Arizona State vs Eastern Michigan Game Preview

Why Eastern Michigan Will Win

The Eagles pushed Louisiana and made it a fight for a while, and then they hit a wall and got lapped in the 49-21 loss.

There might be a few issues – more on that in a moment – but QB Taylor Powell is putting up big yards, the offense is moving the chains, and Arizona State’s secondary has to prove itself after struggling a bit against Oklahoma State.

The Arizona State offense is among the worst in college football on third downs, the passing attack hasn’t done much yet, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why Arizona State Will Win

Here come the takeaways. It’s not because the Arizona State defense is great at cranking up the production to force mistakes, but because Taylor Powell has thrown seven interceptions in two games.

The Sun Devils will get the running game going again. It struggled against an Oklahoma State defense that’s once again among the best in the Big 12, and now it’s about to roll.

Eastern Kentucky and Louisiana had success on the ground, but they were too busy throwing on the Eagle defense. Arizona State isn’t going to mess around, it’ll get its strong backfield moving, and it should control the game from the start.

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

Eastern Michigan has enough offense to be plucky, and Arizona State can’t just show up and think it’ll come up with a layup of a win, but this won’t get into the fourth quarter.

Arizona State will need a little while to get going, but it’ll end up with over 250 yards on the ground with a few big plays, and the takeaways will come in the second half.

Eastern Michigan vs Louisiana Game Preview

Why Eastern Michigan Will Win

SE Louisiana is a good FCS team, but that wasn’t the same Louisiana offense of past years in the 24-7 win.

The running game couldn’t bust out anything big, it was a grind over the last three quarters after a solid first half, and a punt return ended up being the big difference.

Eastern Michigan struggled a bit against Eastern Kentucky in the 42-4 win, but it got the scoring going, Taylor Powell and the passing game should be able to keep the chains moving, and …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 2

Why Louisiana Will Win

The Eastern Michigan defense had a rough day.

Eastern Kentucky averaged five yards per carry and and the passing attack hit the EMU secondary hard. Louisiana might not have been great in the opener, but the defense was fine, and the offense has the ability to turn it around fast.

It’s not like the Ragin’ Cajuns did anything crazy to open it up.

The rotation of running backs should grind it out a bit, and the quarterbacks will spread it around well. It might not always be pretty, but …

Week 2 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

The second game of the Michael Desormeaux era at Louisiana will work fine.

Eastern Michigan is feisty and should bring the offensive balance to keep this interesting, but UL offensive balance will be enough to control the tempo and keep things moving.

It’s Eastern Michigan, though. It’ll make it a fight.

Eastern Michigan vs Eastern Kentucky Game Preview

Why Eastern Kentucky Will Win

The Colonels will once again be steady.

The defense is going to be just okay, and the offense will keep things moving, but it starts with the lines that will hold up well.

QB Parker MicKinney is back, the running backs form a good rotation, and it all works around – again – a decent line that should be able to produce against a decent-not-amazing Eastern Michigan defensive front.

Week 1 Expert Picks, Thursday & Friday

Why Eastern Michigan Will Win

The Colonels have a good offensive line. Eastern Michigan’s is better.

There won’t be anything funky happening here. The Eagle running game has the ability to take over right away, the good receivers will keep the chains moving, and the idea will be to keep the mistakes at a minimum and keep on grinding.

Eastern Kentucky will be steadier than spectacular. As long as EMU can win on third downs and keep the turnovers to fewer than two, there won’t be any problems.

Week 1 Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Thursday & Friday

What’s Going To Happen

This is a strong enough Colonel team to keep this from getting out of hand, but the Eastern Michigan offense will take over as the game goes on.

The Eagle defense is questionable, and it’ll get pushed on a few EKU scoring drives to keep up early, but it’ll be a workmanlike win for the MAC.

Eastern Michigan Eagles Preview 2022

Eastern Michigan needs to be graded on a curve.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, head coach Chris Creighton and the program won’t hear about anything other than winning seasons, MAC Championships, and bowl games being the norm, but it wasn’t all that long ago when the bar was set at not getting totally annihilated.

No, Eastern Michigan hasn’t won a bowl game under Creighton – the program is 1-5 all-time – but he has accounted for four of the six appearances.

Really, how bad was Eastern Michigan? From 1996 to 2015 the program only won more than four games once.

Now, after eight years under Creighton, this might be his best team yet with a ton of talent returning on offense, a whole lot happening up front on defense, and with a bowl game now a formality if everything goes right. That starts with …

Eastern Michigan Eagles Preview 2022: Offense

The offense needs some work. Overall it wasn’t bad – it averaged 30 points and 381 yards per game – but there wasn’t any running game to speak of and the passing attack wasn’t consistent enough. Fortunately, the attack is loaded with experience and potential upgrades. The big question though is …

Quarterback – one has to emerge and take the gig. Ben Bryant went back to Cincinnati, Preston Hutchinson left for Chattanooga, and Austin Smith is the lone holdover with every shot to make the job his. However, Cam’Ron McCoy is an interesting prospect from Cincinnati, and former Missouri Tiger and Troy Trojan Taylor Powell is like the best option.

The receiving corps has the parts no matter who the main man at QB is. 5-8 Hassan Beydoun led the team with 97 catches for 1,015 yards and four scores, and Dylan Grumman helped with 64 grabs. Outside of tight end, just about everyone of note is back.

The top four offensive linemen are expected to be back around First Team All-MAC guard Sidy Sow and Second Team All-MAC performers Brian Dooley at one tackle spot. Now they need to do more for a ground game that averaged 119 yards per game and 3.4 yards per carry.

The rushing attack might not have been amazing when now-departed Jawon Hamilton wasn’t rumbling, but former Iowa transfer Samson Evans barreled for 13 touchdowns and Darius Boone Jr. was second on the team with 451 yards and six scores.

Eastern Michigan Eagles Preview 2022: Defense

The defense didn’t do enough on third downs, there weren’t any tackles for loss, and overall it allowed 436 yards and 30 points per game. There’s hope, though, with an experience defensive front and help from the transfer portal for the linebacking corps.

Tariq Spikes led the team with 90 stops in the middle of the linebacking corps, but he needs help around him in the 4-2-5 with Terry Myrick gone. Boston College transfer Joe Sparacio should be a factor.

The line has a good veterans in Alex Merritt, but hybrid end Jose Ramirez is the most important playmaker of the bunch with a team high 12 tackles for loss and 6.5 tackles for loss for a team that didn’t have a whole lot of big plays behind the line.

The secondary will get the most attention through fall camp. There aren’t a slew of big-time playmakers returning, but Kempton Shine is a good-tackling corner and safety Blake Bogan made 45 stops.

2022 Preseason CFN MAC Offensive Player of the Year

RB Lew Nichols, Soph. Central Michigan

Coming off a strong 2020 averaging close to seven yards per carry with over 500 rushing yards, he was all but unstoppable in 2021.

The 5-10, 220-pounder led the nation with 1,848 rushing yards and over 142 per game with 16 rushing scores and two receiving touchdowns. Steady, he came up with over 130 yards in each of the last eight games, and once again he’s going to be the featured star of the attack.

2022 Preseason CFN MAC Defensive Player of the Year

LB Jamal Hines, Sr. Toledo

The three-time All-MAC defender – First Team last season – is a true hybrid who can do a little of everything right. He’s an outside linebacker, but he’s really an edge rushing defensive end who’ll live behind the line for stretches.

The 6-3, 250-pounder made 88 tackles with ten sacks, 15 tackles for loss, and broke up eight passes. With all his experience and all his skill, he’s about to be an all-star gamewrecker again.

It’s the MAC. It’s the conference where worst-to-first is the norm, with 2020 winless Northern Illinois winning the MAC championship in 2021, everyone can beat anyone else, and Toledo will end up somewhere in the middle of it all.

It’s about as settled as the league has been in a long time with the strength still in the West, Buffalo about to be better in the East, and with Akron and Bowling Green still questionable.

Again, though, it’s the MAC. The Zips or Falcons could end up in Detroit in January playing for the title.

The rankings are based on how good the teams should be and not the final projected records. Keeping in mind that this all could/might/will change when we make the final calls in August …

Liberty vs Eastern Michigan LendingTree Bowl Preview

Both teams will be looking to get past rough finishes to end with something positive.

It was a massively disappointing season for a Liberty program that ripped through several ACC teams in 2020 before closing out with a victory over an unbeaten Coastal Carolina.

The 2021 version came into the year full of experience led by dynamic quarterback Malik Willis and a great running game, and it all fell flat as the season wore on.

It was a good team, but there were too many turnovers, too much inconsistency, and way too many penalties. The Flames lost their last three games by a combined score of 100-44, but the losses came against Ole Miss, Louisiana, and Army – three of the better teams on the slate.

Eastern Michigan couldn’t run, couldn’t stop the run, and like Liberty, was wildly inconsistent including losses in two of the last three games. However, unlike the Flames, there aren’t any flags – it was No. 1 in the nation in fewest penalties – and the team didn’t beat itself.

The offense had its moments and the passing game is okay, but there’s a big problem when the ground attack doesn’t work.

Eastern Michigan vs Central Michigan Game Preview

Why Eastern Michigan Will Win

Is that really the Eastern Michigan running game?

The passing attack has been great throughout the season with the ground game along for the ride. In the stunning 22-21 win over Western Michigan two weeks ago, former UCF RB Jawon Hamilton ran for 187 yards as the team came up with a season-high 255 yards.

Central Michigan’s run D has been fine, but it gives up plenty of yards through the air. Eastern Michigan’s offense should be balanced, but …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Central Michigan Will Win

The Central Michigan O has been dominant.

The 39-38 loss to Northern Illinois was the killer for MAC West title hopes, but the Chippewas have won five of their other six games since early October with 200 yards both on the ground and through the air over the last two weeks.

Eastern Michigan doesn’t generate enough consistent pressure, the defense isn’t good on third downs, and …

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

What’s Going To Happen

Central Michigan will close out with a bang, making a statement that it might just be the second-best team in the MAC if Northern Illinois goes on to win the MAC Championship.

Both teams are bowl eligible with solid seven-win seasons – NIU is currently the only other MAC team with seven or more wins – so the pressure is off. This is just for a little bit if in-state MAC pride.

Central Michigan’s offense will be more effective, but the Eastern Michigan passing attack will make this a whole lot of fun.
