield. It’s a veteran Golden Flash O line, but it has to be far, far better at preventing tackles for loss.

Why Kent State Will Win

The offense got red hot at the end of last season, and now it gets back QB Dustin Crum and just enough offense weapons to work around the experience line.

This might not be a big defense, but it’s athletic, gets around the ball, and the quickness is there to bother the new guys in the Eastern Michigan backfield. The Eagle passing game isn’t expected to be lights out right away, and the Kent State secondary should be able to hold up.

What’s Going To Happen

The Kent State attack was great at the end of last year, and it’s got the style to give EMU problems right away. The Golden Flashes won 34-26 last year, and it’s going to be another good fight.

Eastern Michigan has the athleticism on the defensive side to hold up, but the revamped Kent State defense will do just enough to hold down Preston Hutchinson and the EMU passing attack.

It’s Eastern Michigan, though. You know how this works (it seems like it keeps every game close).

Big Ten Cancels Fall Season. What’s Next For College Football?

The Big Ten has canceled its 2020 football season due to concerns over the coronavirus. What’s next for college football?

The Big Ten has canceled its 2020 football season due to concerns over the coronavirus. What’s next for college football?

The Big Ten is going to do it. It’s going to cancel its 2020 college football season.

[jwplayer CKtYFVZx]

It was rumored to happen for the last few weeks, and now it’s actually happening the Big Ten is cancelling college football for the 2020 fall.

The details of what’s next are still sketchy, but commissioner Kevin Warren has been hinting at the idea of a spring football season. Forgetting that it would mean two college football seasons in ten months, and that college football in Minneapolis and Madison would be delightful in February, there aren’t any details yet on how that might work.

This all started rolling over the weekend with reports of a meeting among conference presidents about the viability of a college football season, and then Monday morning the Dan Patrick Show went with the story that the Big Ten was going to shut things down.

In the end, it was just too much. The Big Ten types have been hinting from the start that they didn’t believe they could safely make it all work. There were liability concerns, player safety issues, the lack of revenue from no fans in the stands, and then when it finally came time to practice and get it all going, the college presidents couldn’t make it work.

Oh yeah, and don’t forget the player movement side of things. Squashing the demands and the voices of players isn’t a bad thing for those who run the higher-levels of college athletics.

The Big Ten just gave the whole #WeWantToPlay movement one giant, “bless your heart.”

And now, very predictably, college football gets politicized. What could possibly go wrong?

What’s next for college football coming in a moment …

[protected-iframe id=”361699434b6d70baf15f631ed2408ac1-97672683-92922408″ info=”https://www.googletagservices.com/tag/js/gpt.js” ]

MAC Cancels Football Season. What Does It Mean For The Rest Of College Football?

The MAC has canceled its 2020 football season due to concerns over the coronavirus. What’s next for college football?

The MAC has canceled its 2020 football season due to concerns over the coronavirus. What’s next for college football?

The MAC becomes the first conference to cancel the college football season, at least for the fall.

[jwplayer muPr0F4N]

The MAC announced on Saturday that it’s cancelling/postponing all fall sports due to the COVD-19 concerns. There’s a thought the league will try to play in the spring, but that’s not a huge part of the discussion at the moment.

The MAC had several issues go against them. The main issue was the concern over keeping the players safe, and part of that came with the cost and the resources to adequately test as needed. The other big problem was the Big Ten’s decision to go to a conference-only schedule.

11 MAC games vs. the Big Ten were affected by the scheduling change. In all, the MAC was expected to lose the paychecks from as many as 21 non-conference games. Every conference is different, but the lost revenue side of those games was devastating.

It might be a bit of a cynical overstatement to say that the MAC would still have fall football if the non-conference games weren’t cancelled, but that certainly – at the very least – tipped the scales. Combine the lost revenue with the massive health concerns, and there was a “what are we doing here?” aspect to the MAC”s decision.

There’s the idea that the MAC will play in the spring. In a perfect world, the rest of college football is able to play and figure out how to do this, and the MAC has the spotlight to itself and gets back some of the lost revenue – and does it all safely – through March and April.

And now all eyes turn to the Power Five conferences. Remember, every conference is different, every conference has a different power structure, and every conference has a different revenue stream for football to work off of. However …

Watch out for the Big Ten. Its season has been hanging by a thread for the last several weeks, and while there seemed to be hope after a schedule was announced, the training camps have changed the dynamic. Many teams aren’t practicing full out over concerns for player safety.

Basically, college football doesn’t have a plan. It didn’t create a real plan over the last four months, it didn’t get creative in figuring out whether or not players could play safely, and the sport kicked the can down the road as far as it can go. Now the season is here, and now the sport is realizing how hard it is to ethically and practically play college football. With that said …

No, the college football season isn’t done yet. Even if the Big Ten decides to follow the MAC’s lead, no matter what the optics, the SEC, ACC and Big 12 will still likely do everything humanly possible to play. However, it’ll be a bad, bad look if other conferences try to push things to the spring and everyone else doesn’t follow suit.

So let’s say the other conferences do play. Get ready for the transfer portal to be loaded with top MAC players. Buffalo RBs Jaret Patterson and Kevin Marks, UB DE Malcolm Koonce and LB James Patterson, Toledo RB Bryant Koback, Western Michigan defensive front seven stars Treshaun Hayward and Ali Fayad, and Miami University OT Tommy Doyle are Power Five starters if they choose to leave.

Through all of this, just remember, this will go by in a hurry. There will be college football again, even if it’s not everywhere for right now.
